LAW FIRM/LEGAL ORGANIZATION INCLUSIVENESS@WORK AWARD FINALISTS

Dorsey & Whitney Dorsey & Whitney LLP has several programs that create a culture of inclusivity, such as a flexibility program for those attorneys who want an arrangement that allows for both the practice of law and to devote time to familial responsibilities. The firm has its first full-time Diversity and Inclusion Manager, whose exclusive responsibility is managing the firm’s equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) initiatives. Each office has a Diversity Inclusion Liaison, who is charged with implementing the firm's EDI policies at the local level. Dorsey allows attorneys to apply a certain number of hours working on EDI efforts to the billable hour requirement. Dorsey conducts “upward evaluations” where partners are rated by their associates and key staff; the outcome of these evaluations plays a key role in partner compensation. Finally, Dorsey has made Juneteenth an annual firm holiday.

Holland & Hart LLP In 2020, Holland & Hart LLP hired their first Chief Diversity and Inclusion Officer, further demonstrating their commitment to equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI). All attorneys at Holland & Hart are required to engage in a minimum of 25 EDI training hours per year. EDI efforts are a factor in every attorney’s compensation – including partners. Each practice group has a Diversity Lieutenant to ensure firm-wide initiatives are maintained at every level. Holland & Hart is one of the few national law firms participating in an innovative pilot program with Thine, a new technology that endeavors to eliminate bias and inconsistencies in the recruiting and evaluation process. These assessment results are then used as additional data points to provide a more holistic representation of candidates.

WilmerHale WilmerHale has created an innovative “Executive Diversity and Inclusion Committee” (EDIC) chaired by co-managing partners. The EDIC represents a chain of accountability starting at the top that extends firm-wide. Five full-time employees work exclusively on equity, diversity and inclusivity (EDI) issues. Each regional office has its own Diversity Committee to meet its local needs. In support of those committees there is also an umbrella Diversity and Inclusion Committee rendering resources to those heavily involved in EDI efforts throughout the firm. In response to the recognition of systemic racism, WilmerHale was ahead of the game by establishing a Racial Justice Reform Team, and has devoted over 20,000 hours of legal work to its cause. The firm has mandatory EDI trainings, starting at the summer associate level. Finally, WilmerHale directly ties partnership compensation to fulfilling their EDI responsibilities. Judge Wiley Daniel Lifetime Achievement Award Winner The Honorable Christine M. Arguello

"I believe that Judge Arguello embodies inclusion more than anyone I know. Her journey started with humble beginnings, built upon success after success, and continues to this day. At each step, she forged a trail that others have been able to follow, and she has shared her time and wisdom with countless attorneys. As a federal judge, she does not have to devote her energy to these causes, does not have to pause to encourage diverse young students to pursue their dreams, and does not have to work to make the legal system better, fairer, and more equitable. But she does . . . and that says everything about her." ~ Patrick O'Rourke, 2019 CLI Board Chair, and Executive Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer for the University of Colorado Boulder

The Honorable Christine M. Arguello has a degree in Elementary Education from CU - Boulder with Special Honors and number one in her class. She was the first Latina from Colorado to be admitted to Harvard Law School and her career included partnerships at two private law firms, Holland & Hart LLP and Davis Graham & Stubbs LLP. She was Chief Deputy Attorney General of Colorado and Managing Senior Associate Counsel at CU Boulder, and a tenured full professor at the University of Kansas School of Law. Judge Arguello was sworn in as a Judge of the United States District Court for the District of Colorado in 2008. Judge Arguello has been a Board Member for the Center for Legal Inclusiveness, the Colorado Women’s Bar Association Foundation, the Colorado Hispanic Bar Association, and the Stapleton Development Corporation. She has received numerous honors including the 2015 Lifetime Achievement Award, Colorado Hispanic Bar Association, and 2014 Inductee, Colorado Women’s Hall of Fame.
