After losing the toss we found ourselves batting on another soft green track. Only Martin Lower looked comfortable as Rus- sell jagged the ball off the seam. Lower went on to complete his maiden half century for his new club but unfortunately fell straight after this achievement. Vick- erman, Mulholland and Armstrong all managed scores in the teens as we limped our way to 135. all out. There may have been doom and gloom amongst cer- Chinese water tor- tain sections of the crowd but there was none to be turer, Jon Barnes found amongst the Darlington side who are beginning to show a fighting spirit and belief not seen for many years. Only Neil Russell (24 off 63 balls) showed any resistance to the “Chinese water torture” bowl- ing of Jonny Barnes. Barnes just kept putting the ball on a handkerchief tar- get, moving it to leg and off and returned figures of 16 overs, 9 maidens and 5 for 22. Armstrong added 3 wickets of his own for just 13 and the Champi- ons were back in the dressing room for just 81 in 33 overs. A tremendous victory to set the side up for their bank Holiday trip to Normanby Hall. Peter Armstrong let the opposition know we were coming through anyway! He packed his car with the water sopper from Doug Mulholland, bowling hero Feethams and went through to Normanby to mop up the pitch! Above and beyond the call of duty? Not to Pete and his trusty green wellied companion, Doug Mulholland. When the rest of the team arrived the ground looked great, soaked in sunshine and seemingly dry. Well done lads, great job. Another lost toss and were batting again. With a few play- ers missing, Jack Vickerman (25) and Danny Morgans (35) opened up and laid the foundation of our total. When both openers were dismissed Liam Coates and Sam Hardy had a mix up over a quick single and hardy was run out. Barnes went soon after and Dobson joined Coates. Janakanthe was turning the ball prodigiously and their other pro, Leigh Beaumont was firing it flat at the two young batsmen. The pair worked hard at progressing the score against some excellent spin bowling. When Coates was adjudged LBW our score was looking a little light. Dobson then took the attack to the bowlers hitting several good boundaries and dispatching the Sri Lankan spinner out of the ground and into the houses for 6. A reverse sweep off the last ball flew to the boundary and we finished on a respectable 166 for 5. Dobbo ending on 30 not out. The home supporters were cock a hoop at this total to chase, reckoning their side would eas- ily chase it down. They had reckoned without the deadly triumvirate of Barnes, Mulholland and Armstrong. Continued on page 3 Danny Morgans, solid start Jack Vickerman played some great drives Continued from page 2 Barnes was miserly again but it was deadly Doug who was on song. He bowled with real conviction and jagged the ball off the seam at will. One by one their star batsmen were dismissed by the three bowling assassins. A frustrated Normanby side took exception to our appeals and the fact that the umpires gave the batsmen out and the atmosphere became tense both on and off the field. The last over came and we needed just one wicket with the home side 103 for 9. Mulholland had changed to spin and with the fourth ball of the over tempted Chris Shepherd into a rash slog. Mulholland flung himself to his right taking a superb caught and bowl and bagging another spectacular victory for the Quakers. 40 points from an excellent week- end’s cricket for Darlington. Two Legged weekend sees a win and a loss for the 2nd Team The second eleven had a strange “European Champions League” style double week- end as the played Northallerton homer and away! Good weekend for Dan Bald- win On Saturday at Farnedale Avenue, we were outplayed losing by 109 runs. Set 214 by the home side Darling- ton were bowled out for just 105. Only Danny Baldwin (4 for 37) and Keith barker with 51 runs came out of the match with any glory. It would be difficult to raise morale for the return leg at Dependable Keith Barker Feethams on Monday. This is what they did do how- ever. Mark Stainsby with 31 and useful contributions from the rest of the team saw us through to 150 for 7 at tea. In reply a fantastic bowling performance from Dan Baldwin with a five wicket haul and a brace apiece for Tom, Chapman and Stainsby enabled us to gain revenge and bowl the visitors out for 120 to gain a much needed victory. The word on Twitter was that Tom Chapman bowled with some serious “wheels” (to those of us not up with the modern speak of today's young cricketers that means a good pace!) BRACE OF VICTORIES FOR UNDER 15S Friday 1st June Darlington continues their impressive cup form with a comfortable away win at Barnard Castle ,batting first the hosts could only post a score of 59 in their 20 overs thanks to an impressive spell of bowling from all of the visiting bowlers. Pick of the bowlers was Will Heathcoat who claimed 4 for 10 and Sam Gell ,Sam Leeming and David Evans who all claimed a wicket each. In the final over Darlington under 11 Leo Giacomoni claimed a wicked which should allow him to brag to all of his friends for a long time to come. In reply Darlington started very well with Jamie Kirkbride playing some glorious cover drives before in a moment of mad- ness he ran himself out. Tom Pickering his opening partner plundered the home bowling scoring a quick fire 38no to secure victory for the team. Sam Leaming Sunday 3rd June Back to league action for the undefeated U15 squad and another impressive victory to re- port ,missing a few regulars Darlington fielded first and restricted Blackhall to 79 for 4 in the 20 overs, after Sam leeming took a wicket in the first over the hosts were always in con- trol .Will Heathcoat followed up his 4 wickets on the Friday night fixture to post another im- pressive 1 for 6 and Sam Gell and Callum Dean were the mainstay of the Darlington attack with smart catches from Tom Wilkins and Will Heathcoat . In reply Darlington got off to a flying start with Sam Gell and Tom Pickering attacking the visitors bowling from the off and with only a few runs required Sam Gell was smartly caught for 42 ,Tom Pickering hit the winning runs to finish on an im- pressive 32no with Tom Sowerby 1no at the close. Chris Sowerby (Manager) I first met Jonny Barnes a long time ago when I was playing cricket for Darlington RA.. For the first time in the Railwaymen’s history I started an Under 18 side and we played in the Durham County League U 18s competition. Dragged along by his elder brother Chris who hit the ball harder than anyone I ever saw, Jonny was the quieter of the two brothers. It soon became obvious that there was something special about the wiry 13 year old who wanted to be a part of the team alongside the likes of Gerard Hull, Duncan Johnson and Peter Cartwright.
