SERVICE OF LIGHT Herbal Hilarity at UGC !

Members of Uggeshall Garden Club experienced a few Our guest speaker at this year's Service of Light on Sunday culinary delights at their September meeting, courtesy of 28th October at 6.00 pm will be the Bishop of . Karen Kenny who brought along a whole range of tasty herbs Bishop Mike and Vicar Alan will lead our commemoration from her allotment. of the centenary of the end of WW1. At the Service of Light we re-dedicate the floodlighting of St Peter and St Paul in memory of my parents, Lord and Lady Stradbroke.

I look forward to seeing you all in church.

We chewed on Sweet Cecily and declared it fit for a king (or queen). The sweet, aniseed taste really livened up the taste buds and Karen advised us to try it when stewing rhubarb or gooseberries or even to jazz up a salad. The verdict on chickweed was less positive, even though Karen said it was an ideal accompaniment to marmite. Some members took this to mean the marmite would disguise the sharp flavour! Colourful nasturtiums were handed round and the room fell silent as they were duly digested, followed by appreciative yums and mmms. Karen took us on a brisk and entertaining history of herbs covering everything from the tussie mussies carried by medieval folk to mask the noxious smells of street sewage and The Brown family from Cheltenham - Fiona (organ and ‘golden rain’ as Karen delicately put it, to the herbal contents piano), Carys (soprano) and Melvin (baritone) - who gave us of Henry VIII’s codpiece. We learned a lot, had lots of laughs a wonderful Harvest concert at on September and vowed to be more adventurous with our planting and 23rd. eating in future. We have booked them to return in the Spring, hopefully Marion Welham with Carys's brother Edward on trumpet.
