2 PAUSE FOR THOUGHT

We are living in unprecedented times. Our freedom to move about and socialise has been curtailed to the extent that some are unable to work, others take risks as they go to work and others are forced to change their working patterns by operating from home. School children and students face long term disruption to their studies while the elderly and vulnerable deal with the logistical question of how they can get access to essential supplies.

We are being forced to reflect on what really matters. It is becoming increas- ingly clear that, however much we focus on ourselves and our right to live as we choose, we are part of a society where we need and depend on others playing their part to support our collective existence: from the healthcare workers who look after us; to those who make sure our shops are filled with food and the essentials for life; to the teachers who care for and educate our children; to those who develop new technologies to enhance our existence. We owe each other an enormous debt of gratitude. We need each other and should learn to value each other’s contribution as highly, if not more highly than our own.

The apostle Paul uses the analogy of a body to give a picture of how people should operate together in a community. Each individual, he said, is like a dif- ferent part of the body but all come together to make up the whole. Without any one of them the body might possibly still be able to function but would be incomplete. This is a model of God’s pattern for the whole of society. My prayer is that the crisis we face may make us into communities and a society which learn to value and care more deeply for every single one of its members.

Matthew

‘Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus’ (Philippians 4:6-7)
