PRELUDE

WELCOME/ANNOUNCEMENTS GATHERING HYMN “Lift High the Cross” #660 Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name. Come, Christians, follow where our captain trod, our king victorious, Christ, the Son of God. Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name. All newborn servants of the Crucified bear on their brows the seal of him who died. Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name. O Lord, once lifted on the glorious tree, as thou hast promised, draw us all to thee. Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name. So shall our song of triumph ever be: praise to the Crucified for victory! Lift high the cross, the love of Christ proclaim till all the world adore his sacred name. GREETING L The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. C And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY L Teach us, good Lord God, C to serve you as you deserve, to give and not to count the cost, to fight and not to heed the wounds, to toil and not to seek for rest, to labor and not to ask for reward, except that of knowing that we do your will, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. SHARING OF THE PEACE L The peace of Christ be with you always. C And also with you. WORD READING Jeremiah 20:7-13 7 O LORD, you have enticed me, and I was enticed; you have overpowered me, and you have prevailed. I have become a laughingstock all day long; everyone mocks me. 8For whenever I speak, I must cry out, I must shout, “Violence and destruction!” For the word of the LORD has become for me a reproach and derision all day long. 9If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” then within me there is something like a burning fire shut up in my bones; I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot. 10For I hear many whispering: “Terror is all around! Denounce him! Let us denounce him!” All my close friends are watching for me to stumble. “Perhaps he can be enticed, and we can prevail against him, and take our revenge on him.” 11But the LORD is with me like a dread warrior; therefore my persecutors will stumble, and they will not prevail. They will be greatly shamed, for they will not succeed. Their eternal 12 dishonor will never be forgotten. O LORD of hosts, you test the righteous, you see the heart and the mind; let me see your retribution upon them, for to you I have committed my 13 cause. Sing to the LORD; praise the LORD! For he has delivered the life of the needy from the hands of evildoers. L Word of God, word of Life! C Thanks be to God! PSALM Psalm 69:7-18 L It is for your sake that I have borne reproach, that shame has covered my face. C I have become a stranger to my kindred, an alien to my mother’s children. L It is zeal for your house that has consumed me; the insults of those who insult you have fallen on me. C When I humbled my soul with fasting, they insulted me for doing so. L When I made sackcloth my clothing, I became a byword to them. C I am the subject of gossip for those who sit in the gate, and the drunkards make songs about me. L But as for me, my prayer is to you, O LORD. At an acceptable time, O God, in the abundance of your steadfast love, answer me. C With your faithful help rescue me from sinking in the mire; let me be delivered from my enemies and from the deep waters. L Do not let the flood sweep over me, or the deep swallow me up, or the Pit close its mouth over me. C Answer me, O LORD, for your steadfast love is good; according to your abundant mercy, turn to me. L Do not hide your face from your servant, for I am in distress—make haste to answer me. C Draw near to me, redeem me, set me free because of my enemies. GOSPEL Matthew 10:24-39 [Jesus said:] 24“A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; 25it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! 26“So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing secret that will not become known. 27What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. 28Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. 29Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. 30And even the hairs of your head are all counted. 31So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. 32“Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; 33but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. 34“Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. 35For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; 36and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. 37Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; 38and whoever does not take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it. L The gospel of the Lord! C Praise to you, O Christ! SERMON HYMN OF THE DAY “Give Me Jesus” #770 In the morning when I rise, in the morning when I rise, in the morning when I rise, give me Jesus. Give me Jesus, give me Jesus. You may have all the rest, give me Jesus. Dark midnight was my cry, dark midnight was my cry, dark midnight was my cry, give me Jesus. Give me Jesus, give me Jesus. You may have all the rest, give me Jesus.

Just about the break of day, just about the break of day, just about the break of day, give me Jesus. Give me Jesus, give me Jesus. You may have all the rest, give me Jesus. Oh, when I come to die, oh, when I come to die, oh, when I come to die, give me Jesus. Give me Jesus, give me Jesus. You may have all the rest, give me Jesus. And when I want to sing, and when I want to sing, and when I want to sing, give me Jesus. Give me Jesus, give me Jesus. You may have all the rest, give me Jesus. APOSTLES’ CREED C I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth. I believe in Jesus Christ, God's only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead. I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen. PRAYERS OF INTERCESSION (Prayer response: “Hear Our Prayer”)

MEAL CONFESSION & FORGIVENESS L All of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death. C We know that our old self was crucified with him so that we might no longer be enslaved to sin. L We give thanks that we consider ourselves alive to God in Christ Jesus. Confident that we are promised newness of life through repentance and forgiveness, let us turn to God and to one another, confessing our sin...Gracious God, C Hear our cries to you: for our lack of compassion toward the poor and toward people of color, have mercy on us; for our failure to end the destruction of air, water, soil, and creatures on Earth, have mercy on us; for our disbelief in your power to make us whole, have mercy on us; for making war, have mercy on us; for mistrusting your Word, have mercy on us; for all that we have done and have not done out of hardened hearts, have mercy on us. Forgive us and renew us. Guide us into ways that do not deny you but lead to peace. Amen. L Do not be afraid. The One who was and is and is to come knows you through and through and has overcome death and sin to forgive you, so that you might be delivered into joy that has no end. Our sins are forgiven. We are alive to God in Christ Jesus. C Amen! Thanks be to God! HYMN “Let Us Go Now to the Banquet” #523 Let us go now to the banquet, to the feast of the universe. May we build such a place among us where all people are equal in love. God has called us to work together and to share ev'rything we have Let us go now to the banquet, to the feast of the universe. SENDING BLESSING L Neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor rulers, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, nor height, nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God in Christ Jesus. COUNCIL HIGHLIGHTS JUNE 2020 1. Pastor provided an extensive report on the parameters of in-person worship. She figured pew spacing and 6-ft. social distancing, ideas for communion distribution, and the current parameters for singing, as well as many of the challenges that come with all those things. Even though other congregations have chosen to reconvene for in-person worships, Council feels it is too soon for St. Andrew’s to come together for in-person worship or other gatherings at this time. The latest city, county, and health department data will be reviewed every month and Council decisions will be promptly shared with the congregation. 2. A “contact tracing list” will be implemented immediately. We will be keeping track of who is in the building so that, in the event we do have exposure to COVID-19, we know quickly who needs to be contacted. Marianne will keep this list to limit cross-contamination and exposure to others. 3. If you do come by the church office, please remember to wear a mask and remember to keep at least 6 feet away from Marianne and Pastor. Thank you for remembering to use hand sanitizer when entering and leaving the building. 4. The Lutheran Food Pantry has withdrawn the request to apply for a 501c3 license. 5. Blue Ox has been out to trim up the trees around the parsonage to remove the most dangerous limbs from around the house. More tree work needs to be done in the future. 6. Staycation Bible School is going well and is well- attended. Thank you to Miss Kristie for making this happen. 7. May Checking Balance Starting $11,136.10. May ending balance was $4,197.47. May Savings balance $46,401.19. May ending balance was $51,402.57. 8. For May 2020 regular giving was down a little bit. We were $7,645.15 under the budget estimate for May. Year to date regular giving is under the budget estimate by $7,835.52 Special giving for May was $913.00. Thank you to those who have continued to support the church financially during the pandemic with your offerings.
