    www.wotr.org Experiences from the grassroots Wankute: of People, Partnerships and Perseverence anuary 15, 2011 was an unusual day for Wankute. To begin with, they were dealing with a city-like traffic situation. Their streets were more used to cycles, motorcycles Jand the occasional tractor, but today cars were lined up in every available open space. The white lines along the roads indicated an imminent arrival of an eminent person. The village kitchen was buzzing with activity; preparations were being made to feed a 1000 people. The colourful pandal flapped in the chilly January breeze, but you could barely hear its cheerful flutter over that loud speaker playing music that would eventually carry Watershed Voices across the hills and valleys of the Western Ghats. Today Wankute was celebrating. It was one of the few villages that had received an award - the JSW-TOI Earth Care Awards, an acknowledgement of all the hard work that had gone into making it a example of community led mitigation and adaptation to Climate Change. It was a happy day for WOTR too, as along with the village, WOTR was being commended and recognized for the 5 long years of committed and focused effort. Wankute had also received the Nirmal Gram Puraskar for Sanitation, an award acknowledging the cleanliness in this village, free from open defecation and overflowing sewage. But, Wankute was not always so. The Village Wankute, settled at the foothills of the Sahyadri in Western Maharashtra, was, like many of the villages around, teetering on the edge of disaster – riddled with poverty and rife with politics.

    Adapted,Distorted,Subordnated: Folk Art and Cinema (With reference to Marathi folk and cinema) Folk arts, in Indian cultural context, have reformed the society in beliefs and educated them in respect of ritualistic, traditional and religious cultural values. It is part of people’s life and the society knows the reason, causes and occasion to perform and watch it. The name itself is self explanatory, it is actually a democratic process, known to the people, performed by the people for enlightening and educating the generations. It is not having a specific format as it is an orature rather than literature. Historically, the folk art has exerted resistance against the hegemony. These ruling and powerful forces know the means and modes to captivate the psyche of the large society. Folk arts try to locate such elements and semiotics of it and have a major role to play in creating social, political awareness amongst the mass which is mostly uneducated in Indian context. From the tradition of orature, it has developed the audience and its receptivity which has been properly communicated by the artist which includes musicians, singers, writers and even performers. The question of space for performance is not the part of its existence as Kapila Vatsyayan has written about the Lavani and Tamasa ‘ the performance of Tamasa can be held anywhere in the village square, the courtyard of a house, an open field or on a proscenium stage.’ (2005, 168) The linguistic and paralinguistic signals have been developed very sincerely amongst the performer and audience. Even the performance carries, to use Abraham Moles term ‘multiple messages’ in which several channels or several modes of using a channel communication, are used simultaneously in an aesthetic or perpetual synthesis.

This tourism organization played a role of catalysts in promoting tourism in India. With the passage of time different types of tourism emerged in India. Today many famous destinations in India have reached to the maturity stage of their life cycle. Now tourists are more knowledgeable and choosy in their selection for holidays, in terms of places they want to visit and activities which the want to undertake. This change in the pattern of travel and activities can be due to the fact that these places and activities are featured through films. Hence in other words we can say that it is a new form tourism which is known as cinema tourism. The cinema tourism still obtains minute attention both from practitioners and academia because of less knowledge about the cinema tourism and its benefits on tourism. Recent studies advocate that cinema tourism can have great impact on the tourism in making decision for their travel and so long-term success to the destination. I went into this interview fully intending to focus on the latter, but soon found out that it was not left to me to decide! “I’ve always wanted to be a musician”, declares Mano Murthy with no hesita- tion whatsoever. And this was very apparent as the interview progressed – all my questions related to his technical achievements would somehow wind up in music related discussions! But as you will find out, both aspects of his life are equally interesting and inspiring. As a child he would be glued to the radio, immersed in those immortal melo- dies created by SD Burman, RD Burman, Madan Mohan and all the other greats. “Radio Ceylon was on most of the time”, he reminisces, “Vividh Bharthi would be on air for a couple of hours a day at most”. So he grew up with old Hindi film songs for the most part, but also immensely enjoyed the Classical Music played during the annual Ram Navami Concerts held at the Sheshadripuram College Auditorium. Growing up in the 1970’s he could not have missed out on Beatlemania, and likes most of the ’70s bands ranging from ABBA to Santana. He did catch some old Kannada songs too, when he could, but they were not as widely played then.
