The Paw Print Summer/Fall 2019 from the Desk of the President The Paw Print Summer/Fall 2019 From the desk of the President Dear Members, Exciting to see so many of our members’ achievements featured in this issue of the PawPrint Newsletter! Congratulations to all, great job! We have several items to make you aware of: *** This Saturday, September 21, ODTCW will host a table at Celebrate Middlebury Day at the Shepardson Community Center Field from 11:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. We desperately need volunteer(s) to bring their dog(s) to provide an obedience demonstration. The demonstration can be whatever you would like, just something to showcase what a well-trained dog can do. Elise, Ray and I will be manning the table (although we welcome anyone who would like to join us to pitch in). Our pups are simply not ready to be “demo dogs” and therefore we need someone to step up. We have not received the schedule yet for when our demonstration will take place, but we will let you know as soon as we do. Don’t forget, if you are still looking to put in volunteer hours to receive your annual awards at no cost, this is one way you can earn some work hours, either by helping to man the table or providing a demonstration. *** Saturday, October 19, 2019: Two CDSP trials will be held at ODTCW. Rick Ritacco will be our judge and I have just been accepted as a CDSP Representative so I will serve in that capacity for these trials. Premium is also attached. We hope to see many of our members entering these trials! *** Joan Tuthill is the talented lady who has been updating our website for us. She sent me the following information regarding fencing that she is giving away: I have several chain link panels available to the first come - first takes - I think there is enough for 4 kennels - (6 ft * 18 ft) different lengths, but all are 6' high. most gates have 4' doors but some have the narrower gates 2 1/2 ft - I think - not sure never measured them... If you are interested or you know someone that wants them -tell them to give me a call at (860) 365-5163 -- If I don't answer tell them to leave a message and I'll get back to them (same day)... No message / No return call - I am not answering robo calls... First one here with a truck to haul them away gets them. FREE Bring your own helper as there is no one here that can lift or move the panels. The panels are in East Hampton CT at my home. Joan Tuthill 1 We wish you all much continued success as we enter the Fall season and look forward to seeing many of you at our upcoming events. Sharon Morton President, ODTCW Dates to Remember in 2019 Run-thru schedule Saturday, September 28 Sunday, October 20 Saturday, November 16 Celebrate Middlebury Day Saturday, September 21 CDSP Trials Saturday, October 19 2 Club Member Showcase From Mason Cable On August 17 & 18 there was a UKC 2-trials-a-day event at Dave's in Agawam, MA, judge Donna Blews-Pappas. Tally (Rockwood Talented Tally) and Canny (Caprice Never Say Never) were both entered in Utility B. At the first trial, Tally took HIT with a score of 196 1/2. That afternoon, she received her Utility title. Sunday morning, she took High Combined and Sunday afternoon she took HIT and High Combined. Her high score came out of Open B. Meanwhile Canny NQ'd the first 3 trials. (I had tried to give him a crash course on UKC glove exercise, not a great idea -- UKC Utility differs from AKC Utility in 3 out of 5 exercises and the glove exercise is quite difficult.) However, in the last trial he Q'd with the same score as Tally, so there was a runoff. Canny went first and missed his sit for a halt. So then comes Tally. At the halt command, she forged ahead went into a lag position and barked - no sit, so Canny took first in Utility! Canny (Caprice Never Say Never) on June 7 at the Taconic show in Yorktown Heights, NY, trial 2 under Donna Blews-Pappas won the Utility A class with a score of 192 and his title. This in itself was amazing given Canny's extreme fear of all things new, but for some reason all the Utility dogs had had problems, even the best were flunking. Canny was terrible in trial 1 failing most of the exercises. The winner of trial 1 Utility B had a 190 and there were no qualifiers in Utility A. The winner of trial 2 Utility B had a 187. Canny had received his first 2 legs at the same shows the year before and was shown very little during that year due to my poor health and even on the 7th, I didn't feel very well, but I certainly felt triumphant with ribbons and "super dog" in hand! 3 From Carolyn Balavich Minxie qualified twice at the August 25th CDSP Starter Novice trials held at MasterPeace Dog Training in Massachusetts. Since we already had one leg, she earned the title as well that day! Whoo-hoo! Many thanks to Rick Ritacco and Mason Cable for our progress. We continue to take Rick’s class, and this summer we partnered with Mason to share extra ring time for practice. Rick and Mason actually collaborated on our training! That made me feel pretty special and so very grateful. It’s been a lot of fun! 4 From Caitlin Doody We had a busy summer and have done more in the last few months than ever before, so this is not typical! Augustus earned: Rally freestyle elements canine musical freestyle intermediate and advanced titles. MF/X and MF/EX NASCW : Passed ORT for anise and clove WCRL Rally Level 1 title with an Award of Excellence designation Augustus and his freestyle ribbons. 5 From Lucy McNabney Yeager the grey Pumi placed 3rd out of 23 Utility B dogs at the Schenectady Dog Training th Club trial. It was held on August 18 in Amsterdam, NY. That earned him two more OTCH points for a new total of 196. Yeager is owned by John & Lucy McNabney. 6 More from Lucy McNabney Yeager Wins 1st Place in Open B after 16 Months Absence! The AKC rules changed for the Open B class on May 1, 2018, which knocked Yeager out of the Open ring until his owner finally taught him the new command discrimination exercise. His re-entry into the class happened Sept 7 at the Silver City Training Center in Taunton, MA at the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel Trial. He loved being back in the class and won the blue ribbon out of seven showing. Yeager is a Pumi registered as OTCH Greenfarms Wright Stuff, UDX 4, OGM CM and belongs to Lucy McNabney of Harwinton. Yeager is a Pumi registered as OTCH Greenfarms Wright Stuff, UDX 4, OGM CM and belongs to Lucy McNabney of Harwinton 7 Also from Lucy McNabney We have a new high jump with a 4” bottom board to replace the old broken one. Here it is under construction with John McNabney checking to get it just right. 8 From Dawn Shewchuk Gladys finished her CD title with a bumper leg and placement on July 3rd and 4th at the Holyoke Kennel Club shows at the Big E fairgrounds. She also finished her Rally Novice title with a stunning perfect score of 100 and a first place on time. (We scratched out of the July 4 Rally show for family commitment.) Gladys will move on to Rally Intermediate and continue CDSP, but no big jumps since she just turned 10 on August 8! Gladys is now HR Sunfire Stillwater Pond MH CD RN WCX CCA ND CD-C 9 More from Dawn Gladys and DeeDee finished their dock diving titles at the Horses and Hounds Dock Dogs event in Granby CT on June 13 and 14. Gladys earned enough legs to become a Novice Dockdog and DeeDee earned enough legs to become a Junior Dockdog. 10 And from Dawn DeeDee earned her Working Certificate Excellent at the NSDTR test in Torrington CT on June 8. The Working Certificate Excellent is a Golden Retriever Club of America (GRCA) title demonstrating working ability. The test required triple marked retrieve on land, double in water, and honoring for another working dog. DeeDee is now Sunfire's Rockaway Beach Tweedle DeeDee Ramone JH CD RN WCX CCA CGC JD CD-C 11 From Frank McKane Autumn's Naco Sunka Luta owned by Frank McKane broke his femur on 4th of July weekend. He was 11 weeks old. Looks like he has fully recovered and is ready for training. 12 More from Frank St. Jude's Autumn Field Poppy and Autumn's Sunka Luta Sioux both added Master Hunter ribbons to their collections at the Colonial Field Trial Club test in early August. Both are owned by Frank McKane 13 Frank also shared: HEADING TO THE NATIONAL! Three club member dogs qualified for the 2019 Master National Retriever Trials being held in South Carolina next month. • On Your Mark
ON YOUR MARK WHAT IS FLYBALL Flyball racing is a fast and exciting sport, not only for the spectators and handlers, but for the dogs as well. There are four dogs on a team with an alternate or two. As teams line up, excitement builds. With each dog eager to compete, sometimes it's all the handler can do to hold their dogs. A judge signals the start of the race between the two competing teams. The first dog from each team is released. Each handler is hoping the green light will go on before their dog hits the start and finish line. The first dog is normally released with the first or second caution light, often more than 50 feet from the start line. Racing side by side, each dog races down its lane, flying over a set of four jumps set ten feet apart. At the far end of each lane is a flyball box. Each dog must step on a flyball box pedal releasing a mechanism flipping a tennis ball from the cup. Like Olympic swimmers, dogs bank off the box, hopefully with the ball, if not, the dog must retrieve the ball, and than return over all four jumps with the ball. As each dog makes the turn another dog is waiting eagerly to be released. Dogs are often released more than 50 feet from the start/finish line in an effort to reach top speed as they pass the returning dog at the start/finish line. The lead changes several times as dogs and handlers alike make mistakes.
