There’s never been a marathon she hasn’t wanted to quit, said Ambard, 58, “but I keep taking those steps and push- ing through because I can’t let Phil’s killer have me, too. I won’t let terrorists break my spirit.” Running helped Ambard shed her fear of different cultures and come out of the protective shell that closed around her after her husband’s death. She also uses it to help others cope with tragedy.

BY STEVE BEYNON Stars and Stripes WASHINGTON — Some National Guard troops deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border are not being compensated with GI Bill benefits, despite conducting homeland security missions directed by President Donald Trump, according to advocates and lawmakers. “Thousands of National Guard service members are fulfilling their duty and re- sponding to a national emergency declared by President [Donald] Trump,” said Dan- iel Elkins, a Green Beret with 19th Special Forces Group and legislative director for the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States, an advocacy group for service members. Whether Guard members deployed to the U.S.-Mexico border are being properly compensated surfaced this week during a House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs hearing Wednesday. Maj. Gen. Prior to the hearing, Reps. David Roe, R-Tenn., and Gus Bilirankis, R-Fla., sent a letter to Defense Secretary Mark Esper expressing their confusion over whether soldiers deployed to the southern border are entitled to benefits, when other similar domestic missions awarded federal perks to National Guard members. “We are writing today to express our Texas Military Department concern that certain members of the Na- A Texas Guardsman and a Customs and Border Patrol agent discuss the lay of the land in April on the shores of the Rio Grande tional Guard deployed to the southern River in Starr County, Texas. border in support of Operation Guardian Support are not receiving active-duty ser- of national emergency, service members border are responding to a federal call to lose track of which soldiers are deployed vice credit towards Post-9/11 GI Bill eligi- were not entitled to earn Post 9/11 GI Bill action made specifically by the command- on what orders and the benefits they are bility,” the lawmakers wrote to Esper. benefits,” said Brandon Jones, a spokes- er in chief, and still, the vast majority of entitled to receive. BY KAREN DEYOUNG, DAN LAMOTHE, MISSY RYAN AND MICHAEL BIRNBAUM The Washington Post WASHINGTON — President Donald Trump was persuaded to leave at least sev- eral hundred troops behind in Syria only when he was told that his decision to pull them out would risk control of oil fields in the country’s east, according to U.S. officials. BY GREGG ELLMAN Tribune News Service ’ve often heard store employees say that there is no difference when it comes to the array of audio cables available on the market. I I beg to differ. I have found that audio cables, which provide the con- nection and the route by which the signal is transmitted, vary widely from the top of the line to dirt cheap. I recently tried a few cables from tech brand Austere’s new portfolio of home theater accessories, including iStock audio and video cables. As described by Austere, the HDMI-certifi ed cables maximize home theater experience, and come in three lengths including active HDMI at 5.0m for optimal visual and audio performance. The engine made by Hendrick Motors- ports failed just five laps in to the first of Saturday’s two practice sessions for the opening race in the third round of NAS- CAR’s playoffs. Elliott was pragmatic as the No. 9 team made the engine change that will send him to the back at the start of Sunday’s race. Elliott is now susceptible to dropping a lap down at NASCAR’s shortest track if his Chevrolet is not perfect at the start. The paperclip-shaped 0.526-mile oval takes under 20 seconds per lap, and the leaders could be on Elliott’s bumper in no time. “We broke a motor there, five laps in, and yeah, unfortunate way to start the day and it is what it is at this point,” Elliott said. “Starting in the back will be unfortunate /AP PHOTOS BY DAVID ZALUBOWSKI in the first stage, but there’s nothing I can Southern California wide receiver Michael Pittman Jr. dives into the end zone to score the go-ahead touchdown after pulling in a do now.” pass in front of Colorado safety Mikial Onu during the Trojans 35-31 win Friday night in Boulder, Colo.
