0 members are decedents of Aboriginal Peoples who lived in the present day Area. 0 The Squamish Nation have occupied and governed their territory since before recorded history 0 The total area of Squamish Nation Traditional Territory Lands is 6,732 sq. km. 0 On July 23"’,1923, Sixteen (16) Squamish speaking tribes decided to amalgamate to form one Nation called the Squamish Indian Band (legal name). 0 Hence, we have 16 Hereditary Chiefs and 16 elected Councilors. 0 Today the Nation consists of 24 reserves spread among nine communities stretching from to the northern area of . 0 Membership is determined by marriage and birthright, which is governed by membership rules. 0 There are over 3,502 Squamish Nation members (and growing) and more than 1,941 members live on our 24 reserves. 0 Members reside in 481 homes on reserves from North Vancouver to Squamish. Squamish Nation builds 16 houses per year for membership. 0 Chief & Council consist of 16 elected members, originating from the Amalgamation of 16 villages. Their term is 4 years, presently from December 3, 2005 to December 4, 2009. 0 The Band Manager is elected for 4 years, working in collaboration with Chief & Council. This is the first full 4 year term, used to be 2 year terms. 0 Our language is from the Salishan dialect and is called Sk_xw1’1mishSnichem , pronounced “Sk-wo-mish Snay—chem”(SquamishLanguage). 0 Our society is, and always has been, organized, sophisticated, with complex laws and rules governing all forms of social relations, economic rights and relations with other First Nations. St. Paul’s Catholic Church located on the Mission I.R. #1 and is the oldest church in B.C. It was built in 1886. Community service facilities include: 0 Main Administration Offices in North Vancouver and Squamish 0 Departments include: Lands & Resource, Social Development, Project Negotiation & Development, So-Sa—LatchHealth & Family Centre, Business Revenue & Services, Community Operations, Eslha7an Learning Centre, Stitsma Employment Centre, Recreation Centre, Youth Centre, Elders Centre, Housing & Public Works, and the Nursery/Pre-School Businesses include: Mosquito Creek Marina, Gas Bar at Superstore, Smoke Shop and future opportunities. Traditional Centres include: two long houses Economic Development opportunities thrive through leases, joint ventures & Nation owned businesses. . Some of the Nation’s 70+ leases & permits include the Park Royal Shopping Centre, International Plaza, Capilano RV Park, Greater Vancouver Sewage Plant, and Superstore. Squamish is well renowned in generating revenue through leasing for many decades. Squamish Nation will seek a resolution for the long outstanding claim to their traditional territories. Squamish Nation’s Statement of Intent to negotiate was accepted by the Treaty Commission on December 1993. Our Self Government, under the mandate of the membership, the Squamish Nation Chief & Council works to protect and enhance the quality of life for the membership. The Council administers many programs, services, economic development, joint ventures, among many others. Chief & Council consists of 16 leaders originating from the Amalgamation of 16 villages. Their term is 4 years, presently from December 3, 2005 to December 4, 2009. They are elected through membership vote. We have over 800 members participating in some form of education, from Nursery school to Post Secondary Institutions. Water Supply includes 10 wells, City Connection to North & West Vancouver. Sewage Disposal; 23 septic tanks, connection to North & West Vancouver. Transportation; accessible by 8 roads, both gravel and paved. In September 2002, IR #6 (10.7 acres) was returned to Squamish with a 92.5 million dollar settlement (proceeds are administered by a Trust). Stan Joseph Jr. created the Thunderbird logo for Squamish Nation in 1981. The Thunderbird is one of the special messengers of the Creator. The tail feathers represent past, present and future; in the talons is the face of a lizard, representing spiritual protection for all Squamish Nation people.
