The enigmatic Cass McCombs is something of an indie-rock heartthrob. The crooner first gained notice in the early years of the new century, releasing critically acclaimed records and touring with the likes of , Blonde Redhead, The National, and . Wit’s End is end result of two years recording in various homes and studios in California, New York, New Jersey and Chicago. It was produced by Cass with , with whom he also created Catacombs . According to the press materials, “Sounds that conjure the colors purple and black, this is his darkest record to date. It seems he is going deeper into the mania of a man buried alive inside his self-made Catacombs, banging the stone walls, crying to be let out, and enjoying the quiet away from the outside world. However, he is not a man afraid of his own shadow, for in this environment of complete darkness, no shadows can be cast. This is a world of total Feeling. Here, words become a catalyst away from the slavery of arbitrary Thought and toward Feeling.” The entire album is streaming on The Guardian UK website (http://www.guardian.co.uk/music/musicblog/2011/apr/12/cass-mccombs-wits-end-album-stream ).

Sleepy Very Sleepy began as a collaboration between songwriters Stephen Konrads and Katie Von Schleicher in 2009. It has since become a four person effort, gaining momentum through an impressive live show and word of mouth. Unlimited Circulation , due out in May 2011, was produced by the band and Elio DeLuca at The Soul Shop in Medford, Mass. (Titus Andronicus, Hallelujah the Hills, Faces on Film). From the sub-harmonic rumbling and dreamlike lyricism of the opening track "Good Darkness" to the hard hitting, maddening caterwaul of the gospel-tinged "Only Us Know", the album follows a dynamic arc of tension and release. Though it straddles the line between genres, the record is held together by an emotional authenticity and clarity of statement.

Brendan Little and Brion Regan of local band The Painted Lights open.
