Congratulations to the 2011 Bookbuilders West Book Show award winners. Year after year our publishing community demonstrates excellence in design, production, and manufacturing and it is a pleasure to recognize those achievements at the annual Bookbuild- ers West Book Show.

This year we introduced the category of eBooks to the show. This was uncharted territory for a us and we had a lot of fun talking through how this category would be judged and displayed. As this market grows, Andrea Helmbolt we hope to see more eBook submissions in the years ahead.

Continuing our mission to foster community and promote education for publishing professionals, Bookbuilders West hosted four events this year. In March, Mike Johnson produced the annual Crash Course in which those new to the industry learn the basics of book production and manufacturing.

In June, Mike O’Brien and Louis Miller organized the judging for and celebration of the Bookbuilders West Student Scholarship

President’s Message 5 Distinguished The 2011 Distinguished Service Award is presented to Service Award

I am very honored to be the recipient of the Distinguished Service Award this year. It marks a time of my life that I will always cherish and remember fondly. I can sincerely say I have met the most wonderful people through Bookbuilders West. I joined for the networking opportunities but I experienced so much more than that. The people I have encountered and the colleagues I have met in the industry through Bookbuilders West have become great friends and have helped me grow and succeed in my career.

I first joined Bookbuilders West as a volunteer when I was working at my first job in printing with Tien Wah Press. My sales manager at the time, Kathy Kueneman, advised that I should be involved in my industry and suggested joining Bookbuilders West, so I showed up at a Book Show in the mid 1990s asking if they needed any help and if I could volunteer at the next Book Show. From there history

Elise Gochberg was made: I ended up on the Education Committee for three to four years and spent the majority of those years organizing events. At one point, we had to move our monthly meetings from Fort Mason to another venue but we had nothing lined up, so we decided to move the meetings around and see what that would bring in the way of diversity and interest from our members. And, because it was time to switch things up a bit, we added a few social events. We did happy hour at Moma’s, and a pool party at Jillian’s, as well as educational events at the San Francisco Yacht Club, to name a few standouts. “It was our passion to change the course of the We actively tried to attract new members and generate a renewed organization and prepare it for a new generation.” sense of excitement in the organization. Subsection Title 17 Gerilyn Attebery is a California native and graduated from California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, with a BS in Graphic Communications. A highlight of her college career was winning the prestigious Bookbuilders West Scholarship for book design. Her winning project featured a handmade, wooden cover edition of Ambrose Bierce’s The Devil’s Dictionary. During this project, Gerilyn realized her career would include a lifetime of working with books.

In 2001, Gerilyn began her career with Lonely Planet, one of the world’s largest travel publishers, where she was able to meld two of her loves: travel and design. She has worked in Melbourne, Aus- tralia as senior designer and is currently Lonely Planet’s U.S. design manager in their California office. She works as part of the global design team on a range of design projects across departments with a focus on projects for local publishing, sales and marketing, and Gerilyn with her “pet rock,” Uluru. client solutions. This includes the resourcing and coordination of external freelance designers and all print buying. Clients include Counterpoint Press, Polipoint breadth of work from designers and Press and Seal Press. Samples of her work can be seen at publishers.” www.atteberydesign.com.

18 the jury Leslie Austin began her publishing career in 1985 with Mitchell Publishing, an independent textbook publisher in Santa Cruz. Mitchell Publishing was acquired by Random House, whose college division was later absorbed by McGraw-Hill. During this time (1985–1994), Leslie wore many hats: accounting, inventory control, subscription circulation, editorial, and production.

In 1994, Leslie left her position as production supervisor at McGraw- Hill to join Papier-Mâché Press, an independent trade publisher, as production manager, and then as marketing and sales manager before departing in 1998 to serve as president of Bookbuilders West—a full-time job when the membership topped 300.

In 2000, determined to spend time with her children, Leslie began freelancing as a production editor and supervisor for publishing and software clients, including Benjamin Cummings, Scott Jones, SNIA, Southwestern, and Veritas. She continued freelancing for the next decade.

In May 2010, Leslie joined National Geographic Learning (pre K–12) in Monterey, California, as production manager, where she continues her dedication to publishing, producing high-quality publications and advancing professionalism in our industry.

“It’s been said that taste is nothing if not individual, and while it’s true that we, as judges, brought individual points of view to the evaluation of so many wonderful books, we also collaborated effectively to select the books we felt were extraordinary . . . and there were many.”

the jury 19 Lisa Brazieal is a production editor at Peachpit Press, a division of Pearson Education. She has worked in the publishing industry for over 20 years, including an eight-year stint at Macworld magazine. She eventually landed at Peachpit in 1998, where she’s been enjoying the challenging and rewarding work as a production editor ever since.

In life away from work, she is an avid motorcyclist, and on the occasional weekend, wears the hat (or helmet) as a rider coach for the California Motorcyclist Safety Program, teaching students how to ride.

She lives in Point Richmond, California.

20 the jury Michael Farmer is the creative director for National Geographic Learning, in Monterey, California, where he has worked since 2006. Prior to joining National Geographic, Michael worked for Pearson Education in Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, and with Disney Publishing in . Michael began his publishing career with Harcourt Brace Jovanovich College Publishers in San Diego, California, in 1982, and went on to work at Harcourt Trade Publishers in San Diego from 1984 through 2002 where he was vice president of design and production for adult and children’s books. During his tenure with Harcourt Trade, Michael was also a consulting art director with Harcourt School Publishers, Orlando, Florida, where he worked on the design and art direction of Reading and Language Arts programs.

Michael studied graphic design at California College of Arts and Crafts in Oakland, California, and Graphic Communications at California Polytechnic State University, San Luis Obispo, California.

Michael’s work in publishing has included awards for art direction and book design from AIGA, Bookbuilders West, Communications Arts Magazine, The New York Book Show, Print Magazine, and the Society of Illustrators, New York.

“It was personally noteworthy for me to have been invited to participate in judging the show by Bill Ralph—the same Bill Ralph who presented me with a Bookbuilders scholarship so many years ago while a student at Cal Poly.”

the jury 21 Diane Lee attended California College of the Arts and received her BFA in Illustration at the Academy of Art, mostly in a futile attempt to avoid math. She never grew up thinking “I want to be in book produc- tion in a nonprofit world headed by a legendary figure in California publishing.” Celebrating over eight years as Heyday’s production director, she’s still amazed at the twists and turns that she—a world traveler looking for meaning in life—finds herself in a place, literally and figuratively, that answers that question. Surrounded by writers and artists passionate about their field and being a collaborative partner in helping to realize their dreams has been more meaningful and fulfilling than anything she could have imagined. Ironically, though she works in publishing, she is one of the rare individuals in the world not interested in writing The Great American Novel.

22 the jury Elise Gochberg has been doubly honored this year by being the recipient of our Distinguished Service award and by being selected as a juror for this year’s Book Show.

Elise has been a Bookbuilders activist since attending her first Book Show in the mid 1990s. What looked like an opportunity to network with clients turned into more than 15 years of participation on committees including from Education, Program, and Book Show. She has been a member of Bookbuilders board of directors and served as president from 2005 to 2007.

Her printing experience includes sales representation for several well-respected printing firms and, as she says, “I still feel like putting ink on paper is one of the greatest jobs in the world. We get to take someone’s concept and make it into a tangible product that you can hold, feel, smell, and that tells stories that can transform you.”

When not working or volunteering her time, Elise likes to hike with friends in Peru. Elise (and friends) at Machu Picchu

“I still feel like putting ink on paper is one of the greatest jobs in the world.”

the jury 23 “The lively roundtable discussions brought up multiple Q & A sessions between printers, production editors, and designers. It was an incredible learning experience.”

Terri Saul is the production editor at Parallax Press. Founded in 1986, Parallax Press, the publishing division of the Unified Buddhist Church, Inc., has been publishing books on mindfulness in everyday life for 25 years. Authors include Thich Nhat Hanh, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, Joanna Macy, Norman Fischer, Gail Silver, and others. Thich Nhat Hanh is one of the best-known Zen Buddhist teachers in the world today, and Parallax is his core publisher. Parallax’s small, dedicated staff makes mindfulness teachings available and accessible to everyone, while creating a workplace that mirrors the ideals of mindfulness and interbeing found within their books.

A Berkeley resident and UC Berkeley graduate, Terri has worked in editing, marketing, design, and distribution. Beginning her publish- ing career at Publishers Group West, after working in both a library and a bookstore, she moved from data processing to quality control and sales, later becoming the marketing assistant and art-traffic manager for over 500 publisher clients.

Parallax has warmly welcomed Terri into the editorial department as a production editor. Her favorite tasks include working with printers, art directing cover designs, color-correcting children’s book illustra- tions, managing freelancers, working directly on manuscripts, and fashioning and reporting on eBooks and reprints.

Her creative pursuits include art and writing. She has covered “I was thrilled to to participate as a judge transportation, style, and film for blogs, magazines, and news- for the show. I’ll never forget the wide papers, such as Momentum Magazine and the San Francisco variety of approaches to building books. Chronicle. An exhibiting artist, her artwork can be seen on her Thank you, Bookbuilders!” website: www.terrisaul.com.

24 the jury “It is great to see that the art and craft of publishing books is still going strong. What a pleasure to be a Bookbuilders West judge of such fine-quality pieces.”

Tona Pearce Myers has worked in the publishing and book industry for more than 17 years and has been the production director at New World Library for the last 14 years. She spearheaded many of the green initiatives for the company to help make them a leader in this field. Myers holds a bachelor’s degree in creative writing from Sonoma State University, is a graphic designer, and is a published poet. She has contributed articles to such publications as The Mandala, Mothering, and Book Business. She is also the editor of The Soul of Creativity and coauthor of Butterfly Kisses.

Tona’s interests include fitness, raising her two teenage boys (always interesting), knitting, and trying new things (such as hot-air ballooning, trapeze flying, and white-water rafting).

As a new Bookbuilders West board member, Tona is putting her extensive knowledge in green publishing to use as a member of the Green Committee.

This book is intended to be fun to both look at and read. The subject is low-budget food advertising and packaging from the past. The square trim allows the illustrations to be wide or tall, and the two-column layout lets the text columns disappear when needed for art placement without disrupting the page architecture. Frontmatter and chapter opener design elicit nostolgia for the era.

The administrative lobby is designed to be visually open and accessible, with separate entries to the north and the south from visitor and staff parking areas. The design addresses the severe Montana winter climate by enabling the north (visitor) entry to the lobby to be shuttered throughout the winter months by means of operable, insulated panels. During this period, visitors and staff are redirected to the south lobby entry, where a copper-clad vestibule provides an air-lock for winter use.

We used photographs of the original book to capture the colors of the paper and the actual artwork. MINDFULNESS HELPS US recognize what is going on in the present moment. for all ages. When we breathe in mindfully, we are aware of our in-breath. This is mind- fulness of breathing. When we enjoy drinking our tea and drink it with full awareness of the present moment, this is mindfulness of drinking. When we walk and become aware of every step we make, that is mindfulness of walking. Practicing mindfulness does not require that we go anywhere else. We can practice mindfulness in our room or on our way from one place to another. We can do the same things we always do—walking, sitting, working, eating, and talking—except we do them with awareness of what we are doing. Mindfulness is an energy that we can generate for ourselves. We can all breathe in and out mindfully. We can all move mindfully. Every human being has the capacity to be mindful, so it is not something strange. We all have a seed of mindfulness in us. INTRODUCTION: Touching the Earth helps us in many ways. It can help you touch your nature of connectedness, your “no sameness and no otherness,” with your adults, friends, and all beings. When you feel restless or lack confidence in yourself, or when you feel angry or unhappy, you can kneel down and touch the Earth deeply. Touch the Earth as if it were your favorite thing or your best friend. The Earth has been there for a long time. She is mother to all of us and she When we touch the earth, we breathe in and, joining our palms, touch them to knows everything. I have learned during my life that someone who doesn’t have compassion cannot be happy. Without the energy called compassion, we’re cut off from the world. We’re not in touch with other living beings. So we eat in such a way that compassion is possible. With our awareness of nature and living beings, we can learn to produce and eat food in such a way that life around us and within us is still possible. As we learn more about this every day, we can eat our breakfast in such a way that our compassion grows and our anger begins to diminish.

This is a book about changing organizations from within so that they function in a more environmen- tally responsible way. A paramount concern during production was to make the book representative of its own message. To this end, great effort was put into selecting materials and processes that impacted the environment as little as possible. We chose not to use conventionally printed jackets in order to reduce paper waste. The text paper is 100% post-consumer fiber, processed chlorine free, certified EcoLogo, certified FSC Recycled, and manufactured using biogas energy. In addition, the paper backing on the spine cloth uses FSC-certified paper.

106 green publishing In our search for the most sustainable paper source, we were impressed by the environmental benefits accrued for every ton of Enviro100 Book paper used instead of virgin paper. The specific benefits are as follows: (1) saving the equivalent of 17 mature trees, (2) reducing solid wastes by 1,081 lb., (3) reducing the quantity of water used by 10,196 gallons, (4) reducing suspended particles in the water by 6.9 lb., (5) reducing air emissions by 2,098 lb., and (6) reducing natural gas consumption by 2,478 cubic feet by using biogas.
