FC Internazionale Milano were given a shock when they were last at home in the UEFA Champions League, but victories in their last two games have taken the 2010 winners top of Group B and 's side will be looking for another success when LOSC Lille Métropole visit. • The first competitive meeting between the teams on 18 October ended in an Inter victory, Giampaolo Pazzini scoring the only goal in northern France. • Inter could scarcely have made a worse start to their campaign, group stage debutants Trabzonspor AŞ running out 1-0 winners at San Siro on matchday one, and there was more trouble next time out when a 2-0 lead disappeared at PFC CSKA Moskva. However, substitute Mauro Zárate struck late on to get his side off and running. • Lille surrended a two-goal lead on matchday one to allow visitors CSKA to rescue a 2-2 draw, Moussa Sow and Benoît Pedretti on target for the French champions. Two weeks later Sow was on the mark again at Trabzonspor with another clinical finish but again Lille could not hold on, conceding a late penalty to draw 1-1. Match background • One look at Inter's record against French opponents at San Siro will not fill Ranieri's team with confidence: they have lost three of the last five fixtures at home to Ligue 1 sides, winning only one. They went down 1-0 to Olympique de Marseille in the last home game, a 2003/04 UEFA Cup quarter-final, having lost the away leg by the same scoreline. • The Nerazzurri's last home match against French opponents in the UEFA Champions League ended in a 2-1 victory for Olympique Lyonnais in the 2002/03 first group stage. • Inter, participating in the competition for the 11th time, have qualified for the knockout rounds in eight of the last nine years. Last season they failed to become the first UEFA Champions League winners to successfully defend their crown, going out in the quarter-finals to FC Schalke 04, losing 5-2 at home and 2-1 in Germany. In the round of 16 they lost 1-0 at home to FC Bayern München before rescuing the tie with a 3-2 away win. In the group stage the Italian club won all three home games, scoring nine goals. • Lille went down 3-2 when they faced Genoa CFC in a 2009/10 UEFA Europa League group stage fixture, their last away game against a side. Before that they had won on all three previous visits, including a notable success in San Siro when they beat AC Milan 2-0 in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group stage, a result that secured a place in the knockout rounds for the first time. It was Les Dogues' first away victory in nine attempts in the group stage; five of their previous eight fixtures had been lost. • Lille's fourth participation in Europe's elite club competition followed last season's league and cup double in France. Team ties • David Rozehnal was a team-mate of Zárate at S.S. Lazio between January 2008 and June 2009. • Rozehnal scored in the penalty shoot-out against UC Sampdoria to help Lazio to victory in the 2008/09 final. Pazzini converted his spot kick for Sampdoria. • Túlio De Melo had a brief spell at US Città di Palermo in 2008 but played only one game, in the Coppa Italia. • Joel Obi and Vincent Enyeama are team-mates with the Nigeria national side. • Maicon made 59 Ligue 1 appearances for AS Monaco FC between 2004 and 2006, recording two wins and a draw in four games against Lille. • Joe Cole was a second-half substitute as Chelsea FC lost 1-0 at home to Inter in the UEFA Champions League round of 16 second leg on 16 March 2010, the Italian side completing a 3-1 aggregate victory.

FC Internazionale Milano: Claudio Ranieri Date of birth: 20 October 1951 Nationality: Italian Playing career: AS Roma, US Catanzaro, US Città di Palermo, Coaching career: Vigor Lamezia Calcio, Campania Puteolana, Cagliari Calcio, SSC Napoli, ACF Fiorentina, Valencia CF (twice), Club Atlético de Madrid, Chelsea FC, Parma FC, Juventus, AS Roma, FC Internazionale Milano • Ranieri played just six Serie A games for hometown club Roma before moving south to spend the remainder of his playing career with Catanzaro, Palermo and Catania. • Coached several lower-league teams before making his name with Cagliari, leading the Sardinian club from Serie C1 to Serie A between 1989 and 1991. Moved to Napoli, guiding the club to fourth place in the top flight in 1991/92 only to be sacked the following season. • Earned promotion to Serie A in his first season as Fiorentina coach, and won the Coppa Italia in 1996 before heading abroad. Won the Copa del Rey with Valencia in 1999 and then coached Atlético and Chelsea, whom he led to a second-place Premier League finish and the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League in 2003/04. • Replaced by José Mourinho, a brief, unsuccessful, spell back at Valencia followed before Ranieri rediscovered his touch in saving Parma from relegation in 2007. • That led to a stint at Juventus, who dismissed him in May 2009. Ranieri rejoined his first club, Roma, four months later, leading the club to second place in Serie A in his first season. However, he left in February 2011 only to return to coaching seven months later, signing a two-year contract with Inter.

LOSC Lille Métropole: Rudi Garcia Date of birth: 20 February 1964 Nationality: French Playing career: LOSC Lille Métropole, SM Caen, FC Martigues Coaching career: AS Corbeil-Essonne (player/coach), AS Saint-Étienne, Dijon FCO, Le Mans UC 72, LOSC Lille Métropole • The son of former Lille player José Garcia, Rudi grew up in the Paris suburbs but started his playing career as an attacking midfielder at his father's old club. Spent six years with Les Dogues, going on to Caen (1988-91) and Martigues (1991-92) before injury prompted a move into coaching. • Having completed a sports science degree, started out as a player-coach at amateur side Corbeil-Essonne, whom he had represented as a youngster; did well enough to be offered a job as assistant coach at St-Etienne in 1998. • Worked as head coach for the first time in tandem with Jean-Guy Wallemme from January 2001 but the pair did not last long. Garcia re-emerged as coach of Dijon in 2002, winning promotion to Ligue 2 in 2003/04 and taking the club to the French Cup semi-finals. • Spent five years at Dijon before returning to Ligue 1 as coach of Le Mans in 2007; led the club to a ninth-placed finish in his only season in charge. • Brought to Lille as Claude Puel's successor in 2008, he briefly left after a fifth-placed finish in his first season only to be brought back into the fold. His side topped Ligue 1 at the turn of 2011, making them winter champions for the first time since 1949, and went on to take their third league title – and first since 1954 – before completing a domestic double with victory in the Coupe de France.

UEFA Champions League: Group stage milestones • Holders FC Barcelona are bidding to avoid becoming the first defending champions to fail to get through a group stage since the UEFA Champions League began. (This record, like the others, includes the seasons between 1999/2000 and 2002/03 that featured a second group stage). • In 1992/93, Barcelona were the reigning European Champion Clubs' Cup holders and were beaten 4-3 on aggregate in the second round by PFC CSKA Moskva. • No team has successfully defended the UEFA Champions League trophy with AC Milan (1989, 1990) the last club to win consecutive European Cups. Milan (1994, 1995), AFC Ajax (1995, 1996), Juventus (1996, 1997) and Manchester United (2008, 2009) have all returned to the UEFA Champions League final as holders only to lose. • S.S. Lazio goalkeeper Marco Ballotta became the oldest player to compete in the UEFA Champions League in 2007/08 when he featured against Olympiacos FC on matchday one at the age of 43 years and 168 days. The record was previously held by Alessandro Costacurta, the AC Milan defender who played against AEK Athens FC in 2006/07 at the age of 40 years and 211 days. Ballotta was aged 43 years 252 days when he featured against Real Madrid CF on matchday six. • Ryan Giggs is the oldest player to score in the competition, aged 37 years and 289 days, in Manchester United's 1-1 draw at SL Benfica on 14 September 2011. • Celestine Babayaro is the youngest player to have appeared in the UEFA Champions League. He was 16 years and 87 days when he started for RSC Anderlecht against FC Steaua Bucureşti on 23 November 1994. He was then sent off in the 37th minute. • Peter Ofori-Quaye is the youngest player to have scored in the UEFA Champions League, aged 17 years and 195 days. He found the net in Olympiacos's 5-1 defeat at Rosenborg BK on 1 October 1997. • Barcelona and Manchester United FC have both finished as group winners on 12 occasions, one more than Real Madrid. • Four teams have recorded six successive victories in a UEFA Champions League group stage: Milan (1992/93), Paris Saint-Germain FC (1994/95), FC Spartak Moskva (1995/96) and Barcelona (2002/03, first group stage). • Twelve teams have gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without picking up a single point, including MŠK Žilina and FK Partizan in 2010/11. The other ten are: Maccabi Haifa FC and Debreceni VSC (2009/10), FC Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08), PFC Levski Sofia (2006/07), SK Rapid Wien (2005/06), Anderlecht (2004/05), Spartak Moskva and Bayer 04 Leverkusen (2002/03, first and second group stage respectively), Fenerbahçe SK (2001/02, first group stage) and 1. FC Košice (1997/98). • Manchester United scored 20 goals in the 1998/99 group stage, more than any other side has managed. Barcelona scored 19 times in the 1999/2000 first group stage. • MŠK Žilina conceded 19 goals in their six outings in 2010/11, equalling the record let in during a group stage set by Debrecen (2009/10), Dynamo Kyiv (2007/08) and Ferencvárosi TC in 1995/96. • No team has ever gone through a UEFA Champions League group stage without conceding a goal. Milan (1992/93), AFC Ajax (1995/96), Juventus (1996/97 and 2004/05), Chelsea FC (2005/06), Liverpool FC (2005/06), Villarreal CF (2005/06) and Manchester United (2010/11) all let in just one. • Before their 3-1 win against Sporting Clube de Portugal on matchday six of the 2006/07 campaign, Spartak Moskva went 22 games without a victory in the competition, surpassing the unwanted record set by AEK Athens FC on matchday three of the same campaign. • The lowest total for a team qualifying from the group stage is seven points. The first to do it, since three points for a win was introduced in 1995/96, were Legia Warszawa that same season before FC Dynamo Kyiv and Bayer 04 Leverkusen managed it in 1999/2000 and Liverpool in 2001/02. FC Lokomotiv Moskva and eventual finalists Juventus both progressed with seven points in 2002/03, a feat achieved by Rangers FC and SV Werder Bremen in 2005/06.
