We are thrilled to welcome Marilyn Education Price back to Akron. She was last here in Program February of 2016. Marilyn Price is a nationally known puppeteer and storyteller who has been using puppets "to sell Judaism through stories to everybody, even those who don't yet care" for over twenty years. Because, as she says, "I love being Jewish and I value Judaism's lessons." Marilyn's uniquely hand-crafted characters convey enthusiasm for the joy of Jewish living to all of her audiences both young and less-young. She does a wide variety of programs for all sorts of audiences (Jewish and not) and Jewish puppetry is not her major business, but it is that with which she is most closely connected. Over the years Marilyn and her puppets have traveled to every corner of the using original scripts based on Bible, the and Hasidic tales. Her choice of materials - she makes all her puppets – reflects her impish sense of humor as nerf balls, feather dusters, toilet paper tubes and baby sleepers come to life with her touch. Among her Jewish creations are the talking latke (potato pancake) and a unique ensemble of other handcrafted characters that help to make up her Punch and Judaism program, a collection of stories centered on Jewish heritage and values, adaptable for all audiences. Marilyn will be spending Friday at the Shaw JCC Preschool and the Lippman School; on Friday night she will be with us for Beth El's Young Family Shabbat that is sponsored by Lippman Kanfer Family Foundation.

Rabbi, from page 1 Shabbat Shalom

Secondly, we recognize that "Jewish" is not just an adjective -- it's a Bereavement verb. This is something you can hear from any movement around Akron, whether it's Rabbi Moshe's encouragements to do new mitzvot, Rabbi Group Brown's Jewish language around social action, Rabbi Elyssa's novel approaches to spirituality or Hazzan Matt's opportunities for Jewish study. All of us, not unlike Hillels and other Jewish organizations, are trying to create opportunities to "do Jewish." So how do we recognize the full parenthood and marriage of those in our community, while still encouraging, celebrating, and growing Jewish This is a monthly grief support life? group for adults who have experienced the death of a loved Conservative have been in experiment mode, particularly in one. Lex comes as a particularly skilled partner for this, as he is not only a Beth El certificate holder in Interfaith Family Jewish Engagement (from Hebrew Live Streaming College, Rabbi Elyssa's alma mater), but he also has a non-Jewish spouse himself. We want to have some focus groups of our families and be able to come out of this weekend with helpful actions and a renewed sense of mission. Please come join Lex at our musical Lev Tahor service on May 10; hear him give the sermon on May 11; have a great Mother's Day on May 12, and then join our evening panel with Lex on Monday, May 13 at 7:00 PM. President, from page 1 that you as members have a right, and we as a board and executive board, have an obligation to transparency. After all this is YOUR synagogue. It is important that information about Beth El finances and related decisions are shared with you, the membership: As our membership remains at the same levels at best, the financial burdens are shared by fewer and fewer. We have many less full paying members than we have had in the last decade or two. We are ultimately critically dependent on dues payments being honored and most reliant on the recent successful Raffle and other fund raisers we can muster. We all know there is “competition” for Jewish charitable dollars in a shrinking Akron Jewish population. So, when we budget for programming and services for Beth El, it is critical that we collect the actual dues projected and billed. The lack of collection of those dues makes the hard work the budget team has done become out of balance. We program based on expected revenues during the year. This in turn, puts more pressure on our endowed funds, which we have an obligation to protect, not diminish through shortfalls. Other expenses continue to increase. What has not increased over the last 15-25 years? You should be aware that this past year, we took the first dues increase in at least a DECADE at Beth El. We also hope it is obvious that we took on larger salaries for our new clergy as it had been 12 years since we had to make a change in that area. As such, we have decided to strictly enforce the definition in our Bylaws of Member in Good Standing at Beth El. If dues are more than one year in arrears and the member does not communicate and act on a plan to become current and make that effort consistently to become current, it is not fair for the balance of the membership to support budgets and programs based on an undelivered promise to pay. Debts will not be sent to collection, but membership needs to be terminated. Burial at Rose Hill Cemetery, along with services provided by Beth El clergy, are only available for members in good standing. A fee will be imposed in order to provide professional services by Beth El clergy for members who do not maintain membership in good standing. That fee is intended to offset the lack of dues payment by that member not in good standing. We would like to believe that as a member you have an expectation of entitlement to various Beth El services. , Jewish Socialization, Holiday and Ritual participation, Life Cycle events, Pastoral attention and care are some of the reasons we belong to Beth El. However, as Moses has taught us, there must be ACCOUNTABILITY for our actions, no matter the trust others have invested in us. If you do not agree with the above, please let me know. I am most available to discuss with you in person, by phone or email. As demographics continue to trend as they do, and wage earners continue to retire on fixed incomes, we will have really challenging decisions to make about Beth El. Supporters who have historically paid full dues cannot continue at that level. Others have challenges continuing at any level. We need to come to a consensus on this topic and plan accordingly. Financial discipline at Beth El is paramount. Our job is to continue to provide a broad range of services per above. Our goal continues to expand membership and provide a broad range of programs. It is unfair to expect a core of fewer members to carry a disproportionate burden unless they intentionally step up and do so. Some of our legacy members have done that in deeds and gifts. The objective is to be transparent and identify short-term and long-term challenges moving forward. If the importance of the future of a Conservative synagogue in Akron remains an important goal, and you have constructive ideas to help us move forward, please let those thoughts be known. This is your congregation. My job is to provide the services we as members have identified as important priority. We will deliver those services during the balance of my term as President. However, as we look forward, we need to decide collectively what is most important to Beth El and how this Synagogue will look in the future. Thanks for your interest and thoughts.
