20 SEASON OUTLOOK With unprecedented hurdles standing in front of the CSU Bakersfield men’s basketball team, Rod Barnes is focusing his squad to drown out the distractions and push forward into the 2020-21 season.

“It’s just a mindset,” Barnes said of what it will take for the Roadrunners to work hard and have a good attitude in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. “This is going to end one day and we want to be on the good side of it.”

Heading into his tenth year as CSUB’s Head Coach, Barnes is comparing the difficult circumstances his team is facing to the task of defeating a worthy rival: “It’s almost like it’s a game against a really tough opponent. We’ve played some tough opponents. There’s going to be some ups and downs, but if we can stay persistent and consistent and be the mentally tougher team in the end, then we’ll get results.”

Big West Bound

Nearly lost in the noisy shuffle the pandemic has created is the fact that CSUB is set to make its debut in a new league this season: the Big West Conference. Reuniting itself with historical rivals and enjoying massive savings in both time and costs associated with travel are just two of the many benefits Bakersfield will enjoy in its new conference.

“The move to the Big West is huge for us,” Barnes said of the long-awaited transition, “especially late in the year. There were times in the WAC that I would kind of tone down to give our guys rest from the mental and physical fatigue from traveling so much and into different kinds of climate.”

Bakersfield’s Head Coach is also fully prepared for the challenging schedule the Big West slate represents. Barnes described CSUB’s Big West foes as having more size, overall, than his team has been used to in the past, while also stating that the league is deep, armed with more consistently strong squads.

Before the `Runners can hit the floor to start their first Big West schedule, Barnes has put together an abbreviated non- conference slate. A three-time conference Coach of the Year and the 2001 Naismith National Coach of the Year, Barnes described the significance of these games to prepare CSUB: “It’s important just to get back to the floor and play…Before conference, this year more than ever, I think it’s more about us; it’s more about what we do and doing it well than it is about any opponent.”

The `Runners feel like there was unfinished business left on the court when the 2019-20 season ended abruptly on March 12th. Nearly nine months will separate Bakersfield’s last two competitive games and the pandemic has made the return to the court difficult. Despite the adversity, Barnes’ squad is ready to sprint full speed ahead into the upcoming season with an experienced group of veterans set to lead the way for a talented group of newcomers. 21 SEASON OUTLOOK Returners

CSU Bakersfield returns a large group of experienced `Runners including seven seniors, three of whom are in their fifth collegiate seasons. Bakersfield enjoys the vast majority of its production returning to the squad in 2020-21; in fact, CSUB is one of just 17 Division I squads that returns at least 70% in each of the following statistical categories: points (76%), rebounds (81%), assists (77%), steals (80%), and blocks (73%).

Taze Moore and Justin Edler-Davis are in their fifth years in the `Runner program while former Richmond transfer De’Monte Buckingham is back for his redshirt senior season as well. Bakersfield native Justin McCall is a four-year `Runner in his senior season while former junior college transfers Czar Perry, Ronne Readus, and Shawn Stith all have returned for their senior years. CSUB’s seven seniors bring 593 games of collegiate experience to Bakersfield’s blue court.

Also returning to the squad for their second years in the program are Jack Schoemann (former Colorado State transfer) and Ray Somerville (redshirt freshman center). The pair both earned valuable experience last year, on the court for Schoemann and in practice for Somerville. Newcomers

Including Somerville, Bakersfield will enjoy the debuts of five new `Runners this season as Travis Henson, Cameron “Beno” Smith, Grehlon Easter, and Shaun Williams are all set to run out on the blue Valley Strong Court for the first time.

A trio of junior college transfers, Henson, Smith, and Easter are all eager to make their mark at the NCAA Division I level. Barnes described all three as impact players: “Beno is a steady forward, a heady player with a really good IQ for the game and he plays with a really good motor. Travis is a bigger wing who gives us great length. He can stretch the floor with his shooting and he’s a really good backside defender. Grehlon is another really good defender and a really good shooter, especially when his feet are set.”

Williams transferred to CSUB from Kansas State in December 2019 and is anxious to lend his talents to Bakersfield this year. Barnes also praised Williams’ basketball IQ and described the 6-foot-3 guard as a solid scorer and an excellent passer. While Somerville is already familiar to the squad, `Runner fans may want to know a bit more about the 6-foot-10 center. Barnes described him as a long and athletic big man with good hands who is gaining confidence and will provide much-needed frontcourt depth in the larger Big West.

Rounding out the CSUB roster for 2020-21 is Jahveon Medearis, a 6-foot-2 true freshman guard out of Downey, Calif., who is scheduled to sit out this season as a redshirt. 22 STATISTICS

HISTORY OF THE ICARDO CENTER California State University, Bakersfield saw the completion of the Jimmie and Marjorie Icardo Center in 1989. Originally named the Number of CSUB wins at CSUB Activities Center, the building was dedicated in honor of the the Icardo Center since long-time Roadrunner boosters who donated more than $2.5 million opening in 1989 245 to support Roadrunner Athletics. The 44,000 square-foot facility originally seated 3,800 fans. Origi- nally funded by the State of Califor-nia in the 1987-88 fiscal budget, Icardo Center record separate improvements financed by the CSU Bakersfield Foundation under Rod Barnes included 700 improved chair-back seats and air conditioning. A 2,000 80-29 square-foot, $100,000 reception room was financed by the Icardo Family. The Roadrunners moved into city-owned Centennial Garden (now Rabobank Arena) for the 1998-99 season and played exclusively at the downtown facility for the next decade, including their first sea-sons as an NCAA Division I program. Starting in the 2011-12 season, CSUB played selected games at both the Icardo Center and the arena before moving back on campus exclusively starting in the 2014-15 season. Due to the move back onto campus, the Icardo Center received a notable facelift in the fall of 2011 with the installation of the nation’s first blue floor. The playing surface is the first of its kind in volleyball and created quite a buzz when installed with ESPN, CBS, and NBC and other college sports networks writing stories about this new potentially-trend-setting playing surface. As part of the continued renovations, additional amenities include a concession area in the lobby, a state-of-the-art south system, dual scoreboards at either end of the playing surface, and a high-definition video board. In Summer of 2014, the facility underwent construction again, which included a new ceiling and walls color scheme matched to compliment the newly redesigned floor. New blue seats were added in the Summer of 2015 featuring contoured bench seating on the north end of the facility. Similar seating was added to the south end along with additional chair-back seating on both sides in the Summer of 2016, changing the venue capacity to 3,497. Renovations have continued on the Icardo Center as it is becom- ing a top-tier athletic facility. The Summer of 2018 saw the men’s and women’s locker rooms get a complete overhaul to further im-prove the student-athlete experience. The old main court was also ripped out and replaced by the same state-of-the-art playing surface used as the primary home court of the NBA’s Minnesota Timberwolves and in the practice facilities of the Orlando Magic and Cleveland Cavaliers. The new, still-blue court was made possible by the gener-osity of Kern Schools Federal Credit Union and is now known as the “Kern Schools Court”. This past sum- mer, lighted Roadrunner and “Icardo Center” signs were added to the outside of the building. The CSU Bakersfield men’s basketball team boasts an impressive all-time record at home of 245-46 (.842) in the Icardo Center. CSUB is 51-19 (.729) at home since Jan. 1, 2015 and the `Runners have won 42 of their 60 (.700) home games over last five seasons. 39 Dr. Lynnette Zelezny, University President
