ANNUAL REPORT 2008 - 2009

Newark is our home. Education is our work. The World is our future. Newark is our home. Education is our work. The World is our future. ANNUAL REPORT

Message from the Board

Dear friends,

For 40 years Link Community School has delivered a high quality educational experience, inspiration and results. As the statistics in this report show, the 2008- 2009 school year was no exception. Link’s outstanding administrative team, faculty and staff never cease in their work to deliver an excellent academic program that prepares our students for lifelong success.

In striving to reach impressive results, accountability is always emphasized at Link. The Board of Trustees is accountable for ensuring the long-term stability of the school; the faculty and staff are accountable for delivering an exceptional education to our children; the students are accountable for working hard at their studies. The entire community is accountable for adhering to the core values of the school and for being true to the mission of Link. This Annual Report shows the results of that culture of accountability.

Looking back on our measurable success, it is safe to say that we are proud of Link’s history of accomplishments. But even as we reflect on past success, we look forward to the future with enthusiasm and energy. Leadership is on the forefront of our minds, and a Search Committee has been formed and is actively working towards determining the next leader of the school. The Board of Trustees is preparing to kick off an ambitious capital campaign. One of the goals of the campaign is to fund a new home for Link, enabling us to grow the programs and opportunities offered to our students.

One thing that continues to amaze and energize the board and the staff is that even in these challenging economical times, Link’s vision and proven track record continue to attract new supporters and partners. We have the utmost gratitude for your support of Link’s mission, and look forward to continue to work together as we meet the challenges ahead.

Sincerely, on behalf of the Link Board of Trustees,

Wendy Lacey, Chair

1 ANNUAL REPORT

Message from the Interim Head of School

Dear friends,

Above all Link is a community, a place where many— trustees, teachers, staff, students, parents, supporters, and partners - come together to support a vital mission. This community breaths life to the school’s mission by devoting its talent, time and resources. And in return this community’s investments yield incredible dividends—huge academic gains, tremendous personal growth, impressive scholarship and financial aid awards, placement in top schools and summer programs, exposure to enriching experiences.

While these dividends are apparent now, we know that there is much more to come - for among our students is the doctor who will make a breakthrough in the treatment of autism, the engineer who will repair a failing bridge, the environmentalist who will nurture our Earth, the urban planner who will create green space; the entrepreneur who will revitalize a neighborhood; the dancer who will share her passion on a world stage, the educator who will demand his students’ very best, the father who will read to his child, the president who will lead her nation.

Although we always focus our attention on our students, it is important to note that Link impacts the entire community. Families are nurtured, supporters are inspired, and teachers learn perhaps more than their students.

This annual report captures this special community that is Link. Specifically, it recognizes the efforts and the rewards of this past school year. Without you, Link wouldn’t exist. Thank you for sustaining, inspiring and supporting!

Regards,

Maria Pilar Paradiso Interim Head of School

WAYS TO GIVE TO LINK COMMUNITY SCHOOL

Link appreciates the support of all donors at all levels of giving and offers a variety of gift options that provide donors with maximum convenience and flexibility.

New: DONATE online at www.linkschool.org

Cash: Writing a check or making a gift via credit card is a simple and direct way to contribute.

Securities: A gift of appreciated securities may provide tax benefits, including an income tax deduction and a reduction in capital gains tax liability.

Corporate Matching Gifts: A company or foundation that matches gifts to non-profit organizations can often double or triple your contribution. Corporate matching forms can usually be obtained from your company’s Philanthropy or Matching Gift Program office and sent to Link for completion.

Gifts-in-Kind: Link is grateful for donations of goods and services that can benefit the school. Periodically, the staff identifies items for a “wish list", which can be found in our quarterly newsletter,Link to You.

Gift of Time: Volunteers may have time, a talent, or a professional skill that could benefit Link and would be greatly appreciated by the school community. Tutors and mentors are especially needed.

Sponsor a Student: An individual, group, company, church or organization can sponsor the Link education of an individual student. Sponsorship may be for one or two years, and can be made through a flexible installment payment option or as an annual gift.
