Region & Vineyards Located in the south western corner of Australia, Margaret River enjoys near perfect conditions for viticulture. Its west coast Mediterranean climate features mild, wet winters and warm, dry summers - ideal for the growth of high quality fruit. By comparison with Bordeaux, Margaret River enjoys less rain during a longer, drier moderate growing and ripening period.

Our vineyards are planted on gravel loam and loam soils which, combined with prevailing summer sea breezes from the Southern and Indian Oceans and temperate conditions during the ripening period, provide for the development of complex characters and aromas.

Origins of the Name & Peregrine Falcon Vasse Felix took its unusual name as a tribute to the brave explorations & risks of the 19th century French explorers, in particular to highlight two men: omas Vasse and Captain Hamelin.

omas Vasse was a French seaman who drowned in the rough surf while exploring the Western Australian coastline as part of the expedition of Captain Hamelin’s Naturaliste and Captain Baudin’s Geographe. Felix was Captain Hamelin’s middle name, and paradoxically, is also the word for lucky in Latin.

e bird depicted on the Vasse Felix label is a peregrine falcon. As native birds were an immense problem at harvest, Dr Cullity used trained falcons to deter the silver eyes and parrots from disturbing the maturing grapes. In another unlucky incident, these ‘trained’ falcons failed to return to Dr. Cullity after free flying.
