Dr. Bill Ashley Vice-President for Student Affairs Director of Athletics
Dr. Bill Ashley, Vice President for Student Affairs at Southwest, is in his fourth year as Director of Athletics. He came to Summit in 2011 after five years at Hinds Community College.
The athletic programs at Southwest have made many strides during Ashley’s tenure as Director of Athletics. In 2015-16, the men’s basketball team claimed the MACJC state championship. The women’s basketball team made the MACJC state tourney and the NJCAA Region 23 tourney respectively for the third time and second time in four years.
The 2015-2016 softball team produced the best record in program history and made its first-ever appearance in the MACJC state playoffs. In 2015, the Bears baseball team made its first state playoff appearance in nine years.
The 2013-14 Lady Bears basketball team advanced to the MACJC State Championship Game where they were narrowly defeated by Jones County, which led to a hot performance in the NJCAA Region 23 Tournament where they also were the runner-up for the region championship, which led to a bid in the NJCAA national tournament in Salina, Kansas. Also, head coach Brent Harris was named women’s director of NJCAA Region 23.
On the academic side, numerous student-athletes have received national and state honors since 2013, including a total of 43 being inducted into the Phi Theta Kappa national honor society. The men’s basketball team was named the NJCAA Academic Team of the Year in 2015-2016 and came in second in 2014-2015. Also they were MACJC Academic Team of the Year in 2014-15 and 15-16. The baseball and softball teams were both named an NJCAA All- Academic Team in 2015-16 (the ninth straight year the softball program has received this honor).
The football program has seen the construction of a new press box and the bathrooms have been air-conditioned in John I. Hurst Stadium. Also the visitor’s grandstand has been expanded 2014-2015. Additional seating is currently being installed for the fall of 2016-17 and the addition of a visitor’s press box will add a special touch to the stadium. The sprinkler system was also replaced on the Monroe McElveen Field.
Advertising revenue from the sales of sponsorships on the football scoreboard has enabled the college to include a video board on the football scoreboard. The locker room has had new carpet added with custom made lockers installed. Also, an additional office and meeting room have been added. The former baseball locker room was converted into a spacious all-sports athletic training room. An additional irrigated practice field was completed at the end of the spring semester of 2016.
The underside of the home grandstand has been resurfaced to be more esthetically pleasing. After the 2016 season further modifications will be made to the home grandstand. Through the Bear Backers Booster Club, the football fieldhouse audio/visual needs were met in 2013-2014.
The SMCC Soccer stadium, complete with dugouts, a press box and permanent seating for fans, has been completed. The teams have also had locker rooms undergo renovation within the Student Activities Gymnasium. Our football program hosts a football camp for high school teams during the end of June which is ran by high school coaches. Also, the football program has hosted out of state high school teams’ summer camps.
New locker rooms were remodeled and put into service for both the baseball and softball teams in 2013-2014. Baseball and softball respectively have had coaches’ offices remodeled as well. New indoor batting cages have been placed in the PE Building/Athletic Practice Facility for baseball and softball and can be hoisted out of the way for multipurpose use of the basketball courts.
A new grandstand and a press box were installed for softball in 2013-2014 while baseball had a new field drainage system installed during the fall of 2015, a new outfield fence in the fall of 2012, in addition to new right field and left field fences completed inclusive of bull-pens for both the Bears and opponents prior to the 2015 season.
Page 3 2016 SOUTHWEST MISSISSIPPI COMMUNITY COLLEGE Also, the college’s final product of the QEP is a fitness center located in the facility with baseball and softball. As a result of the QEP the PE Building/ Athletic Practice facility has a new playing surface for both basketball courts complete with three-lane walking track. The racket ball courts were re- moved and the QEP fitness center was moved into this space. The fitness center serves students, faculty, and staff for a nominal charge for the fall and spring semesters. Further enhancements to the softball and baseball field will begin the fall of 2016 with the outfield fence for softball being moved back and a new scoreboard will be installed, in addition, modern lights will replace the existing lighting on both the baseball and softball fields. The baseball scoreboard will also have its artwork modified to add the college’s official athletic logo.
The varsity basketball gymnasium lobby has undergone a complete renovation during the fall of 2015. During the fall of 2013 new padding with the college athletic logo was added under both goals. New goals have been installed for the 2016-2017 school year. The Student Activities Gym has been renovated with new paint, carpet and new backboards were installed over the summer of 2016.
A native of Okolona, MS and a graduate of Pontotoc High School, Dr. Ashley was a two-year starter at offensive guard on the offensive line for Itawam- ba Community College. He helped lead the Indians to the MACJC football state championship in 1990 and was an Honorable Mention MACJC All-State selection (Honorable Mention) the same year.
In 1991, he was named MACJC 1st Team All-State, voted team captain and Most Valuable Offensive Lineman by his teammates. He was also named an MACJC All-Star after his sophomore campaign with the Indians. Also, he was selected to Who’s Who Among American Universities and Colleges.
Ashley played college football at Delta State University, graduating with a Bachelor of Business Administration degree in 1995 (with a minor in Econom- ics), where he was a two-year starter as an offensive guard for Delta State University head coaches Don Skelton (1992) and Todd Knight (1993).
In 1993, he was named to the All-Gulf South Conference Academic Team and received the Russ Hardin Memorial Award for Team Concept and Lead- ership. This accolade is awarded to the senior, community college transfer student-athlete who demonstrates the team concept by his/her leadership and loyalty to his/her teammates and coaches.
He began his coaching career in 1994 when he served as a graduate assistant football coach at Itawamba, under head coach Jay Miller, helping the school to an MACJC North Division title and playing for the MACJC Football State Title. He next served for two years as a graduate assistant football coach at Delta State under head coach Todd Knight. He also earned his MBA with an emphasis in economics.
In 1997, Ashley was hired at Mississippi Delta Community College where he spent the next nine seasons as an assistant football coach and instructor of Business Administration. As an assistant coach, he served under now-Director of Affiliated Services and MACJC commissioner Jim Southward (1997 -2002) and Jay Miller (2002-2005).
In 1997, Ashley coached the linebackers and the Trojans claimed the league’s MACJC North Division title and were runners up in the MACJC football state championship game. While Ashley was there Mississippi Delta also received the 1997-98 Hallbrook Award. The coaches were named the league’s MACJC Coaching Staff of the Year.
In 2001, Ashley became the offensive line coach. The Trojans led the MACJC in rushing and ended the year with a 9-2 record and, at 6-0, the MACJC North Division title. They were runners up in the MACJC state title game. The coaching staff, led by Southward, was again named MACJC Coaching Staff of the Year.
In 2003, Ashley was the defensive coordinator for the MDCC defense that led the MACJC in overall defense as the Trojan football team advanced to the first round of the MACJC state playoffs. Led by Jay Miller, the coaching staff was once again named MACJC Coaching Staff of the Year.
Dr. Ashley began his tenure at Hinds Community College-Raymond in 2006; Ashley served as Instructor of Economics, Director of The Transitional Program and Academic Chair of the Hinds Community College-Raymond Department of Business Administration. He was also a volunteer assistant football coach (2006-08) under J. Mike Smith where he coached the inside linebackers. He finished his career at Hinds during the spring of 2011 when Southwest Mississippi Community College named him Vice-President for Student Affairs beginning July 1, 2011.
In 2012, Ashley earned his Doctor of Philosophy degree from Mississippi State University.
Ashley and his wife, Anne Marie, are the parents of two children; Sarah, and Carter.

Tucker Peavey Head Coach Tucker Peavey is in his fourth season as the head football coach at Southwest. He works with the offensive line.
During his time as head coach, Peavey has seen 38 players sign to continue their collegiate career at a four-year school; six of those have gone to an NCAA Division 1 program. Eleven players have been named either 1st or 2nd Team All-State, four All-Region and 11 have played in the MACJC All-Star game. A member of the 2015 squad, Vincent Calhoun, was selected 2nd Team All-American.
Also, since Peavey’s arrival, the team’s facilities have undergone a major upgrade. The field house was modernized, with audio/visual equipment in place in each room, and two new offices added. The team’s locker room was also upgraded with new lockers and carpeting installed. In addition, a video scoreboard has been installed and a new press box erected.
On the academic side, the Bears have seen success with a total of 22 players from Peavey’s first two signing classes having been inducted into Phi Theta Kappa. Nineteen players have received academic honors from the National Junior College Athletic Association and Mississippi Association of Community and Junior Colleges.
Peavey, a Brookhaven native and 1980 graduate of Brookhaven High School, began his full-time coaching career at Petal High School in 1986 after two years as a student assistant at the University of Southern Mississippi. He graduated from USM in 1986 with a B. S. degree in Athletic Admin- istration and Coaching.
Following his stint at Petal, Peavey spent two years as a graduate assistant at LSU under Coach Mike Archer. His career then took him to Itawamba Community College, Episcopal High School (Baton Rouge, LA), Louisiana-Monroe, Louisiana-Lafayette and Pearl River Community College before he returned home to Brookhaven High School.
Peavey spent ten years (2001-11) as athletic director at BHS and was head football coach for nine (2001-10). Along the way, be became the all-time winningest coach in Panthers history by compiling an overall mark of 74-32. His team won the Class 4A state championship in 2004 and was the Class 5A runner-up in his final season at the helm.
After leaving Brookhaven, Peavey spent one year at USM before taking the job at Southwest.
He and his wife Leah Ann are the parents of four and grandparents of two.

Cameron Achord Special Teams/Wide Receivers/Recruiting Coordinator
Cameron Achord is in his fourth year as an assistant football coach at Southwest. He coaches the special teams and wide receivers and serves as the recruiting coordinator. A Brookhaven native and 2005 graduate of Brookhaven Academy, Achord graduated from Belhaven University in 2009 with a B. S. degree in Computer Information Science as well as Sports Administration.
A four-year starter at free safety for the Blazers, Achord served as a team captain in 2008 and 2009. He was a two-time Academic All-American honoree and twice named a Mid-South Conference Player of the Week. In addition, he was an All-Conference back in 2009 and an Honorable Mention back in 2007. In 2010, he participated in the NAIA Senior Classic. Kelby Bowman-Defensive Coordinator
Kelby Bowman is in his fourth year as the defensive coordinator for the Bears. He comes to Southwest from Madison Central High School where he coached linebackers and safeties the past two seasons.
A native of Brookhaven and graduate of Brookhaven High School, Bowman spent two years (1996-98) as a linebacker at Co-Lin before becoming a member of the first football team ever at Belhaven College (now University).
Graduating from Belhaven in 2000 with a B. S. degree in Sports Administration, Bowman received a Master’s in Physical Education from the University of West Alabama in 2003 and a Master’s in Education Administration from Grand Canyon University in 2013.
Bowman began his coaching career at Belhaven where he spent the 2000 season as linebackers coach. Next came a six- year stop at East Mississippi Community College where, at different times, he served as defensive coordinator and coached the running backs and linebackers. He spent the next four seasons (2008-11) as defensive coordinator at Brookhaven High School before moving to Madison Central.
Donald Dykes Defensive Backs
Donald Dykes is in his fifth year at Southwest as defensive backs coach. He came to Southwest from Glen- ville (WV) State College where he held the same position in the 2011 season.
A native of Hammond, LA, Dykes won numerous individual state track and field championships at Hammond High School and helped the Tornadoes win two team championships. He was also a 10-time All State Selec- tion and a one-time All American selection.
Dykes attended Southeastern Louisiana University where he was a four year letterman in both football and track and field. An eight0time All American in track and field, he won three national championships including two in the long jump. In 1977, he set a school and Louisiana state record with a long jump of 26’3” which was 17th best in the world. He was also an NAIA outdoor champion in the event.
As a member of the SLU football team, he blocked 12 kicks and had six interceptions. He graduated from SLU in 1988 with a B.A. de- gree in Criminology.
A third-round NFL draft pick by the New York Jets in 1979, Dykes played for the Jets from 1979-1981. His best season came in 1980 when he had five interceptions; that same year, he qualified for the Olympic trials in the long jump. He was traded to the San Diego Chargers in 1982 and signed by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers as a free agent in 1983. Later, he played for the Houston Gamblers and Jacksonville Bulls of the USFL.

DeMorrius Jones-Defensive Line
DeMorrius U. Jones is in his second year as defensive line coach at Southwest. He comes to the program from Jackson Prep where he spent three successful seasons as a defensive assistant.
A native of Laurel, Jones is a graduate of Jones County Junior College and Belhaven University. He played football at JC in 2006-07 and was a member of the 2007 squad the finished runners-up in the state championship game.
He also played football at Belhaven and graduated from the University in 2010 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Sports Administration (he is currently working toward a Master’s degree in Sports Science). He played in the 2010 NAIA Senior Bowl Classic and recorded a game-record eight tackles.
While at Belhaven, he served as a volunteer assistant linebacker/defensive line coach during spring training prior to his senior season.
After graduation from Belhaven, and a year in private business, he began his coaching career at Jackson Prep. During his three seasons with the Patriots, the team compiled an overall 37-4 record and won three straight AAA South titles as well as three straight overall state championships.
Jones and his wife, Delyse, have two sons-DeMorrius “Duece”, Jr., and Dawson.
Dominique Sullivan Wide Receivers
Taylorsville native Dominique Sullivan in his second year as a volunteer assistant for the Bears. He will be in charge of the wide receivers.
The MHSAA 2A Player of the Year in 2010, Sullivan graduated from the University of Southern Mississippi in 2014 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Interdisciplinary Studies. He was a four-year member of the Golden Eagles’ football team.
He began his coaching career in 2014, serving as the wide receivers coach at Long Beach (MS) High School.

The Bears gave their best performance of the season last week at Pearl River, putting up over 400 yards of offense, in a 31 -21 win. The team has a tough road ahead of them if they want to pull off the same feat this week against the visiting Mis- sissippi Gulf Coast Bulldogs.
The Bears enter the game at 2-4 overall and 1-2 in the MACJC South Division.
What will it take for the Bears to repeat their performance from last week? “I think we’ll have to play even better,” said head coach Tucker Peavey, “because Gulf Coast is a really good football team. We moved the ball offensively throwing it (against Pearl River), we didn’t have turnovers and I think the turnover issue if the biggest difference.”
Peavey said his team played hard at Pearl River “like they (do) every week” and did not make a lot of the mistakes they had made in past games.
The Bulldogs come to Summit experience what, for them, could be considered a down season. They are 3-3 overall (2-1 in the South) after last week’s 42-0 win over Mississippi Delta and are giving up 336 yards of offense per game.
Peavey said in order for his team to be successful against the Bulldogs, they cannot “turn the ball over, (they have to) make the plays that are there and be patient. They’re (the Bulldogs) are a very aggressive defense and whenever that happens, it creates big plays for one side or the other and we’ve just got to get our share of them.”
Peavey said the Bulldogs have “played some really good football teams that were playing really well at the time on offense and I think that’s what it’s going to take” and, for the Bears to win, they will have to do likewise.
Bears’ defensive coordinator Kelby Bowman said he would not consider the Bulldogs to be having a down year despite the fact that they are totaling only 122.3 yards through the air and 166.3 on the ground.
“They’re still making yards in other places,” Bowman said, “and they still have some good players and they’re always going to be good at what they do offensively and defensively. Although the numbers (on paper) may show one thing, when you look at them on film they’re still a very talented and explosive team.”
Bowman said his defensive approach will not change this week. “We’re facing a good opponent this week as we do week in and week out and we just have to make sure we’re ready for the task at hand.”
While the Bulldogs are averaging slightly more yardage on the ground than in the air, their leading running back (T’Rod Daniels-5’ 9”, 190) is recording only 61.8 yards per game. On the other hand, they have four receivers with 11 or more catches on the season. Will Bowman focus ever so slightly more on the pass this week?
“I think with some of these new offensive systems,” Bowman said, “you can’t put emphasis on one (aspect of the game) over the other. Teams like Gulf Coast have talent at running back and also have talent at quarterback and receiver so I think you just have to prepare and try to minimize what they do best.”
Bowman concluded his comments on the Bulldogs’ offense by saying “I think they have the ability to always go to the pass if the run’s not working and our kids just have to adjust during the game according to what they’re trying to do to us.”
