I didn’t want to let him relax too much and then make a run from the three-eighths pole. This demonstrates how vital Florida-breds are to the success of Gulfstream Park throughout the year—not just during the Spring/Summer season. Additional good news for Florida breeders—66% of those Florida-bred winners during the Gulfstream Park Championship Meet were sired by Florida stallions. Florida-breds: Race ‘Em or Chase ‘Em! In his last race of 2020, Firenze Fire was second to Sleepy Eyes Todd in the Grade 3 Mr. Prospector Stakes going seven fur- longs at Gulfstream on Dec. 19. That came after a solid third- place behind winner Whitmore and runner-up and fellow Florida- bred C Z Rocket in the Breeders’ Cup Sprint (G1) at Keeneland. Betamethasone is a Class C, anti-inflammatory drug that is legally used in thoroughbreds in Kentucky. The legal limit is 10 picograms in Kentucky and according to Baffert, 21 picograms were discovered in a post-race blood sample taken immediately following Medina Spirit’s win in the Kentucky Derby at Churchill Downs on May 1. Baffert set a record for the most victories in the Kentucky Derby for a trainer as Medina Spirit was the seventh winner of the Run for Roses from his barn. Medina Spirit is also the seventh Florida-bred to win the Kentucky Derby. “[Saturday], I got a call from [assistant trainer] Jimmy Barnes as I was heading to the airport. He said he had some horrible news that our Derby horse, Medina Spirit, tested positive for 21 picograms of Betamethasone,” Baffert said during the Sunday morning press conference streamed live by The Paulick Report. This is the second horse in the last eight months from the Baffert barn that has tested positive for betamethasone in a major race at Churchill Downs. Last year, Gamine was disqualified from a third-place finish in the Sept. 4 Longines Kentucky Oaks (G1) for having more than the 10 picogram legal limit in her post-race blood sample. In a Jan. 30, 2021 Stewards Ruling, Baffert was fined $1,500 and Gamine was disqualified from placing and purse money was forfeited. “All I can tell you is that Betamethasone—even though it is an Bob Baffert with Florida-bred Medina Spirit/COADY PHOTO allowed drug and a therapeutic medication—Medina Spirit has never been treated with Betamethazone,” Baffert said.
