Combined heat and power generation allows primary energy to be put to highly efficient use, because the heat and power are generated right where they are needed – Vitobloc 200 CHP unit in the energy center of the Leica production and administration building in Wetzlar. POTENTIALS OF CHP ELECTRICITY GENERATION

Combined heat and power generation is an important component of the energy transition

The future belongs to new models of power generation and supply

fter the reactor catastrophe in Fukushima in 2011, the AGerman government decided to pull out of nuclear power, thereby initiating a widespread change in energy policy – all atomic power plants are to be fully shut down by 2022. Now that power generation in coal-fired power stations is also supposed to be reduced owing to high levels of pollution, former power supplies must be supplemented by decentralized power stations. 7

CHP a key technology Creating a decentralized power supply with small units that are easy and quick to control is necessary if the energy transition is to be successfully accomplished. One key tech- nology is combined heat and power generation. When power is generated centrally in large-scale power stations, up to two-thirds of the energy input is lost if the waste heat they generate is not put to further use or redirected. A much better use of the primary energy input can be achieved if heat and power are generated right where they are needed. The focus should be on making use of the waste heat produced by power generation.

Main objectives of the EU climate protection strategy The European Union has realized this and is demanding appropriate efforts from the member states. This is also im- perative if we want to achieve one of the main objectives of the EU climate protection strategy: energy savings of twenty percent by 2020 through efficient use of energy.

Technology finds its way into single-family homes and apartment houses Combined heat and power generation has long been well- established in large units, whether these large CHP units are for district heating, hospitals, or hotels. Now, the Vitovalor 300-P fuel cell heating unit and the Vitotwin 300-W and From a political viewpoint, power from photovoltaic production is going to play an ever greater part in supplying energy in the future.

Viessmann makes use of the more energy-efficient biological methanation.

Innovative system solution Methane gas can be stored for long periods in the gas grid, whose pipelines and caverns have a storage capacity of several months. This furthers the politi- cally desirable sector coupling of electric power, heat, and mobility: regardless of where it is produced, the gas can be used to supply heat, to produce electric power, or in natural gas cars as a cli- mate-friendly fuel. Power-to-gas is thus an innovative technology for making the energy transition a success.

CHP systems – like the Vitovalor 300-P – are officially subsidized by the German Federal Office of Economics and Export Control. POTENTIALS OF CHP ELECTRICITY GENERATION

ombined heat and power gener- Cation (CHP) is very important to the energy transition era because its high level of efficiency results in a good carbon footprint. Politicians in Brussels realized this years ago and therefore demanded that the member states take measures to promote the simulta- neous generation of heat and power. However, subsidies differ greatly among the EU countries. In Germany for instance, government incentives are determined by the Renewable Energies Act (EEC) or the Combined Heat and Power Generation Act (KWKG).

Iconic Freezer Study proves that it promotes sales

The Iconic half-height freezer provides an excellent view of products and optimizes the presentation of frozen goods at the point of sale. At the same time, it facilitates access to the merchandise. People can take pizza, fish and other products out of the cabinet without having to bend over.

Eight percent increase in sales A study conducted by Edeka Schlemmer Markt Struve in Hamburg showed that customers are delighted by the freezer. The greatest advantage for 78 percent of the 200 customers surveyed was the good view of the products. In the very first month after it was installed, sales of frozen goods rose by eight percent.

In the summer months, surplus heat is extracted from the rooms by a 20-kilo- meter pipe system in the concrete ceilings and fed to the storage system. Thus the system also helps cool the rooms and the summer heat is saved to provide heat in the wintertime. When the cold season begins and heat is required, the Vitocal 300-G Pro brine/ water heat pump extracts the heat stored in the ice storage system and feeds it into the heating system.
