  • Dining with Anna and Friends
Dining with Anna and Friends This list of restaurants, bars, delis, and food stores are related in one way or another to The Tales of the City (books and/or films) as well as to The Night Listener. They are grouped by neighborhoods or areas in San Francisco. Some have already been included in existing walking tours. More will be included in future tours. Many establishments – particularly bars and clubs – featured in Armistead Maupin’s books have since closed. The buildings were either vacant or have been converted into other types of businesses altogether (for example, one has been turned into a service for individuals who are homeless) at the time this list was created. For these reasons, those establishments have not been included in this list. As with the rest of the content of the Tours of the Tales website, this list will be periodically updated. If you have updates, please forward them to me. I appreciate your help. NOTE: Please do not consider this list an exhaustive list of eating/drinking establishments in San Francisco. For example, although there are several restaurants listed in “North Beach” below, there are many more excellent places in North Beach in addition to those listed. Also, do not consider this list an endorsement of any place included in the list. The Google map for this list of eating establishments: Dining with Anna and Friends. • The Queer" Third Species": Tragicomedy in Contemporary
The Queer “Third Species”: Tragicomedy in Contemporary LGBTQ American Literature and Television A dissertation submitted to the Graduate School of the University of Cincinnati in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department English and Comparative Literature of the College of Arts and Sciences by Lindsey Kurz, B.A., M.A. March 2018 Committee Chair: Dr. Beth Ash Committee Members: Dr. Lisa Hogeland, Dr. Deborah Meem Abstract This dissertation focuses on the recent popularity of the tragicomedy as a genre for representing queer lives in late-twentieth and twenty-first century America. I argue that the tragicomedy allows for a nuanced portrayal of queer identity because it recognizes the systemic and personal “tragedies” faced by LGBTQ people (discrimination, inadequate legal protection, familial exile, the AIDS epidemic, et cetera), but also acknowledges that even in struggle, in real life and in art, there is humor and comedy. I contend that the contemporary tragicomedy works to depart from the dominant late-nineteenth and twentieth-century trope of queer people as either tragic figures (sick, suicidal, self-loathing) or comedic relief characters by showing complex characters that experience both tragedy and comedy and are themselves both serious and humorous. Building off Verna A. Foster’s 2004 book The Name and Nature of Tragicomedy, I argue that contemporary examples of the tragicomedy share generic characteristics with tragicomedies from previous eras (most notably the Renaissance and modern period), but have also evolved in important ways to work for queer authors. The contemporary tragicomedy, as used by queer authors, mixes comedy and tragedy throughout the text but ultimately ends in “comedy” (meaning the characters survive the tragedies in the text and are optimistic for the future).

  • Prodigals in Love: Narrating Gay Identity and Collectivity on the Early Internet in China
Prodigals in Love: Narrating Gay Identity and Collectivity on the Early Internet in China by Gang Pan A thesis submitted in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto © Copyright by Gang Pan 2015 Prodigals in Love: Narrating Gay Identity and Collectivity on the Early Internet in China Gang Pan Doctor of Philosophy Department of East Asian Studies University of Toronto 2015 Abstract This dissertation concerns itself with the eruption of a large number of gay narratives on the Chinese internet in its first decade. There are two central arguments. First, the composing and sharing of narratives online played the role of a social movement that led to the formation of gay identity and collectivity in a society where open challenges to the authorities were minimal. Four factors, 1) the primacy of the internet, 2) the vernacular as an avenue of creativity and interpretation, 3) the transitional experience of the generation of the internet, and 4) the evolution of gay narratives, catalyzed by the internet, enhanced, amplified, and interacted with each other in a highly complicated and accelerated dynamic, engendered a virtual gay social movement. Second, many online gay narratives fall into what I term “prodigal romance,” which depicts gay love as parent-obligated sons in love with each other, weaving in violent conflicts between desire and duty in its indigenous context. The prodigal part of this model invokes the archetype of the Chinese prodigal, who can only return home having excelled and with the triumph of his journey.

Garréta, Supervisor, Chair ___________________________ Robyn Wiegman, Co-Chair ___________________________ Rey Chow ___________________________ Anne Allison An abstract of a dissertation submitted in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Graduate Program in Literature in the Graduate School of Duke University 2018 Copyright by Jui-an Chou 2018 Abstract “Between Boys: Fantasy of Male Homosexuality in Boys’ Love, Mary Renault, and Marguerite Yourcenar” examines an unexpected kinship between Boys’ Love, a Japanese male-on-male romance genre, and literary works by Mary Renault and Marguerite Yourcenar, two mid-twentieth century authors who wrote about male homosexuality. Following Eve Sedgwick, who proposed that a “rich tradition of cross- gender inventions of homosexuality” should be studied separately from gay and lesbian literature, this dissertation examines male homoerotic fictions authored by women. These fictions foreground a disjunction between authorial and textual identities in gender and sexuality, and they have often been accused of inauthenticity, appropriation, and exploitation.

  • Gay and Lesbian Literature in the Classroom: Can Gay Themes Overcome Heteronormativity?
Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education University of North Texas University of North Texas Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education Sanders and Mathis: Can Gay Themes Overcome Heteronormativity? Historically, lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) characters did not exist in the texts read and discussed in classrooms. One reason for the lack of classroom exposure to literature with homosexual themes could be contributed to avid censorship of such books. Daddy’s Roommate (1990) by Michael Willhoite was the second most banned/challenged book between 1990-2000, and Heather has Two Mommies (1990) by Leslea Newman ranked ninth as being the most banned/challenged in that decade. During the next decade both titles were not as fiercely contested. Willhoite and Newman’s book did not appear on the list of the 100 most banned/challenged books; And Tango Makes Three by Justin Richardson and Peter Parnell was the only book in the top ten contested books with gay and lesbian themes. Even though censorship continues to occur with LGBT books published for children, the books are not listed in the top ten censored books as often as a decade earlier. In order to fight censorship and prejudice surrounding LGBT literature, young readers as well as teachers and parents must learn how to transform their views of LGBT people. Educational organizations have realized the need for such a change in the classroom and have made a call for action; the National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) passed a resolution (2007) calling for inclusion of LGBT issues in the classroom in addition to providing guidelines for training teachers on such inclusions.

Abstract In recent years, research on adolescent sexuality in Young Adult (YA) Literature has included a discussion of its potential role in sex education. Based on the extensive yet problematic presentation of sexuality within these texts, it has gained both support and opposition. I'm a librarian here and I have just a few words before we get started. This program today is sponsored by the Seattle Public Library Foundation, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The foundation is made up of thousands of people in our community who give gifts, large and small to support our libraries. To all of the foundation donors who are here with us today. Thank you so much for your support. I would also like to recognize and thank The Seattle Times for their continued support for programming at the Seattle Public Library. We are delighted to be partnering with Seattle Pride Fest on this program. Also, thanks, go to the Elliott Bay Book Company for coordinating the book sales here this afternoon. As I said earlier, if you don't have all of his books, they can fix that for you. And if you do have all of his books. Think what a joy it would be to give those books to somebody else. Maybe if a fresh new set.
