Probability as it is understood nowadays, probability in the sense of Kolmogorov (see [3]), is not easy to grasp, since the de®nition of probability as a normalized measure on a s-algebra of ``events'' is not a very obvious one. Furthermore, the discussion of different concepts of probability might help in under- standing the philosophy and role of ``applied mathematics.'' So the exploration of the creation of axiomatic probability should be interesting not only for historians of science but also for people concerned with didactics of mathematics and for those concerned with philosophical questions. -

MARC LANGE University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill I Recently, there has been a modest resurgence of interest in the ‘‘Humean’’ problem of induction. For several decades following the recognized failure of Strawsonian ‘‘ordinary-language’’ dissolutions and of Wesley Salmon’s elaboration of Reichenbach’s pragmatic vindication of induction, work on the problem of induction languished. Attention turned instead toward con- firmation theory, as philosophers sensibly tried to understand precisely what it is that a justification of induction should aim to justify. Now, however, in light of Bayesian confirmation theory and other developments in epistemology, several philosophers have begun to reconsider the classical problem of induction. In section 2, I shall review a few of these developments. Though some of them will turn out to be unilluminating, others will profitably suggest that we not meet inductive scepticism by trying to justify some alleged general principle of ampliative reasoning. Accordingly, in section 3, I shall examine how the problem of induction arises in the context of one particular ‘‘inductive leap’’: the confirmation, most famously by Henrietta Leavitt and Harlow Shapley about a century ago, that a period-luminosity relation governs all Cepheid variable stars. This is a good example for the inductive sceptic’s purposes, since it is difficult to see how the sparse background knowledge available at the time could have entitled stellar astronomers to regard their observations as justifying this grand inductive generalization. I shall argue that the observation reports that confirmed the Cepheid period- luminosity law were themselves ‘‘thick’’ with expectations regarding as yet unknown laws of nature. -

There Is No Pure Empirical Reasoning 1. Empiricism and the Question of Empirical Reasons Empiricism may be defined as the view there is no a priori justification for any synthetic claim. Critics object that empiricism cannot account for all the kinds of knowledge we seem to possess, such as moral knowledge, metaphysical knowledge, mathematical knowledge, and modal knowledge.1 In some cases, empiricists try to account for these types of knowledge; in other cases, they shrug off the objections, happily concluding, for example, that there is no moral knowledge, or that there is no metaphysical knowledge.2 But empiricism cannot shrug off just any type of knowledge; to be minimally plausible, empiricism must, for example, at least be able to account for paradigm instances of empirical knowledge, including especially scientific knowledge. Empirical knowledge can be divided into three categories: (a) knowledge by direct observation; (b) knowledge that is deductively inferred from observations; and (c) knowledge that is non-deductively inferred from observations, including knowledge arrived at by induction and inference to the best explanation. Category (c) includes all scientific knowledge. This category is of particular import to empiricists, many of whom take scientific knowledge as a sort of paradigm for knowledge in general; indeed, this forms a central source of motivation for empiricism.3 Thus, if there is any kind of knowledge that empiricists need to be able to account for, it is knowledge of type (c). I use the term “empirical reasoning” to refer to the reasoning involved in acquiring this type of knowledge – that is, to any instance of reasoning in which (i) the premises are justified directly by observation, (ii) the reasoning is non- deductive, and (iii) the reasoning provides adequate justification for the conclusion. -

Mathematical logic offers an idealized account of correctness, namely, formal derivability. Informal proof is viewed as an approximation to the ideal. • A mathematician can be called on to expand definitions and inferences. • The process has to terminate with fundamental notions, assumptions, and inferences. Formal logic and mathematical proof Two objections: • Few mathematicians can state formal axioms. • There are various formal foundations on offer. Slight elaboration: • Ordinary mathematics relies on an informal foundation: numbers, tuples, sets, functions, relations, structures, . • Formal logic accounts for those (and any of a number of systems suffice). Formal logic and mathematical proof What about intuitionstic logic, or large cardinal axioms? Most mathematics today is classical, and does not require strong assumptions. But even in those cases, the assumptions can be make explicit and formal. Formal logic and mathematical proof So formal derivability provides a standard of correctness. Azzouni writes: The first point to observe is that formalized proofs have become the norms of mathematical practice. And that is to say: should it become clear that the implications (of assumptions to conclusion) of an informal proof cannot be replicated by a formal analogue, the status of that informal proof as a successful proof will be rejected. Formal verification, a branch of computer science, provides corroboration: computational proof assistants make formalization routine (though still tedious). -

This paper examines the relationship between quantitative research and eight major notions of logical positivism:(1) verification;(2) pro-observation;(3) anti-cause; (4) downplaying explanation;(5) anti-theoretical entities;(6) anti-metaphysics; (7) logical analysis; and (8) frequentist probability. It is argued that the underlying philosophy of modern quantitative research in psychology is in sharp contrast to logical positivism. Putting the labor of an out-dated philosophy into quantitative research may discourage psychological researchers from applying this research approach and may also lead to misguided dispute between quantitative and qualitative researchers. What is needed is to encourage researchers and students to keep an open mind to different methodologies and apply skepticism to examine the philosophical assumptions instead of accepting them unquestioningly. Induction and deduction are the two main types of human reasoning. Although deduction is the basis of the scientific method, almost all the scientific progress (with pure mathematics being probably the unique exception) has its roots to inductive reasoning. Fuzzy logic gives to the disdainful by the classical/bivalent logic induction its proper place and importance as a fundamental component of the scientific reasoning. The error of induction is transferred to deductive reasoning through its premises. Consequently, although deduction is always a valid process, it is not an infallible method. Thus, there is a need of quantifying the degree of truth not only of the inductive, but also of the deductive arguments. In the former case, probability and statistics and of course fuzzy logic in cases of imprecision are the tools available for this purpose. In the latter case, the Bayesian probabilities play a dominant role. As many specialists argue nowadays, the whole science could be viewed as a Bayesian process. A timely example, concerning the validity of the viruses’ tests, is presented, illustrating the importance of the Bayesian processes for scientific reasoning. -

Hegel’s ghost has haunted theoretical understanding and practice. His opponents first, and later his defenders, have equally defined their programs against and with his. In this way Hegel’s political thought has both situated and displaced modern political theorizing. This book takes the reception of Hegel’s political thought as a lens through which contemporary methodological and ideological prerogatives are exposed. It traces the nineteenth- century origins of the positivist revolt against Hegel’s legacy forward to political science’s turn away from philosophical tradition in the twentieth century. The book critically reviews the subsequent revisionist trend that has eliminated his metaphysics from contemporary considerations of his political thought. It then moves to re- evaluate their relation and defend their inseparability in his major work on politics: the Philosophy of Right. Against this background, the book concludes with an argument for the inherent meta- physical dimension of political theorizing itself. Goodfield takes Hegel’s recep- tion, representation, as well as rejection in Anglo-American scholarship as a mirror in which its metaphysical presuppositions of the political are exception- ally well reflected. It is through such reflection, he argues, that we may begin to come to terms with them. This book will be of great interest to students, scholars, and readers of polit- ical theory and philosophy, Hegel, metaphysics and the philosophy of the social sciences. Roughly, an actual infinity is a completed infinite totality. By contrast, a collection is potentially infinite when it is possible to expand it beyond any finite limit, despite not being a completed, actual infinite totality. The concept of potential infinity thus involves a notion of possibility. On this basis, recent progress has been made in giving an account of potential infinity using the resources of modal logic. Part I of this dissertation studies what the right modal logic is for reasoning about potential infinity. I begin Part I by rehearsing an argument|which is due to Linnebo and which I partially endorse|that the right modal logic is S4.2. Under this assumption, Linnebo has shown that a natural translation of non-modal first-order logic into modal first- order logic is sound and faithful. I argue that for the philosophical purposes at stake, the modal logic in question should be free and extend Linnebo's result to this setting. I then identify a limitation to the argument for S4.2 being the right modal logic for potential infinity. -

Cantor on Infinity in Nature, Number, and the Divine Mind Anne Newstead Abstract. The mathematician Georg Cantor strongly believed in the existence of actually infinite numbers and sets. Cantor’s “actualism” went against the Aristote- lian tradition in metaphysics and mathematics. Under the pressures to defend his theory, his metaphysics changed from Spinozistic monism to Leibnizian volunta- rist dualism. The factor motivating this change was two-fold: the desire to avoid antinomies associated with the notion of a universal collection and the desire to avoid the heresy of necessitarian pantheism. We document the changes in Can- tor’s thought with reference to his main philosophical-mathematical treatise, the Grundlagen (1883) as well as with reference to his article, “Über die verschiedenen Standpunkte in bezug auf das aktuelle Unendliche” (“Concerning Various Perspec- tives on the Actual Infinite”) (1885). I. he Philosophical Reception of Cantor’s Ideas. Georg Cantor’s dis- covery of transfinite numbers was revolutionary. Bertrand Russell Tdescribed it thus: The mathematical theory of infinity may almost be said to begin with Cantor. The infinitesimal Calculus, though it cannot wholly dispense with infinity, has as few dealings with it as possible, and contrives to hide it away before facing the world Cantor has abandoned this cowardly policy, and has brought the skeleton out of its cupboard. He has been emboldened on this course by denying that it is a skeleton. College, Ajmer, Rajasthan, India argue that science had some ideal commitments and that behaviouralism shared these ideal commitments of science. This thesis of the behaviouralists is not acceptable to the post-behaviouralists. They think that the technical research and scientific knowledge pursued by the behaviouralists should not be cut off from the realities of life. It should be related to vital social problems and aim at solving some problems. It is a reform movement of Behaviouralism which appreciates the work done by Behaviourailsts in developing tools, techniques and methods of research but wish that those should be used for the good of the society. -

Lobovikov1 APPLYING LOGIC TO PHILOSOPHICAL THEOLOGY: A FORMAL DEDUCTIVE INFERENCE OF AFFIRMING GOD’S EXISTENCE FROM ASSUMING THE A-PRIORI-NESS OF KNOWLEDGE IN THE SIGMA FORMAL AXIOMATIC THEORY For the first time a precise definition is given to the Sigma formal axiomatic theory, which is a result of logical formalization of philosophical epistemology; and an interpretation of this formal theory is offered. Also, for the first time, a formal deductive proof is constructed in Sigma for a formula, which represents (in the offered interpretation) the statement of God’s Existence under the condition that knowledge is a priori. Keywords: formal axiomatic epistemology theory; two-valued algebra of formal axiology; formal-axiological equivalence; a-priori knowledge; existence of God. 1. Introduction Since Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, Stoics, Cicero, and especially since the very beginning of Christianity philosophy, the possibility or impossibility of logical proving God’s existence has been a nontrivial problem of philosophical theology. Today the literature on this topic is immense. However, even in our days, the knot- ty problem remains unsolved as all the suggested options of solving it are contro- versial from some point of view. Some respectable researchers (let us call them “pessimists”) believed that the logical proving of God’s existence in theoretical philosophy was impossible on principle, for instance, Occam, Hume [1], and Kant [2] believed that any rational theoretic-philosophy proof of His existence was a mistake (illusion), consequently, a search for the logical proving of His existence was wasting resources and, hence, harmful; only faith in God was relevant and useful; reason was irrelevant and use- less. -

From Modernism to Messianism: Liberal Developmentalism and American Exceptionalism1 Following the Second World War, we encounter again many of the same developmental themes that dominated the theory and practice of imperialism in the nineteenth century. Of course, there are important differences as well. For one thing, the differentiation and institutionalization of the human sciences in the intervening years means that these themes are now articulated and elaborated within specialized academic disciplines. For another, the main field on which developmental theory and practice are deployed is no longer British – or, more broadly, European – imperialism but American neoimperialism. At the close of the War, the United States was not only the major military, economic, and political power left standing; it was also less implicated than European states in colonial domination abroad. The depletion of the colonial powers and the imminent breakup of their empires left it in a singular position to lead the reshaping of the post-War world. And it tried to do so in its own image and likeness: America saw itself as the exemplar and apostle of a fully developed modernity.2 In this it was, in some ways, only reproducing the self-understanding and self- regard of the classical imperial powers of the modern period. But in other ways America’s civilizing mission was marked by the exceptionalism of its political history and culture, which was famously analyzed by Louis Hartz fifty years ago.3 Picking up on Alexis de Tocqueville’s observation that Americans were “born equal,” Hartz elaborated upon the uniqueness of the American political experience.
