The two teams will settle the differences in a best-of-three series that will be played in its entirety at Toyota Arena. Game 1 will kick off at 7 p.m. Friday, with Game 2 set for a 3 p.m. start Sunday. If a deciding Game 3 is needed, it will be played as a 15-minute mini- game following Sunday’s Game 2.

With the Fury hosting the first ever live game with fans in Southern California, seating will be assigned to meet social distancing requirements, and all those in attendance will have their temperatures screened before entry.

The championship series will feature two teams who are very familiar with one another, the Ontario Fury and the . The long-time west coast rivals have battled over the last eight years in two different leagues. And while the 14-time champion Sockers (none of those championships have come during the MASL era) dominated the Fury in the early years, Ontario has won the last three regular season meetings between the two clubs.

The two teams are also a contrast in styles. Ontario features a potent offense with a solid defense, while the Sockers have gotten this far in the playoffs by relying on its defense and goalkeeping.

Ontario’s offense has been paced all season by a quartet of threats, led by Juan Carlos Gonzalez (Quartz Hill HS, Taft College, Cal State San Bernardino). The sixth-year pro led the team in the regular season with 25 points (11 goals, 14 assists) in the team’s 10 regular season games. In the playoffs, he has continued his strong play with five goals and 11 assists. He was awarded the MASL’s inaugural Joseph Cairel Award, given to the player deemed the most passionate and inspiration in the league, as voted by league players, coaches and personnel.

Two of Gonzalez’s two favorite targets have also been putting up points this season. Last year’s MASL most valuable player (and first-team All-MASL this season), Franck Tayou had a team-leading 14 goals in the regular season and he has added nine more in the playoffs. Maicon de Abreu, who also scored 14 goals in the regular season, has added seven goals and two assists in the playoffs. Rounding out the attack is Justin Stinson, who has had five goals and three assists in the playoffs after scoring 10 goals (with seven assists) in the regular season. Stinson was also a first-team selection, with de Abreu landing on the third team.

On defense, the Fury have a set of veterans leading the way in front of goalkeeper Claysson de Lima. The Brazilian stepped into the starting role for the 2021 season, after serving as backup to perennial MASL all- Chris Toth past two seasons. De Lima has played every minute for the Fury this season, racking up a 5.17 goals against average and a .687 save percentage in his first year as a starter. For his efforts, he was voted the MASL Goalkeeper of the Year.

In front of him are veteran defenders Juan Topete (17 blocked shots), Robert Palmer (17 blocks), Uzi Tayou (13 blocks), , and team captain Israel Sesay – the only player to be part of the Fury all eight seasons. Palmer was voted the league’s Defender of the Year.

San Diego comes into the finals on a five-game winning streak dating back to the end of the regular season – with three of those wins coming in golden-goal overtime. The Sockers struggled in 2021, scoring only 41 goals in their 10- game regular season, with only two players (Leonardo de Oliveira and Brandon Escoto) reaching double digits in points.

In the playoffs, the Sockers have won each game by one goal, and are averaging an improved 5.3 goals per game in their four games. But it has been the Sockers’ defense that has been the story all season for San Diego. The Sockers only gave up 43 goals in the regular season, with no team scoring more than six goals against San Diego’s defense.

In goal, San Diego has a pair of MASL all-stars guarding the net. Their long-time starter, Boris Pardo, posted a 1-3 record in the regular season, but still posted a 4.17 goals against and a .737 save percentage. He shares the duties with William Vanzela, a member of the who is playing for San Diego on a one-year loan after Baltimore opted out of the 2021 season. Vanzela posted a 4.03 goals against with a .761 save percentage in the regular season. Both have been just as solid in the playoffs, posting identical 3.98 goals against averages, with Vanzela holding an advantage in save percentage (.789 to Pardo’s .640). 2021 player stats

The MASL features teams across North America, with teams playing coast-to-coast in the United States, Canada and Mexico. The MASL is currently incorporated as a 501(c)6 not for profit corporation formed to promote the business and sport of arena soccer.
