PRESIDENT’S REPORT 2006/07

The 2006/07 season saw the Ramblers field a fifth side for only the 2nd year in the club's long history. The season also saw a number of new players to the club as well as the return of some familiar faces.

The club, for the third year running, came away with a Premiership – a great effort for the E Grade! Well done to Forbes Thompson who took over the captaincy when it was difficult getting a team together, but with the help of guys like Geoff (Gyprock) Jenner, David (Bubbles) Neil and the selectors, the team that was put on the park for much of the season was extremely competitive. Congratulations to the entire team!

The D Grade was another success story for the club this season. Sam Davenport and Dave Miller (Captain) put together a side week-in, week-out which saw it finish 2nd on the ladder at the end of the regular season, only to lose in the Grand Final. A big congratulations goes out to Sam and Dave along with the rest of the team. A number of the other Rambler teams could do well to play with the enthusiasm and teamwork that these guys have displayed all season. There's a lot of talent in that team and we as a club look forward to seeing that again in the coming seasons.

The A Grade side may feel like this season was the one that got away to a degree. Some close games that went the wrong way meant the side finished in the middle of the pack. Denton Basey again did a great job captaining the side and had a tough job ahead of him with a somewhat depleted bowling attack. One of the most promising aspects was the effort this year with the team consistently scoring over 200 runs per innings. I believe that this team, along with the rest of the teams, have a lot to look forward to next season.

The B Grade were probably the surprise packet this season for the club. Whilst they missed out on the finals, Adrian (Howie) Howard with help from Dave Wright and Phil Mayes did an amazing job to help get the team to 5 wins for the year, and could count themselves unlucky not to get another here or there. From all reports, the team enjoyed a great on-field and off-field atmosphere which should be commended.

The C Grade after their promotion to Section 5 this year, did a great job and only narrowly missed a trip to the finals. Nat Elliott lead the side this year and to nearly come up again for finals in a higher section signifies a great effort from the captain and the guys. A highlight for the team was scoring over 400 in a single innings, according to Bubbles, the 2nd highest Ramblers score in club history.

Its fair to say that the club would have fielded far less teams this season if it weren't for the efforts by the selectors (Adrian (Howie) Howard, Phil Mayes and Wayne (the Hoff) Hasel) along with guys like Geoff (Gyprock) Jenner and Tony Benson to name a couple. The many phone calls needed this year to find guys was incredible and took a huge amount of time and effort. A fantastic effort by all.

A special thanks goes to two special members of the club who do a huge amount of work around the club and don't get the benefit of playing on a Saturday – Meredith Jenner and Tony Benson. Meredith's dedication to the running of the club has just been outstanding. Her ability to organise, chase-up and most importantly, follow through with tasks assigned to her (and others' at times!) has made her an integral part of the club. Tony was again club coach this season and his efforts on a Wednesday night at practice, on a Saturday travelling from ground to ground and also throughout the week behind the scenes is greatly appreciated.

More thanks go out to the Committee this year, David (Bubbles) Neil as our official Secretary and liaison with the Association, Meredith Jenner, Paul Durham, Sam Davenport, Phil Mayes and Adrian (Howie) Howard all did a great job in their various roles. The club doesn't function without people willing to dedicate their time to the running of the club and I encourage everyone at the club to put their hand up and take on a role next season.

Scott Brodie highlights what's needed at a sporting club. Scott, who was in outstanding form early in the season, had a major injury setback which saw him sit out the season. Scott, without fail, attended each practice and ran the guys padding up, he hung around for the BBQ on selection nights, went out and scored for the C Grade every Saturday and then went back for a drink at the Blackwood Football Club. An outstanding effort and one that everyone should take note of. Thanks Scott!

Thanks to the Blackwood Football Club for again having us for our functions and after game drinks on a Saturday. This year's Quiz Night was an outstanding success with a huge amount of money raised and was well attended by players and friends/family. The prizes and auction items supplied by the players made a huge difference and thanks go to all those who donated and who came along, but especially Meredith Jenner who put in a huge amount of time in coming up with the questions, organising the Quiz Master (Garry MacPhie) and making sure things ran smoothly on the night. The club also had an Ashes Family Day up at the Footy Club where we ran a BBQ and watched the Adelaide Ashes Test Match and we intend to hold our 100 Club Dinner in the off season to get everyone together then.

Looking to the future, there's a huge amount to look forward to. The club has a strong mix of younger players along with experienced players willing to share their knowledge. Off the field, the club has done a great job with the finances and that's in large part to the new fees structure and participation by players in club functions. Next season brings its new challenges and opportunities and finals appearances for all the teams should be a goal that is achievable.

PLAYER OF THE YEAR Congratulations to Scott Sharland on winning the 2006/07 Player of the Year Award with 14 votes. Scott is a member of the victorious E Grade Premiership team this season!

Scott has previously won this award in 1996/97 and 1998/99. Since joining the club in 1996/97 Scott has played 37 games, scored 1620 runs and taken 75 . He has scored four centuries, including a highest score of 238 runs. Scott also holds the B Grade fifth record partnership of 168 with Adrian Cassidy.

Scott has taken five or more wickets on six occasions, including 7 wickets in the E Grade Semi Final this season. He has previously won both the C Grade Batting and Bowling Trophies and was a member of the 1998/99 A Grade Premiership team.

After an absence from the club for a number of years, Scott has made a welcome return and we hope that he continues to play for many seasons to come! Well done Scott!

A GRADE PLAYER OF THE YEAR Congratulations to Karl Gill on winning the A Grade Player of the Year Award with 11 votes. Since commencing in the 1979/80 season Karl has played 194 games, scored 5260 runs and taken 5 wickets.

He has achieved a lot in his career with the Ramblers. In the past he has won Batting Trophies in both the A and B Grade, captained both A and B Grade sides and also captained the Association team.

Karl has scored four centuries for the club, including a double century against Kenilworth in the B Grade. He also holds the B Grade record opening partnership of 267 with Jarrad Benson.

Now in his forties, Karl is still a very handy batsman who enjoys getting stuck into the bowlers and is a valuable member of the A Grade. Congratulations Karl!

CLUBMAN AWARD

The Glen Watchman Clubman Award for 2006/07 has been won by Meredith Jenner. Meredith's list of achievements this season show just how important she is to the club. Meredith has been on the Committee again this season, made a huge effort with organising the Quiz Night, again has spent hours organising the Declaration, instigated the Ashes Day, has liaised with the Blackwood Football Club for each of the club's functions and comes out each Saturday, often scoring for the team she is watching. A big “thanks” on behalf of the entire club!

MOST PROMISING JUNIOR AWARD

Andrew Work has won the Hayden Hill Memorial Trophy for the Most Promising Junior for 2006/07. Since joining the club from Coromandel in 2004 Andrew has played 33 games, scored 617 runs and taken 26 wickets.

Andrew has played mainly in the B Grade to date and has developed into a consistent batsman and a more than useful bowler, taking out the B Grade Bowling Trophy this season. He will be a welcome addition to the A Grade in years to come.

Well done Andrew!

DOUBLE WICKET COMPETITION The Double Wicket Competition was not held this season due to a lack of interest and steadily falling attendance over the last few years. If you would like to see the Double Wicket Competition held next season, please talk to the Club President to register your interest in taking part.

DUCK CLUB The Captain of the 2006/07 Duck Club and winner of the perpetual trophy is Tom Jeffries. Although Tom ‘only’ made 3 ducks, he finished the season with the impressive figures of 1 run from 4 innings! Close competition was provided by Wayne (the Hoff) Hasel, who has been given the Vice Captaincy. Wayne also scored 3 ducks but narrowly missed out on the Captaincy by making 9 runs from 5 innings in the C Grade as well as a mighty 13 in the E Grade!

Also included in the squad and on 3 ducks each are Sam Davenport and Luke Luey. Despite making the same number of ducks they were removed from contention for the trophy by making 70 (Sam) and 46 (Luke) runs during the season.

The remaining 8 members of the 12-man squad, on 2 ducks each, are Clae Murray (2 runs), Glen Rosie (17 runs), Dave Miller (32 runs), Tim Owen (42 runs), Pat Anderson (45 runs), Denton Basey (91 runs), Phil Mayes (107 runs) and Tom Muir (137 runs).

Glenn Bailey (222 runs) and Scott Bailey (169) are placed on reserve for the squad in case of injury to body or pride! They also scored 2 ducks but missed out on selection for making more than 150 runs. Well done to the squad and we will see you out early to practice next year!!!

BBQ MAN OF THE YEAR The BBQ Man of the Year Award this year goes to Andrew Jenner. During the finals Andrew organised meat, bread, potatoes and onions for players and supporters. He also helped during the season. Congratulations Andrew!

LIFE MEMBERSHIP Congratulations to Andrew Jenner, who has this year become the 32nd player to achieve Life Membership of the Coromandel Ramblers Cricket Club. Andrew commenced playing in 1974/75, some 32 years ago. Currently he has played 157 games, scored 2146 runs and taken 140 wickets. He has also been a member of Premiership teams in the D Grade in 2004/05 and the E Grade this season.

Andrew won the B Grade Bowling Trophy in 1977/78 and the C Grade Bowling Trophy in 1996/97. He also holds the eighth wicket record partnership for the C B Grade, March 1977 Grade of 104 with Steve Williams.

Andrew has taken five or more wickets on four occasions. Andrew has taken a hat-trick, as has his son Michael. This would be a rare feat in most clubs, except the Ramblers where Des, Brett and Ben Chilton have also taken hat-tricks.

As a player Andrew was an opening bowler in his younger days and has always been a handy batsman, mainly in the middle order. He has been known to take the odd ‘blinder’ in slips. He has a good cricket brain and is always thinking about tactics, field placings and bowling changes.

Semi Final – Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated ICC Sharks IV on 1st innings

Coromandel Ramblers IV 193. Tyler Harman continued his good form into the final scoring 31, although the bowling was tidy and difficult to score runs off. Josh Haussen came in as first drop and scored a solid 40. Tate Murray managed to hold his wicket while others fell around him and he finished on 28. Simon Billett came in and ruined the bowler’s tidy figures, smashing his way to 36. Sam Davenport helped the tail wag and contributed with 25*. We knew ICC Sharks were capable of making a big total therefore 193 was a good score and left them with a big run chase.

ICC Sharks IV 150. We got off to a flying start on the second day with Josh Haussen getting a run out in the first over of the day. David Agnew bowled extremely well and kept the batsman honest. He was unlucky not to get a wicket having 2 dropped catches off his bowling. Joel Harman (3/38) bowled a good line and put pressure on the ICC Sharks middle order. Due to the pressure of the finals we started to fumble and make mistakes in the field for the first time this season. We had to work hard to stay positive and focus to get back on top. David Miller only bowled a short spell but put the ball on the spot and picked up an important wicket of a batsman that was finding the boundary a bit too easily. Sam Davenport (3/16) bowled well all day and managed to clean up the tail, putting us through to the Grand Final.

Grand Final – Keswick IV defeated Coromandel Ramblers IV on 1st innings

Coromandel Ramblers IV 65. We got off to a bad start and found ourselves 2/15 with a lot of work ahead of us. For a team that rarely found it hard to make runs we had a bad day out with only 3 batsman reaching double figures. With a combination of good bowling and some silly shots played we found ourselves all out for a disappointing 65, with Simon Billett top scoring with 14.

Keswick IV 171. We didn’t let our score bring our spirits down though and went out to field with nothing to lose. Keswick, who thought they already had it in the bag, were stunned to find their scorebook at 6/29. With plenty of positive vibes we knew we had to bowl tight and field extremely well to win the game. The bowling was right on the mark, unfortunately we put down a couple of important catches and a snick caught behind that was not given was also quite costly. Keswick passed our total but we still had a chance to get them all out with an opportunity to win the game outright in the second innings. Unfortunately things did not go our way with Keswick eventually winning the game. Everyone fought hard but it came down to just not scoring a big enough total. Tyler Harman was the best of the bowlers finishing with 5/55.

Josh Haussen has been awarded Player of the Finals for his excellence and enthusiasm in the field.

Although we didn’t win the grand final it was definitely a season not to forget, with many personal achievements, player debuts and plenty of laughs along the way. Hope to see you all out next season to get our revenge. D Grade Grand Final Team (left to right). The E Grade won the Premiership for the 1st time in only the Ramblers 2nd year with a fifth side.

Semi-Final v Coromandel We had a great day bowling, getting Coromandel out for only 63 runs with the top score being 25 extras. Scott Sharland was in great form with 7/12 and Michael Breton had 1/9. Geoff Jenner got hit for a 4 off the first ball, then bowled the next 7 overs with no runs for 2 wickets.

We had 11 overs to face on day one and were in big trouble at 5/9, finishing the day at 5/10, although we had a few LBW’s that were unlucky to be given out. The next day Michael Breton (33) and Eddie MgGough (13) had a good partnership of 36 that helped us over the line. Brett Brodie hit the winning runs with a boundary.

Grand Final v Keswick This was a great team effort with every player contributing with wickets, catches, run-outs and runs. Every player gave their best and we got the rewards.

The pressure from the bowlers was great with Keswick finding it hard to get runs. All the bowlers performed well with Andy Jenner 3/16, Geoff Jenner 3/19, Forbes Thompson 1/1, Scott Sharland 1/12 and Phil Megson 1/15. Great catches were taken by Scott Sharland (2), Eddie McGough (2), Phil Megson, Gary Speak, Tom Muir and Brett Brodie. One of the best run-outs you could see was from Gary Speak who chased the ball down and smashed the stumps down from in the deep with a direct hit.

We faced 6 overs on the Saturday night and were 0/18 after a great effort from Phil Megson and Eddie McGough. We looked a bit shaky on the Sunday at 4/44, but a great partnership of 58 from Gary Speak (45 ) and Scott Sharland (26) got us over the line.

Scott Sharland has been awarded Player of the Finals for his contribution with the ball in the Semi Final and the bat in the Grand Final. Well done and thanks to all the Premiership team and to the many other players who contributed throughout the year.

The 2006/07 season was a frustrating one for the Coromandel Ramblers A Grade side. We had the potential this season to repeat if not better our successes from the 2005/06 season, with a side strengthened by recruitments and maturing juniors. Our season began with a loss but with the encouraging sign that we managed to amass over 200 runs, which was something we had only managed four times in the previous season. Our good form with the bat continued, especially for Paul Durham who had knocked up over 300 runs by Christmas including his maiden century (against Warradale).

At the Christmas break we were sitting just outside the top four and with promising signs that our best cricket was ahead. Unfortunately the remainder of our season did not go according to our plans. We struggled to find consistency as a team and we mixed some excellent bowling and fielding efforts with letting other teams amass over 330. With the bat over the year we made over 300 ourselves against Warradale but in another game were bowled out for under 70. Our failure to consistently bat and bowl in partnerships meant that without one special individual performance per game we were often in vulnerable positions.

Our season had some spectacularly high points for the team as well as for some individuals. Paul Durham had a stellar year with the bat and was consistently the back bone of our line up, resulting in him taking home the Batting Trophy. Karl Gill also had a great year, making plenty of runs in typically fast time. Lee Simpson made a very successful comeback to the club including a very gutsy ton. Scott Bailey, Ben Stallard, Nick Work and Dave Benson also chipped in with timely knocks throughout the season. Mike Jenner was a welcome inclusion to the A Grade side at the beginning of the year and markedly bolstered our bowling attack. Glen Rosie was ever dependable with the ball and bowled well in tandem with Nick Work, who should be earmarked as the future opening bowler for the Ramblers. The return of Matt Smith later in the season was a great injection for both our bowling and batting stocks. This season I (Denton Basey) received the Bowling Trophy. The standard of fielding was also good throughout the year. Ben Stallard in particular had an excellent year in the field, receiving the Fielding Trophy.

Some of our better batting performances for the year include: Paul Durham 126* vs Warradale Lee Simpson 103 vs Mitchell Park Paul Durham 89 vs North Haven Dave Benson 61 vs North Haven Scott Bailey 63 vs Plympton Footballers Karl Gill 60 vs ICC Sharks Justin Calderbank 57* vs Glenelg ANA Ben Stallard 56 vs Western Youth Lee Simpson 55 vs North Haven Karl Gill 55 vs Coromandel Karl Gill 55 vs Mitchell Park.

Some of our better bowling performances for the year include: Denton Basey 5/39 vs North Haven Denton Basey 5/39 vs Warradale Justin Calderbank 4/10 vs ICC Sharks Matt Smith 3/36 vs Morphettville Park Glenn Bailey 4/52 vs Warradale.

This year the Captain’s Trophy has been awarded to Nick Work. Nick has shown a new maturity this year and has taken a more senior role in the team. He has learned from both coaches and team mates and made a very valuable contribution with both the bat and ball. He will be one of the most valuable players for the Ramblers A Grade in the coming years.

Although finishing in the middle of the premiership table this year we should take positives from this season. We should learn from our mistakes and ensure that an opportunity such as the one presented this year does not pass us by again.

The A Grade team would like to sincerely thank Meredith Jenner for coming to the games and scoring, your help is greatly appreciated on game day.

I have had a lot of fun captaining the Coromandel Ramblers A Grade side this year and feel honoured to have done so. Thank you to all of those I have been privileged to play with this year and I look forward to seeing you all out there again next year.

B GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

Season 2006/07 has been a year of improvement for the Section 2 team. Finishing 6th on the ladder with 5 wins, 6 losses and significantly 0 outright losses has been recognised as a significant improvement on previous seasons. If not for some unlucky losses against Coromandel and Sheidow Park during the season, finals might have been an option -something that was not realistically considered at the beginning of the season.

Firstly I would like to thank all 35 players that crossed the line for us this year (plus all of our various sub-fielders throughout the year). As captain it could have been quite a challenge to manage the team with such a turnover of players, but to everyone's credit we managed quite well and played all of our games in the correct spirit.

The Senior Players of the team also made my job a lot easier, particularly David Wright and Phil Mayes. David Wright took on the Vice Captain role at the beginning of the year as well as being the "General" behind the stumps making the majority of field settings, while Phil Mayes took on the Captaincy on a couple of occasions in the absence of both myself and David. Both David and Phil performed very well on and off the field and I am very thankful of their efforts.

On the field this season several individual performances can be highlighted alongside some of our great team performances. With the bat, I (Adrian Howard) took the Batting Trophy in the last game. However, we had several players throughout the year that made significant contributions, including Nick Work with his 90 vs Kenilworth at Hawthorndene Oval in one of his 3 games in the Section 2 side. To Nick's credit he played Section 1 for the majority of the year and performed very well up there. While it would have been great to have Nick in the Section 2 team for the season, it is a bonus for the club to have Nick performing well and mixing it with the best in Section 1.

James Forde is a new player to the club, who came out during the year as a fill-in to help us out on a hot day when we couldn't find a player - he went on to make 56* that game and followed it up with an 82 against Plympton Footballers. James has shown that he is a very good batsman and also showed a fair bit with the ball in the last few games. Should he decide to come out for a hit next season I'm sure James could easily find similar success playing in Section 1.

With the ball we have also had a number of excellent efforts. Andrew Work has developed himself into an excellent new ball bowler and in the 2nd half of the season particularly has bowled brilliantly to take out the Bowling Trophy. Andrew always shows immense enthusiasm to bowl, bat, setup - anything to do with cricket. Quite often it's very difficult to get the ball out of his hands. As the season has progressed Andrew has developed from a bowler that would get the odd wicket, move it around a bit, but always provide the odd loose one to get put away. Andrew has really minimised those loose balls now and has been bowling a real tight line, creating pressure and opportunities for himself and others with his tight bowling. Like his brother Nick, Andrew has shown a lot of potential and will provide the club with a lot of Section 1 service in the coming years.

Great bowling efforts from Luke Luey 5/34 vs Panorama, Andrew Work 5/35 vs Sheidow Park and Mark Willis 5/52 vs Sheidow Park have been backed up with several 4 wicket innings by Andrew Work, Andrew Gilkes, Shane Kennedy and Luke Luey. Another player that deserves a mention is Glenn Bailey for his 2nd half of the season. While Glenn didn't take any "bags of wickets", he did bowl extremely well, several times in very tight situations and created several opportunities for us this year. Eddie McGough is another young bowler that shows a great potential, unfortunately due to availability and injury Eddie only played a handful of games in Section 2 this year. Like Nick and Andrew Work, Eddie has shown enough that I'm convinced he will form part of a very strong bowling line-up in our A Grade side for many years to come.

Our bowling proved to be quite a strength this season, but to back it up we had a very strong fielding side, with Glenn Bailey taking out the Fielding Trophy this season. Dave Wright was excellent in the gloves, and with very strong off and on side fielders our bowlers were backed up very well. There will always be catches taken and dropped, but some of the exceptional catches taken this year are as good as they get. Adrian Cassidy took a brilliant diving gully catch at Panorama, only to be outdone by Luke Luey taking the best catch I've ever seen at short mid on in the same game. Luke was to be outdone by Phil Mayes a couple of games later - while I didn't play that game, I've been assured that his catch was absolutely brilliant and equally as good if not better than Luke’s (and it wasn't even Phil that told me!) The other noticeable thing was compliments from our opposition (who weren't always complimentary) whenever Luke Luey, Shane Kennedy or Aaron Van Der Wyst fired in a throw from the boundary.

Some of the funnier moments of the season (- well funny for some, frustrating for others) include 2 overs at Hawthorndene that Glenn Bailey bowled. After bowling exceptionally well and having a couple of early chances put down Glenn managed to get a batsman willing to "take him on" and attempt to hit over the top. As Captain I told Glenn that I would put my best fielder on the fence for him. Predictably the batsman skied a catch right down that fielders throat only to be dropped. Next over with the same plan, the same thing happens only this time the fielder takes a belter of a catch, one handed at full stretch, but as the ball crossed the line it was judged a "6". The very next ball the batsman, sensing his luck, skied another one right down the throat of the same fielder - who again dropped a sitter. As Captain I really didn't know what to say to Glenn at this stage, and I certainly couldn't say anything to the fielder seeing that I was the fielder...

Andrew Gilkes also provided a couple of magic moments in the field with a catch that went straight through his hands, bounced off his knee and was caught very casually in his left hand. "Never in doubt", he stated. Dave Wright was looking for a solution to getting out a well set batsman so, after exhausting all options, he put it to the team, "how do we get this guy out?", to which Gilkesy replied "give me the ball". Gilkesy not only got him out, but went on to take 4/35.

It would be hard to finish the Captain’s Report without mentioning the Captain’s Trophy winner Tom (Mandy) Moore. There's not a game that goes by that Tom doesn't get the boys going. If it's not a terrible joke or his "Pornstar" fashion sense, he inspires us all with his enthusiasm in the field. Tom has always showed promise as a batsman, but this year he has been used on occasions with the ball, even to the point that he opened the bowling for our last game vs South Rd. This year Tom has been a very important ingredient in setting the tone amongst our players. He is very good at getting the boy's in a jovial mood and as such playing the game in a more relaxed, "social" mindset which directly reflects on the spirit that the Section 2 team has played the game this year and in my opinion is a direct reflection on the success that we are beginning to have in this grade.

C GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

We came into this season with high expectations after winning the Section 6 Premiership last season but were on the back foot from Game 1 as, unbeknown to us, we played the top 2 teams first.

In the first game, against North Haven, we chased 320 with only 9 batters and fell 160 runs short! Mark Withers had a good game taking 4 wickets and scoring 59 runs and Wayne (the Hoff) Hasel also took 3 wickets.

The next game was much the same with the Plympton Footballers scoring 248 while we could only manage 183, with Scott (Gringo) Brodie scoring 84. The mighty Ryan (Rhino) Rutledge picked up a 5 for and Ashley (Happy) Bryant took 3.

After losing the first 2 games we knew we had to step up a gear if we were to make the final 4, as the previous season we only lost 2 games to scrape into 3rd spot!

Round 3 against South Road we scored 4/403 which would prove to be a little greedy – we bowled them out for 139 in 40 overs but only had them 9/178 in the remaining 20 overs – 10 overs at them the week before might have made all the difference in getting an outright. The highlights were Steve (Davo) Davenport’s 165, Scott (Gringo) Brodie’s 121 (they put on 260 for the 2nd wicket) and Mark Withers’ quick fire 67. Sam (the Bull) Durham finished with match figures of 7/54, with Ryan (Rhino) Rutledge chipping in with 5/39.

Round 4 against Southern seemed to be a carbon copy of the previous game – we scored 8/290 and bowled them out for 102 and 9/156 – again 1 wicket short. Mark Withers top scored again with a brutal 94, while Steve (Davo) Davenport and myself chipped in with 60 each. Ashley (Happy) Bryant and Justin (JC) Calderbank both finished with 7 for the game.

Round 5 against the Cavaliers was a one dayer which came down to the wire – we got 193 and they managed 183. Brett Chilton lead the scoring with a solid 48 and Steve (Davo) Davenport got 34, but my outstanding memory was Wayne (the Hoff) Hasel being run out without facing a ball, after informing us for the previous 15 minutes of how he was ‘gonna take them apart’. We bowled and fielded really well to contain them to 183 – a really good team win.

We had another good win against Kenilworth in Round 6. The game was reduced to 40 overs a side - they scored 205 and we got them 1 down. I (Nat Elliott) scored 113 and Adrian (Cass) Cassidy got 62 (I’m still not quite sure how he came in in front of Davo!). Brett Chilton and Wayne (the Hoff) Hasel got 3 wickets each with Luke (Scrivo) Scrivens chipping in with 2.

We lost round 7 against St George. The game was reduced to 33 overs and they set us 167 but we were bowled out for 146 – with what I thought was our strongest batting lineup. Ashley (Happy) Bryant and Mark Withers got 3 wickets each and Wayne (the Hoff) Hasel got 2. I (Nat Elliott) got 38 and Brett (the Claw) Evitts made a good 33 in a disappointing batting display.

Round 8 against the ICC Sharks was another loss. We made 228 and they chased them down with 4 overs to spare. I (Nat Elliott) got 102 and Steve (Davo) Davenport 39. Brad (Junior) Davenport was the pick of the bowlers with 4/44.

Round 9 was the highlight for me. We had to win it to have a sniff at a finals chance. Sheidow Park batted on a 40 degree’er and made 6/281 – they put on 90 in the last 10. We batted solidly with 9 of our batsmen getting into double figures and won it with 1 ball to spare! The memorable moments were Leith Barker and Ashley (Happy) Bryant’s 6’s when we all thought we were finished!

We came into the last round against 2nd to bottom Western Youth needing an outright – so winning the toss was crucial – I lost it (I can’t remember winning the toss all year!). So we batted first and agreed that we’d give ourselves 40 overs to set them a total – we declared after 38 overs with 276 on the board. Great batting from Brad (Junior) Davenport (78 not out), Brett Chilton (57) and Mark Withers (38). We then had 20 overs at them and they finished 1/24! The next week they showed no interest in getting to our score, despite my assurances that we’d declare 0/0 to give them a chance at an outright. For a team that didn’t win a game all season and had nothing to lose, it was very disappointing that they didn’t try and play some cricket – having 20 wickets to score 280 on a small ground should have been a chance even for them.

Well it was our first season in Section 5 and we did really well. With a bit more luck we could easily have finished in the top 4 and had a chance at the finals. Well done boys, it was a fun year and after all that’s why we play!!

This year the Batting Trophy was won by myself (Nat Elliott), with Wayne (the Hoff) Hasel snatching the hotly contested Bowling Trophy in the last game and Luke Scrivens taking out the Fielding Trophy.

I’ve given the Captain’s Trophy this year to Scott (Gringo) Brodie even though he only played 2 games due to a serious injury. In those 2 games he scored 205 runs at an average of 102.5. He then came out to all the other games, scored and filled out the team sheet as well as providing great support and encouragement to the rest of the team. Thanks for all your help Gringo and well done for averaging more than the Don in your last season as single man!!

D GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

This was my first year as captain at Coromandel Ramblers Cricket Club and I couldn’t have wished for a better debut year. The D Grade did exceptionally well all season and finished 2nd on the ladder after the completion of the minor round. Our squad for season 2006/07 consisted of the following 18 players:

Matt Anderson, Tyler Harman, Josh Haussen, Tate Murray, Keith Harman, David Miller, Simon Billett, Joel Harman, Pat Anderson, Sam Davenport, David Agnew, Clae Murray, Chris Raymond, Greg Murray, Matt Jeans, James Lescke, Glenn Dundovic and Joel Milverton.

Round 1 – Coromandel IV defeated Coromandel Ramblers IV after a Tribunal Decision. (Ramblers won the game but had match points deducted due to an un-cleared player).

Coromandel IV 9/99. Coromandel were put under the pump early by some tight bowling from the opening bowlers Clae Murray (1/17) and Sam Davenport (3/10). Although Coromandel’s middle order held their wickets and looked like posting a decent score David Agnew (3/15) and Pat Anderson (2/12) worked hard with the ball and provided good support to the openers by picking up a couple of wickets in quick succession.

Coromandel Ramblers IV 143. The Ramblers had a shaky start, losing a few cheap wickets but Matt Anderson (37) with good support from Tate Murray (48*) put together a very handy 50 run partnership and got us back on track. Joel Harman came in late in the innings and smashed a quick 25 to help us over the line.

Round 2 - Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated Kenilworth III by forfeit.

Round 3 - Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated Sheidow Park V outright.

Sheidow Park V 129. Once again Sam Davenport (4/37) came out firing and didn’t take long to pick up his first scalp. Chris Raymond on debut was given the ball with no one quite sure what he was capable of. He went on to impress the skipper with figures of 2/18, almost claiming a hat-trick in his last over of the day.

Coromandel Ramblers IV 181. Tyler Harman returned to the Ramblers, starting off his run frenzy with 36. Keith Harman in his first year of playing cricket decided to show us what he’s capable of with a solid knock of 55*.

Sheidow Park V 85. I was approached by Sheidow’s captain who insisted we go home early because there was no way we could pick up ten wickets in 1 1/2 hours. We chose to play on and good accurate bowling by Sam Davenport (3/26) and David Miller (3/15) proved him wrong!

Coromandel Ramblers IV 0/43. Tyler Harman with 40* off 14 deliveries helped the Ramblers win outright in an exciting and well-fought finish.

Round 4 - Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated Mitchell Park III outright

Coromandel Ramblers IV 231. Tyler Harman soaked up the sun for most the afternoon out at the crease hitting his way to 74. A middle order collapse put pressure on the lower order. David Agnew (36*) and Chris Raymond (41) put on a 70 run partnership, helping us post a descent total and proving themselves capable of being labelled as all-rounders.

Mitchell Park III 8/82 (all out). Early wickets from Sam Davenport (2/11) and Clae Murray (3/34) put instant pressure on an undermanned Mitchell Park side. David Agnew and Chris Raymond also picked up 1 wicket apiece.

Mitchell Park III 7/52 (all out) Made to follow-on after struggling to last the first hour on the second Saturday, gave us the chance to win outright for consecutive games. Good fielding made it difficult for the batsman to score runs. David Agnew (2/19) and Joel Harman (4/5) were the best of the bowlers.

Round 5 - Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated Adelaide Cavaliers II by forfeit

Round 6 - Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated South Park II on 1st innings

South Park II 131. We struggled to get wickets with the South Park openers finding the boundary a bit too easily on what looked to be a very quick outfield. A bowling change though brought about a collapse with Tyler Harman (3/18) supported well by father Keith Harman (3/9).

Coromandel Ramblers IV 4/144. A couple of controversial LBW decisions didn’t help us get off to a good start. Then Tate Murray demoralised the opposition bowlers, smashing his way to 62 and was well supported by Sam Davenport (18). David Agnew (26*) also contributed and we proved that our team were going to be finals contenders.

Round 7 - Keswick IV defeated Coromandel Ramblers IV on 1st innings

Coromandel Ramblers IV 115. Not a good day with the bat but thankfully Simon Billett was able to rescue us hitting his way to a healthy 59. His innings included a few big sixes that lost 2 balls, which we found later on that day floating downstream.

Keswick IV 9/171 dec. We knew that Keswick were a good team and worked hard to keep them from scoring many runs. We had them at 6/33 with Tyler Harman (3/52) claiming a hat-trick. Unfortunately a few players put too much butter on their toast and important catches were put down. We know we had the chance to win this game and were disappointed with the result. David Agnew (4/41) also bowled magnificently.

Coromandel Ramblers IV 3/98. Tyler Harman backed up his good performance with the ball hitting an unbeaten 54. This killed any hope for Keswick of an outright.

Round 8 - Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated North Haven V on 1st innings

Coromandel Ramblers IV 6/129. Rain stopped play on the first day with us 4/22. The following week Matt Anderson (48*) and David Miller (17), put on a 51 run partnership and helped our scorebook to look a lot more healthy. Keith Harman also made 29*, bumping our total up towards something we could protect. Highlight of the afternoon was Joel Harman hitting a 6 that almost cleared the Port River.

North Haven V 62. Considering we got heckled about our cautious batting after a dreadful start and being told our total wasn’t going to be good enough, it felt good to get North Haven out for a cheap score. Sam Davenport (7/32) and David Agnew (2/30) really kept the batsman quiet and caused a few faces to go red.

Round 9 - Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated ICC Sharks IV on 1st innings

Coromandel Ramblers IV 213. A good all-round team effort with the bat helped us to score a decent total. Joel Harman top scored with 54* and was well supported by David Agnew (38), Tate Murray (23), Josh Haussen (20) and Keith Harman (20). This set up what was one of the most exciting games this season.

ICC Sharks IV 202. Who could have asked for a better start with Sam Davenport picking up a wicket on the very first ball of the day. Joel Harman proved to be a very handy bowler, working hard to get impressive figures of 5/37. Simon Billett bowled a perfect line and length finishing with 4/34.

Round 10 - Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated Morphettville Park IV on 1st innings

Coromandel Ramblers IV 2/255. Half the team spent the day in the shade enjoying the entertainment provided by Tyler Harman (131) and Matt Anderson (65), who together put on a 199 opening run stand. Josh Haussen (32*) proved that he is a talented batsman with a great display of shots played.

Morphettville Park IV 68. We went home early due to an awesome spell by the opening bowlers Sam Davenport (2/15) and David Agnew (4/23). Wickets were also shared amongst Keith Harman, David Miller and Pat Anderson with a wicket each.

Round 11 - Coromandel Ramblers IV defeated Woodcroft II by forfeit

Batting Trophy: Tyler Harman opened the batting and was a stand-out batsman this year. He is strong on both sides of the wicket and made plenty of handy scores. A few of his dominant scores included 131, 74, 54*, 40*, 36 and 31. His average for the season was 44.00 and he finished the year on an impressive 396 runs.

Bowling Trophy: Sam Davenport took out the bowling trophy this year with 28 wickets. He managed to pick up wickets on occasions when we desperately needed to break partnerships. Some of his best figures included: 3/10, 3/16, 3/26, 4/37 and a career best 7/32. Sam is a consistent bowler and always keeps the batsman thinking. He narrowly missed out on the Association Bowling Trophy with the eventual winner breaking the tie by taking wickets in the last game while Sam had a forfeit.

Captain’s Trophy: Keith Harman played his first ever game/season of competitive cricket this year and it didn’t take him long to get his first descent knock. He scored 55* and cemented his spot in the squad. Keith averaged 20 runs a game and made 137 runs this season. He showed plenty of potential as a batsman to come also scoring 29*, 25* and 20. Keith’s positive attitude was well respected by not only our team but also the opposition. He trained hard every week and got wickets every time I chucked him the ball during a game. Keith always provided a cold esky with ice at each game and proved to be very handy at the club Quiz Night!

Fielding Trophy: David Miller had a sensational year in the field rarely letting anything get past him. He got 3 run outs, took a few absolute classic catches and always kept the vibe positive in the field.

E GRADE CAPTAIN’S REPORT

The E Grade had a great season winning 6 games (3 outright) and losing 2 games. The other 3 games were forfeited. We had a good fun season with players coming out of retirement and from other grades to give us a hand. Everyone had the opportunity to have a go and was given the chance to bat or bowl.

Round 1 Coromandel Ramblers V defeated Coromandel V by forfeit Win by Forfeit

Round 2 ICC Sharks V defeated Coromandel Ramblers V by forfeit Lost by Forfeit

Round 3 Coromandel Ramblers V 3/257 defeated South Road IV 70 & 90 Win Outright Geoff Jenner was best with the ball with great figures of 4/0 and he took himself off so we could all have a go. Fabulous Phil Megson made 101 not out and Robin Gross 102 not out for a great partnership of 181. Phil then took 4/14.

Round 4 Warradale III defeated Coromandel Ramblers V by forfeit Lost by Forfeit

Round 5 Coromandel Ramblers V 166 defeated Sheidow Park 156 Win This game was mainly the team from the D Grade. Best with the ball was Simon Billet who took 4/21 and was best with the bat also with 51. Tom Muir made his best score of 39 - if you need the run by run details just see Tom!

Round 6 Keswick 4/268 defeated Coromandel Ramblers V 192 Loss Due to the hot weather a one-day game was played. We only took 4 wickets with Forbes Thompson taking 2/39 and a run-out as well. We had a few starts but fell short in the end. Sam Durham (39) and Richard Schirmer (26) top scored.

Round 7 Keswick 7/201 defeated Coromandel Ramblers V 149 Loss We lost to Keswick again. I hate Keswick!!

Round 8 Coromandel Ramblers V 8/163 defeated St George III 8/154 Win We tried to play on a wet day and had a few overs in the rain with only 10 players for the game. At the start we only had 8, but after a few phone calls Mike and Andy Jenner raced to the ground. Mike Jenner (4/40) was the best with the ball. We were in a bit of trouble at 6/110 with only 2 wickets in hand. A winning partnership of 52 from Geoff Jenner and Forbes Thompson got us over the line.

Round 9 Coromandel Ramblers V 205 defeated South Road IV 32 & 80 Win Outright We only made 205 on a hot day with Phil Megson being taken off the ground in a Tony Benson ambulance for the day. Some good fielding and great bowling by Scott Sharland (5/21) and Michael Breton (3/6) doing the damage. In the second innings we had South Road all out for 80 with Michael Breton again doing the damage with 4/25.

Round 10 Coromandel Ramblers V 2/166 defeated North Haven 9/162 Win This was another one-day game due to the hot weather, with the best of the bowlers being Scott Sharland (5/20) and Andy Jenner (2/12). The best with the bat were Scott Sharland (77 not out) and Richard Schirmer (52 - his first 50 for the club). We had a bit off luck with North Haven dropping 11 catches!

Round 11 Coromandel Ramblers V 3/121 defeated Southern III 42 & 25 Win Outright Things looked great getting Southern out for only 42 off 21 overs with Scott Sharland doing the damage with 5/14. We made 121 off only 15 overs. We told Tom Muir when he was batting that we were only going to bat for 2 more overs, he did the team thing and asked how many runs he had. When he came of the field we said well done Tom 49 not out. He suggested that we should keep batting for a few more overs. Well done Tom you only had 41 not out (Tom’s best ever with the bat). In Southern’s second innings they made 25 with Michael Breton getting 5/5, Scott Sharland got dragged after 2 overs with 1/0, only to give some others a go. A great victory in just one day.

Thanks to all players for the good fun season with special thanks to Geoff Jenner who captained the team for the first part of the year and also helped out chasing players. David (Bubbles) Neil gave his normal 110% looking after the equipment and the score book. Bubbles hates batting because we might mess up the score book!

The Bowling Trophy went to Scott Sharland with 25 wickets, some great bowling. Also great bowling efforts by Michael Breton (14 wickets) and Geoff Jenner (11 wickets).

The Batting Trophy went to Richard Schirmer with 185. Some more great batting efforts were from Scott Sharland (167), Phil Megson (135), and Tom Muir (127).

The Fielding Trophy went to Richard Schirmer, an excellent effort as he was the wicketkeeper for 4 games.

The Captain’s Trophy went to David Neil who looked after the scorebook and equipment, organised teams and did a million other things in the season, a great team player.

Thanks once again for the good season

Declaration compiled by Peter Hough, Meredith Jenner and David Neil. Edited by Meredith Jenner. March 2007. END OF SEASON PRESENTATION DINNER

The End of Season Presentation Dinner for 2006/07 was held at the Blackwood Football Club on Wednesday, 4th April 2007.

Premiership medals were presented to the victorious members of the E Grade and the annual trophies and awards were presented to this year’s winners.

Thanks to Jenny, Sandy and Annie for the delicious meal and to Liz, who has staffed the bar for us all season, both on Saturdays after the game and for social events.

Special thanks to Wayne (the Hoff) Hasel for hosting the event on the night. BUBBLES’ FUNNIES

Tony Benson Adrian Howard Benno coaches the Ramblers, Howie’s the Chairman of Selectors, He rules with an iron fist. He picks all the teams with great care. And he always drinks Diet Pepsi, And he always picks a sub-fielder, So he only ends up half pissed. ‘Cause he remembers that he won’t be there.

Wayne Hasel Robin Gross Hoff delivers for Coca Cola, Robin drives a big tanker, And his deliveries are full and rich. Which is usually full of wine. So how come when he delivers a cricket ball, And he races halfway across Australia, It lands half-way down the pitch? To try to get to the game on time.

David Neil Paul Durham Bubbles bowls a few spinners, Dougie’s an aggressive cricketer, Using his talented mitt. Especially when he gets given out LB. But everybody in the club, He grabs the bat and beats the crap, Knows he just bowls a heap of shit! Out of the nearest tree.

Glen Rosie Matthew Smith Glen’s our President and IT man, Smithy’s recently returned from New York, His website looks really great. A city of culture and art. And he can now bowl a spell of three overs, But he’s left a huge impression there, ‘Cause he’s lost a bit of weight. Twenty million people still live in fear of his fart.

Adrian Cassidy Steve Davenport Some say Cass is a burglar, Davo’s keen to play C Grade, But really he’s just a good bloke. He says he just wants to have fun. As a financial advisor he’s making a fortune, But we all know the real reason Dav, But as a B Grade batsman he’s going broke. You just want to make easy runs.

Mark Withers Geoff Jenner Mark Withers runs Unley Council, Gyprock’s a great swing bowler, Now that’s a lot different from playing cricket. As a wicket taker he’s at the top of the list. So if you park your car in Unley, He bowls quite well when he’s sober, He’ll race out and give you a ticket. But he bowls a lot better when he’s pissed.

Brett Brodie Andrew Jenner Brett Brodie’s not playing cricket this year, Andrew’s always late for practice, He claims the fees are over the top. His excuses are pretty lame I think. Well that could be good for the Ramblers, But he always seems to turn up, ‘Cause that’s 20 less catches we’ll drop. Just in time to have a drink.

Peter Hough Greg Langham Houghie’s a pretty quick bowler, Greg Langham, he’s a fireman, Though some say his action sucks. He wears a big red hat. He tries to claim its legitimate, He’s not in the Fiery’s Calendar this year, But everybody knows he chucks. He’s a little bit too fat.

Peter Gottsche Nick Work Gottsche’s not playing cricket this year, Nick Work is excited on Saturdays, He says he’s getting to old. Taking wickets and making runs. He sits on the mound with a smile on his face, It sure beats working at McGoughie’s, ‘Cause the beers in his esky are cold. Picking the pears and plums.

Bailey Boys Michael Jenner Glenn Bailey works at Gloria Jean’s, Mike enjoys smashing any bowler, Scott’s the Colonel at KFC. Picking his fielder and hitting the shit. They bat and bowl and wicket-keep, But when he doesn’t get a bowl himself, But sledging’s their speciality. There’s an almighty dummy spit.
