EATONIA NEWS BULLETIN www.eatonia.ca

On September 10, 2019, the council of the Town of Eatonia passed the Protective Services Cost Recovery Bylaw No. 2/19 where the cost of fire prevention, suppression and emergency response services will be charged to the property owner who receives the service. This means that residents will be responsible for paying their own fire protection services. This will come into effect on January 1, 2020.

The Town of Eatonia, R.M. of Chesterfield No. 261 and R.M. of Newcombe No. 260 established a fire protection district which is known as the CEN Fire Protection Association. This association provides fire protection services to all residents within the boundaries.

Below is a breakdown of the fees they charge for fire protection services:

SERVICE PROVIDED FEE CHARGED

Rural Call Out for the 1st Hour $1,000.00 Urban Call Out for the 1st Hour $1,000.00 Extra Call Out Hours Prorated After 1st Hour $500.00 per hour prorated Man Hours $15.00 per man per hour prorated st Extrication for the 1 Hour $500.00 Extrication After the 1st Hour $500.00 per hour prorated Oil Field Call Out to Industrial Site $1,800.00 Non Production Call Out After 1st Hour $450.00 per hour prorated

Single Engine Aircraft Tanker (SEAT) As invoiced by the Provincial Government

If the fire department is dispatched for a false alarm, the property owner will be charged a fee as per the rates set out above. A false alarm is any incident in which fire personnel are paged or respond to a fire alarm system or security alarm system that is activated by mistake or as a result of a malfunction. Make sure to check your fire or security alarm system on a regular basis to avoid a false alarm.

Make sure to check with your insurance broker to make sure that you have coverage for fire protection services in your policy.

If you have any questions about the Protective Services Cost Recovery Bylaw, please contact the town office or a council member.

If you have a home/tenant/condo policy with Wawanesa, you automatically have $10,000 coverage for Fire Protection Services built into your policy. Higher limits are available at a cost of $10.00/$1000. If you have a home/tenant/condo policy with SGI , you will have to buy this coverage separately. This cost is $20.00 for the first $5000.00 of coverage and $10.00/$1000 for higher limits. If you have any questions or would like to have this coverage added to your policy, please contact our office. The Staff at Eatonia Agencies Ltd. 306-967-2201

EATONIA ARENA NEEDS YOUR HELP!!

The number of Minor Hockey families is dwindling. As you may or may not be aware, these families volunteer their time to fulfill the caretaking duties at the rink. There are not enough bodies to do this! If you are willing to help—by signing up for a weekend or putting your name on a list as a back-up Zamboni operator, caretaker, or whatever! Your help would be greatly appreciated! Give Gwen Britton (Recreation Director) a call at 306-460-7130 or email her at [email protected]

We are also exploring the idea of getting some one in to help with the cleaning:

CLEANING OPPORTUNITY:

 Five hours per week cleaning at the Eatonia Arena  Duties to include (but not limited to):  All bathrooms  Dressing rooms  Floors, spectator area, empty garbages, etc in Lobby  Glass in spectator area  Windows, doors, etc.

 Floor scrubber in facility. Preference may be given to those with floor scrubber experience!  Criminal Reference check necessary upon hiring.

Please submit resume, including expected wages to: [email protected] or drop off to Gwen Britton at the Town Office by NOVEMBER 4, 2019.

(Note: The decision has not been finalized as to whether we will move forward with this. Eatonia Recreation and

Eatonia Minor Hockey Association is working together to come up with solutions)

Thank you in advance for your help!!

Santa’s Shop

Eatonia Oasis Living / Santa’s Shop

Box 217 Eatonia, SK S0L 0Y0

Dear Eatonia and area residents,

The West Central Crisis and Family Support Centre has taken a break this year from planning their 26th annual Christmas Drive. The program will be re-vamped for next year however in an effort to keep this program running, Eatonia Oasis Living will be taking it over for the 2019 year.

The main objective of Santa’s Shop is to raise funds for Eatonia Oasis Living Care Home through a self-esteem building program, which allows children of our community 14 and under an opportunity to buy NEW GIFTS for their parents (or guardians) and siblings. Registration for participating children will be sent out at school (pre-school children can be registered by contacting Holly Odland - information below)

We are asking residents, clubs and businesses to donate MONEY OR NEW GIFTS ONLY, suitable for children to buy for their family members. There is always a shortage of gifts for men and teenagers, so if you could keep that in mind it would be greatly appreciated. If you would prefer to make a cash donation that would be welcomed, as it enables us to purchase a wider variety of gifts.

Santa’s Shop in Eatonia will be held on December 14, 2019 from 2:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Community Hall during the Old Fashioned Christmas Celebration. Donation drop off will be at Eatonia Oasis Living, The Town of Eatonia Office or mail to address listed above or directly to Holly Odland. For more information, please call Holly Odland at 306-430-4180 or email [email protected]

Official Tax receipts will be issued for any cash donation of $20.00 or more. Receipts can also be issued for gift in kind donations for the purchase price of the item if a cash register receipt is presented with the gift items.

Merry Christmas Holly Odland Santa`s Shop Coordinator

Santa’s Shop Registration Childs Name:______

In an effort to streamline the shopping process and to make this activity cost effective we are asking that you pre-register your child(ren) this year. Please return this form and any donations to the school/EOL/Town office or directly to Holly Odland by Nov 14.th. This form will be given back to your child when they line up at the event. We are asking that your child buys for their parents or guardian and siblings only to keep this program running as a feasible fundraiser. (some exceptions may apply for children living with other family members that are their caregivers- my discretion)

As previous years, adults are not allowed in the shop and children may only shop once. Absolutely no returns or exchanges – your child uses their imagination and heart (with a little volunteer guidance) to pick you the perfect present!

PLEASE NOTE On the day of the event only send the amount of money that you are allowing your child to spend as it is considered a donation and change will not be provided. All proceeds to Eatonia Oasis Living Care Home.

NOVEMBER RECREATION NEWS

2020 Celebrity Sportsman Dinner: We will be having our Celebrity Sportsman Dinner in March/April this year and we are excited to announce that we have narrowed it down to 3 people. The Rec Board & Gwen are just waiting to hear back from our first choice. I would like to extend a very big thank you to Janelle Layton, Kristen Somerville, Cora Knuttila, Susan Theaker, Brittnay Warner, Robyn Fuerstenberg and Delia Massey for joining the 2020 Celebrity Sportsman Dinner Committee. If you are interested in volunteering at the event please call Gwen at 306-460-7130.

Recreation Board: The Recreation Board is accepting applications for the vacant Recreation Board Member positions. If you are interested in joining the board and have an interest in recreation in our community, please contact Gwen for an application at [email protected] or 306-460-7130.

Grants: Recently SaskEnergy sent out emails asking communities to apply for one of 30 SaskEnergy’s 2019-20 “Share the Warmth Grants”, which is intended to help take the bite out of winter’s cold for people that may need that extra help. I applied for the grant, bringing forward the idea of doing food hampers in January for our local communities and Eston. Also to pay for a small portion of SaskEnergy bills for those selected, who are finding it hard to stay warm this winter. Our grant was picked from 30 entries as one of two top picks. However SaskEnergy couldn’t decide between our community and Eston’s for the top grant so we both received payments of $1750.00 each. With organizing the hampers we are looking for donations of items such as diapers, female sanitary items, baby formula, toothpaste/brushes and laundry soap. The deadline would be Dec 31/19 for donations and hampers will be going out in January 2020. Please drop items off at the Town Office.

Another grant that was applied for with SaskEnergy was funding to start a yearly “Senior of the Year Award” and also tie it into a yearly Volunteer Appreciation Event. SaskEnergy has given us $1000.00 to go towards this event. I am working with the Eatonia Heritage Board with bringing committee’s/boards together to celebrate this event. More details to follow soon.

We also applied for the annual CIF grant for programs to run for youth/seniors/students for the upcoming year. We hope to know in the next 2 months if we are awarded the grant. Special thank you to Cora Knuttila for helping me with some specific’s with the grant. Your help was very greatly appreciated.

SPRA: Thank you very much to the Eatonia Recreation Board for sending me to the Parks & Recreation Association Annual conference in North recently. I met Rec Directors/Coordinators from LaRonge, Sask to Elrose, Sask. While at the Conference I went to mini workshops such as; “Better Together” T’Shirt Project, Kinderkids, Street Festival Fun, Strategic Decision Making/MindMapping, and Financial Statement Discussion and Analysis. Everyone at the conference also received Kendal Netmaker’s book “Driven To Succeed” From Poverty To Podium. “An inspiring true story of how a kid from the rez became a successful entrepreneur and speaker…” I will be donating it to the Eaton School. Thank you again for sending me.

Hockey: Hockey season is well on its way with ice going in the first week of November at the arena. This hockey season we have Initiation, Novice, Atom, PeeWee, Midget, The Senior Huskies and Wheatkings playing at the Eatonia Memorial Arena.

Hallowe’en Quiz: The 3 winners of our Hallowe’en quiz that were randomly drawn were; Kailyn Aldridge, Leah Thiessen and Elodie & Blakely Becker. Congratulations! Prizes are available for pick up Oct 31/19 from 1 - 4pm at the Town Office. Thank you to everyone that handed in a quiz! Watch for our Christmas Quiz coming out soon!

Hockey Signs: On behalf of the Rec Board we would like to say Thank You for all the renewals coming in for the arena advertising signage from the community. We also have our very first ever signage coming in for the pool season as well. Thank you for supporting our community recreation services!

Zombie Walk: We had a 100% turn out for our 1st ever Zombie Walk and our winners were Logan Busby, Laura Kelly and Anita Hoffman. They all received a certificate for free face painting from Robyn Beauchamp-Fuerstenberg for any event for the following year. Thank you Robyn for donating face painting prizes to the Zombie Walk. Thank you to EOL for being our home base when our zombies registered. Our next Zombie Walk will be in July at a late night Swim Night!
