FROM THE RECTOR

I trust you are well handling this time of isolation as positively as you are able. We all need to be taking care of our inner world as well as we are able. Isolation is a well-documented source of psychological stress and we need to manage ourselves so it doesn’t get on top of us. Isn’t it interesting then that spiritual strength and empowering is often found in isolation; retreats, quiet days and so on providing a deep well of spiritual, and consequently psychological, sustenance and strength. Part of the strength of faith at a time like this is the awareness of God’s presence, that God is with us even when no one else is. To use a theological term, its God immanence, His presence with us which strengthens and encourages us. Last Sunday we read about so called Doubting Thomas, that one disciples who had the courage to express his misgivings. Jesus doesn’t embarrass Thomas, He comes to Him in that upper room with the other disciples, and the key thing Jesus says to Thomas is, ‘Here I am’. The other aspect of faith which helps us through life’s difficulties is this challenge to hold the present and the future together in creative tension. Yes, we may struggle to various degrees with the limitations placed on us, both by government and through our own self-discipline. And yet we hold onto the knowledge that this won’t last, this will pass, things will recover, God’s hand is on us. This is true in all sorts of ways; mourning, loss, illness all bring challenges to us and we respond to all these challenges knowing God’s immanence (God with us) and knowing that things will shift and change if we hold on with faith and hope. My prayer and conviction through hope is that you would be well in your soul and spirit during this time, that you would know God with you, but that you would also be looking forward in hope to that time when we are able to live connected lives once again.

Rev Stephen Harrison (Rector Stroudwater Team)

NEWS FROM ST. SWITHUN’S

Hello everyone, Not much to say really about St. Swithun’s building or the events that should have happened there through Holy Week leading to Easter celebrations, there was of course nothing happening! At least nothing happening in the church, but the church family was out and about in their villages and homes and linked by prayer and technology. We have all been trying to keep up a pattern of services and a focus on the story of Easter, the big questions, the promises fulfilled and the impact on people then and now. Our clergy team has worked so hard to help everyone cope in Stroudwater Benefice now there is no access to those so familiar scene setting buildings, and I’m sure the church family very much appreciate all that Steve, Liz and Dave are doing by way of the facebook page and phone calls. Actually St. Swithun’s building has not been totally ignored, the big wooden Cross in the churchyard was in place for Good Friday and then hung with the traditional white sheet which remains till Ascension Day, and inside church, the altars, lectern and pulpit have the celebratory gold and white patterned frontals designed by Yvonne Bell for this Easter Season. Out and about there have been a least two Easter gardens spotted and prayer candles in so many windows on Sundays are very heart warming. The Diocese should get a mention and thanks for the services they provide through their website. In a recent little video Bishop Rachel was talking through a simple way to review each day and remember it with prayer using five emoji drawings. A few years ago the Bishop encouraged us to use a prayer that began – ‘God of hope and transformation……’ Just those few words seem comforting at the moment. All good wishes and prayers from Pat and Julia Churchwardens

NEWS FROM ST GEORGE’S CHURCH Greetings April 23: St George’s Day. Our Patron Saint. Usually the flag of St George is flying from the tower……. Usually we would have a celebratory choral concert and a little something afterwards…. Usually…….

Carolyn is five minutes from the church and pops down most days to check that all is well. She and Richard Bryant actually feel it is objectionable to close, lock and bar the church, which we had to do by order of the Diocese. The arrangement, in the first week of restrictions, was that people were allowed to visit the church but had to observe social distancing. That seemed to be sufficient (the church does have hand-washing facilities even though hand sanitizer was then hard to get). The church was open for private prayer and a haven of contemplation. Richard Page encountered two carers and their companion in the church in that first week: they had nowhere else to go because all the cafes were closed. The Government ‘Lockdown’ changed that.

In reality we cannot go there and must just keep the church and, most importantly, all the people in our hearts and wait until we meet again

Vanessa is too far away even to stroll by but can see the church, in the distance, from her garden up the hill. Her exercise consists of walking ‘twice around the daffodils’ [her flower borders not The Daffodils]. It reminds her of a film about an isolation hospital starring Juliet Mills as a nurse. As patients recovered they were allowed a short wheelchair trip outside – twice around the daffodils, to refresh the mind and body. Recently, the weather has blessed us all with beautiful spring days. Though she cannot go out her family climb the hill from the village over the fields and ‘visit’ over the hedge twice a week. Other families are not so lucky and cannot physically see one another; may they soon ‘meet again’.

Though apart we, as a church, still pray constantly for those affected by Covid—19, for safety; recovery; compassion for the dying and bereaved; those wonderful people risking all to care for those in hospitals and homes. Lord graciously hear us and hear our prayer.

In the story; St George travelled in search of that dragon to slay – we too, all of us, can slay the dragon – by staying home.

Stay safe and well Carolyn and Vanessa

FROM THE BAPTIST CHURCH We’re all in this together. Yes and no. Yes, because anybody can go down with the virus, even the heir to the throne, even the P M., even previously healthy young people. No, because many of us have gardens, secure incomes, we are not ‘on the front line’, daily risking our lives through merely doing our jobs. This means that being grateful has taken on a new meaning, seen powerfully in the Thursday night round of applause. It means that we have unmasked the lie that there are unskilled workers (who therefore must be lower paid). Every job has skills to be learnt, many of us for all our qualifications and certificates simply do not have the skills required to do many tasks which are essential to the health of society. It has been interesting to see the way in which our gratitude has spread from Nurses and Doctors to lorry drivers, supermarket staff, cleaners, refuse disposal officers, (not our unthinking condescension ‘of bin men’) amongst others. Hopefully we have learnt to appreciate things and people in a new way. Family, friends and neighbours -because we have missed family get togethers, because of help and support offered and received; and ‘strangers’ who have made space on our walks, who have smiled and offered greetings. Perhaps we have appreciated spring in an enhanced way, in our gardens, on those walks, the blossom the flowers etc etc. If we turn our thoughts beyond this country there is the stark reality of places where social distancing is much harder, where medical provision is inadequate at the best of times. This year’s Christian Aid week will be different, and there could be the danger of it getting somewhat lost amid all our other concerns. Elsewhere in this edition there will be a reminder of how we can contribute, how we can express our gratitude for our relative good fortune through appreciating that we are bound together as human beings. In the parable of the sheep and the goats the king says, “You have my Father’s blessing, …… For when I was hungry, you gave me food; when thirsty, you gave me a drink; when I was a stranger, you took me into your home; when naked you clothed me; when ill you came to my help; when in prison you visited me.” Gratitude and appreciation, ’we re all in this together, yes indeed, but some more than others, not just in our land but throughout the world. God bless, Robert Draycott (Rev) PS- I have been writing mini messages to send out to our regulars on Sundays. They are brief and have been well received. Feel free to access them on our website:- ksbc.org.uk - the latest begins with a spoiler alert re a certain white bearded jovial red suited man ………… 6

CHRISTIAN AID WEEK 10th—16th May www.christian.aid.org.uk

Information from Christian Aid Christian Aid Week has not been cancelled. Under the current circumstances, sadly, house-to-house collections, delivery-only collections have been cancelled as have the usual fund raising events. Instead, Christian Aid Week is moving online! We are building a vibrant, virtual Christian Aid Week so you can take part with our online community. We would love you to join in to show love for our neighbours near and far, as a global family. Coronavirus has shown us that our futures are bound more tightly together than ever before. And now it is spreading across the world’s poorest countries, putting people living in poverty at great risk. These people are already facing a lack of water, food and healthcare. Some are homeless. Some are living with underlying health issues such as HIV. As coronavirus infection rates speed up, they will feel the impacts of the virus deeply. The coronavirus outbreak threatens the health of our neighbours near and far. Together we need to respond quickly to help the most vulnerable. Coronavirus impacts all of us. But love unites us all.

7

Christian Aid global response Christian Aid and our partners already have experience of limiting the spread of infection during the Ebola crisis, and we will build on this experience to continue to stand together with communities living in poverty during this period. If infection rates start to develop as they are in Europe, then people in poorer countries will be hit even harder. Many are already living with reduced health resilience because of extreme poverty, or in overcrowded humanitarian camps and in countries which do not have the healthcare infrastructures needed to combat widespread disease. We will be working on the ground to help prepare communities to limit the impact of Covid-19. Please pray for us in this vital work, and support us where you can by making an online donation. Together with our local partners, we are working quickly to limit the impact of coronavirus in some of the most vulnerable communities around the world.

• We are drawing on our experience from the Ebola crisis and helping communities to prevent and delay infection. • We are providing essential soap, water and handwashing training. • We are ensuring urgent health messages get through to help keep people safe. • We are working through our networks of church partners and faith- based organisations to reach the most vulnerable at this critical time.

With your help we can do even more.

PRAYER IN A TIME OF CORONAVIRUS Loving God Instil in our shaken souls the belief and hope that all things are possible with your creative love for strangers to become friends for science to source solutions for resources to be generously shared so everyone, everywhere, may have what they need for your perfect love that knows no borders may cast out any fear and selfishness that divides. May your love that never ends be our comfort, strength and guide for the wellbeing of all and the glory of God. Amen. 8

KING’S STANLEY FOOTBALL CLUB

Roger Bassett (of KS FC) has kindly provided the following information.

All local leagues have been suspended and will not be completed. The two leagues that King’s Stanley take part in, the Northern Senior League (1st XI) and the League (2nd XI), are proposing different solutions to promotion and relegation.

The Senior League are proposing no promotion or relegation from their two leagues (Divs. 1 and 2) however a club has resigned from Div 1 and there is a chance that, given our playing record last season, KS 1st XI could be asked to fill that position.

The Stroud League are proposing that the final positions in their 7 Divisions are decided on a "points per game" system with promotion based on final league positions. The KS 2nd XI finished in third place in Div.5 but it is also possible that they could be promoted due to the proposed restructuring of the leagues above which would create a vacancy in Div.4!

So no more football this season and the future positions of the King’s Stanley teams still to be decided. Updates for King’s Stanley and Leonard Stanley should be ready for the next issue of the magazine along perhaps with news on the local cricket scene.

TRIBUTE to THE MILLIONS Let us remember those who so selfishly gave their lives at home and abroad, whose sacrifice enables us to enjoy the peace and freedom we have today. Let us remember those who came home wounded, physically and mentally, and the friends and family who cared for them. Let us remember the families that lost husbands, sons and sweethearts. Let us remember the servicemen, merchant seamen, miners, brave civilians and others from Commonwealth and Allied countries who fought, suffered and died during several years of war. Let us remember those in reserved occupations and the brave people who kept us save on the home front—the doctors and nurses who cared for the wounded, The women and men who toiled in the fields, those who worked in the factories, who all played such a vital role in the war effort at home.

GARDENING IN MAY Hullo fellow gardeners! What strange times we live in to be sure, but Nature can’t be cancelled or held back – so here’s my usual May offering, We have been blessed with wonderful sunny days at the time of writing, and with occasional rain, long may that continue. "Rough winds do shake the darling buds of May...... " as Shakespear has it, and it is true that May can be so cruel. Spring might rush in upon us, but don’t assume that frosts are over, and we must be vigilant about protecting against possible damage. It is better to be safe than sorry. Harden off any plants that have been in a snug greenhouse and move them to a cold-frame or sheltered position outside, as cold winds can damage tender leaves. Runner beans grown under cover can go out now, weather permitting. I set out a bean plant to every other stick, and a seed to the rest, so ensuring succession. French beans can be sown outside, but protect with cloches or tunnels to bring them on before they rot in the ground. Give the plants plenty of room, they will do better as a result. Sweet corn is usually started in small pots under cover, but if the weather is suitable, can be sown directly. They need to be planted in blocks, not rows, as they are wind-pollinated, but it is not worth the effort if there are deer around, as they will do anything to get at it. Keep sowing small rows of lettuce, so that they are continually coming along. Home-grown peas are just so delicious, it is worth making space for a few. I like Hurst Green Shaft, but there are lots of good peas about. Marrows and courgettes can be planted out, but cover against chilly nights. You can plant up hanging baskets and patio pots now, and garden centres have a good selection to choose from. If you want to encourage bees, choose single flowers, as these have the pollinating bits the bees want; to bees, double flowers are a waste of space! Gooseberry sawfly can completely strip a bush of leaves almost overnight. You can be kept from the garden for a couple of days, and the damage is done. They don't kill the bush, but weaken it. Shake them off, or spray them with something suitable. A good mulch under the bush can help deter the sawfly adults from emerging from the ground. Lily beetles are a menace, and make a nasty mess of the plants, eating their leaves and leaving their sticky droppings. Provado is effective, but you can catch them if you hold your hand under the leaf before alarming them, otherwise they fall to the ground and hide. Once caught, deal with them as you will. Codling moth traps can be hung in apple trees now, and plum moth traps are also available. Enjoy your gardening, May is a lovely time, and we all hope for good weather. The garden is a good place to be locked-down in, and in due course we will invite our friends to admire all the hard work. Lucy Chubb. 26

DR. DAVID P HAUSER 21.3.44-20.2.20 David was born in Ramsey, Isle Of Mann the eldest of five children. Following a move to Southend on Sea he was educated at Southend High School for Boys, continuing his education at Cambridge University He then lectured at both the Universities ofEast Anglia and Bristol before joining the Civil Service. He held senior posts within the Department of Energy and the Department of Trade and Industry, before moving to the gas and electricity regulator, Ofgem, as a Regional Director. His most high profile work was the post of Secretary to the Sizewell B Inquiry. This was the inquiry into the proposal to build the controversial Nuclear Pressurised Water Reactor at Sizewell Suffolk. He had two children with his former wife. He moved to Kings Stanley with his partner, Alison, and her two children in 1995. They married in 2011. Having been brought up a Roman Catholic and required to be an Altar Boy he was forced to attend Church three times on a Sunday. This led him to spend the rest of his life a confirmed atheist. It was therefore somewhat surprising that in about 2005 David should take an interest in Church Bell Ringing at St Laurence Stroud. Subsequently David decided to join us at Leonard Stanley which was a comparatively short walk or cycle ride from his home in Kings Stanley. Like many ringers who learn later in life, David had to persist with his learning but eventually even mastered that most testing of methods, Stedman. He was a regular and faithful ringer for both practices and Sunday Service. It was not only bell ringing that held David’s interest. A lifelong love of classical music was coupled with a collection of over 1000 CD’s and his love of playing the piano. The fact that he was a keen bridge player undoubtedly gave him the mental agility to ring Stedman. He was also generous with his time and administrative skills which he put to good use in the local community. He held, at different times, the Chairmanships of Maidenhill School Board of Governors, Kings Stanley Parish Council and The Marling Trust (Kings Stanley Playing Field), which he persuaded me to take on as bouts of ill health restricted his ability to fulfil the role to the standard he felt appropriate. He was also a jam maker, usually basing his production on the surplus black currents and damsons from my garden as his allotment did not produce such fruits. The pay back for this was by way of helping me to mow a section of St. George’s churchyard. David was a thoughtful, quietly spoken, but strong character with a dry sense of humour. This strength has been of great benefit over the past year or so, particularly with the frustrations of the time it has taken to diagnose his health issues, which had troubled him for several years – he was finally diagnosed with Neuroendocrine Cancer in October 2018. He died at home supported by Alison, his devoted step children and the wonderful carers from Longfield. It has been a pleasure to have known, worked and socialised with him. Richard J Page Footnote Alison has set up ‘Just Giving ‘ web sites to support three charities, any of which in these troubled times particularly need your support.
