"For the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve and to give his life as a ransom for many." —Mark 10:45 PAGE 2 PASTORAL TEAM OCTOBER 21, 2018

F J R. MC, A Father Joseph McCaffrey was born and raised in the former mining town of Muse, PA, Cecil Township, Washington County. In 1983, he graduated cum laude with a major in Philosophy and a minor in Psychology from and St. Paul Seminary. The Diocese of assigned him to the major seminary of the Pontifical College Josephinum in Columbus, Ohio, where he graduated summa cum laude with a Master’s Degree in Biblical Studies and Master’s Degree in Divinity in 1987. In the same year, ordained him a Priest of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Pittsburgh at St. Paul Cathedral on May 23rd. His first priestly assignment was as Parochial Vicar at St. Gabriel of the Sorrowful Virgin Parish in Whitehall, Pennsylvania. He served for 1½ years in that position and was later assigned to St. Benedict the Abbot parish in Peters Township, Washington County. Soon after, he was also appointed the first Chaplain to the Federal Bureau of Investigation for the Pittsburgh office. In 1995, Fr. McCaffrey gained the distinction of being the youngest priest assigned as a pastor in the Diocese of Pittsburgh when he was appointed pastor of St. James the Apostle in New Bedford. At the same time, he was appointed Chaplain to the New Castle Youth Develop- ment Center, a maximum-security prison for juvenile offenders. Fr. McCaffrey built an interfaith chapel in the center of the facility which was dedicated in November 2001. On June 24, 2002, he became pastor of Saints John & Paul Parish in Franklin Park. As pastor of Saints John & Paul Parish, he oversaw the building of the 1,500-seat church which Bishop Zubik dedicated on May 2, 2010. Fr. McCaffrey remains Chaplain to the FBI and is a member of the FBI’s Advanced Crisis Intervention Team. He has been called upon to serve after such tragedies as the crash of US Air Flight 427, Egyptian Air, Kosovo War Crimes, 9/11 United Flight 93 in Shanksville, the line of duty deaths of two special agents and numerous interventions and critical incidents. Fr. McCaffrey has also served on several other diocesan boards and councils. You might be surprised to know that Fr. McCaffrey was a Deputy Wildlife Conservation Officer for the state of Pennsylvania and is a licensed private pilot with an instrument rating. He was elected Vice President of the National Association of Priest Pilots in 2015. He was also blessed with the opportunity to fly with the Blue Angels on June 4, 2014!

F W S, S P V I am originally from Brockway, PA in Jefferson County. After graduating high school I went to the University of Pittsburgh to study pre-med. I graduated with a BS degree in biology, but decided not to pursue medical school. God was calling me in a different direction. After working several years, I answered the call and entered the seminary for the Diocese of Pittsburgh. I had one year as a pre-theology student at Duquesne University while in formation at St. Paul Seminary. I was then sent by Bishop Wuerl to study theology in Rome, Italy. I studied for 5 years in Rome and was ordained to the priesthood on July 11, 1992.

I have had assignments in 5 parishes before my most recent assignment to the city parishes of New Castle. This assign- ment has been for the last 6 years. It has expanded to include being a sacramental minister for both Christ the King and St. James parishes. So as we begin the formation of this new grouping of parishes which includes St. Camillus, I come with some familiarity of the "territory." With God's grace and guidance, I look forward to working with my brother priests as we continue the work of Jesus Christ with and for his people in the greater part of Lawrence County. 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PASTORAL TEAM PAGE 3

Whoever Wishes To Be Great Among You Will Be Your Servant—The request of the sons of Zebedee, James and John, to be seated one on each side of Jesus when he reigns in glory sets off a firestorm among the Apostles. They argue about who is the greatest and are quickly focused on who has more power and authority than the others. Jesus reminds them that, while this may be the way of the world, they must be different. Whatever power and authority is theirs is given to them by God and must be used for the service of others. As the implementation of On Mission for The Church Alive! begins we will be looking to discover what our parish groupings need to best serve the faithful of our parishes and the communities where we live. We all love our parishes, but our love for Christ and the Church as a whole is even stronger. It may be a challenge to put aside what we are familiar with for the sake of the good of all, but we are called to trust in God’s guidance as he works to build up the Church. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to learn more and to stay informed. 29TH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME PAGE 9 T.G.I.F. (Teens Growing In Faith)
