9:20 How Purpose Led to Airbnb Success

Leigh Gallagher Assistant Managing Editor, Fortune Magazine

With a new book released in February 2017, The Airbnb Story: How Three Ordinary Guys Disrupted an Industry, Made Billions . . . and Created Plenty of Controversy , (Feb. 2017) Fortune’s Leigh Gallagher explores the remarkable behind-the-scenes story of the creation and growth of Airbnb. In fewer than nine years, it has gone from oddball idea no investor would touch to cultural phenomenon. At first just the wacky idea of co - founders Brian Chesky, Joe Gebbia, and Nathan Blecharczyk, Airbnb has disrupted the $500 billion hotel industry, and its $30 billion valuation is now larger than that of Hilton and close to that of Marriott. This is the first book solely dedicated to the phenomenon of Airbnb and is also the first in depth study of Airbnb's leader, Brian Chesky, the quirky and curious young CEO, as he steers the company into new markets and increasingly uncharted waters.

Participants will receive an autographed copy of Leigh Gallagher’s new book.

Adriana Aristizabal Award winning war reporter

Interviewed by Cynthia Hudson – #12 of the Most Powerful Latinas Senior Vice President, General Manager of CNN en Español and Hispanic Strategy CNN

Today, Colombia’s peace process commands the attention and interest of the global community. But peace came at a price. (York House While Caught in the Storm of War Press, Feb. 2017) is a fascinating memoir from Adriana Aristizabal, a then 26-year-old single mother and journalist assigned by RCN Newscast to broadcast live shots from the frontlines, sometimes with the bullets flying around her, at height of the conflict between FARC, ELN, Paramilitaries and the Colombian Army. You’ll meet a special woman, a powerful leader, but most of all, a brave soul, who survived being kidnapped, and death threats to her family from the world’s oldest guerrilla group. She pays tribute to more than 150 brave journalists killed during this conflict. The Congress of Colombia honored Adriana with a proclamation exalting her job as a war reporter. In 2014, El Diario La Prensa in New York named her an “Outstanding Woman” for her efforts in the field of art and culture.

Participants will receive an autographed copy of her new book.

13 Leading with Purpose

Co-hosting with Fortune (media partner) and Columbia University (educational partner)

The Association of Latino Professionals for America (ALPFA) released the 50 Most Powerful Latinas (MPL) in corporate America list through its media partner Fortune Magazine on March 14, 2017. We will host the MPL Summit with our educational partner Columbia University on Saturday, May 20th.

Founded in 1972, ALPFA’s purpose is to connect passionate Latino leaders for exponential impact. We first collaborated with Fortune and their partner Great Place to Work on the 10 Best Workplaces for Latinos list, and we are proud to bring to Fortune’s readers this remarkable list of Latina business executives. ALPFA applied the same criteria that Fortune uses for its Most Powerful Women list: the size and importance of the woman's business in the global economy, the health and direction of the business, the arc of the woman's career and social and cultural influence.

ALPFA’s list prioritizes women leading large public companies with significant operating roles, rather than C-Level staff roles. It includes two women operating global private firms, three entrepreneurs who scaled their businesses into the middle market, and three Latinas, who although recently retired, exercise leadership roles on Fortune 500 boards. The list includes Cuban-born Geisha Williams, CEO and President of PG&E Corp., who earlier this month became the first Latina to lead a Fortune 500 company. It also includes PwC partner Maria Moats who leads 1,600 PwC partners in the firm’s Audit practice in North America and Mexico; and Gabriela Franco Parcella, who oversees $340 billion in assets as the Chairman & CEO of Mellon Capital.

These women have significant global roles, such as PepsiCo’s Chief Supply Officer Grace Puma who manages $25 billion in global spend; Adriana Cisneros who leads a global media company that became Facebook’s first Reseller in the Americas, and distributes content to 100 countries in 12 languages; and Bank of America Vice Chairman Sonia Dula who last month closed on a transformational billion-dollar deal to bring mobile connectivity to more than 90% of Mexico’s population, a bold initiative of President Peña Nieto's reform agenda.

These powerful Latinas are leading billion-dollar companies or divisions, managing billion-dollar brands, calling the shots in the financial markets, and traveling around the world negotiating international deals. The accomplishments of these influential Latinas stand on their own, and are even more significant given the traditional roadblocks that exist for women, especially Latinas. These women serve as role models and an inspiration to the next generation of women.

The MPL Summit and a Congratulatory Dinner celebration will take place on May 20th at Columbia University. The MPL Summit theme is “Leading with Purpose” and the agenda and instructions on how to apply to participate can be accessed at www.alpfa.org.

Committed to Girl Scouts’ mission of building girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place, Sylvia was involved with Girl Scouts long before being named to the National Board. As a girl growing up in New Mexico, after her family suffered a major tragedy, Sylvia was forced to move and leave behind her school, her neighborhood, and her friends. It was this move that brought her to Girl Scouts, which would change her life forever, her troop providing her with tools and experiences not widely available to girls of her background at that time. Over the years, Sylvia has spoken across the country about the importance of helping girls discover their strengths, passions, and talents. She also served on the founding board of the Ann Richards School for Young Women Leaders in Austin, Texas—the largest all-girls public school in the nation.

Sylvia is a talented technology executive who has held positions with some of the world’s most respected companies, previously Sylvia was a successful entrepreneur, and worked in corporate executive roles at REBA Technologies, Dell Computer Corporation, Autodesk Inc., Tandem Ungermann-Bass, Apple Computer, and IBM—and she began her career as a rocket scientist at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Sylvia was one of the first Hispanic students, male or female, to earn a graduate engineering degree from Stanford University—an MS in industrial engineering – and she holds a bachelor of science degree with honors in industrial engineering from New Mexico State University .

The Honorable Evelyn Sanguinetti Lt. Governor, Illinois (1st Latina Lt. Governor in the United States)

Evelyn Sanguinetti is proud to serve the residents of the State of Illinois as their 47th Lieutenant Governor. She is a wife, working mother of three and an attorney by trade. From humble beginnings in South Florida to becoming our nation’s first Latina Lieutenant Governor. She was born to teenage parents in Hialeah, a neighborhood outside of Miami, Florida. Her mother was a Cuban refugee and her father, an Ecuadorian immigrant. Evelyn recalls moving frequently as a child because her parents were unable to afford rent. While they were of little means, her parents were determined to give Evelyn every opportunity to succeed. Growing up, Evelyn developed a love for the arts. She learned how to play the piano at a local community center and was accepted into The New World School of the Arts in Miami, FL. Evelyn not only became an accomplished pianist, she cultivated a love for learning. This educational opportunity allowed her to pursue a college education at Florida International University.

Following graduation, Evelyn moved to Chicago to attend The John Marshall Law School where she developed an understanding and passion for the law and for Illinois. Evelyn soon joined Illinois Attorney General ’s office as an Assistant Attorney General where she fought to protect the people of the State of Illinois. In 2010, Evelyn suffered an accident while walking on Wheaton city property. Subsequent medical examinations revealed that she has Multiple Sclerosis (MS). Evelyn vowed to never let her MS stop her. She proceeded to run for, and win, an election to the Wheaton City Council on a platform of delivering efficient, streamlined government.
