“All governments lie,” cried iconoclastic rebel journalist I.F. Stone who from 1953 to 1971, filled a tiny 4-page newsletter with his fearless, independent reporting and carried it to the mailbox every week. Inspired by Stone, a award-winning journalists such as Jeremy Scahill, Glenn Greenwald, Michael Moore, and Amy Goodman continue to expose government lies and corporate deception. In the hilarious comedy that many consider the high point of his silent filmography, W.C. Fields plays Elmer Prettywillie, a misanthropic, small-town pharmacist whose lovely shop assistant (Louise Brooks) gets him involved in a phony real estate scheme. Prettywillie suffers the endless abuse of petty customers, overbearing relatives, obnoxious children, and offensive objects in his quest for peace and quiet. The story was later revised and revamped in the talkies The Pharmacist (1933) and It’s a Gift (1934). (US, 1926, 77 min., Silent with English subtitles, 35mm print from the Library of Congress | Dir. A. Edward Sutherland) Ben Model is one of America’s leading silent film accompanists, and has been playing piano and organ for silent films at the New York MoMA since 1984, and the CAC since 2006. Wim Wenders’ IM LAUF DER ZEIT KINGS OF THE ROAD Sunday, June 25 | Outdoor garden reception 2:30 pm, Film 3 pm Members $11 | Public $16

Wim Wenders capped his “Road Movie trilogy” with what may be the all-time greatest road movie, the unanimous winner of the FIPRESCI Prize at the 1976 Cannes Film Festival. A roving film projector repairman (Rüdiger Vogler) saves the life of a depressed psychologist (Hanns Zischler) who has driven his Volkswagen into a river, and they end up on the road together, traveling from one rural German movie theater to another. Along the way, the two men, each running from his past, bond over their shared loneliness. Kings of the Road, captured in gorgeous compositions by cinematographer Robby Müller and dedicated to Fritz Lang, is a love letter to the cinema, a moving and funny tale of male friendship, and a portrait of a country still haunted by war. (West Germany, 1976, 175 min., PG, German with English subtitles, Black & White | Dir. Wim Wenders) Join us for a celebration of Cinema Co-Founder Vic Skolnick, featuring a screening of one of his favorite films. Wim Wenders’ poetic tale about a roving film projector repairman and a suicidal psychologist who end up traveling from one rural German movie theater to another is a love letter to the cinema, a moving and funny tale of male friendship, and a portrait of a country still haunted by war.

Robert Mitchum and Gregory Peck in CAPE FEAR In 35mm print! Monday, June 26 at 7:30 pm Members $11 | Public $16 | Includes reception

Lee J. Thompson’s 1962 adaptation of John D. MacDonald’s The Executioners, is one of the great masterpieces of terror and suspense. In the annals of screen villains, few top Robert Mitchum’s Max Cady. Released after serving a 6-year prison sentence for committing a sadistic sex crime, Cady is waiting until he can take revenge on the prosecutor who put him away (Gregory Peck) – by targeting his wife and young daughter. Everything about Cady exudes menace, from his hooded eyes and sexual swagger to his undisguised contempt for everyone he meets. A classic Bernard Herrmann score drives this relentless and brilliant thriller, which was remade by Martin Scorsese in 1991. (US, 1962, 105 min., English, PG-13 | Dir. J. Lee Thompson) Foster Hirsch, Professor at Brooklyn College, is a pioneer in the development of Film Studies and author of more than a score of important books ranging from works about Woody Allen, the Actors Studio and American theater to his magisterial biography, Otto Preminger: The Man Who Would Be King. His current work-in-progress is a sprawling study of film during the crucial transition period of the 1950s. Gregory Peck is an ordinary family man terrorized by psychotic ex-con Robert Mitchum in this masterpiece of terror and suspense

In Frederico Fellini’s quirky, imaginative fable, a motley crew of European aristocrats (and a lovesick rhinoceros!) board a luxurious ocean liner on the eve of World War I to scatter the ashes of a beloved diva (Janet Suzman). Fabricated entirely in Rome’s famed Cinecittà studios, And the Ship Sails On (E la nave va) reaches spectacular new visual heights with its stylized re-creation of a decadent bygone era. Eckert has been presenting films throughout Long Island for 12 years. She previously taught social studies and psychology at Northport High School for 35 years. Master filmmaker Federico Fellini’s imaginative fable about a motley crew of European aristocrats (and a lovesick rhinoceros!) aboard a luxurious ocean liner on the eve of World War I reaches spectacular new visual heights with its stylized re-creation of a decadent bygone era 16 SPIRITUALITY hosted by FRED CRADEN SACRED Thursday, June 29 at 7:30 pm Members $7 | Public $12

Directed by Academy Award winner Thomas Lennon and shot around the globe by more than 40 filmmaking teams in more than 25 countries, Sacred immerses the viewer in an exploration of spirituality across cultures and religions, in the daily use of faith and spiritual practice. At a time when religious hatreds dominate the world’s headlines, this film explores faith as primary human experience, and how people turn to ritual and prayer to navigate the milestones and crises of private life. The film, sweeping in its global reach, yet intensely intimate, is a tour de force, told without narration, without experts and, for long stretches, without words at all. From a Buddhist monk’s 1,000-day circumnavigation of a mountain in Japan, and Hasidic Jews’ ecstatic celebrations in Uman, to Angola Prison inmates finding God, and Malagasy turning of the bones to commemorate their dead, this breathtaking film is at once deeply personal yet universally human. (USA/Botswana/Canada/China/Egypt/Ethiopia/France/Haiti/India/Israel/Japan/ Kenya/Lebanon/Madagascar/Myanmar/Nepal/Netherlands/Pakistan/Peru/Philippines/Poland/Russia/Saudi Arabia/Sierra Leone/Spain/Ukraine, 2016, 87 min., R, Several Languages with English subtitles | Dir. Thomas Lennon) More than 40 filmmakers travelled the globe to witness religious celebrations and interview diverse people for this profound exploration of spirituality across cultures and religions.

TEXAS CHAIN SAW MASSACRE (1974) On what seemed like a perfect day in August, 1973, five teenagers went for a drive. They were headed for a nightmare. In a ghoulish house, littered with remains of dead animals, waited a family of maniacal killers.
