Did you feel that you guys got too conservative and just tried to hold onto the lead instead of extending it? “Yeah, that’s on me as the play caller but I just really wasn’t confident. You lost [TE] Vance [McDonald]. You lost [WR] Torrey [Smith]. You’ve got two new guys in there on the offensive line. I was making sure we were good with protection. They were bringing a lot of zero blitzes. You’ve got to get the ball off quick. Make sure that we’ve got the guys picked up, but yeah that’s on me.”

Do you agree with it? “Yeah. I agree with it.”

What about your decision to go for it there on fourth-and-1? “We were outside of, [K] Phil [Dawson] needed it inside the 34. We were as close as possible. I didn’t want to punt in that situation. I didn’t want to give the ball back to them. I thought with a yard that we had a shot the way [RB] Carlos [Hyde] was running. That was the one thing that was moving for us offensively was Carlos running the ball. Hopefully we can get a conversion there. It was a little bit outside of Phil’s range and we had already missed two on the day. It was my call.”

Why does your team not perform as well in the second half as it does in the first half? It’s a pattern. “I think today we had some injuries upfront. Obviously, losing [C Daniel] Danny [Kilgore], who’s kind of the rock solid guy in the middle that takes care of things and we had already shuffled the line. Then you lost Vance, really the kind of the guy who we try to get in the one-on-one matchups at the tight end spot. We started off, I think specifically in the first drive of the second half, we had a big drop right to start. We had a guy open. Hit him. [QB Colin] Kap [Kaepernick] does a good job. Puts the ball on him. Hits him and then we’re kind of behind and then we’re scrambling from there a little bit. Obviously, they are loading the box just because we not able to--.”

My point is, it’s not just this game. “I was answering your question if you’d let me finish.”

I’m sorry. Okay. Please. “I was just explaining what went on in the beginning of the third quarter. With those guys out, they were loading the box so we were trying to run the ball a little bit obviously just to take some pressure off the receivers and the offensive line. So that’s kind of where we were in that situation.”

May I go now? “Sure.”

My question was more extensive than that. It was not only today, but you’ve now lost 12 in a row and it seems you don’t perform generally as well in the second half on offense or defense as the first and I wonder if you have a theory about that? “No. I look at it game to game. So, I would look at this game. I would give you specifically what happened in this game so I know exactly what happened in this game.”

Did the first half look like you expected the offense to look the whole season? “No, we didn’t think we could, I was really, to be honest with you a little bit surprised at how well we ran the ball. They were the fourth best rush defense coming in, but there are a couple things we try to do scheme-wise to take advantage of some of the things they were doing and they popped. I don’t know what Carlos had, I think he had seven carries. It was over 100 yards on those. So, we had the long runs. When they commit that many people to the line of scrimmage, if the ball does get through to the second level there’s a chance for it to pop and that’s what he did. I thought he ran well in those situations and that’s what we were trying to scheme up a little bit in the run game.”

Were you disappointed with your defense’s tackling today? “Well, I think they got worn down. They were on the field too much because our offense couldn’t sustain and stay on the field. So, I think that’s kind of a bye-product to be honest with you.”

Do you think there’s anything else besides the injuries that really kind of steered your, wanting to be, how should I say it, aggressive in the second half? “Well again, I think that’s part of it. When you’re making decisions on where you’re trying to throw the ball and who’s going to be able to get open. They’re rushing and bringing as many guys as they can and gonna play zero coverage behind it. Who do we have an opportunity to get open here and give ourselves an opportunity to get that? We had one earlier but they put [New York Jets CB Darrelle] Revis inside. We tried to throw the slant route and they made a nice play on [WR Quinton Patton] QP and made a good play on the ball. You try to look at the matchups to see who you can get in the one- on-one situations when we get an opportunity to get open.”

There was a report this morning that general manager Trent Baalke is likely to be fired. Just given the way this season has gone, do you have confidence that you and Trent are the right team moving forward for this team? “Yeah, I have tremendous confidence in Trent. I have not heard anything about that.”

Pass rush has been kind of an issue from the last few games. But, you guys had a better pass rush today. “Yeah, I thought [DL DeForest Buckner] Buck specifically, I thought DeForest did a really nice job in there. We did something’s on the edge to kind of free some guys up and [defensive coordinator] Jimmy [O’Neil] put those guys in position to make plays and some guys did. Trying to get after a young quarterback in [QB Bryce] Petty. But I thought our rush was better than it has been in the past.”

Was it more a speed difference or was it more--? “I think it was both. I think it was performance. I thought obviously DeForest played a really good game and I thought there were some things our defensive coaches did to free some guys up that really helped in that situation.”

You look at the second half performances game to game, some people would say that the pattern has been a lack of, that affects the second half, of half time adjustments. Would you say that’s fair? “No. I wouldn’t say that’s fair.”

You did say it was on you, the play calling in the second half? “Yeah.”

Implies you would do it differently if you had to do it over again? “Well, I think we all when we go back and look at the film you can always second guess yourself and that’s what I think we always do is second guess yourself. Just like the last call of the game. As I told the guys, that ones on me. It’s my responsibility. I made the call for us to go for it with the ball on the 36-yard line, fourth-and-one and we didn’t get it. So I made the wrong decision in that situation. It’s all on me.” Not on the blockers or the execution? “Well, my job is to make sure I know if our players can execute and obviously we didn’t. So, that’s on me. I made the wrong call.”

You mentioned how much the defense was on the field. They had the ball for 42 minutes. Was part of the thinking on fourth down, ‘I don’t want to give them the ball’? “Yeah, I was a little concerned about putting our defense back out on the field in that situation and obviously in the overtime rules, you kick a field goal there’s an opportunity for the other team to go back out there and match it. So, we could take a little bit of pressure off of them by converting offensively. We didn’t take any pressure off our defense in the second half because of the three-and-outs. I think we had a three-and-out then a six-and-out then a three-and-out. We weren’t helping our defense at all on the offensive side of the ball. I thought we were that close and we’re going to be that close and down that far in that you’ve got a shot and then you get a first down there and at least you’ve got the ball into field goal range and we could work the clock a little bit longer in that situation and give our defense a chance to rest.”

QB Colin Kaepernick Press Conference – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

Is there anything you can put your finger on as to why the offense played so well in the first half and then after halftime, there wasn’t much production? “We have to go out and make plays. I don’t think there was one things that was, it just comes down to our execution and our ability to make plays when we have the opportunity.”

You guys played the game without T Joe Staley but there were three other starters lost, injured. Do you feel like you were a little bit limited in what you could do offensively just because of that? “You never want to lose starters. You don’t expect injuries like that. But, we have to be able to adjust, adapt and go out and still win football games.”

Head coach Chip Kelly blamed himself. He said he got maybe too conservative because of the situation. Would you have liked to keep the play calling a little more open, a little more passing? “I think Chip is trying to do what’s best for this team and put us in the best situation to win. Obviously, we had two linemen go down, two linemen that are very good for us. So, I think he was trying to put us, our line, our offense in the best situation to go out and succeed.”

What does that do to just the psyche of the team to have this happen time and time again? “It’s something that we have to be able to fight through. We have to be able to change this course that we’re on and when we’re in these positions, we have to make plays at the end of the game, finish the game and be able to pull out a win.”

Is it hard to believe you are 1-12 and have lost 12 in a row? “Yeah. I’ve never been in this situation before. It’s something that we have to change. Ultimately, it comes down to us being able to go out and fight for a win and we have to do a better job doing that.”

You had 116 yards passing in the first half and I think like four yards in the second half and overtime. Was it something they were doing or was it just mistakes like what’s happening? “No. I don’t know what the official stats are but once again, offensively we have to be better. We put up points early and in the second half, overtime, we didn’t do a good enough job.”

What specifically in the second half did you struggle with? “We have to make plays. That’s what it comes down to. Once again, if you don’t go out and execute, don’t go out and make plays, you’re not going to put up anything on offense.”

Did it have anything to do with the other team making adjustments to how well you guys played in the first half and you guy not making adjustments? “Once again, they make adjustments, we make adjustments. That’s part of football. But, ultimately, it comes down to execution.”

On the team’s ability to finish, is there one particular play or moment in today’s game that will stick with you in that regard? “I don’t think there’s one particular play. I think as a whole, we have to do a better job finishing. There’s a lot of plays and a lot of opportunities all over the field that we have to be able to take advantage of.”

On the fourth down play in overtime, have you had a chance to watch it? Are you confident that you made the right read on that one? “Yeah. It was a run.”

It was a straight run? No option? “Our option is off the widest guy. So, no. In that situation, Chip had confidence that we would be able to get some push, get that first down and we didn’t finish.”

Is it difficult for you, I mean, you’ve had some adversity these last couple years but is this the most frustrating season for you on the field? “It’s something that, once again, we have to work through. Frustration isn’t going to help us win. It’s not going to help us change the course that we’re on. We have to refocus again this week and get ready to go win.”

Did you see your parents support you publicly on ESPN’s Undefeated? “I talk to my parents all the time. So, I already knew the supported me. But, I think they wanted everybody else to know that as well.”

49ers S Antoine Bethea Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

What do you feel changes in the second half of games for you guys, not only today, but all season long? “I can’t tell you. If we had that answer I’m pretty sure we would make those corrections and things would be a little different. So, I really can’t tell you exactly what it is.”

People are starting to wonder why you guys are still believing in head coach Chip Kelly. “People are saying that? I haven’t heard that. But, he’s our coach. The same way he believes in us we believe in him. We started this season together, we are going to finish together.”

What happened in the second half, defensively? Why was New York Jets RB Bilal Powell able to get some success running? “I can’t really tell you right now. Going to have to go back and look at the film and see what was going on. Like you said, obviously they were having success in the second half running the ball. Like I said, right now I can’t really pinpoint exactly what it was.”

Have you ever been through a season like this? “I have. We went 2-14 in Indy. It’s one of those years. As a team you stay together, you stick together, continue to build one another up, don’t worry about what the media or anyone outside the locker room has to say and just keep working.”

49ers K Phil Dawson Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

I know those were chip shots, but we’re not used to seeing you miss a couple in a game. Was there any factor going on that was hard to see? “The first one, I’ve got to chalk it up to Levi’s Stadium. It just got me. I wasn’t expecting it to do what it did in the air. The second one was totally on me. The third one I actually hit pretty good. That kind of sums up the day.”

Did the wind catch the first kick? “Yeah, it was going right down the middle and took a hard left turn right around the goal line. I wasn’t expecting that. I don’t really know what to do about that one. The second one, that’s like I said, 100 percent on me. That was a missed field goal by me. No explanation, nothing like that.”

These are obviously all tough losses but how much does this one hurt? It seemed like it was there for the taking. “They all hurt. You put so much into each and every week and when you don’t get the results you want, it’s frustrating. We get paid to come to work each and every week so we’ll reboot it and get back at it tomorrow.”

We don’t normally surround you after you make field goals but we’re all over you now. Is this just part of the job? “Yeah, this is it. It’s the life. It’s why I used to have hair and now I don’t. Every time you go out on the field you need to make the kick and today I didn’t do that.”

I know it wasn’t your call whether to go for a first down, field goal, or punt but what was going through your mind in overtime at about the 36-yard line? “I was just trying to be ready. I totally agree with the decision. If that was the game winner, maybe it’s a little different. Given that in overtime, even if we make it they’re going to get the ball, it’s a low percentage kick. If we miss it, they’re about two first downs away from being able to get in scoring range. I totally support the call and I obviously had my hands full trying to handle my own business today, so I was just trying to be ready in case they decided to kick that.”

You determine your range in warmups. What was your range heading north? “Today was one of those days that whatever I determined in pregame changed throughout the course of the day. It was a little bit of a sneaky day. Sometimes the windier days are almost a little easier because it’s pretty obvious what the wind is doing. Today, that wasn’t the case. It would blow a little bit here and then it would be the opposite. It would be one way and then the other.”

49ers LB Eli Harold Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

Head coach Chip Kelly said that the offense’s inability to put a drive together really hurt the defense. And it looked like you guys were missing some tackles, and obviously they came back. Did you feel that? Were you guys more tired in the second half because of the way the game was going? “At the end of the day we have to execute no matter what situation we’re in, up by 30, down by 30. No matter what the offense does we have to do our job. The adversity, it’s going to happen every game. So, at the end of the day we have to do our job.”

Were you frustrated, as a unit, with some of the tackling today? “We have to make the plays when they needed to be made. It takes all 11, even the guys that are subbing in and out. It’s a team effort. At the end of the day, like I said, we have to execute.”

The pass rush was very strong today, especially in the first half. Did the New York Jets do some things strategically to take you out of some of that in the second half? “They threw it a little quicker in the second half. I feel like being at the point of the game where we were in the first half, they were on their heels a lot. So, we took advantage of that. In the second half, like I said, we didn’t execute.”

Obviously, all of these losses are hard, but where does this one stack up in a game that was there for the taking? “It hurts. But, at the end of the day we just have to stay together. We always breakdown on ‘family’. We have to have each other’s backs. All in all, it’s all of our fault. We can’t blame it on one guy. But, this loss hurts. We felt like this is one we could have gotten. It wasn’t going to be easy. No game is going to be easy. But, we really thought we could win this one.”

You say that you have to stick together, is everyone sticking together? “Oh yeah. That’s our whole mantra, family. Every day we breakdown on family and that’s what we’re all about.”

49ers RB Carlos Hyde Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

How were you guys able to get so many yards on the ground? “Being decisive, trusting what you see, and just hitting. A few runs hit outside and the receivers did a good job of blocking and getting me one-on-one with the safety. Make him miss, and I’m off to a big game.”

What changed in the second half? “I just think the Jets came out and played harder. Nothing changed with us. We still had some success in our run game. I just think the Jets came out and played a little harder in the second half.”

How did you think the offensive line did? “I think they did a great job today. I had a career-high today, so hats off to those guys. Without them, I wouldn’t have had that. The receivers did a hell of a job, too.”

On the fourth-and-two play at the end in overtime, is that kind of a bread-and-butter play for you guys? “That’s a play we’ve been running all game. The Jets just played good defense right there. Not taking anything away from them, they did a good job filling up all the holes. I didn’t have a lane where I could go. I just tried to hit it up in there and tried to get a push, but they did a good job there.”

The offense exploded in the first half but had five straight punts in the second half. What is it going to take for that to carry over in the third and fourth quarters? “Just keep fighting. In the second half, just come out the way we did in the first half. Play fast. Even though we were up 14 points, we’ve just got to keep going. We’ve got to get a lot more points than that. It’s easy for a team to come back in and, as you’ve seen today, come out and tie the game and go overtime. If we would stay on it and score some points we wouldn’t have been in that position.”

This team was already without San Francisco 49ers T Joe Staley but to lose San Francisco 49ers C Daniel Kilgore, TE Vance McDonald, and WR Torrey Smith in the game, how much did that change things late? “Those are all starters right there. It hurts, but we’ve got some young guys that will step up. Next man up. These young guys get back in practice next week, work on their technique and get better, and get ready for Sunday.’”

You win and lose as a team. Individually, can you even let yourself think about the day you had running downhill? “It doesn’t really matter. I’d take the win over the stats any day. I really wanted to win that one. I wanted to win all of them. The stats don’t really matter. I’m just trying to win.’”

San Francisco 49ers head coach Chip Kelly blamed conservative play-calling partly on the loss. Do you guys notice when he says things like that? Do you guys care? Does it bother you? “No. It’s my job to execute the play, not worry about what coach is calling or whether it’s conservative or not. I have to go out there and execute it. I feel like if we go out there and execute it at the end of the play, it’s a good play.”

With the way things have been going for this team, is there any feeling that creeps in late in a close game like this, like here we go again? Any thoughts start creeping in? “No, not for me at all. Just go out there and keep playing. We were up and when it went into overtime, I had a good feeling that we were going to at least get some type of points out of it but we didn’t. That’s part of the game. Just keep fighting, we’ll be all right.”

49ers S Jaquiski Tartt Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

It was one of those games where you’re just riding down the road and think in the back of your mind, ‘What happened back there?’ “They made some plays where we should have made plays.”

As they were coming back in the fourth quarter, were you saying to yourself, ‘This can’t be happening?’ “No. For me, I was thinking we were about to stop them. The offense would get the ball, and we would run the clock out.”

There were a half dozen sacks today by the defense. The going was good, including for you. “Yeah, it’s a good feeling when we’re getting pressure on the quarterback, helping out the secondary, and, overall, just playing good defense.”

Was it just a matter of a simple adjustment by them? “Like I said, they made a few plays. They just made some plays that they should have made, including one on me. In overtime, the ball that was caught on me, should have been a play that I should have made.”

Take us through that play. It looked like the quarterback was scrambling and scrambling, he let the pass go, and the guy just went up and got it. “Yeah, that’s on me. He threw the ball up like it was up for grabs and I should be coming down with it.”

In the second half, they ran the ball so effectively. What was the difference there that you saw? “I don’t really know. I’ll go back and watch film, and then I could tell you.”

It seemed like after San Francisco 49ers WR Torrey Smith went down, that was kind of difficult for them. Did you feel something palpable when that happened? “Torrey is a good friend of mine, so it’s tough to see him go down. At the same time, we’re playing a football game. We’ve got to stay focused on the game.”

How was this team able to get six sacks? There was pressure all around. “A good game plan from our defensive coordinator [Jim O’Neil]. He saw things that we didn’t have a positive on and he called those plays.”

49ers DB Jimmie Ward Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

Did you feel like you had an all-around good game? “Yes, just like I said [defensive coordinator] Jim O’Neil had a great game plan coming into the game, so I was able to make those plays because of how good the defensive rush was.”

The official picked up the flag on that out of bounds hit, did that feel like a good break? “Yes. I knew the quarterback was still in bounds. I am just playing until the whistle. That is what we are taught playing football. I didn’t want to do any dirty plays or anything like that. I am not a dirty player, I just try to play inside the rules.”

Are you kind of at a loss because it seems like you guys start off good every game, you guys have leads in 10 games this season and then how things kind of get away from you, can you figure out why that is? “I don’t have an answer for you right now. I just feel like it starts in practice. We just have to finish in practice because [head coach] Chip, [Kelly] always tells us that we have to finish. In practice he emphasizes to finish and so that is on the players. Somehow we have to come together and get that done.”

Coach Kelly said that it looked like to him that the defense was getting worn down and that is the reason he decided to go for it on fourth and one, because he didn’t want to put you guys back on the field. Did you sense that? “No, I was fine. Chip Kelly he is the leader, so if he wanted to make that call, I am going to stick by him whether he didn’t go for it on fourth down or did. It doesn’t matter, we are a team so we lose as a team and we win as a team.”

How are you handling this losing streak? “Nobody is going to be happy about losing, especially on a streak. I am just trying to win in practice and everybody on this team is trying to win in practice, because it starts in practice first.”

New York Jets Head Coach Todd Bowles Press Conference – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

Can you talk about after the first five minutes you were down 14 to nothing? You came back and made the adjustments at halftime. It looked like the tales of two teams again. “Well we played hard. We had some missed tackles in the first drive when they scored. Obviously, the interception that put them down there. We missed three tackles. We missed three plays. That got them down there to score the second time. After that we kind of buckled down. You know, the guys fought and they didn’t give up. They had some great determination. I’m proud of them for fighting.”

How do you think New York Jets QB Bryce Petty played? “He was up and down. You know, he had some plays he’d like to have back. He made some throws. He made some dangerous throws. He got away with some things, but he settled down and made some gutsy plays. Two-point play took a lot of guts on his part, you know? He won the game though, the important thing, and we’ll work on getting better from there.”

What did you think of the 26-yard pass when he was running to his left, and he ended up completing it to New York Jets WR Robby Anderson right at the end of overtime? “It was a great play by Robby. Obviously, Bryce was there, he scrambled and bought some time. You know, that play could go either way right there, but Robby made a great play. He made it look good and you’ve got to give him credit for his guts, for Bryce. ”

What can you say about New York Jets RB Bilal Powell’s effort today? “He did a gentleman’s job. If it wasn’t for him I don’t know if we would have even won this game. He single handedly, from my point of view at least, broke every tackle he could break. He caught every ball. He ran. He blocked. He did everything, and he had outstanding effort.”

Do you think at times Bryce held the ball too long in the pocket? “At times, yeah. I mean, at times he did.”

What does it say, I mean the first pass is a disaster. You know, they return it on Bryce’s throw. What does it say about him just to be able to rally himself from a disastrous start like that? “Well, for him to bounce back and then get better as the game went on and calm himself down, I think earlier in the year he might not have been so fortunate as far as reacting that way. But, for him to come back and fight, and understand he is starting and he is in the game, to come back and win it says a lot about his growth.”

Did you think his awareness got better as the game went on, particularly keeping his eyes down the field when things broke down? “I think it was up and down. I’m not going to say he got completely better where he was sharp completely. He had some up and down moments that he’d like to have back, or some reads he’d like to have back, but his feistiness got better as the game went on. You know, he started pulling the ball down and running a little more, and started changing the game that way with his feet. I thought that got better.”

San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick had four yards passing in the second half. What were you guys doing so effectively in terms of your pass defense to, I mean that’s a pretty remarkable number, he just had four yards passing. “Well, we didn’t do much. We stopped the run. You know, we thought if we could make him pass on third down we could try to get after him a little bit, and we got some pressure on third down.”

What’s the update on New York Jets RB Matt Forte? “He’s got a right knee he’s going to get more tests run on tomorrow.”

Did he injure himself in this game or--? “Yeah he did. I think it was the first quarter maybe.”

It wasn’t an aggravation of a lingering thing? “Not to my knowledge, no.”

How about New York Jets S Marcus Gilchrist? It looked like it might be somewhat severe. “He’s got a patella tendon tear. He needs surgery. He’ll be done for the year.”

New York Jets CB Buster Skrine has a concussion? “Buster has a concussion.”

Now we’ve asked you a ton of questions about your defensive line in recent weeks. What did you see in that fourth-and-1 stop there? “Well, some guys stepped up and made some plays. Fourth-and-1 is what I’m used to seeing. The first drive, second drive of the game is not what I’m used to seeing. But, they stepped up and they took charge of the fourth-and-1.”

What was your message to the team at halftime? “Keep fighting. I thought it was the game similar to Cleveland. You know, we were down, we were fighting. We made some mistakes that we cleaned up and I thought we had the chance to win it at the end. So, the guys they really kept fighting.”

It seems the last couple weeks New York Jets is just letting it all hang out, like he did last year. Like now he trusts his leg and he’s just playing like he did in the past. Have you seen that too in the last couple of games? “Well, yeah he’s getting a little bit of help, it’s a little bit of both. I guess, the more you get over it and don’t think about it, the better you start moving around. So, it’s a little bit of both.”

Any other injuries, besides--? “Well, [New York Jets RT Brent] Qvale had a left hamstring and [New York Jets TE Brandon] Bostick had a right ankle.”

What about from an overall perspective, you and the team took so much criticism after the Monday night game, because it was so lopsided a lot of people questioned the effort. How personally satisfied just to see the comeback today and the effort they showed in the second half? “It might be for the guys in the fight, rightfully so. I mean, you lose a game on Monday night like that, everybody takes criticism. You don’t want to lose a game 41-10. For them to come back and fight you know, it says a lot about their character and I’m just happy for the guys.”

How tough is it to play an overtime game after Monday Night Football when you had to travel across the country? “That’s life in the NFL.”

But I mean, does that show signs of your guys that it’s not the best hand being dealt? “I mean, everybody can make an argument for their schedule. I’m not going to make that as an excuse. They fight hard and we showed up and fought hard today. Thanks.”

New York Jets QB Bryce Petty Press Conference – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

How do you think you played overall? “Overall, hey, we got the win. The first half was probably about as ugly as I could play. I came out a little more nervous than I thought I was going to be. I felt good all week, good practices all week, and then, for whatever reason, I just have to settle down. Hats off to the team for just sticking with me. We just kept fighting and kept fighting and plugging away. The end result was a win and that’s all we care about.”

What did you do to get your head right after that first pass was intercepted? “There’s just a lot of football left. It’s not going to be my last interception. I know that for a fact. It’s definitely not how you want to start the ballgame but, again, it’s pre-snap, post-snap, and those are the bumps and bruises I’m going to take. I’ve got to get better post-snaps and that was a look the corner was playing off of but it was the sixth look and he came down and was playing two. Things like that I’ve got to be able to see and recognize and not put our team in that position early on.

On the pass to New York Jets WR Robby Anderson in overtime, can you walk us through what you were seeing and what you were thinking as that play unfolded? “Yeah, I just kind of got flushed to the left there and Robby just does a really good job. He’s kind of one of those, as we like to call him in our QB room, a QB-friendly guy. When you’re running and escaping, he just finds where you are. He made a great play, great catch in a big-time moment.”

Was it a good throw? “He made the catch so that’s all that matters.”

Is that a situation, you could say it’s reckless or brave, one or the other, but the kind of player you see yourself as to make that kind of play? “Shoot. I think you just play QB and you go off your instincts. In that moment it just felt like flush left and Robby was there. It probably wasn’t the smartest thing to do throwing across my body like that but he made a play and we’re sitting here with a win.”

It seems like most of the plays you made were on the move, on the run. Has that always been your forte to some degree? It just seemed like the biggest plays you made today you were kind of either flushed out or moving. “I wouldn’t say that’s where I feel better. I just think when a pocket breaks down you just go be a football player. I’m excited about how guys were moving and that’s as big a part of it as anything, is just those guys seeing you escape the pocket and making a move. A pocket breaks down and that’s going to happen in games so you have to have that ability to be aware of what’s going on. Our guys did a great job of that.”

Can you take us through the 2-point conversion? It looked like there was no way you were not going to get in there. “Shoot, we needed it. I think that’s the first time a stiff-arm has ever worked in my life and I’m glad it worked at that moment. It was funny. [New York Jets RB Bilal Powell] BP was kind of yelling at me to pull the ball as the snap was going on, and it just so happened I needed to pull the ball and got in.”

Was it a true read option? “Mhm.”

Did you sense that the San Francisco 49ers defensive fatigue was a disparity in the time of possession especially after halftime? Did you see that fatigue in them? “I think just as an offense we settled down and started to run the ball. When those big guys up there start moving people, we can be a really good offense. They just kept pounding, kept pounding and again it’s we go where the O-line goes. That’s kind of the rule of thumb when it comes to football and BP did an outstanding job coming in. It was un fortunate that [New York Jets RB] Matt [Forte] went down but when you’ve got a guy like BP you just step right up and make plays.”

What did you see out of RB Bilal Powell today? Obviously you see it in practice but he hasn’t had extended periods of time because he’s a complimentary back. “In our room we know that guy’s a baller. I don’t know another word to describe it. He makes plays that he shouldn’t make. Defensive guys have him dead in the right and he just slips and moves in certain ways that he gets past guys. I love when he touches the ball because good things normally happen.”

Do you think you’ll be less nervous Saturday night now with this under you belt?? “Yeah I hope so. I hope that feeling starts to leave the more games that I get in there. I don’t know. In the sense I like being nervous, I love it. I feel like the day that I stop getting nervous for football is probably the day that I’m going to hang it up. I’m just so passionate about football and it’s that feeling that football gives me that nothing else gives me. That’s kind of that feeling, the butterflies in your stomach, I just have to be able to control those and be able to use those as a positive thing rather than a negative thing.”

Were you more nervous today than you were for the Los Angeles Rams game? “Yeah, it was weird. I don’t really know why for whatever reason. It was just jitters for my second start and I knew kind of what I expected and so the first pass happened and they picked it. That probably played a little bit into it. But you just have to settle down and like I said there’s a lot of football left and I understand that. I’ve been playing long enough to know that. I just want to be productive for our team. I just have to leave that expectation at the door and just go play.”

What do you feel like you showed today? This was only your second start but what do you feel like you showed the coaches moving forward? “I don’t really know what I showed, it’s more for me for this win it’s fight. I’m going to fight until there’s zeroes on the clock. What was great about this win tonight was we all did that. This season obviously hasn’t gone the way that we’ve wanted it to, but to see a game like that on the road and just fight, grit, scratch, claw, whatever you do, that’s a big win for that locker room.”

You seem to have a special connection with WR Robby Anderson. As soon as you come into the game the ball starts going to him. Why is there that comfort level with him? “I think it probably started in preseason. We were getting a lot of looks together and I mean shoot, the guy makes plays. He did a great job a couple times tonight but it definitely stemmed from preseason.”

Do you feel like you did a better job as the game went on not holding the ball in the pocket? I wonder if you could maybe speak to that particularly. Also, the areas that you feel like you got better as the game went on. “The first half I just, I think I was wanting to confirm what I was seeing and that was kind of correlating to holding the ball which makes me mad because I don’t normally do that. Especially as preseason and camp I felt better about what’s going on. I’d have to go back and look at tape and just get out of the confirmation, know what you see and then throw the ball. I was just waiting a little bit too long but I think really just the second half just settle down. I kept telling myself we’re going to make plays, something good’s going to happen, and you kind of get in a groove as the quarterback. We started running the ball and good things happened.”

Jets WR Robby Anderson Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

The pass in overtime, did you see him New York Jets QB Bryce Petty get flushed out of the pocket? What did you see there? “I knew he was going to put it up to me. I was just waiting for the ball. I knew it was going to be a big play. I could see his eyes looking for me. I had to bring in that big time catch.”

How about Petty’s performance? He got off to a bad start early with that pick? “It’s a four-quarter game. Nobody’s going to play the game perfect. You can’t really call it a bad start. You’re going to make mistakes. It’s not how you start. It’s how you finish.”

When you made that catch in overtime, you knew you were in New York Jets K Nick Folk’s range. Did you feel that was it? “It was a big-time play. But it’s not over until it’s over. I just went out there, did my job and contributed. I’m out there to make catches and that’s what I have to do.”

Jets K Nick Folk Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

It’s been a long time, but the New York Jets have finally gotten another win. “It has [been a long time]. Everybody fought pretty hard today. I was excited about that. We played well, and we ended up getting a win in the end.”

How about the determination of this team? A lot of people criticized this team for a lack of effort on Monday night, but this team fought back today. “We didn’t play overall well on Monday. Today, we played much better. We started off a little slow and we’ll have to fix that, but other than that we gave up 14 points in the first five minutes of the game and that was almost it. They got three points later, but it was a great fight from then on. We just have to start a little faster.”

It seemed like the momentum shifted and the defense started to shut down the San Francisco 49ers. That momentum seemed contagious on the New York Jets sideline? “The defense had a bunch of big stops which led the offense to a couple of big drives. Even if we ended up punting, we ended up pinning them back and playing a field position game. We ended up scoring enough points to win it.”

Jets RB Matt Forte Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

The fact that you were able to go back in and play, you don’t think it’s an ACL or MCL? “My ligaments are good. It’s something to do with the clicking and popping that’s going on in there. I don’t know what that is, but my ligaments are intact.”

What did you think of New York Jets RB Bilal Powell’s performance? “It was great. Bilal has been working hard every week. It shows. We didn’t start fast, but we hung around long enough so we could run the ball effectively and he had two touchdowns. So it was great.”

What did today’s game tell you about the team? “We have more learning to do. In the first series, I don’t know what happened with that interception. But, [New York Jets QB] Bryce [Petty] played well. For something like that to have happened early in the game and keep your head in the game and get a win is big.”

What does coming back late and fighting back tell you about the team? “It doesn’t matter what happens or what the circumstances are. We’re going to keep fighting out there. It tells us that we’re resilient and that we can keep doing it.”

With that pick in the first drive, you weren’t thinking, “Here we go again?” “Things like that happen in a game. You never know how things are going to go. That’s why we play four quarters. You have to keep that mindset. It was good that Bryce kept that mindset and didn’t say, ‘Here we go again.’ He went out there and proved he could play in the league.”

Jets WR Brandon Marshall Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

What did you make of New York Jets QB Bryce Petty’s 26-yard pass in overtime? “I felt like that’s what we should have done the whole game. It’s hard to tell a guy to go out there, especially against that team that will throw a lot at you from a coverage standpoint, so I thought that that’s what he does great is roll out and throw the ball up to some players like [New York Jets WR] Robbie Anderson who comes down with that eight out of 10 times. I was glad that we got to it at the right time.”

How did you see Bryce progress and in what areas did you think he got better throughout the game? “I thought that once the running game got going that it helped him out a lot. It was more so that once the running game got going, it really helped him settle down a little bit and go where he was supposed to go.”

Do you think that you guys showed something as a team today to spot them 14 points five minutes into the game? “This is what you want to see. Obviously we’re not playing for the playoffs or ultimate team goals, but in situations like this you want to see guys finish strong. You want to see guys be the people that they’re supposed to be and be the guys that we know that they are. I thought we showed a lot of character coming out of Monday Night Football and laying an egg, so that was a good sign.”

What did you think of New York Jets RB Bilal Powell’s day? “He’s special. He reminded me of last year a little bit of being able to get him involved. That was special, very special.”

Are you OK? What happened on the sideline there? “I’ll be alright. It was just a helmet to a bone. It’s a little swollen right now and stiff. I’m sure it will calm down during the week.”

Did you think that New York Jets QB Bryce Petty did a better job keeping his eyes down field as the game went on? I know he took a lot of sacks early and less so as the game went on. “I’m not going to say that he went out there and played lights out or that he played at the level a top-tier guy would play at. This is his second start and his second year. He made the plays that he’s supposed to. That two-point conversion was something special. That shows you the type of guy that he is. He’s fiery and will give you everything he’s got. I was just glad that he made the plays when he was supposed to.”

Jets RB Bilal Powell Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

What does this say about the team, that you erased an 11-point fourth quarter deficit? “It just shows the character we have. Obviously, it’s not the season that everyone was expecting, but we’re fighting. We have a lot of guys on the team that have pride.”

What were you thinking when New York Jets RB Matt Forte went down? “Just be ready. It’s part of being a professional. Next man up rule.”

Can you take me through that touchdown run in overtime? “It was just a good call. It shows a lot with the coaches calling it and putting it on my back. The offensive line executed up front and made it easier for me. I just ran to what I saw and I give the glory to all of the guys up front.”

How do you like the way New York Jets QB Bryce Petty handled himself today as he helped you guys come from behind? “Bryce is a great human being. Every day he comes in, he works hard. He pays attention to detail. He does what he needs to do and it showed today. He was well prepared.”

Did you put it on yourself to provide this team a spark out there with you guys down? “Whenever my number is called, I just try to take full advantage of my opportunity. When Matt went down, I was well prepared like I always am each week.”

You’ve always been a complimentary guy to Matt. When he goes down and you have a chance to be “The Guy,” how much does it help to get into a rhythm and get into a flow? “Like I said, whenever my number is called, I’m ready. It’s unfortunate that he went down. He could’ve been the one with the big game. But, I’m always prepared.”

On the last play, did you know they San Francisco 49ers were offside or what? “I don’t know what happened. All I know is I was tired and I was in the end zone. I’m not a big celebration guy. I was just waiting for the confirmation that it was a touchdown.”

Jets S Calvin Pryor Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

Considering how the season has gone, what kind of fight do you think the team showed about itself today? “It just shows the type of guys that we have in the locker room. We have a lot of high-character guys. The season hasn’t gone the way we’ve wanted, but that still doesn’t give us a right to not go out there and fight. We started off slow, but at halftime we challenged each other to do better. We held each other accountable and responsible. We came out and played great in the second half and overtime.”

What was it that enabled you to shutdown San Francisco 49ers QB Colin Kaepernick late in the game? He did some things early and then nothing. “Honestly, I don’t know. It’s just attitude and effort. We felt like we didn’t go out there and try to dominate the first half. That changed in the second half. We dominated the line of scrimmage and that predicted how things went.”

Did you appeal to your pride as a defense after halftime after a guy ran for that many yards on you early? “Exactly. That never happens on us, so to have a guy rush for 100-something yards on six or seven carries in the first half is definitely out of character for us. We were angry, so we had to go do something about it, and we did.”

What did you think about New York Jets QB Bryce Petty? “I believe in number nine. He knows that and I’ve been in his ear since day one telling him to stay ready. He went out there and fought. Things weren’t always pretty, but we fought it out and we won.”

How badly did you need this victory? “We needed it bad. It was two teams who really didn’t have much to play for except pride and for the name on the back and front of your jersey. That’s what it came down to today. Both teams fought it out and fought hard. We just made more plays down the stretch.”

Jets DL Leonard Williams Postgame Quotes – December 11, 2016 San Francisco 49ers vs. New York Jets

Talk about being down by 14 points in the first four minutes in the game. Then with fight and determination coming back to win it in overtime. “We said in the beginning of the game to start fast. That is something we didn’t do. We didn’t start fast. They had a big jump on us. So we came back in at halftime. We were saying let’s finish, let’s finish let’s finish. We shut them out in the second half with no points allowed. Offense was really fighting [RB] Bilal [Powell] had a great game and we finished strong.”

Talk a little bit about those adjustments you made at halftime? “We didn’t really make any adjustments. What we really had to do was just stop the run, so we can start pass rushing. In the second half we did a little bit better at stopping the run so that we can get some third down situations and start sacking the quarterback. It was just a matter of finishing. That is what we did in the second half.”
