FROM YOUR PRESIDENT... DAVE LOUCKS This issue marks the end of another year in which the NHPA made some significant strides. To the member who doesn't get or read this Digest or didn't attend the World Tournament, little may be noticed other than their ringer percentage. However, the informed member realizes tht the Eau Claire W.T. was the largest in attendance and prize money paid. Utilizing the Proxy vote for the first time, delegates discussed and voted on a number of important issues that will affect the administration and play of Horseshoes in the years to come. To the NHPA Executive Council, Regional Directors, Committeepeople and all other hard working members of the National and State levels, I thank you. Your efforts and continued support is certainly appreciated. It was nearly two years ago in this column that I wrote of the importance of having informed, dedicated and supportive members working for our sport. It is particularly true when we basically have no paid staff or central office. Good workers are hard to find and even harder to replace because they leave behind a record that is difficult to equal. Such is the case as this year comes to a close. Two individuals who have given unselfishly are stepping aside. At the National level, I regret that our Sanctioned Club/League Director, Terrence "Doc" Dougherty will be unable to continue in that capacity. Doc, this year's recipient of the Stokes Award has given four dedicated years of service to the growth and improvement of the Sanctioned League program. Unfortunately, serious health problems dictate that Doc not continue. On behalf of the entire NHPA, I offer sincere thanks and appreciation for a job well done. At the State level, the Southern California Charter will be honoring a man who for 32 consecutive years has been an officer of that association. As Sec-Treas., Jim Weeks has been instrumental in the growth and direction of Horseshoe Pitching in that area. He won the 1959 California State Championship and is enshrined in both the State and NHPA Hall of Fame. Jim assisted in bringing two World Tournaments to Southern California and has been a fixture at all tournaments in his association. Congratulations, Jim, for setting an example that will be hard to follow.

DAVE'S COURT REPORT If you missed the 5th Annual Las Vegas Tournament at the Hacienda, you should be sorry. It has become the fun event of hte year for many pitchers who combine the excitement of Las Vegas with the opportunity to compete for some good prize money in this mixed handicap tournament. . . . The NHPA Executive Council met for a day prior to the Vegas Tournament, discussions of this meeting and the one in Eau Claire to be printed in a later Digest issue. . . . Your President and Secy/Treas took two days following Las Vegas to visit and review the Plesasanton facilities, site of the 1988 W.T. . . . States with more than one Charter are reminded to COMMUNICATE prior to holding your State Championships. Seems as though some members were surprised and unhappy with things being done differently when they arrived to play this year. Some latitude is allowed tournament officials but NHPA Rules do apply for this most important Sanctioned Event. . . . Most State Officers know about the NHPA complimentary card program. Each club can allow up to 14 non-members to pitch in tournaments for the year, one time each. THIS DOES NOT APPLY TO YOUR STATE CHAMPIONSHIP where a minimum participation in at least two prior sanctioned tournaments is recommended by the NHPA. . . . The Mid-Hudson Horseshoe Pitchers Assn. of Newburgh, NY, has done it again. Their 4th annual Horseshoe-A-Thon for Muscular Dystrophy raised $12,000 which was presented during the annual MDA national telethon. The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/December, 1987

3ftt jHsmortem It is with deep sadness that we report the sudden passing of Joseph M. Raico of Mentor, Ohio. Joe passed away on September 19, 1987, following a heart attack while playing his favorite sport—- shoes. He was a member of the Painesville Horseshoe Club, where he was a backbone and a leader. He designed the court layout for the home of the Painesville Horseshoe Club and recently completed electron- ic scoreboards after months and months of hard work. To his loving wife, Catherine, and his whole family, we extend sincere sympathy in the loss of their loved one.

The passing of Marvin "Mickey" Broughton of 991 Gultice Rd., Xenia, Ohio, has been received. He was very active in tournament play in the Ohio area and also as a winter resident in Florida. He was a long tiem subscriber to the News Digest and a member of the NHPA for many years. He is survived by his wife, A. Ellen, one daughter and one son. The sympathy of the NHPA is extended to his bereaved family.

Word has come in that Gerald "Doc" Maison one of Michigan's great horseshoe pitchers passed away from a heart attack having died in his sleep, August 16. "Doc" was Michigan state champions five times and played in many World Tournaments, and was a real competitor. He will be missed by his many friends and associates. The sympathy of the NHPA is extended to his family in their hour of sadness.

The Illinois Association suffered a loss of one of its many members in the passing of Lloyd Fuhrman of Quincy, Illinois, on October 5. He was a member of the NHPA and played in many of the tournaments in and around southern Illinois, including the Illinois state tournaments. He had pitched in the World tournament. He is survived by his loving wife, Sue, and two sons, Lloyd and Chad, and his mother and father and grandmother. The sympathy of the NHPA is extended.

Elden Damarin of 1536 Kettele, Peoria, Illinois, passed away on October 9th. He began pitching when he was 35 and progressed rapidly winning the Peoria city championship. He was a member of the Peoria club for many years and also the NHPA. He won the Illinois state championship in 1971. He was a veteran of World War II. He will be missed by a host of friends and remembered as a real competitor.

The Massachusetts Horseshoe Pitchers Association was saddened by the sudden passing of Francis Norman due to a heart attack. Franny was a very active member of the MHPA, participating in tournaments for the past several years. He was also the Captain of the Scandinavian Athletic Club Team and winner of the Heritage Tournament of Champions. Franny is survived by his wife, Ann, and two (2) daughters. He will be sincerely missed by all. HORSESHOE PALLADIUM The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/December, 1987

KOSO ELECTED TO HALL OF FAME A grand old gentleman of the game, Don Koso, is this year's electee into our NHPA Hall of Fame in the organizer category. Don has served many years in the midwest, and in Nebraska in particular, as a tournament director, promoter, state and club officer and NHPA regional director. He has worked with any schools and colleges to introduce our sport to the younger generation and has been instrumental in starting many new clubs. He helped organize the Nebraska State Hall of Fame and was elected into it as a charter member. Perhaps what Don is best known for, however, is his work as a dispenser of game related items. For many years, before the advent of our current game related distributorships, Don was the man who handled our NHPA game related items for the western half of the U.S. while Herb and Dorothy Pinch handled the eastern area. Along with his faithful wife June, Don traveled many miles to showcase horseshoe merchan- dise in as many places as possible, and, if he couldn't make it to your area, he shipped countless items out of his home in Falls City, Nebraska. It was this program that, for the first time, really got our NHPA merchandise into wide circulation and made it readily available to the entire NHPA membership. Don is still willing and able to work for the benefit of horseshoes and the NHPA. We thank him for his many years of hard work and congratulate him on his election and induction into the NHPA Hall of Fame.

HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE REPORT The NHPA Hall of Fame committee had a very successful meeting at Eau Claire during the World Tournament. We have formulated a list of procedures, guidelines, etc., that we hope to put in pamphlet form and circulate to the NHPA membership through NHPA charter officers. The pamphlet will explain the general structure of the Hall of Fame and its governing committee and will give specific details as to how the committee operates and how the membership can nominate deserving individuals. We are currently working on a revised list of candidates (eliminating names that have received few or no votes in recent year) and will publish a current list of nominees in a future issue of the Digest. For those who are interested in nominating someone right away, we are enclosing the following informa- tion. A) Category of Nominations. An individual can be nominated in any one of three categories: 1) Player; 2) Organizer; 3) Player- Organizer. B) Eligibility for nomination. Any person who has served and/or played our sport in outstanding fashion (at a national level) for at least ten adult years is eligible for nomination. Discretion is encouraged to ensure that the nominee performed before and/or served the entire NHPA membership and not just a small portion thereof. C) Procedure for nomination. An individual may be nominated for the NHPA Hall of Fame by an NHPA member, a group of NHPA members or by an NHPA affiliated club or charter. The nomination should include the current date, the name, age, address and family data of the nominee, the category of nomination, and a structured list of data of achievement by the nominee to verify and support the merit of the nomination. Fifteen copies of the nomination shall be sent to the Hall of Fame chairperson. (This is because there are fifteen members on the committee.) The current Hall of Fame chairperson si Barry Chapelle, 2716 S.E. 61st Ave., Portland, OR 97206.

A SALUTE TO PETE MOSBRUCKER OF NORTH DAKOTA

(SEE COVER PICTURE)

One of the many ventures of Pete Mosbrucker of Bowman, North Dakota, was the new horseshoe courts at the Flagstone Terrace Supper Club located east of Bowman, North Dakota, on Highway 12. Anyone coming down from Canada on Highway 85 and going east or west on Highway 12 can take rest stop and pitch a few shoes at Bowman, "Gateway to the Black Hills of South Dakota." Pete has already put on a Business Man's Tourney, where he had two pitchers from eight businesses in a Doubles round-robin tournament. He gave out first, second and third place trophies plus a participating trophy for each pitcher. He found this to be a good way to build up interest in our sport. He has put on pitching clinics at the local high school, where he had 5 classes of 30 to 35 students including girls show interest. He has been holding tournaments in Bowman since 1960. This year the Vern Piatt Doubles Memorial tournament finished its 17th year.

HERE AND THERE AT THE W. T. (PART 1) By GLEN PORTT It was the third time for Dale Lipovsky ... 3 World Championships! There is a small story here. When Dale won is first two, he pitched Ted Allen shoes. For certain reasons, he switched to another brand . . . had his troubles in '84 and '85 and did not enter in '86. This year he returned to 'ALLENS'. . . and won with an 82.2%. Do certain types of shoes make a difference? I have to believe they do after seeing the almsot unbelievable 88.2% pitched by 16 year old Sandy McLachlin and the 88.1% by Diane Cantin, the two Canadians who stole the show. . . both women breaking Phyllis Negaard's 84.1 % world record. The shoes used by Sandy are different and are pictured on page 28, August Digest. . . and they do have that nice sounding 'clunk'. . . rather than a 'ring' when they hit the stake. Is there a pitcher in the world who would not like to raise his/her average 20% in one year as Sandy did? She won the Junior Girls' World Championship in '86 with a 67.3%; the World this year with 88.2%. (I expect Ed Domey will be getting several orders!) Old pro Vicki Winston made a great try for her 11th world title by tossing 82.0% ... but ended up tied for third with Debbie Michaud behind the red hot Canadians who Isot only oen game to U.S. pitchers when determined Phyllis Negard defeated Diane Cantin. Yes, the Maple Leaf flew high. Sandy and Diane are to be congratulated for an outstanding performance. . . and for records which may stand for a long, long time. In any sporting event, there will always be a few complaints .. . some legitimate .. . some not. Overall, I thought the tournament went real well and our NHPA officers deserve a pat on the back. . . along with Curt and Martha Bestul, 1st V.P Al Lonning of Eau Claire, and old standbys Francis Asher and Ralph Dykes. Ralph made a jillion charts before the tournament even started. (In case you don't know, a jillion is several billion.) Susie Pritzlaff (the 'Ask Susie' lady) had an outstanding display of books and plaques on Wisconsin horseshoe pitching .. . from way back then to right up to now. Every state would do well to emulate this in some way... because a written history is what is needed. Too many of our past records are forever lost... and that is sad. Spearfish, South Dakota, for the '89 W.T.? Surprised? I was. In trying to analyze 'why' Spearfish rather than the Sports Paladium, I came up with 3 factors which might have influenced the voting: 1. The Black Hills area around Spearfish is a paradise for a family vaction . . . and what most pitchers are looking for is just that. . . because the W.T is the yearly family vacation trip for many. 2. A vivacious, charming young lady Spearfish made a good pitch and had the delegates laughing and in a good mood. 3. The delegates were looking forward to pitching in the Sports Paladium. When they found out the tournament would not be held in the Paladium but several miles away, some switched their votes. NHPA stars in their ascendency . . . Kevin Hollister, Alan Francis, and Nick Audette. 16 year old Nick pitched in the Men's Division and came up with a creditable 71.8%. This was Alan's initiation into the men's class and he came through with a 74.8. Next year could be the year for either Kevin or Alan. (Part II of this "mellerdramer" will continue in the next issue.) 10 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/December, 1987

JIM LEWIS UNDEFEATED IN NEW YORK STATE TOURN. RUTH HANGEN RETAINS LADIES TITLE—JON WINNE TOPS BOYS—TERRI WARTERS WINS GIRLS—SANCTIONED Jim Lewis of Hudson Falls won all seven of his games despite finishing with the fifth-highest percentage to capture the 57th New York State Horseshoe Pitching championships over Labor Day weekend. Lewis, a 32-year-old glazier who tied for second a year ago, averaged 67.7 percent while turning back three former state champions in the eight-man men's championship class at the Floyd Horseshoe Club courts. In the women's division, Ruth Hangen of Getzville maintained her supremacy with a 7-0 record and 72.1 percentage. The competitive highlight of the tournament came in the junior boys' division, where Jon Winne of Glens Falls upset recently crowned world champion Kipp Barody of Gansevoort in a game that went 104 shoes. Winne, who trailed 36-16 after 80 shoes, threw 23 of the next 24 shoes for ringers and won, 40-37. He averaged 86 percent, including 36 doubles. Barody averaged 80 percent, with 35 doubles. Winne finished 4-0 in the division, with a 73.1 percentage. Barody (3-1, 75.7) was a two-time defending champion. In the men's division, Lewis earned his chance to compete in the top eight only after qualifying by three- tenths of a percentage better than the No. 9 position. Then he proceeded to take early leads in every game and win them all by at least six points. "I was really fortunate to get those good starts," Lewis said. "With the low qualifying round, I came in really not expecting to win. Past years I'd been averaging 75,76, 77 percent and expected to win, but didn't. This time I didn't figure I had a chance." Instead, Lewis turned back four-time champion Mike DiMartino of Churchville, 40-34, three-time champi- on Art Tyson of Mount Vernon, 40-33, and 1978 champion Joe Schultz of Brentwood, 40-31. "The first 10 or 20 shoes, I jumped right ahead of everybody," Lewis said. "That made the difference. I didn't feel the pressure to have to come from behind." Lewis' other close game came against clubmate John Bogardus of Fort Edward, 40-32. "First time I've beaten John all year," Lewis said. "I guess that told me something." 28 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/December, 1987

NEW YORK STATE—(Continued) Lewis' percentage was 67.7 for the seven games, the lowest by a New York state champion in 48 years. Carl F. steinfeldt won the first of his 22 New York state titles with a 64.2 percentage in 1939. DiMartino held the tournament's high percentage at 75.3 but lost two games, to Lewis and Tyson. Hangen received relatively little pressure in winning her second straight state title, and 13th overall (7-0, 72.1). Her closest game came against runner-up Traci Warters of Camden. Eleven-time state champion Lorraien Thomas of Lockport tied with Warters for second (5-2, 62.0). In the junior girls division Warters' sister, Terri, won four of five games for the title with a 12.1 percentage. The state association honored former boys' champion Robert Pike of Canton with a plaque, commemo- rating his five straight boys' titles (1980-84) and a tournament record 77.3 percentage set in 1983 at Falconer. The tournament attracted 279 entries, far short of the record 341 who entered the state tournament in 1985, also at Floyd. No bids were received for the 1988 site, placing the 58th tournament in doubt. Three men were inducted in the state Hall of Fame—Leo Ouelette of Brooklyn, John Ruston of Syracuse and William Walker of Utica. They join 42 other in the Hall since its inception in 1974.
