From HAWAIIAN QUEEN ASCOT BLOODSTOCK Chestnut Colt DOB 31/10/06 By DUBAI DESTINATION (USA) from HAWAIIAN QUEEN (AUS) (by Dieu D’Or) This compact, powerful colt is by a regally bred Group One winning representative of Mr Prospector’s world class Kingmambo sireline, who also hails from one of the world’s elite producing families. His dam is by Biscay’s influential son Dieu D’Or, and from the revered Australasian family of Eulogy, a continuing source of stakeshorses. Bred on both the outstanding Mr Prospector/ Star Kingdom cross and the highly successful Northern Dancer / Star Kingdom cross, this colt carries a pedigree packed with genetics for top class juvenile speed. This is further enhanced by brilliant linebreeding to numerous influences for elite performance, including the family of Mr Prospector himself. Chestnut Colt Foaled 31 st October 2006 By DUBAI DESTINATION (USA) From HAWAIIAN QUEEN (AUS) Five generation inbreeding : nil Sire: DUBAI DESTINATION (USA) Bay 1999. To stud in GB and Australia 2004. A representative of Kingmambo’s world class branch of the Mr Prospector sireline, from the royally bred mare Mysterial – a daughter of dual Arc d’ Triomphe winner Alleged, and a half sister to International Champion sprinter-miler Agnes World and Japan’s Champion sprinter-miler Hishi Akebono. 8 starts, 4 wins, 2 seconds. Brilliant winner at two years of the Doncaster Champagne Stakes (7 furlongs), defeating a class field including superhorse Rock Of Gibraltar, and a G1 winner at four over the mile. Half brother to Librettist, dual G1 winner and exciting new sire, from the family of International Champion sire Red Ransom. Sire of multiple stakeswinners and a G1 winning juvenile (Ibn Khaldun – Racing Post Trophy) from his first crop - the only son of Kingmambo to achieve this to date – and in Australia, stakes placed Dubai To Sydney. His oldest Australian progeny are 2yos. Dam: HAWAIIAN QUEEN (AUS) Bay 1998 Winner at 1000m. By Biscay’s excellent son Dieu D’or from Hula Ruler, by the G1 winning sprinter Turf Ruler (Oakleigh Plate). Hawaiian Queen hails from the family of the great Australasian foundation mare Eulogy which is producing elite racehorses to the present day. She died this year after bearing only two live foals; our colt and her oldest foal now a 2Y0. Second dam Hula Ruler by Turf Ruler . Winner at 1000m . Three quarter sister to EXCEPTIONAL ANGEL (6 wins 1200-2400m, stakeswinner) Dam of 8 foals, all raced, 6 winners including Hula Maize (5 wins, 3 at 2, 1000 -1400m, 4 th ACT Black Opal Stakes G2, producer) and Hula Gal , winner at 1000m, dam of Tahitian Star (6 wins to 1400m inc Gold Coast Guineas, 4 th Ipswich Eye Liner Stakes Listed) and Explosive Gal (7 wins 1000-1250m) Third dam Best Behave by Denizen . 3 wins at 2. Dam of 11 named, 9 raced, 6 winners. Half sister to Exceptional Angel, Yallahi (stakes placed), Signet (dam of OREGON SEAL– 9 wins 1200-2100m, won MVRC Tesio Stakes G3 and placed in same, producer) Fourth dam Exception by Kaoru Star a half sister to G1 winner and Champion Australasian sire ZEPHYR BAY. Dam of 8 foals, all raced, 5 winners. Immediate family of GENNAKER (AJC George Main Stakes G1), CELLAR (VATC Ansett Australia Stakes G3), RIVAGE (NJC Penfolds Classic G3, AJC Widden Stakes L, AJC Light Fingers Stakes L, stakes producer) and BIG POPPA PUMP (2 nd VRC Sires Produce Stakes G1) Pedigree Analysis: While this colt has no inbreeding in five generations, his pedigree is an example of intellligent and excellent linebreeding, which has resulted in an intense build up of some prepotent bloodlines and affinities. He is also bred on proven patterns for success. * The MR PROSPECTOR / STAR KINGDOM cross has been extremely successful in Australia. These are prepotent genetics for speed and in particular juvenile speed. In addition, the two lines to super speed sire Bold Ruler carried by our colt create further influence for superior acceleration on the racetrack. The NORTHERN DANCER / STAR KINGDOM cross which he also carries (Northern Dancer x 2 in sire and Star Kingdom x 2 in dam) has been a reliable source of elite gallopers. * Linebreeding to the family of Blue Hen mare FRIZETTE Dubai Destination is bred on the MR PROSPECTOR / SEATTLE SLEW cross which has been oustandingly successful, no doubt largely influenced by the fact that both these great sires share as ancestress the Blue hen mare Myrtlewood , by Blue Larkspur and a grandaughter of FRIZETTE. Hawaiian Queen the dam of our colt is an RF (Rassmussen Factor) individual, being inbred 4m x 5f (sex balanced) to the mare Relance, through her influential son Relko (damsire of Dieu d’Or) and daughter Desirade (dam of the sire Ruling) who are three quarter brother and sister - sired by the Tantieme son Tanerko and by Tantieme himself respectively. Relance is RF bred herself x 2m to the mare Durban, a grand daughter of FRIZETTE and Hawaiian Queen’s sex balanced inbreeding to her creates a strong connection with both Seattle Slew and Mr Prospector. Hawaiian Queen’s third dam Exception carries a sex balanced inbreeding to the sire Tourbillon , another FRIZETTE family member and foaled by Durban , the mare to whom Relance is RF bred.. This potent concentration of family blood is strongly reinforced by Denizen, the second damsire of Hawaiian Queen , a son of the mare Fish Bar by Baldric, whose sixth dam is none other than FRIZETTE, and even more tellingly by Pan, the sire of her fourth dam - - by the Teddy son Atys from a daughter of Tourbillon. Dubai Destination carries Tourbillon’s famous grandson My Babu on his tail female line, creating an influential pattern. Mr Prospector has a line to Durbar, the sire of Durban , via Johnstown in his damsire Nashua, and Johnstown is also the damsire of Baldric, carried by Hawaiian Queen . Still further boosting these affinities is the fact that Hawaiian Queen’s damsire Turf Ruler is a more distant relative – Mr Prospector, Seattle Slew, Baldric, Tourbillon and Turf Ruler all trace in tail female line to the mare Kite. Turf Ruler’s dam Philimedes was sired by Alcimedes , who, like Fairway (sire of Nasrullah’s relative Fair Trial, carried here by Biscay, Forli Lyphard, Fair Copy the damsire of Tanerko and importantly, via a daughter on Dubai Destination’s tail female line) and Pharos (sire of Nearco , the point stallion for the NASRULLAH and NORTHERN DANCER dynasties which are both line breeding subjects here), is from another related branch of the same tribe. Seattle Slew, Mr Prospector and Turf Ruler share many other genetic compatibilities. Both Seattle Slew and Turf Ruler are descendants of Nasrullah’s Bold Ruler male line, and Seattle Slew carries a sex balanced inbreeding to Nasrullah, while Mr Prospector’s dam is by the Nasrullah son Nashua. Seattle Slew, and Mr Prospector’s grandsire Native Dancer both carry Bold Ruler’s relative John P Grier through their dams; Turf Ruler’s second dam is by the sire Bridge Of Earn, a member of this clan and inbred to it on his tail female line, while Hawaiian Queen’s second dam is by the abovementioned sire Denizen, also a family member. Seattle Slew is RF inbred to the mare Baby League through the full sisters Striking and Busher (by War Admiral – Man O War x Sweep/ Sundridge ); Baby League herself is by the Sundridge male line representative Bubbling Over, and is a daughter of the immortal Teddy daughter La Troienne . Mr Prospector’s sire Raise A Native was foaled by a daughter of the Teddy son Case Ace, and he is linebred to Teddy x 3 through that horse and the great sires and full brothers Bull Dog and Sir Gallahad . Raise A Native’s second dam is a daughter of the Man O War son American Flag, while his sire Native Dancer carries multiple lines to Sundridge and to Bold Ruler’s relative Sweep. Mr Prospector’s third dam was sired by the Sundridge male line representative Count Fleet, giving him multiple lines to that horse. The sire Tantieme carried by Turf Ruler and duplicated via Hawaiian Queen’s RF inbreeding to Relance is a representative of the Teddy male line, and her fourth dam Heavenly Wind is by the Teddy line sire Pan, while Habitat ( sire of Denizen who is Hawaiian Queen’s second damsire) was foaled by a daughter of the Bull Dog son Occupy. The influential linebreeding in the subject pedigree continues when we consider: * Inbreeding to the family of Blue Hen mare PADUA Mr Prospector’s sire Raise A Native, Blue Larkspur (carried by Mr Prospector and Seattle Slew on the tail female line through their common ancestress Myrtlewood) and Relic, the sire of Relance are all closely related, sharing as ancestress the mare PADUA. Blue Larkspur is additionally an RF individual, being inbred to her. Hawaiian Queen the dam of our colt, with her RF breeding to Relance, strongly reinforces these genetic affinities. Relic is a son of War Relic (by Man O War – refer Seattle Slew’s RF inbreeding to daughters of War Admiral ) and was foaled by a daughter of Blue Larkspur’s grandsire Black Toney. Blue Larkspur is a son of North Star, by the sire Sunstar who also sired Sundridge, mentioned above as another key influence. Turf Ruler’s damsire Alcimedes carries Sundridge, and Tanerko, carried by Dieu d’Or, another Sunstar son in Buchan (Buchan also appears in RIBOT, a linebreeding subject in this pedigree) The aforementioned sire Pan, who sits in an influential position on the tail female line of Hawaiian Queen, is by Atys (by Teddy’s important son Asterus from a Sunstar daughter).

Original Article The Kano Durbar: Political aesthetics in the bowel of the elephant Wendy Griswolda,* and Muhammed Bhadmusb aDepartment of Sociology, Northwestern University, 1810 Chicago Avenue, Evanston, Illinois 60208, USA. E-mail: [email protected] bDepartment of Theatre and Drama, Bayero University Kano, Kano, Nigeria. E-mail: [email protected] *Corresponding author. Abstract Political aesthetics deploy theatrical techniques to unite performers and audience into a cultural community, thereby distracting from conflicts. The Kano Durbar in northern Nigeria demonstrates how the aesthetics of power can promote a place-based political culture. Although power in Kano rests on a wobbly three-legged stool of traditional, constitutional and religious authority, the status quo celebrated by the Durbar holds back ideological challengers like Boko Haram even as it perpetuates distance from the unified nation-state. The Durbar works as a social drama that helps sustain a Kano-based collective solidarity against the threats of ethnic/religious tensions and Salafist extremism. A cultural-sociological and dramaturgical analysis of the Durbar demonstrates how weak sources of power can support one another when bound together in an aesthetically compelling ritual. American Journal of Cultural Sociology (2013) 1, 125–151. doi:10.1057/ajcs.2012.8 Keywords: political aesthetics; place; social drama; Kano; Nigeria; Durbar Introduction While political rituals are expressions of power, what is less often noticed is that they are expressions of place. Bringing this insight to bear on the analysis of these rituals can reveal how they work, what exactly they accomplish, thereby resolving some of the puzzles they present. This article examines the case of the Kano Durbar, a Nigerian ritual that presents a social drama of and for Kano residents, a drama that helps sustain a sense of r 2013 Macmillan Publishers Ltd.

odern horse racing in Japan had its beginnings in racing events that were organized by foreign residents of Yokohama in 1862. In 1861, when Japan was about to move from the feudal system into the Meiji Restoration, foreign residents living in Yokohama, predominantly British, introduced the first Western-style horse racing by establishing the Yokohama Race Club to Japan. Western style horse racing was held in foreign enclaves, and hence, unfortunately, very little is known or recorded about initial era in Japan’s modern horse racing history. At about the same time that the name of the Japanese central city was changed from Edo to Tokyo, Western-style horse racing began to be found in the major metropolitan cities across the country. In 1906, the government embarked on a policy which tacitly allowed to bet. This led to the introduction of modern horse racing featuring sales of betting tickets in Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka and other metropolitan cities, from which most racing operations benefited. However, this profitable system was short lived; two years later, the government prohibited betting and instituted a system of paying direct subsidies for prize money and other horse racing expenses. During this subsequent period of government-subsidized horse racing, prominent legislators, businessmen, as well as breeders, began active efforts to introduce a horse racing law. Eventually the government began to take proactive position to promote horse racing in order to expand breeding in Japan and to improve quality of the Japanese horses. In 1923, horse racing legislation, so greatly desired by the horse racing industry, was enacted and led to the formation of 11 racing clubs.
