    EVELYN WAUGH STUDIES Vol. 43, No. 2 Autumn 2012 Captain Evelyn Waugh and the Special Operations Executive (SOE) by Donat Gallagher James Cook University “There was something in him . of the sort of subaltern who was disliked in his regiment and got himself posted to S.O.E.”[1] Early in the Second War the British Government set up a highly secret Special Operations Executive (SOE). Its many tasks included sabotage, espionage, and aiding resistance movements in nations occupied by the Axis; in Winston Churchill’s words, its mission was “to set Europe ablaze.” It had many auxiliary units, one of which might interest United States readers while suggesting the flavour of the organization. This was British Security Coordination (BSC) in the Rockefeller Center in New York, whose history (unlike that of most other such units) survived shredding through the enterprise of some of its members. Led by a Canadian tycoon, William Stephenson, its brief from Churchill was to “do all that was not being done and could not be done by overt means” to “drag America into the war.” Before Pearl Harbour, BSC sabotaged United States firms dealing with Germany and undermined isolationist groups like America First and the pro-Nazi Bund. This they did by blackmail and assassination and by running a “rumour mill” against opponents of the war with information obtained from wire taps and burgled safes. They also bought a news agency to plant untrue stories in obscure papers; friendly columnists like Walter Winchell and Drew Pearson then picked them up. BSC faked incidents to influence American public opinion, the most famous being the forging and planting of a “secret Nazi map” and the “Belmonte letter.” The “secret map” showed South America divided into five Nazi states, one of which included the Panama Canal, while the “Belmonte letter” outlined a Nazi plot to overthrow the Bolivian Government.

    The Educational Backgrounds of Leading Journalists June 2006 NOT FOR PUBLICATION BEFORE 00.01 HOURS THURSDAY JUNE 15TH 2006 1 Foreword by Sir Peter Lampl In a number of recent studies the Sutton Trust has highlighted the predominance of those from private schools in the country’s leading and high profile professions1. In law, we found that almost 70% of barristers in the top chambers had attended fee-paying schools, and, more worryingly, that the young partners in so called ‘magic circle’ law firms were now more likely than their equivalents of 20 years ago to have been independently-educated. In politics, we showed that one third of MPs had attended independent schools, and this rose to 42% among those holding most power in the main political parties. Now, with this study, we have found that leading news and current affairs journalists – those figures who are so central in shaping public opinion and national debate – are more likely than not to have been to independent schools which educate just 7% of the population. Of the top 100 journalists in 2006, 54% were independently educated an increase from 49% in 1986. Not only does this say something about the state of our education system, but it also raises questions about the nature of the media’s relationship with society: is it healthy that those who are most influential in determining and interpreting the news agenda have educational backgrounds that are so different to the vast majority of the population? What is clear is that an independent school education offers a tremendous boost to the life chances of young people, making it more likely that they will attain highly in school exams, attend the country’s leading universities and gain access to the highest and most prestigious professions.

    WORDS IN THE SQUARE CELEBRATING 175 YEARS OF INSPIRATION AT THE LONDON LIBRARY 5TH – 8TH MAY 2016 ABOUT THE LONDON LIBRARY On 3rd May 1841, Thomas Carlyle, the eminent Victorian philosopher and writer, was finally able to realise his vision for a new lending library for London. What he created that day has gone on to influence and inspire generations of readers and writers - from Charles Dickens, Henry James, Charles Darwin and Harriet Martineau to Virginia Woolf, T.S. Eliot, Laurence Olivier, Agatha Christie and Winston Churchill amongst many others. Today, The London Library, with over one million volumes, is one of the largest independent lending libraries in the world. To all who use it, it is a special place. A place where they can be enriched by the wealth of knowledge within its walls, a place where they can write, research, read and let their imagination roam, a place to browse the bookshelves and be inspired. Having never received any significant or regular public funding, the Library has always relied on those who wish to use it paying an annual fee to do so. Such membership is open to everyone and we welcome all applications. As vital as that membership income is, the ongoing challenges of growth and development have meant that the Library has long benefited from private philanthropy. 175 years ago its launch was only possible because of the support of many, including Prince Albert, who gave both books and money. Today, as a registered charity, that support is still needed to ensure that The London Library remains a vibrant working home for literature.

    Following the money: news, sexual assault and the economic logic of the gendered public sphere Abstract This article engages with news coverage of the sexual assault scandal involving elite politician Dominique Strauss-Kahn and hotel cleaner Nafissatou Diallo to explore what their media treatment reveals about current relations of gender and power in the public sphere. Several key questions inform the analysis. What happens when a low status complainant speaks to power? What strategies of denigration take place to challenge her credibility? And how (in what terms) do the media make sense of the encounter between the two parties? Feminist media analyses of sex crime in the news have shown how misogynist attitudes underlie the depiction of women who speak out. This analysis reveals how the rules of media engagement are stacked against the speaking subject because she is both female and poor. It finds that economic inequalities, as well as those of gender and race, are dramatically inscribed in the mythic narratives of news. The overall conclusion is that the public sphere and its dynamics of denigration and disrespect towards women who complain are problematically organised along faultlines embedded in the gendered socio-economics of the public and private/domestic realms.
