Prior to that, the Flyers and Devils played seven times per season from the point the franchise relocated to northern New Jersey in 1982 through the NHL’s realignment following the 1992-93 season.

2019-20 SEASON SERIES

The Flyers and Devils met in three of the four scheduled contests last season. They lost one game due to the COVID-19 stoppage.

Wednesday, October 9, 2019 – Flyers 4, New Jersey 0 at Wells Fargo Center: Carter Hart made 25 saves to earn his first career shutout and anchor a 4-0 win over the Devils. The game was scoreless until Ivan Provorov fired home a power play goal eight seconds shy of the halfway point of the contest, which gave the Flyers a 1-0 lead at the second intermission. They scored twice in the first minute of the third period – first on a goal by Kevin Hayes 33 seconds in and then on a tally from Sean Couturier at the 57-second mark. Travis Konecny closed out the scoring with 8:14 to play in the third. Hart earned his second win of the season, while stopped 30 of 34 shots. Stars of the Game: 1 – Carter Hart; 2 – Ivan Provorov; 3 – Sean Couturier.

Friday, November 2, 2019 – Flyers 4, New Jersey 3 (SO) at Prudential Center: Sean Couturier scored in the third round of the shootout and Carter Hart stopped all three Devils shooters to give the Flyers the extra point in Newark. The back-and-forth affair started when scored a power-play goal 6:24 into the contest; the Flyers then got the game’s next two goals, first from Oskar Lindblom at the 10:39 mark of the first and then from Sean Couturier 7:26 into the second. New Jersey tipped the scales back its way first on a Sami Vatanen power-play goal with 5:32 left in the second and then from Taylor Hall two seconds shy of the halfway point in the third. The Flyers didn’t wait long to knot the score, doing so on Joel Farabee’s first NHL goal with 8:31 to go. Couturier and Hart went on to secure the win in the shootout. Hart made 23 saves to earn the win, while Mackenzie Blackwood stopped 28 shots in absorbing the SOL. Stars of the Game: 1 – Sean Couturier; 2 – Taylor Hall; 3 – Sami Vatanen.

Thursday, February 6, 2020 – New Jersey 5, Flyers 0 at Wells Fargo Center: The Flyers could not solve Mackenzie Blackwood and the Devils despite 46 shots on goal and absorbed a 5-0 setback. LAST GAME

Tuesday, January 26, 2021 – Flyers 5, New Jersey 3 at Prudential Center: James van Riemsdyk scored twice on the power play to kickstart the Flyers and the team recovered from a brief Devils to pull away for the win, interrupting a two-game winless streak. van Riemsdyk’s first atlly came with 4:57 left in the first period and his second came 59 seconds into the second, opening up the two-goal advantage. New Jersey scored twice in the span of 4:44 later in the period to tie things up at 2-2 in the second intermission, but the Flyers got the game’s next two tallies – from Nolan Patrick at the 7:03 mark and from Joel Farabee just over 5 ½ minutes later – to put the game out of reach. An empty-netter from Ivan Provorov made it 5-2 with 1:36 to play; the Devils added one more with 1:08 remaining to close out the scoring. Brian Elliott turned aside 24 saves to take the win, while Scott Wedgewood absorbed the loss with 26 saves. Stars of the Game: 1 – James van Riemsdyk; 2 – Ivan Provorov; 3 – Claude Giroux.

James van Riemsdyk led the Flyers with seven shots on goal, all of which came in the game’s first 25 minutes.

Ivan Provorov had a three-point night with a goal and two assists, his fifth career three-point game and first since March 3, 2018 at Tampa. He was plus-2 and played 27:43, giving him his 41st career regular-season game of 27 minutes or more.

Claude Giroux played his 611th game as Flyers captain, passing Bob Clarke for the most games played in the role in franchise history. He had two assists and was plus-2.

Shayne Gostisbehere made his season debut and played 21:57, the most he’s played in a regular season game since November 15, 2019 when he played 23:45 at Ottawa. He was plus-2 with three shots on goal and two blocks.

Scott Laughton led the way for the Flyers in the faceoff circle at 64.3 pct (9-for-14) and led the team with three hits.

The Flyers outshot the Devils 31-26, marking the first time this season they’ve outshot their opponent.

The Flyers went 2-for-5 on the power play and are now at 29.1 percent on the man-advantage so far this season.

NOTES OF THE NIGHT

The Flyers are 36-60-6-6 all-time on the road against the Devils since the franchise moved to New Jersey in 1982; they have a .389 points percentage in that timeframe, which is one of their worst road records in any NHL city. The Flyers have won their last three games here at Prudential Center, and are trying to win four road games against the Devils for only the second time in their history. The last time they did that was a four-game run from December 10, 1983 to October 27, 1984, when they went 4-0 at what at the time was Arena at the Meadowlands.

James van Riemsdyk entered last night’s NHL slate tied for the league lead in power play goals with four. van Riemsdyk is one of two Flyers, along with Travis Konecny, hovering around the league leaders in overall goals with five on the season. It took van Riemsdyk 32 games to hit the seven-goal mark at the start of the 2019-20 season.

Konecny is tied with Jake Voracek and Kevin Hayes for the team lead in scoring with eight points apiece. Voracek leads the way with seven assists, while Hayes has seven of his eight points at even strength.

Brian Elliott has a 1.98 GAA in his three games so far this season, which was eighth in the league entering last night’s games. His save percentage was tied for seventh at .938.

Claude Giroux played his 611th game as captain on Tuesday, moving him past Bob Clarke for the most games in the role in franchise history. Giroux has appeared in 611 of a possible 615 games since taking over the captaincy in January of 2013 at the start of the shortened 2012-13 season. Clarke first took over the Flyers’ captaincy 48 years ago last week on Jan. 17, 1973. He served 498 games through the end of the 1978-79 season before becoming a player-assistant coach at the start of the 1979-80 season, a role he could not hold by league rule while still being the captain.
