CBY COVID Safety Protocols In our ongoing efforts to provide a safe makom Tefilla and Torah for our community, the CBY Medical Committee continues to discuss the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, vaccine progress, and review our policies and procedures. We continue to emphasize that by working together and adhering to the following guidelines, we hope to ensure that our shul remains safe. 1. Health: No one with a fever or symptoms of COVID-19 may attend any event at CBY. COVID-19 symptoms are: • Fever or chills • New loss of taste or smell • Cough • Sore throat • Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing • Congestion or runny nose • Fatigue • Nausea or vomiting • Muscle or body aches • Diarrhea • New headache

2. Masking: Masking is required at all indoor and outdoor minyanim. Masks should cover both nose and mouth. 3. Seating Plans: Sections have been designated that will allow for vaccinated people (two weeks post their final shot) to sit in close proximity, albeit while masked in all of our minyanim. No one should feel obligated, even if vaccinated, to sit in those sections, but if you are comfortable please do. We ask any attendees who are not vaccinated to please continue to follow social distancing, leaving six feet between seats occupied by non-family members. There are blue stickers in the New Main sanctuary which indicate where people should sit to ensure a safe environment. In all other locations chairs are spaced appropriately; please do not move or add seats in these locations. In the tents we have put out chairs in groups of two to allow one chair for sitting and one for tallis/tefillin/chumash etc. 4. Ventilation & Duration: Efforts, including consultation with HVAC experts, have been made to ensure proper ventilation of the space. Masking, distancing, and ventilation reduce risk but do not eliminate it. Every individual who chooses to daven inside must be aware of this risk and signs are posted to this effect. We do suggest N95 masks for those individuals at increased risk as they are proven to be safer in most studies. 5. Avoid Crowding: While in shul, as well as while entering and exiting, congregants should maintain social distance. 6. Quarantine Guidelines: The Medical Committee is continually looking at COVID trends in our area, research related to vaccination, and CDC guidelines. With that in mind, please see below for the most recent update to our quarantine policies. • Those individuals who have received a COVID vaccine, beginning 2 weeks after the second dose of a two-dose vaccine or 2 weeks after the dose of a single-dose vaccine, will no longer need to quarantine due to exposure or travel (as long as they are asymptomatic). • Individuals who have previously tested positive for COVID will be exempt from quarantine due to exposure or travel (as long as they are asymptomatic) for up to 3 months from their positive diagnosis. • CBY will continue to require a 14-day quarantine for individuals following any known COVID exposure who does not meet the criteria identified in the above points. • CBY asks all individuals who do not meet the criteria identified above, to follow the Travel Guidelines from the State of NJ (available HERE) following return from travel outside the immediate area (NY, NJ, CT, DE, PA) which requires self-quarantine for 10 days after travel, or 7 days with confirmation of a negative PCR test on days 3-5. • Please note, any individual who is exhibiting symptoms of COVID, regardless if they have been vaccinated or previously tested positive for COVID, should remain home and consult their doctor. 7. COVID at CBY: In the event that a member or non-member tests positive, we will send out a communication to the entire shul with that information. We will not identify the member or non-member by name without their permission but will attempt to report where and when that person was at CBY. Each individual in that minyan should then reach out to their doctor to discuss their individual need for quarantine. We request that any person who attends CBY (whether indoor or outdoor) contact Elysia Stein ([email protected]) in a timely manner in the event that they test positive for COVID. We are trusting our members and other attendees to follow this practice. If you have any concerns related to a violation of this policy, please speak with the Gabbai of that minyan or please inform the shul office.

שבת אחרי מות- קדושים Shabbat Acharei Mot-Kedoshim

Teen Department – A Message from Rabbi Jonathan Schachter The Heart of the Torah Parshiyos Acharei Mos and Kedoshim thing to HaShem in this world is each of our souls, even more are at the center of Sefer Vayikra, and precious than individual mitzvos. Sefer Vayikra is at the center of The final passuk of the kedushas ha’adam section, appearing Chumash. It stands to reason then that in next week’s parasha, gives us the exception to the rule the main message of our two parshiyos mentioned above, and that is the mitzvah of kiddush HaShem. will reveal the message that stands at From the verse, “V’lo sechalelu es shem kodshi, v’nikdashti the very heart of Chumash. Let’s explore that message. b’soch Bnai Yisrael” (22:32), the gemara (Sanhedrin 74a) The overarching theme of Sefer Vayikra is kedusha, and it learns that on rare occasions, a Jew must be willing to sanctify can be divided into three branches, kedushas ha’makom, HaShem’s name with his / her life, and utilize the kedushas kedushas ha’adam and kedushas ha’zman. From the beginning ha’adam to glorify HaShem. This is what the Jewish of the sefer until the middle of parashas Acharei Mos, we learn communities courageously did during the Crusades, and we about the kedusha of the mishkan. We are taught to offer commemorate them, in addition to Rabbi Akiva’s talmidim, korbanos that will be favorably received, and to keep various during this time period of sefira. forms of impurity away from this sanctified space. The section The message we must take from our two parashiyos is that at culminates in the first of our two parashiyos, as the Torah the heart of Chumash is kedushas ha’adam. As we are already instructs the Kohen Gadol how to enter the Kodesh halfway through our build-up to mattan Torah, we must Hakadashim on Yom Kippur (Ch. 16) and then concludes with rededicate ourselves to the mission of maximizing that sanctity. the prohibition to offer sacrifices anywhere but the mishkan We must look to eliminate those behaviors which detract from (Ch. 17). that kedusha and enhance those actions which nurture that The section of kedushas ha’adam begins in Acharei Mos with kedusha. That is the hallmark of our nation, as a “mamleches the topic of the arayos (Ch. 18), so we know which unions will kohanim v’goy kadosh.” create humans with potential for kedusha and which won’t. This is followed by an entire parasha dedicated to the mandate “Kedoshim tihiyu” (19:2), and how the parasha’s various mitzvos will develop that kedusha. This theme is continued in next week’s parasha, where we discuss the unique kedusha of a subset of our nation, namely the kohanim. The third branch of kedusha, kedushas ha’zman, is introduced in the following parshiyos, as we learn about the Mo’adim (Ch. 23) and the Shemita cycle (Ch. 25). When we focus on the big picture, we realize that the theme of the middle sefer of Chumash is kedusha, and at the heart of it all is “Kedoshim tihiyu”, that all of us must strive to lead lives of kedusha! If this framework is correct, it is fascinating to examine the opening and closing pesukim of this section of kedushas ha’adam. The section begins in chapter 18, where the Torah urges us to place the mitzvos at the center of our lives, and live through them, va’chai bahem (18:5). However, the gemara (Sanhedrin 74a) teaches us that despite the great significance of each mitzva, HaShem does not want us to endanger our lives through the performance of a mitzva. “Va’chai bahem” – v’lo she’yamus bahem, says the gemara. Thus, if one needs to violate even Shabbos or Yom Kippur to save a life, that is what must be done. First comes “Va’chai” and then comes everything else. How appropriate is it then that these words introduce the section of kedushas ha’adam, as we see that the most precious Congregation Bnai Yeshurun Phone (201) 836 – 8916 Page 6 of 9 641 West Englewood Ave. Teaneck, NJ 07666 www.bnaiyeshurun.org
