Summary

I . Project Title

Techniques for Field Operation of Straddle-packer System in Deep Borehole

II. Objective and Importance of the Project

Currently, the conventional hydro-testing equipments are double packer system which is applicable to simple test, such as open hole slug test, constant injection and withdrawal test, and Lugeon test. This equipment consists of wireline for lift, PE tube for water injection or withdrawal, inflatable packer, packer tube, and test interval screen. Even though conventional equipment is suitable for medium to high permeable zone, the wellbore storage effect can effect the data quality and make time for hydro-testing.

Therefore, it is necessary to establish an appropriate hydro-testing tool for the qualified characterization of deep geological environments, especially for the hydraulic properties of rock formation.

HI. Scope and Contents of Project

This research project had been initiated for the purpose of establishment of advanced infra-structures in KURT (KAERI Underground Research Tunnel). The straddle packer system was developed for hydraulic characterization of geological formation using deep borehole.

This technical report consists of design concept, basic requirements, function of each part, field operation procedures and techniques, detail design drawings, and

v specifications.

IV. Result of Project

The qualified hydro-testing tool, which is suitable for medium to low permeable formation, using large and deep borehole, has been developed. This tool will be applied for the research project on development of HLW disposal technologies and the site characterization activities of LILW disposal project.

More specific parts for the enhancement of tool functions, such as constant rate controller, constant injection pump, DAS box, and trailor-based support laboratory, will be supplemented through the further design works.

Prior to field operation using this hydro-testing equipment, every researchers should be well acquainted with this technical report.

V. Proposal for Applications

A state-of-the-art test tool and trailer-based support laboratory have been designed and built to carry out straddle-packer testing at KURT facility site. The quality controlled hydraulic properties of rock mass formation will be provided for the HLW disposal system development, safety assessment, nuclide migration in natural barrier, and engineered barrier system development work. It is expected that this equipment and its technical contributions will enhance the domestic technical level in a field of site investigation.

Contract No. Abstract (15-20 Lines) It is necessary to establish an appropriate hydro-testing tool for the qualified characterization of deep geological environments, especially for the hydraulic properties of rock formation. This research project had been initiated for the purpose of establishment of advanced infra-structures in KURT. The straddle packer system was developed for hydraulic characterization of geological formation using deep borehole. This technical report consists of design concept, basic requirements, function of each part, field operation procedures and techniques, detail design drawings, and specifications. The qualified hydro-testing tool, which is suitable for medium to low permeable formation, using large and deep borehole, has been developed. This tool will be applied for the research project on development of HLW disposal technologies and the site characterization activities of LILW disposal project. Prior to field operation using this hydro-testing equipment, every researchers should be well acquainted
