PYTHON-5 NEWS:

DRDO conducts maiden trial of Python-5 Air to Air Missile. BACKGROUND: PYTHON 5:

➢ It is the fifth generation Python missile.

➢ It is an air to air missile built by the Israeli weapon manufacturer Rafael Advanced Defence Systems.

➢ The Israeli Government began manufacturing missiles in the name of “Shafir”. Later as it started exporting missiles it selected a western name “Python” or “Derby”.

➢ The Python-5 is currently the most capable Air to air missile in the inventory of .

➢ It is beyond visual range missile.

➢ The Beyond Visual Range missiles are those missiles that are capable of engaging at ranges beyond 37 km.

➢ It features an advanced seeker that includes Electro-Optical and Image .

➢ The Python 5 is capable to scan for the target area for the hostile aircraft and then locks on for terminal chase.

AIR TO AIR MISSILES

➢ Air to Air Missile (AAM) is a missile fired from an aircraft for the purpose of destroying another aircraft or any airborne object. ➢ AAM is either solid fuelled or sometimes they are liquid-fuelled. It evolved from unguided air-to-air rockets used during the first world war.

CLASSIFICATIONS OF AIR TO AIR MISSILE:

✓ Short Range Air to Air Missile (SRAAM) or Within Visual Range Air to Air Missile (WVRAAM) - within a range of 30 km.

✓ Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missile (BVRAAM) - beyond the range of 37Km.

AIR TO AIR MISSILE INDIGENOUSLY DEVELOPED:

➢ is the Beyond Visual Range Air to Air Missile (BVRAAM) developed by DRDO (Defence Research and Development Organisation).

➢ It can engage aerial targets at a range of 80 km – 110 km.

➢ It has been integrated with Sukhoi 30 Mki, Mirage 2000, LCA, MiG-29 fighter aircraft.
