The Institute of Statistics of Albania (INSTAT) in cooperation with the drafted for the first time a special publication of the main indicators on tourism in Albania. Referring to the period from 2013-2017, statistics regarding foreign and domestic tourists in Albania aim to monitor the characteristics and developments of tourism in our country.

In the new communication strategy, INSTAT has been oriented to meet the needs of users by targeting different user groups.

The material reflects some of the basic requirements and needs of some user groups for data on foreign and domestic tourists and their impact on the Albanian economy.

This dedicated publication presents figures on economic reality in the country and answers to growing demands for statistical information of decision-makers, researchers and academics in Albania. The preparation of this material is enabled thanks to the cooperation and administrative data provided by the Bank of Albania, ministries and other institutions.

Tourism statistics are under the focus of INSTAT, where work has begun for the construction of Tourism Satellite Accounts.

Cooperation with other institutions and policy makers increases the responsibility of INSTAT for compiling specific publications and statistical information that would serve to better understand the economic reality in order to face the challenges of the future.

INSTAT will always provide continues partnership and fruitful cooperation, as this publication also proves.

The tourism industry occupies a key place in the economy and is an important source for the development of the country. Tourism can make a significant contribution to three dimensions of sustainable development: create jobs generate trade opportunities to recognize needs and support tourism activities create important capacity that promotes environmental conservation priorities and cultural diversity.

The production of statistics harmonized with tourism supply and demand today is considered crucial to enable decision-makers to evaluate and improve this important economic sector.

Referring to the period 2013-2017, statistics regarding foreign and domestic tourists in Albania aim to monitor the characteristics and developments of tourism in our country.

This material, prepared by INSTAT, is published for the first time, including data for the reference years 2013-2017 and will be continuous publication with annual frequency.

The material consists of five chapters. The first chapter presents the characteristics of the arrivals of foreign citizens by region, the way of travelling, the length of stay, as well as the expenses of foreign tourists in Albania.

The second chapter shows the outflow of Albanian residents abroad, expenses according to the purpose of the visit, the main destinations, etc.

The third chapter presents some macroeconomic indicators such as foreign tourists' expenditures in relation to GDP, expense of tourists abroad to total imports of goods and services, value added and the number of employees directly related to tourism activities.

The fourth chapter focuses on accommodation capacities in Albania, providing information on the number of accommodation units, the number of total rooms and the number of beds.

The five chapter focuses on other tourist activities by providing information on the number of visitors to archaeological parks, museums, and monuments.

The main findings written in the material show that the arrivals of foreign citizens for the period 2013-2017 have increased on average by 12.0 %, while the expenses of foreign tourists (non-residents) in our country have increased on average 8.5 % for the same period.

In the period 2013-2017, the departures of Albanian citizens increased by an average of 7.2 %, while the expenses of Albanian citizens (resident) abroad increased by an average of 2.2 %.

In the period 2013-2017, the number of visitors who visited the forts and monuments was 621,061, with the largest increase during the reference period, averaging 51.5 %.

FOREIGNERS ARRIVED IN THE COUNTRY … In the period 2013-2017, the arrivals of foreign citizens coming to Albania were approximately 21 million. At this time, the arrivals of foreign citizens had the tendence to increase by an average of 12.0 % per year.

Arrivals from 's region accounted for the largest share of foreign citizens' arrivals by 92.4 % and have increased on average by 12.3 % over the period 2013-2017. By 2017, arrivals from the European region increased by 4.5 % compared to the previous year.

Foreign citizens entering Albania come mainly from: (34 %), Macedonia (13 %), (10 %), and (7 % each).

In the period 2013-2017, approximately 2.1 million foreign citizens have arrived by air, increasing by an average of 16.7 %. In 2017, the number of foreign citizens arrivals Albania by air has increased by 26.5 % compared to the previous year. Foreign citizens entering our country through air lines occupy an average of 10 % of total arrivals.

WHY TRAVEL? In the period 2013-2017, the arrivals of foreign citizens for personal purposes (holiday, visit to relatives, health, religious purposes, etc.) occupy most of the arrivals of foreign citizens , averaging 98.7 %. The number of foreign citizens arrivals for personal purposes this period increased by an average of 12.1 %. While arrivals for business purpose account for 1.3 % of total arrivals , increasing by an average of 10.2 %.

HOW MUCH DO THEY SPEND? In the period 2013-2017, the non-residents' expenses in Albania were 1,044,839 million leks. The average growth of these expenses for this period is about 8.5%. Expenses incurred by non-residents for personal purposes occupy 79.4 % and for business purposes accounted for 20.6 % of total expenditures.

Non-residents, referring to data from 2017, have spent on average 4.2 over nights in Albania, spending an average of 63 euros per day. Foreign citizens (non-residents) for 2017, stayed mostly at the hotel (79 %) and came with private cars (75 %). Foreign citizens who prefer to visit Albania for 2017 are citizens from Kosovo.

In the period 2013-2017, the departures of Albanian citizens abroad was 22.6 million people, with an average increase of 7.2 %. In 2017, Albanian citizenss' departures increased by 6.9 % compared to 2016. Albanians travel more for summer holidays. Departures of Albanian residents abroad culminate in August, referring to data of 2017.

In 2017, the expenditures of Albanian (resident) countries abroad increased by 8.1% compared to 2016. Residents' expenses for personal travel account for the largest part, on average 75.9%, and for business travel expenditures and professional 24.1 % of total expenditures

Resident Albanian citizens, referring to data of 2017, spent on average 7.8 overnights abroad, spending an average of 56 euros per day. Departures of Albanian citozens (resident abroad for 2017 were mainly for the purpose of holiday = (about 55 % of departures) and visits to friends of relatives (about 31% of departures).

In the period 2013-2017, the expenditures of foreign tourists (non-residents) in our country over GDP are on average 13.3%, while the expenditures of Albanian citizens (resident) abroad over GDP are 11.2% on average. In 2017, the exepnditure of foreign tourists (non-residents) in our country over GDP is 14.9 %, while the expenses of Albanian citizens (residents) abroad over GDP are 11.0 %.

Activities directly related to tourism generated 39 billion of added value during 2017, contributing around 2.5% to GDP. Taking into account the indirect effects of tourist spending on other economic activities, this contribution is higher.

NUMBER OF TOURIST PER EMPLOYEE During 2016 in our country came about 4.7 million foreign citizens , while only employees in the activities related directly to tourism are about 30 thousand persons, which means every employee in these activities serves and cares for about 157 visitors to foreign.

In 2016, 1.242 accommodation facilities (hotels, motels, camps, guesthouses, shelters and other structures for short-term stays) were functioning throughout the country. The total number of rooms in these structures was 17,692 and the beds were 41,376 thousand. During 2013-2016, the total number of accommodation structures (operating during the period) increased by an average of 20.3% and the number of beds in them increased by 13.3%.

During 2013-2017, the number of hotel construction permits was 134. In 2017, 53 were issued for hotel construction, increasing by 5 times compared to the previous year.

5. Other tourism activities

In the period 2013-2017, the number of visitors visiting archaeological parks, museums, forts and other monuments has been approximately 2.4 million people with an annual average increaseof 19.5%. In 2017, the number of visitors visiting archaeological parks, museums, forts and other monuments increased by 20.6% compared to the previous year.

At this time, the number of visitors who visited the fortress and other monuments had an average annual increase of 51.5% followed by the number of visitors to the archaeological parks by 21.7%, and those in the museum 7. 2%. In 2017, the number of visitors to the museum increased by 29.7%, followed by the number of visitors who visited the fortress and other monuments with 22.2% and visitors to the archaeological parks with 13.3%.
