3804 Kilarney Street Subscription $10.00 per annum Vol.l1 No. 2 Port Coquitlam, B.C. Renewable January 1st June 1992 CANADA, V3B 3G6 Published:Mar.Jun.Sep.& Dec. Page 1 I was beginning to worry that this issue of the Newsletter was going to be nothing but lists of material that has arrived since the March issue. I think the "Reference" list is the longest I can remember. Needless to say some terrific material has been received and I will try to give you a few of the highlights. The Devon indentures and deeds that Jim Whitelock has collected while putting togetlier his history of the Langtree families is unbelievable. Some of the deeds go back to the late 1500's and tracing the farms down through the years has enabled us to get a rough idea how they transferred from generation to generation and this has given us the best picture yet of the likely line of descent. The same type of material for the Pitton and Farley, Wiltshire families is being collected by Sue Clives although her task is going to be even tougher. In the 1780 Land Tax Assessment there are no fewer than eight different Whitlock families in village of about 50 households!! I remember Ralph Whitlock telling me years ago there were so many people named Whitlock in Pitton that one family was known as "Head" Whitlocks to differentiate tliem from other families. Years later no knew why "Head" and we had assumed it was because of the marriage of Charles Whitlock and Sarah Head in 1809 but the documents Sue Clives has sent now show Jonathan Head Whitlock much earlier than 1809 so the mystery remains. Marianne Whitlock's work on the wills and the Chelsea families continues and one of the articles in this issue deals with a terrific find Marianne made regarding the Adminstration of Richard Whitlock's estate in 1665. Marianne also mentions that will of General John Whitelocke (1758-1833) talks about a son Rev. William Spencer Whitelocke so am looking forward to the notes Marianne took. Beryl Metherell, who is not even researching Whitlocks, continues to send us gems she comes across and John R. Whitlock of London has uncovered some terrific new information about the Langtree families. John's research into the Heaman/Heyman family has unearthed the baptism October 27, 1644 of Mary Heaman, who married Thomas Whitlock in 1673 and John has also come across terrific information on the family of Rebecca Holman that I know will be of interest to those descended from this part of the family. Things haven't been idle on this side of the Atlantic either. In this issue there is an announcement of a July 1992 reunion at Betty Adams of those interested the families and Mary Cecil Cordell's collection of Union Co., South Carolina deeds and legal documents has filled in a huge gap in our records. Mary's collection of Roane Co., Tennessee records is as great as her South Carolina one and connected many of the Tennessee families we still had been unable to place. For the first time inyears there are three people working on the New Jersey families and Judy Wendt's and Doug Truran's information together with the extensive collection we received from William Kyle Whitlock has pulled together many of the New Jersey families and refocused my interest on one of the first families I worked on back in tlie 1960's. We'll find Chuck Rockett's Reuben Whitlock of New Jersey yet!! Marilyn & Jerry Finke's work on the Michigan families has been great and the material they found on the Platte Co., Missouri Whitlocks gave us terrific details on this part of the family. Gwen Hurst's information about the Whitlocks of Wythe Co., Virginia gave us the clues we needed to be fairly certain they are descendants of James Whitlock and-Agness Christmas and thus connect these two families together. My thanks to everyone for keeping me so busy over the past few months. The ultimate reward for all this is the seven letters I received as I was writing this from all around the world each looking for a Whitlock ancestor and to one degree or another I can tell I will have something for each of them. Our first letters ever interested in the Whitlocks of Sweden and Prussia!!

Several of the contacts we have made lately have come from the Genealogical Research Directory which came out a few weeks ago and each issue of the Genealogical Helper has had a couple of people looking for Whitlocks or Whitelocks so there has been quite a bit of new

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.ll No. 2 June 1992 Page 2 activity lately. I have also put together a four page information sheet on the Whitlock Family Association and have been sending it out to genealogical societies across the US and in Europe offering free help for anyone interested in tlieir Whitlock or Whitelock ancestors. I have written to quite a few of the people researching collateral lines and passed on information to many others doing one name studies of families that are connected to the Whitlocks. Over the years people have sent information on many of the families the Whitlocks married into and I now have a drawer of these files. If someone writes regarding their connection to the Whitlocks I will pass back anything else I have on that family. An example of this is the Smale family of Devon for which I think I have three pedigrees going back to the 1700's and several other bits and pieces. I received a letter recently from Gwen Broad who had written back in 1983 and I had sent off some material relating to her Smale family. Gwen sent the write-up she has now done on the Smale family and a couple of charts as she wanted to return the favour even though "it adds nothing to your knowledge of the Whitlocks". Gwen's Smale charts show three connections to the family that I had not realised including the fact that John Whitlock and his wife Catherine Palnier of Langtree were first cousins!! I had a terrific conversation recently with Steve Cotham, Head of the McClung Historical Collection, Knox County Public Library, Knoxville, Tennessee. Part of this collection is the genealogical papers of Tom Roach. LOng time subscribers will remember that Tom started the Whitlock Gleanzngs Newsletter in 1981 and it was the combination of our two Whitlock Newsletters that resulted in the current Whitlock Family Newsletter in 1985. Tom's collection takes up several shelves and is mainly correspondence and copies of research Tom worked on. We had tried several times to track down the whereabouts of Tom's papers following his death in 1985 so am very pleased to have found them. They were donated to the Knox County Library by his mother, Beatrice, who Steve mentioned is alive and well and living in a home in Knoxville. (See X1285) I mentioned in a previous issue that we had our first chart sent in on the Personal Ancestral File (PAF) system that the Church of the Latter Day Saints put out. This was the WHITLOCK25 family, The Whitlocks of Virginia #3 and the aim is as more information is put in this format we will convert to this method because of the ease of transferring information from one computer to another. I figured out how to set up multiple families on the PAF system and we now have our second family in the PAF format as Judy Koehler has kindly sent in the WHITLOCK24 family, The Descendants of Abraham Parker and Rose Whitlock. I took Judy's disk and copied it into the computer and then added the few bits and pieces that Judy's disk did not contain. This family is now the first I will keep in this format only and any updates will be done to the PAF(24) file. While on the subject of the computer I have also done the first conversion of our card indexes to the dBase IV system. I am slowly working my way through our birth indexes and comparing them to the LDS records and adding family references and source codes. I have made it to 1634 so is very slow going but both systems are usable in the meantime. The capability to search electronically through the complete indexes is something my sister, Necia and I only dreamed about when we first started them in 1968. There are other small rewards as well as I occasionally come across an entry in the IGI that has been missed in the many updates we have done since 1974. I have made some inroads with the Census Text file which is a typed copy of all the census extracts that have been sent in. I have completed Canada and England 15 now done ul? to and including Middlesex. In the US records Missouri, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia are complete and New York is done up to 1840. This file is about 80 pages now and is becoming a very useful tool as I can use the computer to search for entries and easily make copies when answering queries. It may take several more years to complete but hopefully will be a document worth publishing when it is finished. Susan has signed up for the Summer Semester at Simon Fraser University so we will be sticking pretty close to home this year. Maybe a few days in the Okanagan near the end of August out otherwise day trips so if any of your holiday plans have you heading out this way please let us know. Otherwise when you get together WIththe family this summer don't forget the family history and I am hoping for a few more of the short write-ups like the couple I received last year. Your story about your family. Have a great summer.

THOMAS WHITLOCK OF BARBADOS In the June 1984 issue of Tom Roach's Whitlock Gleanings Newsletter there was an item that may provide one of the missing links between the Whitlocks of American and their connection back to England. Tom listed the will of Thomas Whitlock who died at St.Phillips, Barbados in 1688. The will mentions his wife Elizabeth and children Thomas, James, Mary and Elizabeth. We have not been able to determine who this Thomas was or how old he was at the time of his death. I have no Thomas and Elizabeth marriages between 1636 and 1688 but there are a couple of Thomas & Elizabeths that could be possible candidates. The first couple were living at St.Dunstan, Stepney, London where their daughter Elizabeth was baptised May 1,1682. The second is in the form of an administration granted in 1717. It is in latin but we can tell Thomas lived in the parish of St.George, Southwark, Surrey and what is not clear is the meaning of the meaning of the phrase, "Merchant of King Solomon". Strangely there is another administration granted ID 1688 to Maria, widow of Thomas Whitlock of St.George, Southwark, Surrey. Tom mentions his source for the will of Thomas Whitlock was the following publication: Barbados Records, Wills & Adminstrations. Vo1.21681-17oo. The will was dated Oct.14,1687 RB/41 p.82 If anyone is willing to take on tracking down some of the Barbados records I would say this will and any other references we can find to Thomas Whitlock are worth further investigation. If apyone is planning a trip to Salt Lake City it may be interesting to know what might be available there. Sources: WG3:2:22; PR029; LDS

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.ll No. 2 June 1992 Page 8 ALBERT WHITLOCKE, GOLDSMITH In the list of London wills that Marianne Whitlock sent in (R599) there was an entry for 1572 for Albert Whitlocke of St.John Zachary parish in the City of London, Goldsmith. St.John Zachary is a small parish just north of St.Vedast and bounded by St.Leonard Foster Lane, St.Mary Staining and St.Anne & St.Agnes. Unfortunately the parish registers only date from 1693. We do not know much about Albert but can speculate that his father may have been Thomas Whytlocke, Citizen and Goldsmith also of St. John Zachary, whose will was proved in 1557. We have three other references, all from the Hugenot Society's publication, "Aliens in London". In 1567 in Aldrychgate Ward lived "James Colman, Dowchman" (Dutchman) who was with Alban Whitlock. In the parish of St.Anne and St.Agnes, 1568 there is a listing for "James Cromar, servant to Albert Whitlock, goldesmythe, Scottes person". Lastly in 1571 also in the parish of St.Anne and St.Agnes is an entry for Jacob Colman. "borne in Andwarpe, he cam into England at Bartholomewe tyde was fyve yeares, and hath contynued all the same tyme lacking one quarter in this parish; he cam to see the cauntrye, and to worke for his lyving; he is of our parishe, and servante to Alban Whitlock, goldsmythe. Douche person, English church" Hopefully the Worshipful Company of Goldsmith's records will yield additional information about both Albert and Thomas Wliitlocke and if possible we win eventually acquire copies of both their wills and discover more about them. Betty is looking for anyone with possible links to Bennett Whitlock from Virginia who settled in Union Co., South Carolina in the early 1800's. There has been quite a bit of new material come in relating to the South Carolina families and I urge any of you with roots in South Carolina to attend if you can. Reunions are a terrific W?y to share research and get to know others interested in the same area. I was tempted myself to fly down for a few days. Good luck and I am sure it will be a terrific afternoon.

Whitlock Family Newsletter Vol.ll No. 2 June 1992 Page 9 QUESTIONNAIRES Q135 Descent from Thomas & Hannah (Phillips) Whitlock (M 1770's ) of Wythe Co. Va from Gwen Hurst Q136 Descent from Edward Carlton & Frances Mary (Roe) Whitlock (M1882) of Gisbome, N.Z. from Sheryl Webb RICHARD WHITLOCK, PAINTER-STAINER In the List of Testamentary Records for London that Marianne Whitlock sent in (X1262) was an adminstration I had wanted to have a look at for several years. The record concerned Richard Whitlock who, with several of his family, died of the plague in 1665. Richard was a member of the Painter-Stainers guild and I felt he was the most likely candidate to be the father of John Whitlock, Stationer whose apprenticeship record showed his father was Richard Whitlock, Citizen and Painterstainer. Richard lived the parish of St.Michael Bassishaw and while several of his children were baptised in this parish there was no mention of a John. The record Marianne found states admimstration was granted to Rose Dove, widow and aunt of John and Ann Whitlock, children of Richard!!

I also believe this Richard is the one mentioned in Margery Whitlock's will of 1658. Margery was the daughter of John & Agnes (Planner) Whitlock of Wokin~ham in Berkshire. She mentions two Richard Whitlocks in her will, calling both of them 'cozen". One is "Doctor" Richard Whitlock (1616-1666) (See: Vicar of Ashford article WFN Vo1.6:3:3) and the other is called "Richard Whitlocke of LOndon, Painter" and I believe is this Richard.

Richard's wife Mary and was probably the Mary Laurants who married Richard Whitlock at St.Peter Pauls Wharf, London October 26,1647. Richard and Mary appear to have had six children and four of them were buried between July 28 and September 1,1665 along with Mary on July 30 and Richard August 26. We have still to determine how Richard is related to Margery Whitlock and how he fits into the Whitlocks of Wokingham family but I think we have a good indication that he does. Margery had six brothers and several nephews named Richard and as the word "cozen" was also used for nephew I am sure one of them was this Richard. (One of Margery's nephews was the Thomas Whitlock (1615-1659) who settled in Rappahannock, Virgima and I believe we will eventually find that James Whitlock of Ware Co., Virginia is another nephew, probably a son of Margery's brother William.) It may be that the mention in the Adminstration of Rose Dove may provide us with a clue. It is unfortunate the records of the Painter-Stainers Guild do not appear to extend back to the 1630's when it is assumed Richard would have been apprenticed as that would have given us his father's name. Bit by bit this is coming together ana our thanks again to Marianne for unearthing the latest clue. Also included in the information Marianne sent was the administration of John Whitlock of St.Martin, Ludgate 1696. John was the son of Richard and we have quite a bit of information on him. I will do an article for the September 1992 Newsletter on him.
