Name _______________________________ Classroom Teacher ____________________________ Theater is an intensive experience: If you have never been in a show, the rehearsal process and production week can be very time consuming. When you miss a rehearsal, it impacts the entire cast, not just you. If you are selected to be a lead in this play, it needs to be one of your primary extra-curricular activities for the season. The rehearsal schedule will be dependant on the size or type of each role, but lead characters can expect to attend 1-2 extra rehearsals per week. We will work around a reasonable level of conflicts, but your availability MAY impact the size of the role that you are offered. We will try to utilize school recess times, but will need some outside of school rehearsals for some roles. I realize that if I am offered and choose to accept a larger role, solo, or help in the stage crew, I may be required to attend rehearsals during my recess times, before or after school, and/or on weekends. I also understand that my attendance to each rehearsal is important, and that if I have an unexcused absence from a rehearsal, I may be replaced as a lead in the musical. Good luck and have fun! “Oliver!” Lead Character Audition Information March 1, 2013 We are excited that you are interested in being one of the lead characters in this year’s musical, “Oliver!” Attached, you will find the audition material so you can begin practicing your lines. We will hold auditions after school on March 25th and 27th in the music room. Please come prepared to read for the ONE ROLE you would like to be cast in the most as our time will be limited. With over 60 non-lead speaking parts and 15 extra solos available, we look forward to working with you all in making another memorable Island Park performance! Don’t feel you need to memorize the material; just know it well enough to express yourself. We look forward to hearing you read! Oliver Fagin Nancy The Artful Dodger Bob (the Artful Dodger’s partner) Bill Sykes Mr. Brownlow (Oliver’s wealthy grandfather) Singing Auditions The following characters have a solo or more so need to prepare a song to sing. We would prefer to hear the suggested song below, but any song is fine (ie. America, the Beautiful, Star Spangled Banner) Oliver – “Where is Love?” or “Who Will Buy?” Fagin – “Reviewing the Situation”, “Be Back Soon”, or “Pick a Pocket or Two” The Artful Dodger– “Consider Yourself” Bob – “Consider Yourself” Nancy – “As Long As He Needs Me” or “I’d Do Anything” Optional: (could be a singing character or not ) Note: Mr. Brownlow Bill Sykes – “My Name” does NOT sing a solo AUDITION TIPS Qualities to work for in your speaking part audition: 1. Diction –articulate each word so we can understand you 2. Inflection & Emphasis – you change the pitch of the words so you are not monotone and you emphasize, or say louder and slower, important words 3. Volume –speak loud enough for us to hear you 4. Poise –speak with confidence and composure Qualities to work for in your singing part audition: 1. Diction – you articulate each word so we can understand you 2. Pitch – you sing in tune, with the correct pitch 3. Emphasis – your singing tells a story and creates interest in the listener 4. Volume – you sing loud enough for us to hear you and apply breath control 5. Poise – you sing with confidence and composure, using good singing posture 1 “Oliver!” Audition Script This packet contains selections from the musical that we will be using for the auditions. There are many roles in this musical that do not require auditions, but students wanting to play one of the main roles below, should come prepared to read the selections listed by their characters name. We will not be looking for memorization, but that students can deliver their lines convincingly. Oliver - prepare page 2, 3, 5, 7 The Artful Dodger - prepare page 2, 3, 4 Fagin - prepare page 3, 4, 7 Bob - prepare page 2, 3, 4 Nancy - prepare page 3, 4, 5, 6 Bill Sykes - prepare pages 4, 5, 7 (underlined characters will also need to Mr. Brownlow- 6 sing a brief solo) Oliver, Dodger, Bob and Charley OLIVER: (whistling, humming or singing to himself) Reading #1 Food, glorious food! Hot sausage and mustard! While were in the mood – Cold jelly and custard! DODGER: What yer starin at? Ain’t yer never seen a gent? OLIVER: No – I haven’t. CHARLEY: Tired? OLIVER: I’ve been running hard. BOB: Oh I see…You must be runnin’ away from the Beak. OLIVER: The what? DODGER: Now don’t tell me yer don’t know what a beak is, me flash mate? OLIVER: Isn’t a beak what a bird’s got? CHARLEY: My eyes – how green! A beak – is a madg’strate, for your information. Are you accommodated? OLIVER: No – I don’t think so… BOB: Then accommodated you shall be, me old mate! There’s a certain house – and we know a respectable old gentleman lives there, wot’ll give you lodgin’s for nothink, and never ask for the change – this is – and that is, if any other gentleman wot he knows interduces yer. And does he know me? I should say he does! OLIVER: Who is the respectable old gentleman, then? Is he a charity gentleman? DODGER: Well, I would’t eggzackly say that – not eggzackly. But if we interduces someone it’s alright, on account of we happen ter be pertickler favourites of Mister Fagin…that’s his name – Mister Fagin. By the way if we’re interducing you to Fagin, we better know who you are – me old china plate. OLIVER: My name’s Oliver – Oliver Twist. DODGER: And my name’s Jack Dawkins – better known among me more hintemate friends as the Artful Dodger. OLIVER: Pleased to meet you, Mister Dawkins. CHARLEY: And I’m Charley Bates. Mister Archibald Charles Winchester Bates, Esquire. At your service. And me mate here is Roberta Higginbotham Braithwaite McGuernsey, but we calls her Bob. 2 Fagin, Oliver, Dodger, and Bob FAGIN: I hope you’ve all been hard at work today, my dears. DODGER: Hard? Reading #2 BOB: As rocks! FAGIN: Good kids! Good kids! What have you got Dodger? DODGER: A couple of wallets. FAGIN: (Weighing the wallets) Not as heavy as they might be. But very nicely made! Ingenious workman, ain’t he, Oliver? OLIVER: (Examining the wallets) Very ingenious, sir. (BOB roars with laughter) FAGIN: (To BOB) And what have you got, my dear? BOB: Nose-rags. (HE produces two large silk handkerchiefs – one red, one purple.) FAGIN: Well, they’re very good ones, very! – yellow and green! You haven’t embroidered ‘em too well tho’ Bob – so we’ll have to pick the initials out with a needle. You’ll need to learn how to do this too, Oliver my dear. Won’t he kids? (KIDS shriek with laughter) KIDS: Yeah, but not ‘alf. FAGIN: But in the meantime, you’ll have to learn how to make (meaning steal) wallets like Dodger and Bob here. You’d like that, wouldn’t you, my dear? OLIVER: Ohh yes, Mister Fagin, if you’ll teach me. FAGIN: Certainly my boy, no fee! Just do everything you see Dodger and Bob do. Make 'em your models, my dear -- especially Dodger -- He's going to be right little... Bill Sikes! Now then, is my handkerchief protruding from my pocket? Fagin, Dodger, Bet, and Nancy Reading #3 (FAGIN is whistling “PICK A POCKET” softly to himself. Every now and then, HE stops whistling to hear if there is anybody about.
