From Bedfont & Feltham FC Manager Adam Bessent:

Good afternoon everyone and welcome to The Orchard. I hope our match officials and all associated with Chessington & Hook enjoy their short stay with us.

A break from the league this past Tuesday as we entertained Tooting Bec in the Premier Challenge Cup. It was a chance for us to look after some players and give others some game time. We started the game very well, playing some of the best football we've seen this season but we didn't take advantage on the scoresheet and Tooting grew into the game. Their shape and style of play gave us some good tests throughout the night and if it wasn't for David having a brilliant performance between the sticks we could've gone out at the first hurdle. However, a clean sheet, no new injury concerns and through to the next round.

Turning our attention to today, Chessy have picked up some good results so far this year, so it will be a difficult test. We will have to improve from Tuesday if we want to maintain our unbeaten start to the season.

I hope you enjoy the game, thank you for your support.

Adam.

Game of The People

Football Media Watch: The weight of expectation on Spurs

A FEW years ago, just being in the UEFA Champions League would have been enough for Tottenham, but now, several seasons into “project Pochettino”, there is a certain expectation that Spurs can “do things” in the competition. They’re in a tough group that also includes Barcelona and PSV Eindhoven, as well as this week’s opponents, Inter Milan. Tottenham’s defeat in the San Siro may prove to be very costly, underlining the team’s current form and also a certain naivety around team selection. Not that Spurs boss would agree with that sentiment. After his team had capitulated in the dying seconds of the game, when questioned about the players that didn’t start the game, he commented: “You disrespect the players that tonight showed better qualities than the opponent.” Journalists asked him if the result might have been different if Kieran Trippier and Toby Alderweireld had played. “When my decision is to play with 11, you must respect my decision, because I am the manager.” He told ESPN that the Inter game was Spurs’ best performance since the start of the season and that he had 25 players to select from. There has been criticism that the likes of Lucas Moura, arguably Tottenham’s best player this season, was not in the starting eleven. The Guardian said Pochettino had cut a frustrated figure on the touchline, but the problems may be more than a 2-1 defeat in Milan. The Independent reported: “Spurs have shown many of the hallmarks of a team on the slide. Losing leads. Conceding late goals. Brittle at set-pieces.” The Inter defeat was their third consecutive loss, coming after defeats against Watford and Liverpool. Pochettino proclaimed before the Inter game that his team was not realistic contenders in any single competition this season. Pundits point to the stream of changes that the Argentinian has made already this season and that his approach prevents consistency. The Standard asked, after Tottenham’s home defeat at the hands of Liverpool, if Tottenham’s moment has passed. “After three years of improvement, Mauricio Pochettino’s team look stale…no one stands still in football. If you are not going forward, then you are moving backwards. Spurs have stalled.” The Standard added that the lack of activity in the transfer market in the summer is looking inexcusable. “The commitment to the new stadium means money is tight, but Spurs should have learnt the lesson of Arsenal’s move to the Emirates. A modern arena is important, but no club with serious ambitions can afford to skimp on transfers.” But their former player, Robbie Keane, said in The Express that the club was trying to add to the squad in the transfer window. “There have been a few moans that they didn’t make a signing over the summer, but they tried to sign four players. Teams were overpricing players. If they can buy a couple of players in January, which I’m sure they will, they can have a good season.” Some sections of the media are calling it a “mini-crisis” at Tottenham, but it is still early days. Nevertheless, The Daily Telegraph described the current situation as “Pochettino’s toughest Spurs challenge.” Sources: The Guardian, Independent, Daily Telegraph, BBC, ESPN, Express, Evening Standard.

It was a real shame to see the FA’s decision to remove Whyteleafe from this season’s FA Cup over what seems to have been an incredibly minor administrative mistake. The Surrey-based club were kicked out of the competition just 24 hours before their second qualifying match against St Albans after the FA ruled that an ineligible player had been played during an earlier round. If their appeal is unsuccessful then it is believed that Whyteleafe will have to return the £6000 they received for beating Corinthian Casuals in the previous round; while a potential points deduction could also be on the cards as the ineligible player has also represented Whyteleafe in a Bostik Division One South game this season. In some respects, I see the argument that rules are rules and if one is broken then a club should be punished, however on occasions like this it is plainly clear that the FA have a completely blinkered view of the realities of Non-League football. Clubs like Whyteleafe usually rely on the work of volunteers or part-time staff whose responsibilities stretch across numerous different duties. It would be perfectly reasonable to expect a Football League club, who have a fully staffed administrative department, to abide by all regulations; however, in Non-League the situation is completely different. My worry is that if the FA is insistent on stringently enforcing every single rule without looking into the context of individual situations then the volunteers throughout Non-League football may decide against continuing their involvement with their local sides for fear of making a potentially damaging mistake. It is absolutely essential that the FA develop a level of common sense with regards to their regulations and realise that a certain amount of leeway should be given in certain situations. Cup News:

The FA Cup As the Yellows finished below tenth place in the Division One league table in 2017-18, we were not eligible to enter the FA Cup competition for season 2018-19. Let's look forward to season 2019-20 in anticipation

Non-League Day

Why Get Involved?

Non-League Day was set up by James Doe in 2010 as a social media experiment, after being inspired by a pre-season trip to Devon to watch Queens Park Rangers play at Tavistock. It has now grown to become an annual part of the football calendar, backed by Premier League and Football League clubs, MPs, celebrities, media organisations, charities and most importantly the non-league clubs themselves and the fans who turn up on the day.

Always scheduled to coincide with an international break, Non-League Day provides a platform for clubs to promote the importance of affordable volunteer led community football while giving fans across the country the chance to show support for their local non-league side.

Many non-league clubs are almost exclusively volunteer run, with money taken at the turnstiles often funding thriving youth set-ups, projects and facilities which are of benefit to the whole community. The level of skill on offer at non-league grounds will never compare to that at the Emirates Stadium or , for example, but there are other sides to the experience, from which the smaller club will always win hands down. The vast majority of games still kick off at 3pm, ticket prices are realistic, you can often stand (and drink!) anywhere in the ground and will always be guaranteed a warm welcome by people who run their clubs for a love of the game.

Whether you’re a Premier League or Championship fan without a game, a League One or League Two supporter who can’t make an away trip, or just someone who is curious about what their local club has to offer, there is sure to be something to interest everyone.

This Day in Football History:

29 September 1971 Chelsea Cooks Up A Baker's Dozen

On 29 September 1971, Chelsea recorded their widest margin of victory, beating Jeunesse Hautcharage 13-0 in the second leg of their first-round meeting in the Cup Winners' Cup.

The tie was effectively over after the first leg, with Chelsea beating Hautcharage, an amateur side, 0-8 in Luxembourg. But the 27,621 people who turned up at Stamford Bridge for the second leg were treated to a match of historic proportions.

Striker (pictured) started the scoring deluge, providing the opening goal in the fourth minute, then adding another two minutes later. By half-time, the Blues were leading 6-0 with additional goals from Alan Hudson (11'), (13', pen.), David Webb (23'), and Ron Harris (44').

In the second half, Hautcharage successfully defended their goal until the 61st minute, when Tommy Baldwin increased the lead to 7-0. More goals soon followed, including two more from Baldwin (68', 90'), a second-half hat-trick from Osgood (63', 80', 88'), and one from Peter Houseman (77').

The final score of 13-0 set a single-game Chelsea record and, with a combined score of 21, also beat the previous European aggregate record of eighteen.

Unfortunately for Chelsea, their scoring fortune ended in the next round, where they lost to Swedish side Atvidaberg on away goals, 1-1.

Introducing Sideburn Bob - The People's Champion

Since 1974 #sideburnbob has been gracing Non-League football programmes either as a front cover or inside a programme for various advertising, as far as I am aware he was first spotted in the 1974 Derby County Ram Boutique advert and thereafter in other various League Club programmes first appearing on the 1976 Kilmarnock programme as a front cover, from there on in fronting 100s of non-league programmes with his glory years being 1980's & 90s.

The mystery of exactly where Bob came from continues. Tony Williams who many of you will know from his Non-League publications wrote in the non league grounds of Great Britain that he had first spotted Bob in a 1950s football magazine and had pasted him into a scrapbook. Doubt remains on this siting as nothing was ever spotted again for over 20 years until the Ram Boutique advert. Popular suggestion is he is in fact clipart which is more plausible as Bob looks like a 70s character and famous footballer Malcolm MacDonald with his ever present partner looking like Rodney Bewes from the Likely Lads which older readers will have fond memories of. So, why do I love this character? Well simply because it brings back memories of programmes collected throughout the years. He is an iconic figure for me - some of my first memories of attending games within Non-League.

Throughout the 2017-18 season, there were many clubs surprisingly interested in issuing programmes with the iconic image either on the front cover or within the programme itself. Prolific issuers were Portland United, Sholing Sports and Bedfont & Feltham and big thanks goes to those 3 programme editors - and of course, to all the other editors that issued.

#sideburnbob the People's Champion will continue to be an iconic figure for me and the search is on for his history and collecting programmes.
