We also thank the representatives from national and international organizations that are active in the field of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE), and officials from the Ministry of Education and People's Development (MINOV), who provided detailed information on their various programs and activities. This study was commissioned by the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). Since its inception in 1969, UNFPA has been providing technical and financial support to numerous initiatives in the field of education in population, development and environment, family and sexuality. Under the UNFPA Strategic Plan 2012-2013, the Regional Programme for Latin America and the Caribbean (LAC) has planned a series of actions aimed at contributing to the full exercise of the right of adolescents and youth in the region to live a fulfilling sexual life, healthy and free from discrimination. The present assessment was carried out behind the frame of supporting government to realize Universal Access to Comprehensive Sexuality Education for all young people. It is no wonder that the United Nations proclaimed 2005 to 2015 the Decade for Education for Sustainable Development. The proclamation shows that the world, with the rapid advances in information and communication technologies coupled with the ongoing globalization, is in need of reevaluating and overhauling the current education policies and practices to achieve sustainable development. Many of the more economically advanced countries regularly assess their school curricula and make adjustments to suit their development. Developing countries, especially those in the Caribbean, are lagging behind in curricula development that could facilitate sustainable development. Without serious appraisals of current school curricula, Suriname will face difficulties in being part of the information society. It is therefore no exaggeration to suggest that the country urgently needs to find the tools for reassessing and developing school curricula for sustainable development. Achieving higher standards of education and improving the quality of teaching and learning go hand in hand. Hence, this paper aims to achieve three principal objectives: first, to examine the concept of sustainable development as related to the international and national contexts; second, to review the current goals, structure and focus of teacher education in Suriname; and, lastly, to highlight the challenges posed by education for sustainable development (ESD) for teacher education and articulate some ways of responding to the challenges.

    Suriname MODERATE ADVANCEMENT In 2013, Suriname made a moderate advancement in efforts to eliminate the worst forms of child labor. The Government began participating in a multi-country USDOL-funded project to enhance capacity to combat child labor. During this time, the Government also implemented a national child labor survey. The Government continued to expand education programs for vulnerable populations and took anti-trafficking efforts by taking steps to establish a shelter for child trafficking victims. However, children in Suriname continue to engage in child labor in mining and in the worst forms of child labor in commercial sexual exploitation. Suriname has not risen the compulsory education age to equal the minimum age for employment. Additionally, Suriname does not collect or publish data on child labor inspections and violations. I. PREVALENCE AND SECTORAL DISTRIBUTION OF CHILD LABOR Children in Suriname are engaged in child labor in mining and in the worst forms of child labor in commercial sexual exploitation.(3-8, 10, 11) Table 1 provides key indicators on children’s work and education in Suriname. Introduction At its sixth session, the United Nations Permanent Forum on Indigenous Issues recommended that an expert undertake a comparative study on the subject of boarding schools.1 This report provides a preliminary analysis of boarding school policies directed at indigenous peoples globally. Because of the diversity of indigenous peoples and the nation-states in which they are situated, it is impossible to address all the myriad boarding school policies both historically and contemporary. Boarding schools have had varying impacts for indigenous peoples.

Before its independ- ence, Suriname was a colony of the Netherlands, starting as early as 1667. After its independence in 1975, the multilingual Republic of Suriname main- tained Dutch as its official language, the language of education and public life. In this paper, we shall address two seemingly conflicting developments which take place in this former Dutch colony: on the one hand, the growing use of the creole language Sranantongo as a lingua franca across Suriname and on the other hand, the persistence of Dutch. We shall argue that the linguistic developments in Suriname must be understood against the background of a young nation which is constructing its own post-colonial national identity.
