Shaye Cohn – Shaye’s musical heritage is impressive, and perhaps goes some way to explain her extraordinary talents as a musician (trumpet/cornet, , violin), arranger, composer, artist, and I suspect, quiet power which holds the band together. Granddaughter of Al Cohn, saxophonist with Woody Herman etc. and Marilyn Moore, singer, and daughter of Joe Cohn, guitarist etc., Shaye originally trained as a classical

2 Who is Tuba Skinny?

Tuba Skinny is one of the best groups in America playing the music of the 20s and 30s which contributed greatly to bringing the Jazz to people all over the world. Formed in 2009, Tuba Skinny has steadily evolved from a loose collection of street musicians into a solid ensemble dedicated to bringing the traditional New Orleans sound to audiences around the world. Drawing on a wide range of musical influences—from spirituals to Depression- era , from to traditional jazz—their sound evokes the rich musical heritage of their New Orleans home. The band has gained a loyal following through their distinctive sound, their commitment to reviving long-lost songs, and their barnstorming live performances. They've released seven albums. Offbeat Magazine awarded their album Owl Call Blues recognition as the best traditional jazz album of the year in 2014. This award is given only to musicians, and was first established in 1994. The band's name is a tribute to the tuba player Anthony Lacen who was better known as Tuba Fats. He was a founding member of the Dirty Dozen , one of New Orleans' most prominent brass rhythm bands. He died in 2004. Musically, Tuba Skinny mines a rich seam of traditional jazz and blues from the '20s and '30s. And, while it's evident the band treasures the sense of history evoked by these vintage tunes, the players' natural exuberance makes the music feel irresistibly alive. Erika Lewis' vocals have a wonderfully earthy quality, her phrases often pulling behind the beat with a languid, world-weary drawl. On the instrumental numbers, Cohn's cornet outlined the melody and also engaged in spirited three-way conversations with Barnabus Jones' trombone and Jon Doyle's agile clarinet. Washboard player Robin Rapuzzi frolicked on the sidelines, his rhythmic explorations as captivating to watch as they were to listen to – even when the band was temporarily upstaged by a troupe of swing dancers, who launched into an athletic routine peppered with break-out solos and acrobatic air steps, offering a physical manifestation of the joy Tuba Skinny seem to bring with them wherever they go. Their music has been praised by music critics for its originality and technical competence. One review of their 2014 performance at the Melbourne Music Festival captured the quality of their music well.

6 Testimonies: STEVE DIXON from California : I came across this article. It is rather long, and appears to have been written in 2009. However, it gives a good background on the Traditional Jazz musicians that we see in the Youtube videos, including Shaye (piano/cornet), Barnabus Jones (trombone), and Todd Burdick (tuba). Much of the article describes the Loose Marbles, a loose band around which many of these musicians originally gravitated. The author states, "I’ve also known Shaye for several years. She lived in at a time when most of my friends there were playing in noise-rock bands, and was definitely the only person I knew who could sight-read Gershwin, or Chopin. Like Ben, she comes from jazz lineage. Her grandfather, Al Cohn, was, Shaye says, a “slightly famous” tenor sax player and big-band arranger. Her parents are both jazz musicians, her father a jazz guitarist and her mother a singer and piano player originally from Japan. The bebop and modern jazz she heard around the house growing up failed to move her. “I just wasn’t interested,” she says. Having played piano from early childhood and reached concert-level by the time she graduated from , Shaye felt compelled to follow her own path. She took up the , and later the trumpet; she, like Todd, took to the rails, playing music wherever she went. This past winter she traveled through Turkey and Greece, playing with the unfortunately-named Cyclowns, an international group of circus performers and gypsy-jazz musicians who in 2006 toured across Asia to on tall-bikes. But she seems to have found a true calling in playing traditional New Orleans jazz. Out on the corner, playing the Marbles’ well-worn street-piano—it’s painted green and purple, and covered in stickers—she seems absolutely at home. Like Todd, she offers a simple, musical explanation for her love of traditional jazz. “These songs still have the capacity to move people,” she says. “To make people feel something.” Barry Wagner was in NOLA a couple of weeks ago on one of our many pilgrimages / retreats and finally got to hear Tuba Skinny busking on Royal and St. Peters "LIVE". what a treat. i have followed them for years via CD's and Facebook. just never got to hear them when we were in town. Tuba Skinny is the "Real Deal". as a traditional jazz trombonist, i have studied and played for over fifty years. these folks have it down pat. such a pleasure to hear musicians keeping traditional jazz and blues music alive in the New Orleans style. each musician is a tremendous talent. their music just "feels" right and makes you happy. this is one of the last few bands keeping the true style alive, unlike some of the other stuff you may hear in NOLA. long live Tuba Skinny and thanks for what you do

7 boingboing.net Tuba Skinny : Old timey blues and jazz street act from New Orleans Last week, I caught Tuba Skinny opening for the Dresden Dolls in New Orleans -- heard them busking in the French Quarter and invited them out to the show. I got both of their CDs and have been enjoying the hell out of them ever since: this is old timey blues and jazz with an emphasis on standards, arranged with a prominent horn section (as the name implies) and mostly sung by Erika Lewis, who belts it out like Mae West. The band was adorable -- extras from The Little Rascals, and they were as fine to hear live as they are on their CDs, Six Feet Down and Tuba Skinny. The former contains an original track, also called "Six Feet Down," credited to Erika Lewis, that is a really fine song that sounds as good as any of the tried-and-true standards like "At the Jazz Band Ball" and "Ain't Gonna Give Nobody None of My Jelly Roll" that fill out the rest of the disc.

CANDCJ sur Youtube Top Deck this wonderful warm and sunny afternoon onboard Paddle Steamer The Natchez, before cruising down and up the mighty Mississippi, Tuba Skinny made their first appearance on the River. Quoting from Steamboat Stomp's presentation: "Tuba Skinny came together in New Orleans in 2009 as a loose collection of street musicians and has since evolved to a fully formed professional band. Their unique sound evokes the rich musical heritage of New Orleans from the early jazz and blues and the twenties and thirties, ragtime, and traditional jazz. The band consists of tuba, trombone, cornet, tenor banjo/guitar, vocals, washboard, and occasionally clarinet. The band has gained a loyal following through their distictibe sound, their commitment to reviving long-lost songs, and their barnstorming live performances." Patrick O'Brienil Love the guy on the washboard wonderful rhythm & timing. They all make a wonderful sound.I am sure if the musicians from the early 20th Century could hear them they would heartily approve. Gene Parrish Wow! Where have I been? Just heard Tuba Skinny for the first time today on You Tube. They're so unique - no words to describe! It's & novelty rolled into one. Wish I didn't live so far away from New Orleans. Mike Tabecki The music of this band is so uplifting & it just makes me want to haul up my old bones & dance with my wife. I just love it! It would be a delight if you are able to tour the UK sometime in the future. Over & out. Bill Keen Shaye has Tuba Skinny playing to perfection. Without a doubt the best dixie land band playing today. Do miss Erica Lewis vocals though.  Steve Dixon Pops Coffee writes in his blog: "Tuba Skinny have introduced a beautiful slow-paced song, Owl Call

8 Blues, to their repertoire. It is gloriously sung by Erika Lewis. The melody was written by Shaye Cohn and the lyrics by Erika herself. What a team!" Harry de Raat Hello Erika, thanks a lot for let me be a part of your "music family". I hope to enjoy along time from your beautifull sound. Greetings, Harry de Raat, the Netherlands. Derek Winters Have followed your music for some time and just a great pleasure to meet and to hear you live live on the Street corner in April this year. Best wishes from the UK Kent Storm I realy like your music and go on rocking the world with it.In my opinion do the Tuba Skinny Jazz band express pure unpretentious musical joy, talent and brilliance. The mix of different musical personalitys makes an expression wich feels fresh, happy, and alive possible. It is not a blend of totily clinical and boring perfect music. It is a blend that makes the expression more than perfect, in my eyes. More directly in contact with the listener, wich conveys both brilliant teknic, generosity and a big heart. So take care of you all as a group. It is you all together that makes you totily wonderful. Rich Aguilar I have been an avid follower of Tuba Skinny since 2012. They have brought a ton of happiness to me over that time. They are my absolute favorite Jazz Band and I look forward to seeing them live soon. Wayne Huttoe This band is the best. I went to New Orleans last year and really liked the music in the streets. When I got home I saw Tuba Skinny on YouTube. Now I can't stop watching. Edie O'Connell Happy to hear historical music staying alive. Great job, great music. Possibly the best. Sakari Oksanen Great music! Hope to see you in Europe one day. Greetings from Finland. Steve Miller Saw you the other night s The Maison, & I was really impressed! I used to work every now & then for Squirrel Nut Zippers @ Tremont Music Hall in Charlotte, and while I'd like to compare them to you , I just can't...... Youre way better than SNZ. Even my 15 year old son admitted you guys were awesome! Oswald Dorn Ich liebe diese Musik, jeden Abend zieh ich mir ein paar Titel von Euch rein Clément Bourgeon Nothings better than Tuba skinny !!!

9 Jack Livings Great sound true to the Music. Pleasure to listen to. Tubof Closs My favorite band! Your music is my medicine! I want to go back to New Orleans! “Still mining the early jazz, blues and ragtime that have made them local favorites, this New Orleans combo is not only reaching further into the archives but also polishing originals that fit nearly seamlessly into the catalogue.

... the strength of these young trad jazz players remains their ensemble work. In tune after tune, the core instrumental sextet nails the classic New Orleans contrapuntal collective improvisation, instantly evoking another era while at the same time delightfully of the moment.” — CLEA SIMON (OFFBEAT, APRIL 2016) Blue Chime Stomp RELEASED FEBRUARY 27, 2016

12 “To call Tuba Skinny revivalists would be to miss the point. The New Orleans ensemble, often seen busking on Royal Street, have never conceded the death of the early jazz and blues they play... That’s a tribute to the masterful ease of these relatively young musicians who laze and weave around each other as if bebop never happened. Alternating solos and call- and-response vocals on this, their sixth release, the eight players here show a comfortable fluency in their pre-1940s idioms.” — CLEA SIMON (OFFBEAT, OCTOBER 2014)

Their take on rarely recorded songs such as the sly come-on “Papa’s Got Your Bath Water On” or Skip James’ cold-blooded murder ballad “Crow Jane” are poignant, yet fun... kudos to Tuba Skinny for getting some of the great yet lesser-played songs of the New Orleans repertoire (particularly the tunes including “New Orleans Bump”) back into action.” — DAVID KUNIAN (OFFBEAT SEPTEMBER 2012)

Jean Pierre de Smet and René Chalandon have consecrated their lives to their passion for Dixieland and Traditional Jazz. Both of them fell in love with Tuba Skinny when they heard them for the first time in 2010. They have got together to organise an European Tour in France, Belgium and the Netherlands.

Jean-Pierre De Smet has been organizing gigs in Belgium since 1955, over thirty trips to New Orleans and has written several books on the city. He plays the clarinet and has a Facebook page on the instrument.. [email protected]

René Chalandon discovered this music a bit later, when he heard the PRESERVATION HALL JAZZ BAND in Nice in 1976. He joined an Association to organise gigs for European musicians in the Lyon area, then in 1981 created his own Association JAZZOGIE to import discs of New Orleans Jazz and organize gigs and trips to festivals of this type of music. The next project is the JAZZ AND HERITAGE FESTIVAL 2018 in New Orleans which he is organizing for the 11th time. [email protected]
