WILBERT SCHREURS Don’T APOLOGIZE FOR YOUR COMMERCIAL WILBERT SCHREURS DON’T APOLOGIZE FOR YOUR COMMERCIAL The discourse on the content of television advertising during the early years in Britain and the Netherlands. Contents Acknowledgments . 5 Introduction . 6 Television Advertising in Britain 1955-1964 . 15 Television Advertising in the Netherlands 1964-1975 . 51 Comparing the British and Dutch Experience . 85 Bibliography . 97 Index . 103 Acknowledgments This monograph is part of the project: Technology, Exchange and Flow: Artistic Media Practices and Com- mercial Application. This three year project was funded by the HERA (Humanities in the European Re- search Area) Joint Research Programme Humanities as a Source of Creativity and Innovation. It brought together expert teams at Plymouth University, VU University Amsterdam and the University of Applied Arts Vienna, and the archives The Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision in Hilversum and EYE Film Institute Netherlands in Amsterdam in a research partnership . The project explored the relationship between creativity and innovation within the contemporary European media sector, and asked how traffic between cultural forms in Europe, such as industrial/advertising film and new media arts on the one hand, and commercial exploitation of audio-visual media on the other hand, have been radically transformed at key moments . First and foremost, I would like to thank my colleagues from Amsterdam, Plymouth, and Vienna: Prof . dr . Bert Hogenkamp, Dr . Rudmer Canjels and Dr . Ivo Blom (VU University Amsterdam), Mark-Paul Meyer (EYE Film Institute Netherlands), Bas Agterberg, (Netherlands Institute for Sound and Vision), Prof . dr . Michael Punt, Dr . CHAPTER 1 Dark Nights, New Days Kieran Farrell It’s hard to find a turning point, but I think in many ways, the Farrell fight drove me on to realise my goal of becoming a world champion. 07.12.12 I was stood in the ring. I was gutted. I remember winning the fight, having the hand raised. Then I remember a noise – his mam. He was getting carried away on oxygen and she’s breaking her heart, holding on to the stretcher. The most horrible memory that will never leave me. HE nicest man in boxing is trying to compute what has just happened. He’s sat on a wooden bench against a grubby Toff-white wall, clothes neatly hung up on a rack with five pegs. There’s a musty, sweaty smell mixed with some sweet-scented deodorant . Exhausted, Anthony Crolla is slowly unwrapping his swollen, aching hands . The small, makeshift away-fighter dressing room is dimly lit. Other fighters from lower down the bill who’ve been sharing the room have boxed, changed and gone. The only people left now are a marked-up Anthony Crolla, his trainer Joe Gallagher, stablemate Paul Smith and Richard Thomas, an inspector with the 16 DARK NIGHTS, NEW DAYS British Boxing Board of Control.
