ISSUE 15 JUNE 2012

CDT’s amazing fund raiser could result in a world record!!! 24 divers came to Parkside to spin for loot! The money’s still coming in but will be hundreds of pounds. Research shows that no-one’s ever done this before, so now Guinness World Records are investigating to see if we can be the first to attempt it. If so, we’ll have to do it all over again with official judges!!

The divers, 8 to 18 yrs, were given score sheets & someone to count their every revolution.15 minutes of mind-numbing, merry madness! Non stop! Astonished parents cheered from the gallery. Gob-smacked coaches heckled & encouraged from the poolside. Commentator, Adele Cliff, watched the seconds tick on the clock. Some did single somies from the edge – the swiftest solution. Ben Sambrook did 7 front 3 ½ s on 5m: BIG splashes! Owen Harrison is a show off .It’s official! An armstand!

As minutes slipped by, shattered divers were still dragging themselves from the water for one last go… No-one had any idea how many spins had been spun.

SO HOW DID WE DO???? At last time was up. A quarter of an hour gone. Last minute somies completed. Exhausted divers collapsed around the pool.

Miss Microphone gathered in soggy score sheets. The judges got out their calculators…

Each diver averaged 53 somies in 15 mins

Emma Watson 97.5 spins. Average 6 per minute. “It was harder than the usual coaching session!” Rosy May Trewin Marshall 93 spins. “I felt really sick after 5 mins!” Ben Sambrook 75 spins “Which way is up?” Elora Graham 67 spins including 39 from poolside

CHEERS! GUINNESS SAY THEY’LL CHECK THEIR RECORDS!!!

CDT contacted the global group, Guinness World Records, to discover whether anyone had done such a thing. GWR have agreed to investigate. "We are pleased to inform you that your record application has been transferred to our internal system. We will process your claim and give you an answer to your application in approximately four-six (4-6) weeks. At Guinness World Records, we take great care to evaluate every claim we receive. Before we accept or reject a new record proposal, we always carry out claim-specific research, which may require the expertise of external consultants.” Watch this space. If they give the go-ahead, we’ll have to do it all again. At least we know how!

Dan and Daley at Olympic Trials in Sheffield

Daniel Goodfellow at just 15 was the youngest and highest ranked challenger to international dive star Olympian, Tom Daley in the 10 metre platform event at the Olympic qualifying championships at Ponds Forge in Sheffield (June 8/9/10). Daniel & synchro partner, Ross Haslam from Sheffield Diving Club, took silver behind Tom Daley 18, and 31 yr old 3 time Olympic veteran, Pete Waterfield. Dan then also took silver at the 3m synchro event, with a different partner – Freddie Woodward (City of Sheffield). This time the gold medallists were Nic Robinson-Baker and Chris Mears – both of them seniors. On the 10m he scored a perfect 10 on his reverse two and a half in the preliminary round. He came fourth overall. Even more amazing, Dan’s DD was 16.8 , whereas Tom Daley’s was 20.9. Waterfield’s 20..4 and Denny’s 20.3. Coach Marc Holdsworth was delighted. “This was his first ever Olympic trial competing at a senior level with a full 10m list. This was a stepping stone. For me it was all about Daniel's experience. All of this is preparation for the Junior European Championships in mid July in Austria.” EASTERN REGION CHAMPIONSHIPS MAY 27TH SOUTHEND It was triple birthday gold for Rosy May Trewin Marshall – but no piece of cake! On her 14th birthday and her first regional comp in Grp B she took first on 1m, 3m and platform, gaining personal bests at 1m and platform. It was triple gold too for Owen Harrison and Elora Graham. Between them they cleaned up in Grp C taking top honours in 1m 3m and 5m.

Daniel Murphy (Boys B),bronze at 3m, 4th at 1m Dominic Jaunzens (Boys D) 4th at 1m, 3m and 5m. CDT’s Sharyn Bord also won an award…but in her case it was a long service and dedication award for her tireless work and effort on behalf of the Cambridge Club. She herself used to dive with the Club ages ago and has never stopped being an enthusiastic supporter. Now, as the Treasurer, she has been key in drafting in top class coaches and transforming the club into the most successful 5 metre venue in the country. BIG BIG BIG CONGRATS TO THERESA CURTIS She’s the clever fund-raiser who sorted out the somersaultathon and who organised the easyfundraising idea. Here is the very first cheque paid to the Club for £99.21. This was achieved by buying things through the easyfundraising site. No cost. No problem. Try it out and help us gather loot!!!
