PRESIDENT’S REPORT

2018 will be looked upon as a year of significant change for netball in this State and also for PNA.

The year commenced with some changes in our PNA staff, as we farewelled Leanne Govorko and Monique Smith and welcomed Erica Irvine and Maddie Wood. Erica joined PNA as our Administration Officer, and Maddie as Competition Administrator, and both have made an outstanding contribution to our staff team this year. They have filled some big shoes and contributed to a very happy and productive team.

I would like to acknowledge our two departing staff members. Leanne Govorko provided tireless and dedicated service to our members and was instrumental in setting up the MyNetball administration process for PNA. Monique Smith was with PNA for just over 12 months before her and her husband moved to Indonesia for his work commitments. Monique also made a significant and lasting contribution to our Association, particularly in the development of our No Limits program which remains very close to her heart. We wish both Leanne and Monique every success and happiness in the next chapters of their working life.

I would also like to acknowledge the work of our other staff members over the last 12 months. Heather Felton continues to provide diligent and professional service to our membership in her role as Finance Officer, Charlie Watson whose good work ensures that our grounds and facilities are kept in outstanding condition, and Courtside Café manager Mercia Ullbricht who makes sure we have quality food and service during our competitions. And finally, Troy Starcevich PNA’s Executive Officer who has worked tirelessly over this past year, providing good leadership, sound advice, great support and direction to the staff, the Executive and to our members, achieving excellent results for our organisation. PNA is fortunate to have such loyal and hard-working staff.

This year, PNA funded some important facility improvements. Airconditioning was installed in the main hall and the First Aid room which has been upgraded to the Umpires Room and Staff/Meeting Room. The PNA Courtside Café also received a significant facelift with a new front bench and display cabinets. PNA also introduced a new POS system which has significantly improved our café sales tracking and reporting. The Courtside Café continues to provide our members with quality food and beverage items during our Winter and Spring seasons, thanks to the hard-working canteen staff lead by our Manager Mercia Ullbricht.

On the courts, our Winter competition continues to go from strength to strength. Whilst we are still wary of increasing our numbers, we were able to facilitate a small increase of 3% in teams from last year. Thanks once again to all of our clubs for their cooperation with the Expression of Interest process at the start of the year. Team numbers on Friday nights doubled again this year, with the introduction of an additional timeslot at 6.15pm. Over the past three years, we have been able to move three entire timeslots of NetSetGO and Primary school ages from Saturday to Friday, which has had a considerable impact on Saturday morning traffic and parking.

Following a survey of our members, PNA competitions will break for 3 weeks over the July school holidays in 2019. There was strong support for our competition break to fall in line with school holidays and especially those of private schools which are now extending their mid-year school holidays to three weeks.

Perth Netball Association Annual Report 2018 3

Our Spring competition also continues to grow, with Primary school age teams embracing the chance to continue playing netball in the warmer months. In 2017, a record 212 teams participated in competitions held over two nights, and this year we expect numbers to be similar.

A particular focus for PNA this year was a major review of our umpiring standards and operations. To assist this process an Umpiring Review Committee was established with the aim of improving the communication between PNA and clubs on umpiring issues. I would like to extend a big thank you to everyone who contributed to this process. PNA’s umpire coaches were able to provide coaching support to over 100 umpires during the season and provide feedback to clubs on their progress.

2018 was also a year of change for our neighbours, Netball WA. In April, the Netball WA Board passed Constitutional amendments that resulted in significant changes to the governance structure of netball in WA. These changes were communicated to our members at a special PNA Forum in May. A significant change affecting PNA will be the winding up of the Regions who have played an important role in netball development over the past 30 years. PNA has had a long history with the Perth Lions (formerly known as Perth Bullets), being its sole remaining member, and we take this opportunity to thank all past and present Perth Lions board members for their support over the last three decades.

The Netball WA restructure will also see the introduction of a new Metro League Competition involving representative teams from metropolitan Associations. PNA has recently appointed Jo McKee as our Development Officer to lead this new program who is already preparing teams for this competition. We are pleased that the pilot of the Metro League Competition will be held February to April next year in one central venue, utilising both the State Netball Centre and the bottom outside 18 courts at Matthews Netball Centre.

As we look ahead, there are some exciting changes planned for the facilities at Matthews. Everyone will remember the disappointment we experienced last year when the Town of Cambridge delayed its support for additional court lights. Late last year, PNA reviewed our needs and recommenced discussions with the Town on this subject. Our new proposal, which has been met with greater support from the Town so far, is to scale back the number of floodlit courts from 19 to 12 and to transform the grass courts to hard courts. Whilst the grass courts at Matthews hold sentimental value to some members, the cost to maintain them is becoming increasingly unsustainable, especially considering their limited use. We have recently lodged an application for grant funding which will hopefully result in the costs of this project being shared on an equal one- third basis between PNA, the Town of Cambridge and the State Government.

I am pleased to announce that, on Monday night, the Town’s Community and Resources Committee unanimously supported our request for one-third funding from the Town of Cambridge. The full Council meets later this month to consider, and hopefully ratify, the Committee’s recommendation and then the grant application will be lodged with the State Government for final assessment. Successful grant applications are announced early next year. Should we be successful, works are scheduled to commence after the winter season in 2019.

PNA has consulted with its members over the last couple of years on the review of our Constitution to ensure that it keeps pace with changes to our operations and continues to be relevant to our membership. Tonight, we are asking members to approve changes to our Constitution which

Perth Netball Association Annual Report 2018 4 includes changes to the Executive Committee structure, including the addition of a Treasurer role and the removal of non-voting positions as well as the Marketing and Publicity roles from the Executive as these roles will or are now being undertaken by paid PNA staff. We believe that these changes will lead to a far more efficient and effective Executive Committee.

Finally, a big thank you to everyone who has contributed in one way or another to the success of PNA this year. It takes many hours of volunteers’ time to run our competitions and I would sincerely like to acknowledge all our club committee members and their volunteers for your valuable contribution to netball at PNA. To my fellow PNA Executive members, I extend a heartfelt thank you for all your tireless efforts during the last 12 months. PNA is very fortunate to have such a dedicated and passionate Executive with a variety of skills to lead the Association. With everyone pulling in the same direction, it will only be onwards and upwards for 2019.

I look forward to working with all our Clubs and members to ensure our netball competitions at Perth remain the biggest and the very best there is in the southern hemisphere and receiving your support to meet the many exciting opportunities and challenges that lie ahead.

In my first year as the Competition Coordinator I felt the grading and re-grading processes were transparent and accountable. All participants in the grading committees were professional and fair in their approach to the process. I believe there is always room for improvement and will be reviewing the process to ensure all divisions in all competitions are as competitive as possible for all teams.

I would like to thank the following members of the Grading Committees on behalf of the members of Perth Netball Association for volunteering their time and netball knowledge to assist at grading and regrading:

ASSISTANT COMPETITION COORDINATOR

The 2018 winter competition for Years 5 and 6 and NetSetGo year 3 and year 4 commenced on the weekend of Friday 11 May 2018. The Years 5 and 6 competitions have 3 grading rounds and 10 round robin rounds. This year NetSetGo played 5 rounds and then were rearranged to make the divisions more competitive for the last 7 rounds.

Our Friday afternoon competition continues to be very popular. This year we had 116 teams play on Friday an increase of 24% from 2017 (93 teams). On Saturday mornings, NetSetGo was staggered across 2 time slots, Year 5s continued to all play at 8am and Year 6s at 9am. Teams in 2018 Winter Competition:

Age Bracket 2018 2017 Year 3 (NSG) 63 52 Year 4 (NSG) 64 64 Year 5 73 82 Year 6 83 76 Total 283 274

Once again over 100 players participated in our goal shooting competition attempting to shoot as many goals as possible out of 10 attempts from various marked spots around the goal circle. Our winner scored 8 goals out of 10 attempts. Congratulations to Sophia Carbone.

This year’s Grading Committee comprised Vanessa Casement, Jennifer Saliacus, Gail Watson- Galbraith and Michelle Atwell. I would like to thank them for their significant contribution. The grading process is not easy, and these ladies give up their valuable time to evaluate all the available information to grade and re-grade teams into the most appropriate division.

Next year will see some changes to our primary school aged competitions as we add Year 2s and Year 5s to the NetSetGo competition. We continued to promulgate NSG the PNA WAY which helps to ensure all involved are aware of the NSG rules as they differ significantly to the more well-known netball rules. This will continue in the 2019 season.

I would also like to thank all the Perth Netball Association office staff who work tirelessly to ensure our competitions operate as smoothly as possible, especially Maddie Wood, Troy Starcevich and Erica Irvine.

Primary School Coaching Clinics Once again the primary school coaching clinics have proved to be very popular. Two clinics were held in the April holidays with a total of 449 girls participating.

The July school holiday clinic had 201 girls participating and we were also very fortunate to have two of the girls come down - Ingrid Colyer and on our last day of the clinic. The young girls were very eager to get the Fever stars to sign autographs.

PNA Will once again be running October school holiday clinic on the 3rd, 4th and 5th of October 2018.

NetSetGO Participation This is the association’s eighth year of running the NSG program. The skills program is aimed at year 1 - 2 primary school children.

Umpiring Coaching

This year our team undertook to provide umpire coaching to numerous Schools and Club Umpires throughout the Friday evening and Saturday morning winter competition. Written reports were provided to the various Schools and Club to provide them with ongoing feedback with respect to their umpires.

It should be noted a number of positive responses have been received with regards to the feedback provided by the Umpire Coaching which is extremely encouraging. It is hoped that the ongoing umpiring coaching service will continue to expand in the 2019 Winter Competition.

Umpire Coaches

I am also in debt for the ongoing support of the team, which undertook the coaching of umpires whether it was during the Friday evening or the Saturday morning competition.

 Mikayla Dunn  Tayla Clarke  Josephine Anthony  Bridget Camisa  Claudia Thompson  Olivia Caldow (Fridays)

Umpires Committee

I was a member of the PNA Umpires Committee which was created, encompassing all umpiring matters across the competition and involving clubs umpiring convenors to help improve umpiring standards within the association.

A number of umpire open forums with clubs were held to discuss matters in relation to umpiring within the PNA

Junior Umpires Clinic

Facilitated the PNA Umpiring Workshop during the 3rd to 5th July school holidays.

Perth Netball Association Trials

Attended the Perth Netball Association Trials at the Wanneroo Netball Association prior to the Netball WA Association Championships.

Other Items/Issues

Issues relating to bad parent/relatives on the sideline is still causing some concerns, but this has decreased somewhat compared with last year with the presence of the Umpiring Coaches.

Issues on Saturday morning NetSetGo competition with players still continuing to dive and wrestling for the ball from the opposition. Education to all coaches, umpires and players that this is not acceptable and that someone will become injured if this continues. Newsletter and weekly announcements still are beginning to have an impact.

Perth Netball Association Annual Report 2018 12

Jewellery, newsletters to all Clubs and Schools with regards to players wearing jewellery, this still continues to pose issues. Fit bits, bracelets, taped earrings, chains etc.

Parents are still continuing to have their children’s ears pierced and then coming to the courts and are expecting them to take to the court. Numerous emails and announcements are made each week regarding this.

Umpires officiating at these courts “MUST” undertake pregame checks to ensure that goal post padding is on, and that the players have also been checked to ensure that no one is wearing any jewellery.

There we issues with the different NSG Rules that were being applied to the competition, and after consultation with Junior Competition Convenor it was decided to correspond with all NSG Schools and Club’s and advise of the “NSG The PNA Way”.

Other information beneficial to the competition was attached directly to the scorecards to provide Clubs and Schools in relation to their game.

Numerous flyers outlining the rules for NetSetGo were also distributed in all time periods to assist coaches, managers, and family members. I feel this is having some impact, but if this information could be passed within the Clubs and Schools prior to the commencement of the 2019 Winter Competition

I would like to thank Carol Watson, Jenni Stawell, Fran Farrington, Troy Starcevich and the Executive for their ongoing support. I must also thank the office staff as well for their assistance this year.

MARKETING REPORT

This year, PNA welcomed Horizon Physiotherapy as our new match day physiotherapy provider. Greg Kerr and Chris Lowe and their team of qualified physiotherapists provided our members with valuable service during the Winter season.

We are also delighted to have re-signed an agreement with Priceline Pharmacies for another two years which includes branding on all of our goalpost padding at the Matthews Netball Centre. Priceline also conducted a health activation at Matthews on 18th August which offered free health checks to patrons.

Our partnership with Channel 9, via Netball WA, also entered its second year. As an added benefit of this arrangement, PNA members were able to access a special rate for West Coast Fever tickets to the home game at against the on 23rd June.

Also through our affiliation with Netball WA, PNA clubs continue to benefit greatly from the Belt-Up balls campaign courtesy of the Insurance Commission of WA (ICWA). Each year, ICWA donates 5 “Belt-Up” branded balls to each of our Open teams in a deal worth around $20,000 to our association.

Left: Bill Marmion, Jenni Stawell and PNA Open players with Belt Up balls

PNA would also like to acknowledge Boost Juice, Tony and Jason McGrath. The Boost Juice van is a welcome sight at the Matthews Netball Centre on match days, providing players and spectators with a variety of their trademark fruit smoothies, with a portion of each sale going back to PNA.

A big thank you also to Adrian Palm and the team at Perm-A-Pleat Sportswear for their wonderful support of our “No Limits” program this year. Perm-a-Pleat generously supplied our “No Limits” players with uniforms for this year’s Association Championships. Perm-a-Pleat do a fantastic job to ensure our teams look so professional on and off the court.

PNA is also grateful for the support we received this year from West Coast Construction and Demolition (the Mackey family) who very generously provided funding for our “No Limits” team to participate in the Association Championships.

We would also like to acknowledge some smaller but significant contributions this year;  Citrus WA supported our holiday clinics providing free oranges and mandarins to participants and also donated the prizes for our junior goal shooting competition;  Tutti Frutti Leederville (Darren Chan) donated prizes for our 2017 and 2018 Spring competitions.

A big thanks to all of these sponsors and supporters who have helped our association this year. With some significant changes on the way for the Matthews Netball Centre, PNA offers a unique opportunity for businesses to promote themselves to our engaged membership and we welcome any other approaches by potential sponsors.

PUBLICITY REPORT

2018 has been another successful one at Perth Netball Association from a publicity viewpoint, with the support of online and traditional media to share news and information with our members and the wider community.

Social Media: PNA’s Facebook following has grown 15% in the past 12 months, with 2,854 followers (as of 14/09/18), and continues to be a key vehicle for communication with our members and to facilitate connections between members. Its use as a “noticeboard” by members and clubs to recruit players and umpires has proven to be particularly valuable.

Posts on our Facebook page can reach over 3,000 people, and regularly exceeds 1,000 people. This wide reach will ensure quick communication of news and allow for strong promotion of new developments at PNA.

Website: PNA continues to use its website as our online platform for promoting the Association’s programs, activities, sponsors, news items, governing documents, policies and for other general information. Where possible, social media posts and E-Newsletter articles are linked back to the relevant section of the PNA website.

E-Newsletter: An email newsletter from the PNA Office to all registered PNA Members was introduced in August last year. The E-Newsletter mailing list currently sits at around 5,500 distinct email addresses. This allows PNA to communicate relevant information directly to individual members via their inbox or smartphone.

The E-Newsletter is published fortnightly during the season from March to September and then monthly in the off-season (October to February). It has proven to be very effective and well-read with open rates as high as 50% and consistently just under 40%. This is well above the cited industry average of 21%.

Traditional Media: PNA has a strong relationship with local newspapers – The Post and Western Suburbs Weekly (Community News Group), and have continued to use these publications to promote our activities to the local community.

A big thank you to all who have contributed to both the promotion of Perth Netball Association’s activities in 2018 and to quick and efficient distribution of news to our members.
