DEM WEEKEND 3 WELCOME FROM THE SCDP OFFICERS

Fellow Democrats,

We’re heading into a campaign season that can change the future of every South Carolinian. We have candidates for State House, Congress, and our Constitutional offices that can chart a different course for our state. They’ll expand Medicaid, eliminate the culture of corruption, and grow the economy. With one more Democratic vote in the State House last week, we could have created 3,000 jobs through solar energy. This election is our opportunity to make that a reality.

We know the Republican legacy in this state. They’ve been in power for twenty years now and have demonstrated the type of leaders they are.

South Carolina has the highest utility prices in the country thanks to Republican laws like the Base Load Review Act of 2007. They led us directly into the V.C. Summer scandal we’re having to deal with today. Democrats have been leading the effort to fix the mess, but all of South Carolina has already paid dearly for the mistakes of the Republican majorities.

When it comes to healthcare, Republicans have abandoned our rural hospitals and driven up the cost for every South Carolinian by allowing our tax dollars to fund healthcare in other states. Response times in critical situations have skyrocketed as closures have become commonplace. Even large systems have been struggling and spending more each year covering under and uninsured patients. The stroke of a Democratic Governor’s pen could change that reality.

Finally, there is nothing more pervasive than the Republican culture of corruption. Just in the last few weeks, we’ve seen its influence when Congressman Ralph Norman pulled out a loaded gun during a meeting with constituents in a public setting. The Republican Solicitor and Attorney General made it clear they didn’t think it was worth doing anything about. The law Congressman Norman broke is a felony punishable by up to 5 years in prison.

It’s one set of rules for them, and another for the rest of us. Don’t let anyone tell you that being a Democrat in South Carolina isn’t important or that we can’t win. We’ve got work to do electing our candidates to reverse this Republican legacy that we’ve been living with for far too long. We’re so thrilled that you’re joining us for the 2018 Dem Weekend and looking ahead to the hard work between now and November!

Sincerely,

Trav Robertson Lessie Price Anthony Thompson Scott Thorpe Chairman 1st Vice Chair 2nd Vice Chair 3rd Vice Chair

DEM WEEKEND 5 WELCOME FROM CONGRESSMAN JIM CLYBURN

My Fellow Democrats,

I am pleased and honored to welcome you to the South Carolina Democrats 2018 “Blue Palmetto Dinner” and “State Convention.” I hope as you transition from the Dinner to the Convention you will honor us with your presence at “Jim Clyburn’s World Famous Fish Fry.”

Some of you may recall that when I welcomed you last year I wrote, “in the U.S. House of Representatives, there would be no better start to taking back the majority in the United States House of Representatives than a victory in South Carolina’s 5th Congressional District in June.” We did not get the victory we sought, but we came within 2700 votes.

We lost that Special Election by only 3% in a Congressional District that Trump won by 18%. Democrats in the 5th District made up 15 points in eight months, a much better result than many expected and any of the experts predicted. We now have six months to make up the additional 4 points needed to be victorious in November. I am confident we will make it happen.

All of us can be proud that the “precinct-by-precinct turnout model” we developed for that “Special Election” last June was used for the Alabama Senate Special last November and Jaime Harrison, Antjuan Seawright and Kendall Corley went down there to help them implement it. That model is being developed for use in other “Red” and “Purple” states.

I also said in last year’s letter that, “Being a South Carolina Democrat has not been as easy in recent years as it was two decades ago.” But very little is easier today than 20 years ago. We are living in very challenging times, “times that try men’s souls.” But we are not “Summer Soldiers” or “Sunshine Patriots.” We are hard fighting Democrats and very loyal patriots; the kind of soldiers and patriots that will fight fiercely to reclaim the governorship and several Constitutional offices, increase the number of Democrats in legislative and local offices, and expand Democratic membership in our Congressional Delegation.

So I thank each and every one of you for keeping the faith and continuing the fight. Voters are beginning to see that Republicans have no plans to improve their lives and little interest in developing any. We must take this opportunity to demonstrate our capacity and commitment South Carolinians fulfill their dreams and aspirations.

I look forward to taking on this challenge with all of you as we work together to give real meaning to our nation’s motto, “E Pluribus Unum,” (out of many one).

With best regards, I remain Sincerely,

James E. Clyburn

DEM WEEKEND 6 About Alison Lundergan Grimes Secretary of State

Alison Lundergan Grimes is the youngest Secretary of State in the nation. Named a “rising star of the Democratic Party,” she is one of the only remaining statewide elected female Democrats in the South. Alison champions the ideal that’s at her core: every person deserves a fair shake and an equal chance.

Hailed as a “Southern steel magnolia,” she took the nation by storm when, at 35 years old, she challenged now-U.S. Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell. Despite $70 million spent against her, she kept the race neck-and-neck to the very end.

As Secretary of State, Alison has worked tirelessly to break down barriers to the ballot box. She implemented online voter registration, and has ushered in new laws that protect the voting rights of domestic violence victims and absentee voters. She is an advocate for the restoration of voting rights for Kentucky’s non-violent felons.

Alison has been recognized nationally as a leading voice in the fight to protect voting rights. She took on the Sham Voter Fraud Commission, telling President Trump “there’s not enough bourbon in Kentucky” to turn over voters’ personal information.

Alison has used her tenure as Secretary to drive citizen engagement. Currently, she is leading an effort to legalize medical cannabis to aid thousands of Kentuckians – especially veterans – who seek an alternative to addicting opioids. Alison also fights to end hunger in Kentucky, and launched a massive statewide food drive last year.

Before beginning her career in public service, Alison provided free legal help to domestic violence victims, and helped businesses create jobs and foster economic growth as a successful business attorney.

Alison received a Bachelor of Arts in political science from Rhodes College in Memphis, Tennessee. Alison obtained her law degree from , Washington College of Law, in Washington, DC. Alison lives with her husband, Andrew, in Lexington, Kentucky.

DEM WEEKEND 11 About State Senator Nina Turner Ohio

Offering a powerful narrative of overcoming adversity, Senator Nina Turner is a gifted orator who puts political and social trends in unparalleled perspective. She’s committed to the uplift of progressive ideals and values, avocation she views as bigger than political affiliation.

Most recently a national surrogate for U.S. Senator during the turbulent 2016 Democratic presidential primary, Nina Turner is an insightful advocate and agent for social change. Today, she serves as president of , an organization created by Senator Sanders to revitalize American democracy, empower progressive leaders and elevate political consciousness.

When she served in the , Senator Turner was known as a fierce advocate, garnering recognition and praise by elected leaders from across the political spectrum. She maintained an uncanny ability to both unify opposing viewpoints and challenge political leaders to live up to their highest selves.

Her political experience as an elected member of the City Council and a strategic leader of the Ohio Democratic Party afford her a unique understanding of government processes, and how to overcome partisan perspectives. Outside of the political arena, Senator Turner has decades of experience as a college professor and motivational speaker. Cleveland’s Inside Business Magazine recognized her as one of the Top 25 most powerful people in Northeast Ohio for 2015.

DEM WEEKEND 12 About U.S. Senator Jeff Merkley Oregon

Oregon’s Senator Jeff Merkley has dedicated his life to public service. His entire career, from running non- profits to the U.S. Senate, has been animated by a simple philosophy: that each of us has a responsibility to make the community, the nation, and the planet a better place

As the son of a sawmill worker and first in his family to go to college, Jeff’s always been focused on giving working Americans a chance to get ahead. He’s taken on payday lenders, banned predatory mortgages, and led the effort after the 2008 crisis to block banks from gambling with taxpayer-insured deposits.

He has been an outspoken defender of Planned Parenthood, championed equal pay legislation, and wrote a provision ensuring that breastfeeding moms get the privacy and time to pump at work.

Jeff is a leading climate champion. In 2015, Jeff introduced the Keep It in the Ground Act to end new oil, gas and coal leases on federal lands and waters. A champion for ordinary Americans, Jeff fights every day to repair our broken democracy that skews the playing field for the privileged and powerful. He’s been a leading critic of Citizens United and voter suppression efforts. In April 2017, Jeff spoke for nearly 15-1/2 hours on the Senate floor in opposition to the nomination of Neil Gorsuch to fill a stolen Supreme Court seat.
