ii Introduction

The May(s) family are first recorded as living in Campsea Ashe in the late 1700s and the family name is a familiar one for many years well into the 20th century. This story of the family has been researched by a member of the Local Heritage Project, Sheila Holmes, and describes the family from the earliest known member, George May who was born in 1877, through to Eva May, his 2nd Great Granddaughter who was born in the village in 1923.

The research is based on information available via the censuses, the Parish Records as well as other published histories of the family (published on www.ancestry.co.uk). The history is, of course, not complete and the author would welcome receiving any additional information about the family, or any amendments where errors have been made.

6 George May b. 1777

This May family came from the Butley/ Sudbourne area of Suffolk. George born 1777 in Orford, close to Butley. He married Mary in 1800 also born in Orford in 1781. There is some confusion over her maiden, being Ianham, Lanham or even Lawrence. George and Mary were married in 1802.

They had eight children at least. The first child John was born in Campsea Ashe, and the next four children were born in Sudbourne, between 1808 and 1817. The youngest three were all born in Campsea Ashe. So it can be assumed that the family moved to Campsea Ashe around 1816.

George and Mary lived the rest of their married lives in Campsea Ashe. Mary died and was buried in Campsea Ashe on 2nd June 1831. George died in 1836 and was buried with his wife on 22nd June.

Children of George and Mary

John May

John was born in 1800 on 6th November in Campsea Ashe and also baptised at the church on 25th January 1801. It seems that at this time they were living in the village. John may have married Rebecca West, who was born in Campsea Ashe in 1802 but this has not been verified. (See separate notes)

Rebecca May

Rebecca, was their first daughter, was born in 1808. No further information about her has been found at the present time.

James May

James was born on 20th January 1809 in Sudbourne and he was baptised there on 17th September 1812. He married Emma Wright who was born in Sudbourne in 1806. James and Emma were living in Campsea Ashe in 1841. James was an agricultural labourer. They had at least two children, Jacob, born in 1847 and Martha, born in 1847 also. They were both born in Campsea Ashe. (See separate page)

It seems from the records, that James and Emma lived in the village for the rest of their lives. Emma died in 1891 and was buried on 24th November, aged 85 and James died in 1884 and was buried on 14th November aged 74.

William May

William, George and Mary’s third son was born on 7th September 1812 was baptised on 27th December 1812 in Sudbourne. He married Sarah Baldrey in Campsea Ashe on 12th January 1835. William and Sarah had four children, all born in Campsea Ashe. The children were Sarah born in 1840, Emma, born in 1843, Martha born in 1845 and William born in 1851.

7 Sarah May died in 1901, and Martha in 1930. It appears that the sisters did not marry and they lived and were buried in Campsea Ashe. (See separate page on William and Sarah)

Isaac May

Isaac was the fourth son born on 20th June 1816 in Sudbourne. He married Mary West, a local girl, born in Campsea Ashe. She may have been the sister of Rebecca whom it is thought married Isaac’s older brother, John. Isaac and Mary were married at Campsea Ashe Church on 3rd November 1840. They had three daughters, Harriet Jane, born in 1841, Catherine, born in 1842 and Anna, born in 1845. Sadly little Anna died just over one year old and was buried on 22nd February 1846. All the children were born the village.

Emma May

Emma was the second daughter of George and Mary. She was born in Campsea Ashe in 1818 and baptised at the church on 13th August of that year. No further information about Emma.

Henry May

Henry was born in 1820 and baptised at Campsea Ashe Church on 5th March 1820. He married Mary York in 1846. Mary died and Henry remarried. His second wife was Ellen Mattin. For the full story of Henry, his children and grandchildren – See separate pages.

Samuel May

Samuel was the last child born to George and Mary. He was born on 14th December 1823. Little Samuel died on 28th December 1825, aged just two years. John May b. 1800 (or 1806?)

John May was born in Butley in 1800. He was the son of George and Mary May. He married Rebecca West who was born in Campsea Ashe in 1802. Her parents were William and Sarah West, nee Fellingham. ( See notes on the West family)

In 1841 census, John, an agricultural labourer, was living in Campsea Ashe with his five children. They were Betsey born in 1831, Jonathan born in 1836, Sarah born in 1838, Maria born in 1839 and Ellen born in 1841. There was no mention of John’s wife, Rebecca.

In 1851, John, aged 45 and Rebecca aged 49, had fallen on hard times as they were on Parish Relief. They were still living in the village and they had five more children. They were George born in 1842 was baptised at Campsea Ashe church on 2nd October of that year, Hannah born in 1847, Harry born in 1847, Mary Anne born in 1848 and Emma born in 1850, all in Campsea Ashe. Betsey has left home but all the other four older children were still with their parents. Jonathan was 15 and working as a farm servant and other children were all attending school according to the census.

It seems that family left the village sometime between 1853 and 1861. Little Emma died in 1853 aged just 4 years and was buried in the churchyard.

8 In 1861, the Census records for Battersea, John May aged 56 was a lodger with his two sons, Jonathan and George and they were all working as railway labourers. Rebecca, John’s wife was living in Ipswich, St. Margarets, aged 59. Their daughter, Mary Ann, was married to John William Clarke and was also living in Ipswich. They were to have five children. Mary Ann died in Ipswich in 1910 at the age of 63.

James May b. 1810

James May was born in Butley in 1810. It seems highly likely that he was the brother of John. (See above)

In 1841, he was living in Campsea Ashe with his wife Emma. Emma was the daughter of Robert and Kinborough Wright from Sudbourne, Suffolk. James was an agricultural labourer.

James and Emma had two children, Jacob born in 1847 and Martha also born in 1847 in Campsea Ashe. By 1851, the family had moved to Mill Lane . James and Emma continued to live in Wickham Market until at least 1871.

James became a farmer of 26 acres employing one man so he did well for himself.

9 William May b. 1812

William was the son of George and Mary and he was born in 1812/ in Sudbourne. He married Sarah, born in 1813 in Campsea Ashe.

In 1841, William and Sarah were living in Campsea Ashe with their daughter Sarah, born 1840. William was an agricultural labourer.

By 1851 they had three more children, Emma, born in 1843, another born in 1845 and a son William born in 1850.

In 1861, William was now 48 as was his wife Sarah. Their daughter Sarah, who would have been 21, nor their other two daughters were living with the family. Their son William was 10.

William died in 1867 in Campsea Ashe, aged 55 years.

Sarah, a widow, married again to Robert Gray on 27th September 1870. Robert Gray, a resident of Campsea Ashe was born in 1799. He was a widower, previously married to Elizabeth Smith, who died on 19th March 1869. Robert and Elizabeth had four children.

Robert Gray died in Campsea Ashe on 23rd May 1875 at the age of 74.

Sarah died on 25th April 1880 in Wickham Market Workhouse, aged 67.

Isaac May b. 1816

Isaac May was born in Sudbourne in 1816. He married Mary West, born in 1821 or 1818 in Campsea Ashe.

Isaac and Mary were living in Campsea Ashe in 1841. Isaac was an agricultural labourer.

10 In 1851, Isaac and Mary were living Hacheston with their daughter Harriet Jane, aged 8 and Catherine 7, both born in Campsea Ashe. Anna, born in 1845, also born in Campsea Ashe, died in February 1846. The family must have moved to Hacheston between 1846 and 1851.

Harriet Jane married Charles Edward Goodson in 1861 in Chelsea (St Luke). They lived in Chelsea with their family of eight children until 1881.

There is no further information about Isaac and Mary except in the census records for Towcester, Northampton which may or may not be the same person. The record states- Isaac May, aged 48, married, lodger and an agricultural worker, born Campishash!

Henry Mays b. 1820

Henry Mays was born in Campsea Ashe in 1820 and was baptised at the village church on 5th March of that year. His father was George Mays, born 1777 in Orford and his mother was Mary, nee Ianham or Lawrence. She was born in 1781 also in Orford, Suffolk.

In the 1841 census, he was a servant for Lewis Fish, a farmer in Campsea Ashe and aged 20.

It appears that he married Mary York , daughter of Charles and Rachel York of Marlesford. They married on 13th October 1846.

Children of Henry and Mary

From one source, it seems that Henry and Mary had a son George, born in 1849, and a daughter Jane also born in 1847 or 9 in Marlesford.

11 Another son, James, was born in 1849.

In the 1851 census, Henry was living with his wife Ellen and living in Hacheston in Ashe Road.

There is no record of a burial of Mary Mays around 1853 at Campsea Ashe.

There is a reference to two children, both boys being born, one named Lewis born 1852, who died at the age of 8 months and buried at Campsea Ashe and a second also called Lewis born 1853. It is believed that they were Henry’s children but more evidence is needed.

Henry and Ellen’s children (Ellen, second wife)

Henry married Ellen Mattin, born in Campsea Ashe in 1832 to Thomas and Mary Mattin, nee Baldrey. ( Thomas 1807-1890 and Mary b. 1802.) Henry and Ellen married in 1854 at Campsea Ashe. The family lived in Hacheston from 1854 to about 1870.

In 1861, Henry aged 40 and his wife Ellen aged 28, 12 years his junior, were living in Ashe Road, Hacheston, with their sons, James born 1850 and Henry born 1856. James was the son of Henry’s first wife, Mary. No mention of George, Jane or Lewis, Henry’s other children from his first marriage.

Henry and Ellen also had two daughters, Mary born 1858 and Lucy just I month old. Henry was an agricultural worker.

By 1871, the family was back living in Campsea Ashe. Henry now recorded as 48! and Ellen 38years old. James, aged 21 and Henry, aged 14 were working as agricultural labourers like their father. Mary was 13 and Lucy 10 years old, were scholars.

Five more children had been born between 1861 and 1871. They were Harriet, born 1862, Emma born 1863, George born 1866, John, born 1868 and Rose born 1870. All these children except Rose, were born in Hacheston.

In 1881, the family was living in Mill Lane, Campsea Ashe. Henry Mays died in 1875 at the age of 56 and was buried in Campsea Ashe churchyard on 10th August.

Ellen married for a second time to William Meadows of Marlesford. William was 35 and Ellen was 48 but she recorded her age as 45 in the census!

In 1911, John Mays, aged 42, was living with Eliza, his wife, aged 35 and their young son John aged 6. Ellen Meadows, mother of John, aged 77, a widow, was also still living with the family.

Children of Henry and Ellen

Henry Mays born 1856

Henry lived with the family in Hacheston until about 1883 when they all moved to Campsea Ashe. He married Mary Ann Moore from Dennington about this time. (See later)

12 Mary Louisa Mays born 1858

Mary Louisa was born in Hacheston in 1858 was the first born to Henry and Ellen. She lived her early life with the family. She appeared to not be good at school and in the School Log Book, it records that she “was removed for bad conduct” in 1871.

By 1881, she was 23 and living in Croydon, Surrey. She married David D. Mays, born Gorleston and they had at least one son, Duncan born 1887. In 1891, she was living in Leatherhead, Surrey and by 1901 she was in Willesden, Middlesex.

Harriet also born in Hacheston in 1862 was baptised at Campsea Ashe on the 27th April the same year. She was the third daughter of Henry and Ellen.

In 1891, Henry and Mary Ann had five children, Mary Louisa, born in 1883, George Henry born in 1885, John born in 1887, William born in 1888 and Harvey born in 1890. They were all born in Campsea Ashe.

By 1901, Henry was married to Sarah, aged 40 and living at 5, Ashe Corner Cottages. Six more children had been born between 1891 and 1901. No details about when Mary Ann died means that it is unknown who their mother was for sure. Mary Ann was most likely to be the children’s mother as there is a burial record for Campsea Ashe of a Mary Mays being buried in 5th May 1900, aged 72. If this correct, then Ephriam, born 1892, Robert born in 1894, Ethel born in 1896, Charles born in 1897, Rosa born in 1898 were all Mary Ann’s children.

Florence born in 1901 and Lily who was born in 1903, both in Campsea Ashe were the children of Sarah.

Children of Henry and Mary Ann

Mary Louisa b. 1883

Mary Louisa, who it is believed, was called Louisa, was born on 2nd April 1883 and batised at thye local church on 14th October the same year. She lived with the family in Campsea Ashe. In 1894, there is a record in the School Log Book in 1894 which stated that Louisa had not made a full week’s attendance for three years. Louisa was not keen on going to school! In 1901, when she would have been 19, she had left home.

George Henry b. 1885

George was born in Campsea Ashe on 10th August 1885 and was baptised at Campsea Ashe Church on 14th June. He was the eldest son of Henry and Mary Ann and lived with the family. In 1891, George was aged 6. According to Campsea Ashe School Log Book, George seemed to always in some sort of trouble. In 1895, he was sent home because his clothes were in a “dreadful state of exposure”. In 1896, he was illegally employed by Mr. Brown, working at Ashmore Hall, aged 11. At the age of 17, George was working as a bricklayer’s labourer. Ten years later he was a labourer on the railway, unmarried and living at home with his stepmother.

John b. 1887

John, born on 28th May 1887 and baptised on 7th July in Campsea Ashe. He lived in the

14 family home and went to the local school. However, John was not too keen on school either. The School Log Book records several entries relating to John. In 1894, at the age of 7, he was caught stealing small items from school. He did not like school and the Attendance Officer called at the family home as John had not been in school for nine weeks. A year later he was punished for truenting. In 1911, John aged 25 and unmarried was working as a railway labourer like his brother, George.

William b. 1888

William was the third son, born on 31st October 1888 in Campsea Ashe and was baptised two months later on the last day of that year. In 1891, William was aged just four. He lived with the family until at least 1911. He was also caught stealing at school with his older brother John. William became a shepherd and appears to be unmarried in 1911.

Henry b. 1890

Henry, another son for Henry and Mary Ann was born on 16th August 1889 in Campsea Ashe. He was baptised on 13th July 1890. He lived with the family at 5, Ashe Corner Cottages. He too was caught stealing in 1897 for which he was caned. In 1911, Henry, or Harvey as he was sometimes called, was living with his step-mother and his siblings. He was a farm labourer. He married May and they two children, Eric Charles, born 7th November 1920 and Eva, born on 28th February 1923.

Ephriam b. 1892

Ephriam was the fifth son of Henry and Mary Ann, born in 1892 in Campsea Ashe. He did not appear to get into any trouble at school. In 1901, he was at home with the rest of the family. By 1911, he had left home. No further information as to his whereabouts.

Robert b. 1894

Robert, the sixth son, was born in 1894 in Campsea Ashe. He went to the local village school. In 1911 he was still living at home aged 17. He was a farm labourer.

Charles, born 1897 in Campsea Ashe was Henry and Mary Ann’s seventh son. He grew up in the family home and went to the local school. In the 1911 census, no trace of him can be found at the present time. He would have been just 14.

Rosa b. 1898

15 There is little information about Rosa except that she was born and baptised in Campsea Ashe in 1898 and was living with the family in 1901. By 1911, she may have left home as she was not on the census. She would have been only 13.

Children of Henry and Sarah

Florence b. 1901

Florence was the daughter of Henry and Sarah, born 1901. She was baptised on 10th July, aged 3. Florence was living with her mother, sister and step-brothers at Ashe Corner Cottages in 1911. She was aged 10.

Lily b. 1903.

Lily was Henry’s last child, born in 1903. She was also baptised on the same day as her sister Florence. She was living with her mother in 1911, aged 8.

Henry died between 1903 and 1911.

The family seems went through some hard times and at times had very little money. There were 12 children in the family which must have been a drain on the their resources. According to the School Log Book, the Mays children came to school without their lunches and scrounged from the younger children around 1894. They clearly did not have enough money to clothe the children properly. They had a large family and it seems that the children would have to work in the fields to get little extra cash.

The project is being developed by a small group of local enthusiasts, but we welcome the involvement of anyone interested in their heritage. Whether you want to look at the resources first hand, or to undertake some research for yhourself, we welcome your involvement. Contact Tim or Sheila on 01728 747995.
