Big walk, Little splash challenge

April - September 2012

The challenge… Walk, or swim, 209 miles - the equivalent of the distance between Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch to the Olympic Stadium, London (as the crow flies).

Radyr & WI Federation, .

About us

Radyr & Morganstown WI was formed in 1957 and quickly went on to become an integral part of the .

In October 2011 we celebrated our 600th meeting. On 1st April 2012 we had 68 members ranging in age from 55 to almost 95!

Ours is a very active Institute and we have a number of special interest groups - reading (3), genealogy (2), walking and craft with some more in the ‘our WI is an pipeline - in short something for everyone. integral part of the We meet on the second Monday of each month in the local village hall. community’

At our last Annual Meeting in November 2011 our President, Secretary and Programme Secretary stepped down having come to the end of their term in office. Our enthusiastic new committee compiled an ambitious programme for 2012 and we have lots of new ideas for the year ahead - starting with the ‘Go On’ initiative which will commence in September 2012. We have matched experienced internet users with learners who, by means of monthly one to one sessions, will introduce them to the joys and benefits of going online.

Big walk, Little splash!

Our location - a perfect blend of coast and countryside. Radyr is located on the outskirts of , just five miles from the City Centre. Many of our local walks involved going along part of the which passes through Radyr giving us the opportunity to go south to Cardiff and Cardiff Bay or north to and Pontypridd.

The 55 mile long Taff Trail is a multi-purpose route between the Cardiff waterfront at Cardiff Bay in the south and the Market Town of Brecon in the north.

A large proportion of the Taff Trail is designated "Traffic Free" which has been achieved by using the routes of former tramways, railways, canals and present day canal towpaths, including the original rights-of-way, embankments, cuttings and viaducts. Many of these routes have important historical significance to the industrial heritage of South Wales and make for very interesting walks.

Big walk, Little splash! Our aim We used the Big Walk, Little Splash challenge to bring all members of our Institute together with a common goal - our aim was to get 100% participation and improve our general wellbeing. Members have a WE NEED diverse range of interests and span different age groups. Achieving this YOU! challenge in terms of mileage and participation would be no mean feat.

Some of our members are elderly and find walking extremely difficult so we created opportunities for them to be involved. Even walking a short distance would be a huge challenge for them. Without their involvement we would not achieve 100% participation and we think their contribution is worthy of recognition with a In fact they are all stars to us!

We were very keen that many of the group activities were carried out locally. Radyr is ideally placed just five miles from Cardiff City Centre and on the edge of the countryside.

To our delight members were very enthusiastic and rose to the challenge. We drew up a list of different types of group walks to showcase our local area. Members were invited to come forward to lead each group walk and also to take part in individual walks. Some of our members would be taking part in walks while on holiday and were keen that these walks could also be included in our overall total.

We came up with some innovative ways to help ‘not so mobile’ members get involved and bought a pedometer so that we could calculate the mileage accurately! Our walks varied in length and difficulty.

‘Plas Newydd, located in Llanfair PG or to give it it’s full name Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwyll-llantisiliogogogoch, Anglesey is the home of the Marquess of Anglesey. It is in a most beautiful setting beside the Menai Strait with spectacular views of Snowdonia. On Monday 23rd April whilst my husband, son and grandchildren were climbing Snowdon my daughter-in-law and I explored the delights of this lovely house. Included in this was a two and a half mile walk through the woods bordering the Strait and along the shore. Signs of spring were everywhere and although it was cold the weather was fine and we even saw the sun!. Our walk concluded with lunch in the very pleasant Tea Rooms’.

Date: 30 April 2012 Completed by: Isobel Brown

Total distance walked: 0.5 miles Description of the walk : Isobel is one of our senior members. Due to a long period of hospitalisation last year she finds walking difficult and now has the help of a carer from Cross Roads Care who regularly takes her out for short walks. Isobel was keen to take part in our challenge and made a special effort to walk with her carer to our Treasurers house to pay for one of our outings. This involved walking along a relatively flat road and then one with a fairly steep incline before retracing her steps back home.

Date: April 2012 Completed by: Louise Rigby Total distance walked: 15 miles Description of the walk : ‘I walk my Cairn Terrier, Meg, every morning and afternoon. Usually in the morning we walk about one and a half miles to a large field behind the Cricket Club in Radyr, where I live. This field is a favourite with dog walkers and we meet lots of people there. Meg loves having a good run with her friends and I enjoy a good chat with mine - so both of us are happy! In the afternoon we generally walk to Radyr Woods, a local wildlife area. This is a wooded area with streams and ponds. It is also home to lots of rabbits which Meg gets plenty of exercise chasing (but never catching) while I like walking around and looking at the plants and birds. ‘Meg enjoys a

good run with her friends while I chat to mine”

On Monday mornings we do a longer walk of about two and a half miles with my friend Elaine and her retriever Charlie. We walk through Forest Farm, another local nature reserve. It is a lovely walk and a very nice way only to start another dog walking week.’ Louise and Meg contributed one week of their walks to our challenge. 164 miles to go!

Summary: Sue and her husband were on holiday in Malvern and had a lovely walk in the Malvern hills. They went to the local tourist information office to pick up leaflets on walks in the area. They chose the longer walk in the walking brochure which took them up to the summit of the Worcestershire Beacon. From the top they turned downhill to St Ann’s Well, which was a popular port of call for water cure patients in the past. Date: 5 May 2012 Completed by: Janet Boyce Total distance walked: 10 miles Description of the walk: Walk around Kidwelly, Carmarthenshire. Summary: Walks were held all over Wales today to celebrate the opening of the 870 mile long Wales Coast Path. The Wales Coast Path is the first of its kind in the world and is a continuous route which runs from Chester in the North to Chepstow in the South. This is Janet’s account of the walk ‘My sister, her friend and I set off for Kidwelly on a beautiful sunny morning and were really looking forward to the walk up into the hills. The three of us were born and brought up in Kidwelly so were very familiar with the locality even though we have all moved away now. The walk would be a real challenge for me as I hadn’t covered this distance with my 5 year old artificial hips before!

‘I hadn’t

covered this distance with my 5 year old artificial hips before!’

Martin our leader, who had planned the walk, and David who worked for Ordinance Survey led us off promptly at 10am. From Glan yr Afon nature reserve (which in our day had been the town rubbish tip) we continued along the coast road then went up the hill to the village of Llansaint, from where we enjoyed wonderful views over Kidwelly and as far as the Gower Peninsula and Rhossili.

20

Radyr & Morganstown WI

As we walked down from Llansaint an even more spectacular view emerged. Sitting down in the sunshine to eat our packed lunch we were able to see the coastline from Llanstephan with its castle right around to Tenby and Caldey Island - a truly magical view.

On next to St Ishmael’s Church which dates from the 6th Century, used by pilgrims as a stopping place on their way to St David’s cathedral in Pembrokeshire. I have passed this church many times but never before stopped to visit - which I shall certainly do in future. The next part of the walk was a real struggle for me due to the steep incline and my general lack of fitness - at one stage I even contemplated giving up! We walked up a very long bridle path which was quite narrow, however by making regular stops along the way up I made it to the top.

‘to celebrate the opening of the Wales Coast Path’

From here we proceeded from Broadway around to Allt Cunedda which gave us views across to Mynydd y Garreg, made famous by Ray Gravelle, the Welsh rugby player. We then made a big loop back to the Nature reserve where we had started and Martin confirmed that we had walked a total of 10 miles. I was very proud to say I DID IT! We then went to the Princess Gwenllian Centre where we enjoyed a very welcome cup of tea and a slice of cake in the shape of Wales only made specially to celebrate the opening of the Wales Coast Path’. 137.1 miles to go!

Group walk - Cardiff Bay Date: 5 May 2012 Number of walkers: 3 Who took part: Gaynor Leaf, Jill Newbould, Sue Llewelyn. Total distance walked: 6.2 miles Description of the walk: Circular walk of Cardiff Bay Summary: We started off at the lovely Norwegian Church, built in 1868 on land donated by the Marquis of Bute to provide religious and social care to thousands of Norwegian sailors who sailed into Cardiff docks for coal. This flat circular walk takes in many iconic buildings and we were able to trace Cardiff’s heritage as we walked along. We walked across the Cardiff Bay Barrage, a major civil engineering project that was the catalyst for the regeneration of the old docklands turning it into the vibrant waterfront community that it is now. The walk took us along Penarth Marina where we were able to cross the River Ely at the recently opened Pont y Werin (The People’s bridge) past the Wales White water rafting centre and the International Sports village before heading north along the river to the Ely bridge where we turned off the road to enter the Wetlands area and here we saw a pair of blue tits gathering reed marsh to make a nest. We continued on to with its numerous restaurants and bars and the beautiful old before stopping for lunch.

Total distance walked: 2.1 miles Description of the walk: Local history walk around Old Radyr Summary: As part of the Radyr Festival the local history society organise an interesting walk around areas of special interest. This year the walk was around Old Radyr, and we were blessed with a glorious afternoon, which was a welcome relief after all the recent rain. A group of over 50 locals met at the Radyr Court pub, formerly one of the oldest houses in the area before visiting St Johns Church which had been specially opened for us . Group walk to the Quarry Date:10 May 2012 Number of walkers: 10 Who took part: Margaret Lewis, Diane Page, Pat Williams, Gaynor Leaf, Rosanne Holmes, Jill Newbould, Sue Llewelyn, Janet Boyce, Chris Dale, Lucille Sharp. Total distance walked: 4.3 miles Description of the walk: To and from the Taffs Well Quarry. Summary: We organised a visit to the local quarry for members to have the opportunity to see the results of a £14m investment programme. The quarry was started in 1921 with further excavations granted in the 1940s. In 2008 a major project was undertaken to re-route the traffic to and from the site. This involved boring a tunnel through the rock to create a new entrance and took more than two years to complete. We were given a presentation on the workings of the quarry before being driven up to a viewing platform 140m up on the rim which gave us wonderful views over the site and the whole of Cardiff in the distance. It was very strange to be able to look down at Castell Coch which is situated high on the opposite hillside.

Date: 13 May 2012 Number of walkers: 2 Who took part: Gaynor Leaf, Pat Williams Total distance walked: 10.3 miles Description of the walk: Radyr to Cardiff to mark Cardiff’s participation in the 2012 London Olympics. Summary: Meeting at Radyr Station we walked over the bridge and on to the Taff Trail to Cardiff. It was a glorious day and there were lots of walkers and cyclists on the path, there were also lots of rowers on the river as we passed the Llandaff Rowing Club. The river level was still high after the recent heavy rain. Walking through we were able to enjoy the scenery and see the bluebells between the trees. We felt really blessed to have such wonderful open spaces where we can walk right in the heart of the City.

‘a lovely walk through the park on a glorious day’

Coming out of the park near the Castle we headed for the Civic Centre where the Olympic rings have recently been erected in front of the City Hall to mark Cardiff’s participation in the 2012 Olympic Games. These have

26

Radyr & Morganstown WI quickly become a tourist attraction and there were lots of people taking photographs there - we thought it an ideal photo opportunity too.

Cardiff’s Millennium Stadium will host the opening matches of the Women’s football which will be the first competition in the 2012 Olympic Games. We then headed for the Millennium Stadium for another photo opportunity.

‘the Olympic rings have

In keeping with the theme of this walk we went to a World Buffet restaurant for lunch - we really were taking on the International spirit of the Games now!

Instead of taking the bus back home we decided to ‘push ourselves’ a little more and walked back through the park to Llandaff adding significantly to our mileage. This was a few miles more than we had only planned to walk but we thought it worthwhile and a truly OLYMPIC EFFORT! 114.2 miles to go!

This sponsored walk took them to Partrishow Church which is situated on the southern slopes of the Gader Range in the Brecon Beacons National Park, just north of Abergavenny.

The church dating from the 11th century has an intricately carved 15th century rood screen and one of the oldest fonts in Wales. It was the site of murder and miracles and people still leave offerings there. It certainly sounds an interesting place to visit and the group were delighted that their walk added another £180 to the U3A Eisteddfod fundraising total.

Summary: ‘This walk is part of the Taff Trail. I enjoy walking very much and starting at Radyr I walk by the side of the Taff River, where I often see heron waiting patiently for fish and ducks bobbing about on the water. The walk takes me near a small new housing development and then on to Hailey Park, a much loved space by young children and dog walkers. Trying to avoid the many cyclists and joggers on the walk I meet the river again where rowers and canoeists from Llandaff Rowing Club can be seen on the water. I skirt the new Swalec cricket ground and I am in the Bute Park, part of the castle grounds, donated to Cardiff by the Marquis of Bute. Individual member walk

Date: May/June 2012 Completed by: Alex Broad Total distance walked: 10 miles Description of the walk : Alex had a very serious car accident last year which means that she now has difficulty walking. To help her gain mobility she undergoes regular physiotherapy sessions and visits a gym to work with Dan, her personal trainer, once a week. ‘on her first Summary: This is Dan’s account of Alex’s activities attempt Alex managed ‘Alex has been training with me once a week for the last eight months. three minutes When Alex reached a certain stage in her rehabilitation she came to see me of walking” to have some personal training with the hope of progressing further with things like balance, core stability, mobility, flexibility and at the top of her list, walking. When Alex fist came to the gym, she had to learn how to walk on a treadmill which is not as easy as it looks. I’m sure she would agree with that! The treadmill would become an important part of her training regime over the following months as both a warm up and a fitness enhancer. On her first attempt Alex managed a whopping three minutes of walking before feeling both tired and a little unsteady on her feet. The plan was to steadily increase both the pace and the distance of her walking so that she could really start to feel the benefits outside of the gym. Over the next few weeks the treadmill work improved greatly and after four months, Alex was able to walk unassisted for 25 minutes. Unfortunately for her you never arrive at the final destination with gym work, it just gets harder and more demanding the better your fitness and general conditioning gets. So we didn’t stop at that. Over the following weeks the incline started going up so that now Alex was effectively walking up the equivalent of Everest! Well not quite but it wasn’t far off!

42

Radyr & Morganstown WI

I’m pleased to say that Alex has improved so much that she now walks for between 20 and 30 minutes every week at the beginning of her sessions and that the work that follows is a lot more demanding than when she first started. If you know Alex, you will know that patience isn’t something that she’s quite grasped yet and she still wants the results of her hard work to come yesterday, so we try our best every week to make this happen. In the last couple of months Alex has walked well over 10 miles and I’m pleased to say she definitely qualifies for this challenge’.

Well done Alex, you have made a great contribution to our challenge!

We have included one day of Harry’s walks in the challenge. Lesley describes what they did that particular day. ‘We started at Penarth Pier and walked up the hill to the Common where Harry was able to run around to his hearts content. Then getting back on to his lead we went along the coastal pathway to Lavernock Point passing the stone hut where Marconi made his first wireless signals over open sea between Lavernock Point and Flat Holm island, some 6 kilometres away on 13 May 1897. A plaque to commemorate this achievement has been erected at the nearby St Lawrence Church. We enjoyed the wonderful views over the sea towards Weston Super Mare before retracing our steps back to the Pier. In the evening we took Harry for his evening stroll locally’.

Overall summary

Little did we think when we suggested taking part in this challenge that it would have had such an effect on our Institute. It captured everyone’s imagination and members thought up a range of innovative ways they could get involved. Even those who had difficulty with mobility thought of ways that they could contribute - and contribute they did, in all sorts of weather, as you can see from this journal. Everyone played their part in helping us achieve 100% participation.

We organised group walks so that some members could visit areas they might not have explored previously with people from outside their immediate circle and new friendships were formed.

The challenge has also provided us with a lasting legacy as one of our most senior members, Mary - a sprightly 94 year old, has now started a monthly walking group for those members who are unable to walk very far. They are calling themselves ‘The Little Walkers.’ Whilst their walks might not cover great distances they provide a means for them to get together once a month for a stroll, a cup of tea and a chat.

We have thoroughly enjoyed taking part in this challenge, the first our Institute has participated in for many years, and hope that the pleasure it has given us is reflected throughout this journal.
