Financial Report 22 Perth Netball Association Annual Report 2018 2 PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2018 will be looked upon as a year of significant change for netball in this State and also for PNA. The year commenced with some changes in our PNA staff, as we farewelled Leanne Govorko and Monique Smith and welcomed Erica Irvine and Maddie Wood. Erica joined PNA as our Administration Officer, and Maddie as Competition Administrator, and both have made an outstanding contribution to our staff team this year. They have filled some big shoes and contributed to a very happy and productive team. I would like to acknowledge our two departing staff members. Leanne Govorko provided tireless and dedicated service to our members and was instrumental in setting up the MyNetball administration process for PNA. Monique Smith was with PNA for just over 12 months before her and her husband moved to Indonesia for his work commitments. Monique also made a significant and lasting contribution to our Association, particularly in the development of our No Limits program which remains very close to her heart. We wish both Leanne and Monique every success and happiness in the next chapters of their working life. I would also like to acknowledge the work of our other staff members over the last 12 months. Heather Felton continues to provide diligent and professional service to our membership in her role as Finance Officer, Charlie Watson whose good work ensures that our grounds and facilities are kept in outstanding condition, and Courtside Café manager Mercia Ullbricht who makes sure we have quality food and service during our competitions. And finally, Troy Starcevich PNA’s Executive Officer who has worked tirelessly over this past year, providing good leadership, sound advice, great support and direction to the staff, the Executive and to our members, achieving excellent results for our organisation. PNA is fortunate to have such loyal and hard-working staff. This year, PNA funded some important facility improvements. Airconditioning was installed in the main hall and the First Aid room which has been upgraded to the Umpires Room and Staff/Meeting Room. The PNA Courtside Café also received a significant facelift with a new front bench and display cabinets. PNA also introduced a new POS system which has significantly improved our café sales tracking and reporting. The Courtside Café continues to provide our members with quality food and beverage items during our Winter and Spring seasons, thanks to the hard-working canteen staff lead by our Manager Mercia Ullbricht. On the courts, our Winter competition continues to go from strength to strength. Whilst we are still wary of increasing our numbers, we were able to facilitate a small increase of 3% in teams from last year. Thanks once again to all of our clubs for their cooperation with the Expression of Interest process at the start of the year. Team numbers on Friday nights doubled again this year, with the introduction of an additional timeslot at 6.15pm. Over the past three years, we have been able to move three entire timeslots of NetSetGO and Primary school ages from Saturday to Friday, which has had a considerable impact on Saturday morning traffic and parking. Following a survey of our members, PNA competitions will break for 3 weeks over the July school holidays in 2019. There was strong support for our competition break to fall in line with school holidays and especially those of private schools which are now extending their mid-year school holidays to three weeks. Perth Netball Association Annual Report 2018 3 Our Spring competition also continues to grow, with Primary school age teams embracing the chance to continue playing netball in the warmer months. In 2017, a record 212 teams participated in competitions held over two nights, and this year we expect numbers to be similar. A particular focus for PNA this year was a major review of our umpiring standards and operations. To assist this process an Umpiring Review Committee was established with the aim of improving the communication between PNA and clubs on umpiring issues. I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who contributed to this process. PNA’s umpire coaches were able to provide coaching support to over 100 umpires during the season and provide feedback to clubs on their progress. 2018 was also a year of change for our neighbours, Netball WA. In April, the Netball WA Board passed Constitutional amendments that resulted in significant changes to the governance structure of netball in WA. These changes were communicated to our members at a special PNA Forum in May. A significant change affecting PNA will be the winding up of the Regions who have played an important role in netball development over the past 30 years. PNA has had a long history with the Perth Lions (formerly known as Perth Bullets), being its sole remaining member, and we take this opportunity to thank all past and present Perth Lions board members for their support over the last three decades. The Netball WA restructure will also see the introduction of a new Metro League Competition involving representative teams from metropolitan Associations. PNA has recently appointed Jo McKee as our Development Officer to lead this new program who is already preparing teams for this competition. We are pleased that the pilot of the Metro League Competition will be held February to April next year in one central venue, utilising both the State Netball Centre and the bottom outside 18 courts at Matthews Netball Centre. As we look ahead, there are some exciting changes planned for the facilities at Matthews. Everyone will remember the disappointment we experienced last year when the Town of Cambridge delayed its support for additional court lights. Late last year, PNA reviewed our needs and recommenced discussions with the Town on this subject. Our new proposal, which has been met with greater support from the Town so far, is to scale back the number of floodlit courts from 19 to 12 and to transform the grass courts to hard courts. Whilst the grass courts at Matthews hold sentimental value to some members, the cost to maintain them is becoming increasingly unsustainable, especially considering their limited use. We have recently lodged an application for grant funding which will hopefully result in the costs of this project being shared on an equal one- third basis between PNA, the Town of Cambridge and the State Government. I am pleased to announce that, on Monday night, the Town’s Community and Resources Committee unanimously supported our request for one-third funding from the Town of Cambridge. The full Council meets later this month to consider, and hopefully ratify, the Committee’s recommendation and then the grant application will be lodged with the State Government for final assessment. Successful grant applications are announced early next year. Should we be successful, works are scheduled to commence after the winter season in 2019. PNA has consulted with its members over the last couple of years on the review of our Constitution to ensure that it keeps pace with changes to our operations and continues to be relevant to our membership. Tonight, we are asking members to approve changes to our Constitution which Perth Netball Association Annual Report 2018 4 includes changes to the Executive Committee structure, including the addition of a Treasurer role and the removal of non-voting positions as well as the Marketing and Publicity roles from the Executive as these roles will or are now being undertaken by paid PNA staff. We believe that these changes will lead to a far more efficient and effective Executive Committee. Finally, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed in one way or another to the success of PNA this year. It takes many hours of volunteers’ time to run our competitions and I would sincerely like to acknowledge all our club committee members and their volunteers for your valuable contribution to netball at PNA. To my fellow PNA Executive members, I extend a heartfelt thank you for all your tireless efforts during the last 12 months. PNA is very fortunate to have such a dedicated and passionate Executive with a variety of skills to lead the Association. With everyone pulling in the same direction, it will only be onwards and upwards for 2019. I look forward to working with all our Clubs and members to ensure our netball competitions at Perth remain the biggest and the very best there is in the southern hemisphere and receiving your support to meet the many exciting opportunities and challenges that lie ahead. The Foundation is a dream come true for me. I made my debut with the West Coast Eagles in Round 5 of the 1996 AFL Season, at the age of 16 years, and played in the 2006 premiership team. My first passion isn’t sport however, its community work in helping to improve the lives of young Indigenous Australians. But using sport as a magnet to attract our young Aboriginal people into positive activities to improve their education and wellbeing is an amazing tool that must be utilised. I hope you find this submission of assistance, and agree that sport has a a vastly significant contribution to the health and wellbeing of Aboriginal people”. 2012 NAIDOC Person of the Year David Wirrpanda SUBMISSION SUMMARY - The David Wirrpanda Foundation was born from an idea our Director, David Wirrpanda, had to increase the retention and attendance of Aboriginal children in education. Extract from Hansard [ASSEMBLY — Thursday, 12 November 2020] p7929b-7929b Ms Mia Davies NETBALL WA Statement by Member for Central Wheatbelt MS M.J. DAVIES (Central Wheatbelt — Leader of the Nationals WA) [12.50 pm]: Last Friday, I had the honour of participating in a friendly match to mark the new Parliamentary Friends of Netball. I am pleased to be co-convener of the group along with Hon Samantha Rowe, and we joined members from both houses, media and other Netball Western Australia participants in an on-court battle. The post-match sore legs of some players proved that our best netball days may be long behind us. I am proud to report that Mia’s Fever claimed a one-goal win against Sam’s Shooting Stars. It was a very even match. However, the real winner was Netball WA, which, again, highlighted the outstanding work it is doing in communities across the state, particularly with its Shooting Stars program. Shooting Stars not only teaches girls about netball, but also uses the sport to drive more than 60 per cent of the program’s participants to an average school attendance rate of 80 per cent or above. West Coast Fever players are great role models for the Shooting Stars girls, and I thank team members Olivia Lewis and Emma Cosh for serving as coaches on the day. It was heartbreaking to watch the Fever just fall short of the title this year, but they showed outstanding dedication by spending three months in a Queensland COVID-19 hub to play in the Suncorp Super Netball season.
