By CD Floro Sota Editor ere are official results from the Reservation Election Board for the 2014 SWO Primary Election held last Tuesday, September 30, 2014. HThis election marked the first time that the SWO Tribe has used automated ballot counting, and the system seemed to work well. The process was much speedier than in past years, when the ballots were counted, and sometimes recounted, for hours throughout the night of the election. Oyate gathered in the rotunda of TiWakan Tio Tipi to witness the count. Large-screen monitors were placed so that each District’s vote Oyate come into the rotunda at TiWakan Tio Tipi for the first-ever machine ballot counting for a Tribal election. The 2014 SWO tally was visible to everyone. Primary Election was held last Tuesday, September 30, 2014. The machine counting went much faster than the days when ballots were People snapped pictures of the hand counted by the Reservation Election Board. preliminary screenshots, and Tom Wilson of Tribal radio station KXSW posted them on the station’s Facebook page throughout the evening. The coffee was good, as was the soup, and conversation at the Tribal elderly table (where we sat most of the evening) was lively. “Spirited” is a good description, covering lots of topics but mostly coming back to “Tribal politics” and how much better things would be if … this … or that. Or if this person wins, or that one. Nobody was betting, though, good thing because if there’s one thing I’ve learned going from one administration to another on the Lake Traverse Reservation, you never really know … until the results are in. We would like to have had access to those screenshots, which somehow were deleted from posts after the night was over – otherwise, we would have posted them on our Sota website and on Facebook. It would also have been good if REB had sent files of the spreadsheets. Instead, we received faxed copies – not useable for our text scanning software. So we are retyping the results for this news article. Here is the lineup of candidates who will be seeking votes in the November 2014 SWO General Election: SWO Tribal Chairman: Duane “Bruce” Renville and Michael I. Selvage Sr. SWO Tribal Vice Chair: Sara Lincoln and Garryl Rousseau Sr. SWO Tribal Secretary: Crystal Owen and Francis Crawford. Buffalo Lake District: Kenneth “Dickie” Johnson and Lorraine Rousseau. Lake Traverse District: David Flute and William LaRoque. Long Hollow District: Virginia Max and Justin Chanku. Old Agency District: James “JC” Crawford and Edmund “Eddie” Johnson Jr. Here are the candidates on the General Election ballot in Districts that did not have Primary Elections. Big Coulee District: Jerry Eastman and Tracy Heminger. Enemy Swim District: David Gill and Skyman Redday. Heipa District: Marc Beaudreau and Winfield Rondell III.

First, I want to thank the people that supported me and cast their vote for me in the Primary. I humbly ask for your continued support on November 4th during the General election. Second, I would like to commend all the candidates that participated in the Primary; it shows your bravery and I admire and respect each and every one of you. Tokatakiyan. Taku ka? Tokatakiyan. Wicoie de “tokatakiyan” owakahnige. Ho, tokatakiyan Oyate taku iyuwastepi kta, he mitawoihanbde he e edo. The broad definition of “tokatakiyan” is to have foresight but more importantly “tokatakiyan” carries heavy meaning in the context of “looking out towards the future for the betterment of our Dakota people.” This includes cultural survival, sovereignty, and accountability. The decisions made over the past forty years have had different impacts on our people. In the 70’s we broke through the BIA barrier that had us under “lock and key” for almost a century. In the 70’s many of our Sisitonwan/Wahpetonwan people fought for major issues such as the Indian Self Determination and Education Act and the Indian Religious Freedom Act and these accomplishments established a new foundation for our Tribe to build off of. Building off the foundations built in the 70’s the 80’s progressed our Tribe by further exerting our rights as a sovereign Dakota Nation and established entities such as the Tribal school and Gaming. Again, our very own SWST people stood brave in the face of adversity and withstood harsh threats from local State and Federal government agencies. The point I am trying to make in this brief history is these people had “tokatakiyan;” they understood the decisions that were made would impact our future generations and they did not yield from those that challenged these revolutionary accomplishments. To name the people that were instrumental in the 70’s and 80’s would take a whole page, I know who they are and I believe most of you reading this know who they are. If elected, it is this type of attitude I intend to bring to our Dakota people. Our institutional memory needs to be unlocked and we need to ask ourselves, “Over the past forty years, what administrative decisions have been made and how have they impacted our status as a Tribe?” “Who has benefited from these administrative decisions?” “How has each decade evolved?” We all have our own answers, however, these questions are the reason why I speak of “tokatakiya;” who has been looking out for the best interest of our Dakota Nation and who has been looking out for their own best interests? It is time for new leadership to have and understand “tokatakiyan.” Hau, henana epekte. Wopida tanka. O’we tanka hoksina de miye. ~Paid for by the Candidate~ ~Paid for by the Candidate~
