2020/2021 Albert Eden Local Grant Round Two LG2101-212 Jessica Fenton Under the umbrella of Action Education Legal status: Activity focus: Arts and culture Conflicts of interest: N/A Project: JAFA Poetry Slam Location: Cityside Baptist Church, 8 Mount Eden Road Summary: JAFA Poetry Slams provides high quality community focused poetry events for all ages in Auckland central. The JAFA Poetry Slam is Auckland's only regular poetry slam, providing a safe space for a diverse range of writers and audiences to share their stories and participate in the entertainment. A typical night includes an open mic for any community members to read, a featured professional poet, and an open competitive poetry slam of up to 10 poets judged by 5 volunteer members of the audience. Expertise: Our organisation is run and managed by 5 professional performance poets who have decades of experience and awards between them, both nationally and internationally. We have been successfully running JAFA Poetry events since 2015 across Tāmaki Makaurau before finding our long-term home in Mount Eden in 2018. Our organisers also host, organise, perform, teach and facilitate across a wide range of arts events spaces locally, including Auckland Fringe, WORD The Frontline, University of Auckland, AUT, Basement Theatre, MIT, Going West Writers Festival, Auckland Readers and Writers Festival, and Auckland Pride. Dates: 01/05/2021 - 01/12/2021 Rain dates: - People reached: 600 % of participants from Local Board 70 % Promotion: We would acknowledge the local board's contribution in social media events and postings, including a logo on posters, in our monthly newsletter, and vocally at each event. Community benefits Identified community outcomes: The JAFA Poetry Slam is a community organisation, run by five staff who host monthly events accessible to all ages at a non-bar, smoke free venue. Our aim is to provide our audience and participants with a safe, nurturing community where voices, stories and identities can be shared and celebrated. Through our open mics, poetry slams, professional featured poets, and writing workshops, writers and performers across a wide range of skill levels develop and hone their craft. The winners of our Auckland Regional Slam win the opportunity to represent Auckland at the National Poetry Slam: where they elevate their craft, network with other writers, and have the opportunity to gain national recognition. Audience members at slams are encouraged to vocally participate and respond to the work being performed, either as a judge of the poetry or by cheering or booing to sway the judges scores. This actively fosters a sense of camaraderie, collaboration and community where everyone is participating in the liveliness of the event. Alignment with local board priorities: • We are able to come together to support each other, and to celebrate our diversity. The JAFA Poetry Slam is a local Albert-Eden event that takes place monthly in Mount Eden and provides a safe space for diverse range of writers and performers from across Auckland to share their work on our open mic and in our poetry slam with their community. This is an uncensored event but hate speech is not tolerated. These events are open to all ages, with an open mic that is open to everyone and a slam competition that is 18+. This age restriction is in place as we want to provide a space for youth poets to grow as adult poets and it is an age requirement for the New Zealand National Poetry Slam, which is an annual competition we send representatives to. Many of our writer’s stories speak to their identities, cultures, mental health, sexual orientation, spirituality, and whakakapapa. Social issues and personal expression are explored at our monthly events and all of these subjects come together in the slam to be shared, acknowledged, and celebrated by the community. We have a range of ages represented at our events and host both individual and team competitions, providing participants the opportunity to work and collaborate together. We have built this community in Mt Eden over the course of 3 years, when we found a home for this event at Cityside Baptist Church in 2018.
